Mark Sanchez Benched, as the Jets Will Start Greg McElroy, and Not Tim Tebow, Next Week
Too little, too late when it comes to the Jets benching of Mark Sanchez. New York was eliminated last night when Mark Sanchez turned the ball over five times, including twice in the final two minutes. Chris Mortensen has reported that Greg McElroy will start on Sunday. McElroy was inactive against Tennessee while Tim Tebow served as the backup, but will jump around him again and start the meaningless game against San Diego.
As my good buddy Chase Stuart noted, “Mark Sanchez has not, and I guess will not, start a meaningless game for the Jets. Even though he’s often played like it was.” Amazing to think about that, but last year the Jets had playoff hopes in week 17 until Mark Sanchez extinguished them with poor play, just like yesterday.
Now, we can start the “what do the Jets do with Sanchez” discussion. My thought — he’s getting paid, and backups cost money too, so enjoy taking notes and be prepared in case of injury. New York must address the position though, and to just go with “we are paying him 8.5 million” seems like awful reasoning. Seattle is in contention this year with a backup making at least as much, because they went with a better quarterback.

With the way they’ve handled the 3 guys they currently have, what free agent would even want to go to the Jets now?
December 18th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
But … butt … ah, never mind.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Jets with their 3rd round pick select Danny O’Brian from Wisconsin as Rex nods knowingly at Pete Carroll.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Well a new GM, OC, and QB’s coach will most certainly be on the way. Rex most likely gone too
December 18th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
I’m pointing and laughing at the Jets so, so much right now.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
Little light on your Tebow analysis. Tebow.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Should have happened sooner…
December 18th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
That picture of Sanchez wanting to cry is priceless
December 18th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
What do you think Tebow is listening to in that pic?
December 18th, 2012 at 3:44 PM
Tebow gone too? Career over or does someone take a shot?
December 18th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
I think Rex comes back for at least a year, but Tannebaum and Sparano are gone.
Sanchez has been horrible, but he’s working with the likes of Kerley, Schilins, and Cumberland. Not making excuses, but it’s not like he’s wasting the talent around him.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Also, Bama QBs > USC QBs
/ Trivia: No USC QB has ever played in a Super Bowl
December 18th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Still five more years until he can run for Senate. He’s gotta hang on a little longer.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
What does this mean for his Pepsi Max endorsement deal? And all his modeling photoshoots? Is he the next Citizen Echo Drive spokesman?
December 18th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
If only the Jets had drafted more offensive players these past four years. Oh, what could have been!
December 18th, 2012 at 3:47 PM

You know how many dumb as shit evangelical Christians die in Florida in the next 5 years?
December 18th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
He’ll be on College Gameday full time within 5 years. Running a mega-church within 10 and in the Senate within 20.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
Pat Haden didn’t?
December 18th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Pepsi Max is shit anyways.

December 18th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
True. But, USC hall of famers > any other school’s hall of famers
‘Bama’s right there with Stanford on the best qbs list
December 18th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Sanchez could always become the face of Nathan’s.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Fuck all these posers. I’m on Team real coke. Caffeine and everything.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Lost his job to Ferragamo the year they made it.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
Tebow can be effective, you just have to change your whole offense around to fit him and most teams aren’t willing to do that. Kudos to Shanny for doing it in Wash. NFL GM’s are so dumb and copycat, that they won’t do much of anything new until someone ballsy enough to try it succeeds first.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
Its a good thing they didn’t get Peyton Manning, since they didn’t need him.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
Tebow gone too? Career over or does someone take a shot?
Jags.
Might as well. It’s not as though they’re going to be good anytime soon.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
think JaMarcus Russell would have performed equally?
December 18th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
lol.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Rex really dislikes Tim Tebow.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Speaking of Ferragamo, just finished first season of 24. The would-be president’s son has annoying ass gap-tooth. FIX THAT SHIT!
December 18th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
FOX would be wise to hire him. They need another face to go with Erin Andrews.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
In Chappelle Show skit of Price playing basketball, when Charlie Murphy offends Prince saying “We can call it the shirts vs the blouses.” Prince then looks about ready to cry.
That’s the face Sanchez is making in that photo.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
So is Tebow switching positions just not an option anymore? If he faces a dead end at QB, is there no market for him as a TE, or FB? Say he’s waived- he would at least fetch the veteran’s minimum at one of those positions, right? Somebody get a GM on the phone and get back to me.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
Purdue is sneaky too really good too with Griese, Brees
December 18th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
I could totally see him doing some televangelist thing on TV on Sunday mornings after Joel Osteen.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
Rex really dislikes Tim Tebow.
He dislikes the very idea of a Tim Tebow in general and can’t believe he has to deal with this bullshit.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
And my boy Gary Danielson!
December 18th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
He probably loves the guy, he just sucks at quarterback.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Joel Osteen makes me nervous. He has a permanent smile on his face. Like a serial killer.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Rex really dislikes Tim Tebow.

Rex=Gary Patterson?

Reason 1A I’m rooting for the Redskins. Devising a scheme based around your players’ strengths?!? Unheard of, according to King Asshole Brad Childress.
December 18th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
The only thing I dislike about Danielson is how he says “ondefeated”
December 18th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
I’m sure he much prefers sticking with Sanchez and it costing him his job. Brilliant move fatboy. Rex, not you KC.

December 18th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Matt Leinart held a clipboard in Super Bowl 43, that count?
December 18th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
So let’s say they bench Sanchez and trade Tebow (they bench Sanchez and trade Tebow). Do they trade up to grab Geno Smith or Matt Barkley? Considering it’d be a big leap and there’s no guarantees with them like there was with Luck last year, that’d be doubling down big time.
So Alex Smith? Matt Flynn? Brady Quinn??
December 18th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Not sure they’ll have to trade up.
December 18th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
Ken Whisenhunt fully supports this line of thinking.
December 18th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
USC does have arguably the greatest play in Super Bowl history. Marcus Allen, running into the night
December 18th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
I would bet lots of money that the Cardinals would draft Geno if he’s still around at 7 (where the Cards will end up picking), not so sure about Barkley though. Already got burned by one USC QB named Matt.
December 18th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Jimmy Clausen
December 18th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Barkley cannot be happy with these USC suckholes.
“You bitches are spending my damn money!”
December 18th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
I think the Jets are best off looking at qbs starting in the third round. They have holes to fill, and developing a qb rather than throwing a first rounder into the fire is the way to go IMO.
More importantly, they need superior offensive coaching, or the next qb will be undermined like Sanchez has been

she lives down the street. i am going to find out.
December 18th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
Not well I’d imagine. Mama McCarron is world class
December 18th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Wait, didn’t Brodie Croyle start for the Chiefs at some point?
December 18th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
Amazingly, he is 0-10 as a starter.

December 18th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
wow. have any other qb’s ever started double digit games and not won a single one?
December 18th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Who was the last Bama QB to win a game he started? Richard Todd?
Holy shit, Jeff Rutledge back in ’87
Wait, didn’t Brodie Croyle start for the Chiefs at some point?
Amazingly, he is 0-10 as a starter.
Isn’t 1987 also the last time a QB drafted by the Chiefs started a game that the team won? It’s around the same time
December 18th, 2012 at 4:53 PM
So the Jags hire Josh McDaniels as HC and bring in Tebow, right? It makes too much backward-ass-Florida sense not to do it.
Also, I will never get tired of watching the Jets and Rex fail miserably.
December 18th, 2012 at 4:53 PM
Curtis Painter needs to lose 2 more starts, currently 0-8.
December 18th, 2012 at 4:54 PM
John Beck only got to 0-7, sadly I think we can close the book on him
December 18th, 2012 at 8:52 PM
Dan Orlovsky started 0-9. his career record is an awesome 2-11. He has also played in an additional 3 games where the team he played for lost.
