Jets at Titans: Monday Night Football
Pittsburgh losing at Dallas Sunday was enormous for the New York Jets’ infinitesimally small playoff chances. Here’s how the woeful Jets – 4-7 after that embarrassing Thanksgiving night loss to the Patriots, aka the BUTTFUMBLE game – can sneak into the playoffs:
1) Win the rest of their games. Beat Tennessee tonight on the road (without three starters). Beat San Diego at home on December 23rd. Beat the Bills in Buffalo on Dec. 30th. How likely is this? I’d say tonight’s game is the most difficult. The Chargers’ win at Pittsburgh was a fluke; San Diego has lost five of six. They looked like a bunch of quitters Sunday against Carolina in a 31-7 drubbing. The Bills are in an equally sad tailspin, having lost three of four, including a home defeat to St. Louis. New York beat Buffalo in the season opener, 48-28.
2) Cincinnati (8-6) at Pittsburgh (7-7) WINNER next week must lose the following week. In the final week of the season, Cincinnati hosts Baltimore and Pittsburgh (lost four of five) hosts Cleveland. Confusing?
IF Cincinnati beats Pittsburgh to improve to 9-6, but loses to Baltimore to fall to 9-7, the Jets would be 9-7 and advance to the playoffs on the tiebreaker.
IF Pittsburgh beats Cincinnati to improve to 8-7, then loses to Cleveland to fall to 8-8, the Jets at 9-7 would get in.
The Steelers would have a tiebreaker over the Jets (27-10 week two win); the Bengals would not. As a Jets fan, I’ll be wearing an Icky Woods jersey Sunday and rooting for the Bengals. Why? I think Pittsburgh would beat Cleveland at home in its season finale, and I’m not sure Cincinnati beats Baltimore.
All that being said … I think the Titans have an advantage tonight, and win, 23-17. If Mark Sanchez plays as poorly as Joe Flacco or Matt Stafford did Sunday, Tuesday will be a long, long day for Jets fans. [Scenarios H/T: Manish Mehta]

I think NYJ loses their last 3 games, PIT beats CIN next week and then loses to CLE. CIN loses last 2 games as well. MIA beats BUF and a Festivus Miracle against NE in Foxborough mind you, and the Phins get the last WC spot at 8-8.
Then promptly get beatdown in the WC Weekend.

If the Jets lose tonight we you post about them daily?
December 17th, 2012 at 8:42 PM
Jason! You here for the hang, or just doing a touch-n-go?
It was painful to watch. Answered any final questions regarding Norval and A.J., right? Regardless of tonight, I would expect the Jets to handle the Chargers again, like last season.

When British people say the name “Will” it sort of sounds like, “we you”. So nice work, although you’re still missing a “you”.
December 17th, 2012 at 9:06 PM
Detroit made it tight at the end but Syracuse hangs on and Boheim gets win 900
December 17th, 2012 at 9:19 PM
Forgot about the awesomeness of that GQ photo and the idea of someone taking a chance and doing that with Flacco.
December 17th, 2012 at 9:23 PM
1st Jets drive the OL was great … that drive just now, less so.
I think the Titans defense has 4 or 5 penalties already.
December 17th, 2012 at 9:28 PM
I guess Chris Johnson still has it? 94 yards, basically untouched.
December 17th, 2012 at 9:33 PM
I wasn’t watching. Video?
December 17th, 2012 at 9:35 PM
oh, so it’s going to be like that? Heavy dose of Tebow?
Gruden was basically laughing at the Jets.
December 17th, 2012 at 9:51 PM
If the Jets lose tonight we you post about them daily?
Come on, McIntyre hasn’t done daily Jets post in ages. Keep up with the times in your criticism of this site.
/No more Gangnam, please.
Sanchez has that look in his face of really wanting to be a back-up QB in Cleveland, San Diego, Kansas City, Jax, or Tenn. Just the whole, “let me get through this season and someone will sign me to hold a clipboard for a lot of money and I can plow through some young gals that don’t know any better.”
December 17th, 2012 at 9:52 PM
he has it on that one play. other than that he’s terrible. like a crappy version of Boom-or-Bust-Barry.
I don’t think you can win with Johnson as a back. And I doubt TN is giving him $9M guaranteed. He’ll be a UFA in two months.
December 17th, 2012 at 9:53 PM
Just make sure it’s behind a vet with no injury history. God forbid he ends up like Flynn/Cassell and ends up starting for some poor fan base. I can see him now breaking Lisk’s heart next year.
December 17th, 2012 at 9:58 PM
Mark Sanchez might be worse than Tebow.
27 yards with 3 yard per attempt with a minute to go before halftime. Good god.
December 17th, 2012 at 9:59 PM
Chris Johnson has not been too bad this year. 4.7 YPA. Not amazing but not as bad as the last couple seasons.
December 17th, 2012 at 10:01 PM
Is there any reason NOT to have McElroy start the 2nd half?
December 17th, 2012 at 10:02 PM
Yeah I think that is misleading though. I cant imagine he doesnt lead the league in 0/negative yard runs. I don’t think a simple average tells the whole story, or provides the information most relevant to ball control and scoring.

December 17th, 2012 at 10:14 PM
At least he’s got longevity over the greatest coach in Big East history
/convinces self the end of the Big East is good because Calhoun’s status can never be threatened
December 17th, 2012 at 10:19 PM
His status as a jerkoff and running a dirty program? Sure
December 17th, 2012 at 10:20 PM
Bahahahahaha sanchez
December 17th, 2012 at 10:21 PM
Wow thats ugly. Tebow, Tebow, Tebow.
December 17th, 2012 at 10:26 PM
Go titans! Bury the jets
December 17th, 2012 at 10:29 PM
Hilarious how all Calhoun haters blindly accept the NCAA myth of the dirty program. As for the jerkoff part, he was a no-bullshit, honest, good guy. Sure he went off on the occasional hack media member, but it was always deserved. Boeheim does the same thing, just in an incredibly whiny and unentertaining, rather than abrasive, tone.
/reminisces about three national titles

poor Calhoun
December 17th, 2012 at 10:34 PM
Calhoun was a huge cheat and an even bigger dick.
December 17th, 2012 at 10:36 PM
Funny story. Friends of mine went to the game at ‘Cuse last year and may or may not have been slightly intoxicated. They went to Turning Stone afterwards and were causing the type of ruckus a pack of sloppy dudes are prone to. When asked by security if everything was alright, one guy responded “everything is Bernie Fine”. Considering the timing, this did not go over well with the patrons
December 17th, 2012 at 10:38 PM
Myths. He just doesn’t put up the bullshit facade that other college coaches do
December 17th, 2012 at 10:46 PM
no, really, the JETS SCORED A TD
December 17th, 2012 at 10:48 PM
Well, if a UConn fan says he’s clean…
December 17th, 2012 at 10:48 PM
Sanchez recovering for McFumble. USC all over again
December 17th, 2012 at 10:49 PM
Clean is a huge stretch. No dirtier than any other highly successful coach, I’d assert.
December 17th, 2012 at 10:50 PM
Anyone ever read the Sam Kean stuff “Disappearing Spoon” or “Violinists Thumb”… lots of good reviews, really science-y (obviously I can get behind that)

I’m aghast by the public perceptions of Saint K and especially the biggest snake in college hoops, Roy Williams
December 17th, 2012 at 10:53 PM
Holy crap a real, actual football game has broken out!

I kinda liked the one with Grohl on the drums….
December 17th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
You know, I give Jason a hard time here sometimes about trying to manufacture stories and lack of journalistic standards, but I shit you not, here is an actual headline from ESPN.com
He didn’t lose his job after one game out. Good news, guys!
December 17th, 2012 at 10:58 PM
That’s the one, prophet. I don’t know what instrument he was playing, but it sounded awesome.
December 17th, 2012 at 10:58 PM
But Cousins is undefeated as a starter!?!?
/Kaepernick’d

December 17th, 2012 at 10:59 PM
Come on Jets!!!!!
/Wants playoffs for more of the Status Quo
December 17th, 2012 at 11:02 PM
This should be the thought process of every Pats fan. Or anyone who enjoys Francesa’s continued evisceration of the current Jet regime. It’s one of the best ongoing storylines in media
December 17th, 2012 at 11:02 PM
So after upgrading to the new iOS on my phone, Im pretty sure I’m switching to Android. What a useless update, making everything less user-friendly and forcing you to use the apps the way they want.
I don’t want a giant-sized phone though so who knows what I’ll end up with. Contract up in February.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:04 PM
And I’ve always been an Apple defender (not huge into their stuff, but it always was clean and user-friendly). Now it’s just busy and crowded and slow.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:04 PM
Yeah, I’m not rooting for the Jets. Any time. Ever.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:07 PM
I have no animus towards the Jets. They are fun to beat and laugh at, but I’ve never considered them a threat
December 17th, 2012 at 11:08 PM
Little brother in NY, little brother in the AFC East. Other than that, it must be great to be a Jets fan
December 17th, 2012 at 11:09 PM
They are rats, for one. But either way, I’m still not rooting for them. I don’t root for the Yankees if they make the WS, out of AL East loyalty. Not rooting for the Jets, ever.
If they lose, I don’t gain much pleasure, because it really only matters who wins, but I’m still not rooting for them or anyone on the team.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:12 PM
Absolutely. The more Mark Sanchez in the AFC East the better.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:16 PM
Rex Ryan won’t do an interview with Francesa during the season. The blowhard (referring to Rex) is afraid to get grilled by a true pro
December 17th, 2012 at 11:24 PM
Shut the fuck up
December 17th, 2012 at 11:24 PM
Mark Sanchez, playoff wins baby, playoff wins.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:26 PM
The Jets have the worst skill position personnel I recall seeing on an NFL team
December 17th, 2012 at 11:27 PM
The wide open miss on 3rd down by Locker looks big right now. Tough to blame personnel or make excuses on that one. If he can’t make that throw, it bodes poorly for his future.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:29 PM
Based on that penalty, Mark Sanchez’s head really is up his ass. Explains a lot.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:31 PM
Nice kick by Sanchez.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:31 PM
Come on fourth pick!
December 17th, 2012 at 11:31 PM
Patriots should sit on the 3 seed and hope jets make the playoffs. Patriots might drop 60 on them
December 17th, 2012 at 11:31 PM
Worst case scenario for the Jets is Sanchez playing well at the end of the season.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:32 PM
It doesn’t matter, Soused, he’s coming back.
Financial thing
December 17th, 2012 at 11:33 PM

December 17th, 2012 at 11:33 PM
Tebow wins the game there. Nice work Mark.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
Never mind.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
This is what I mean when CJ isn’t a back you can win with. He can’t get a first down here, Jets get the ball back with plenty of time, in TN territory.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
Possibly the worst throw I’ve ever seen.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
Sad.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:35 PM
There is definitely time for one more pick
December 17th, 2012 at 11:35 PM
And since i wasn’t around all day….fire chan gailey, cut ryan fitzpatrick, cut fred jackson, fire buddy nix, hire a real gm, coach, and get a QB..also, give the ball to Spiller 25 times a game

December 17th, 2012 at 11:40 PM
Sanchez did a terrible job, dropping that after it was in his hands, but what the hell was that, McKnight kicking the ball away.
Just terrible. What happened to the “Jets are only bad because Mangold is out” talk from last year. Thank god those idiots shut up.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:40 PM
Trojans – someone better than fitzpatrick. No arm strength, he is inaccurate when he actually makes the deep attempt, constantly misses wide open receivers, bad pocket awareness. Bills need a tall, strong QB who gives the coach faith that a40 yard pass can be made instead of relying on screen passes on 3rd and 10.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:41 PM
AP-can I interest you in some Alex Smith? Matt Flynn?
December 17th, 2012 at 11:42 PM
Tyler fucking Bray to the rescue.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:43 PM
Man, tomorrow will be fun.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:43 PM
Ill take flynn or cousins
December 17th, 2012 at 11:43 PM
Most hilarious ending sequence to a football game ever?
WWOS, you’re dead right on CJ. Take away that 94 yard TD and he had 28 yards on 20 carries. Yikes.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:43 PM
I want the sanchize to be the jets qb forever
December 17th, 2012 at 11:44 PM
Francesa’s first radio segment will be fantastic tomorrow. More jets mockery
December 17th, 2012 at 11:45 PM
I was laughing so hard and it was so pitiful for an instant I actually felt bad for them.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:45 PM
Francesa: That puhfomance by da Jets was an uttah disgrace
At least they have the Giants to deflect some of it JMac

December 17th, 2012 at 11:47 PM
Don’t lie
As for Cousins, where are all the “how can you draft Cousins when you already have Griffin” cries now?
December 17th, 2012 at 11:47 PM
You sound relieved, best to just tear it off in a series of buffoonish moments than incompetently peel if off over the next two weeks.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:48 PM
Mark Sanchise. Comical.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:51 PM
Turned to NFL Network. The thought of Reilly making a comment that he had been thinking of for 8 hours is too much to bear for me.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:53 PM
Find out if I graduate or get canned tomorrow. See y’all Wednesday.
December 17th, 2012 at 11:57 PM

December 17th, 2012 at 11:58 PM
WWoS, I’m rooting for you to graduate. Excelsior!
