Sunday Night Football: San Francisco 49ers at New England Patriots
A second consecutive primetime showdown at home for New England, as San Francisco comes in to play what has become an extremely important game for both teams. On Monday, it was the Patriots’ destroying the Texans to keep their #1 seed hopes alive. Tonight, the Patriots still need to stay ahead of Denver and within striking distance of Houston. The 49ers, meanwhile, are being chased by Seattle, and a loss sets up a showdown game in Seattle next week for the NFC West. A win gives them the luxury of losing next week and still holding off Seattle.
New England has had a lead of more than a touchdown in the fourth quarter in every game since week 2 against Arizona. San Francisco can expect creative blitz packages to test Colin Kaepernick, though I think the Patriots will also want to give a variety of looks to the young quarterback so he can’t just make plays with his strong arm against clear man coverages. Strength on strength on the other side, where the Patriots continue to roll on offense, but will be challenged by the San Francisco defensive front. Aldon Smith will look to move closer to Michael Strahan in another primetime showcase.

Over/under on how long Costas pontificates about gun control tonight?
December 16th, 2012 at 8:24 PM
He wont. But he should pontificate about the dangers of cars and pools when it comes to children fatalities.
December 16th, 2012 at 8:24 PM
Hopefully he pontificates for a long damn time. This is the perfect time to talk politics. Yes, I’m being serious.
December 16th, 2012 at 8:26 PM
I, for one, respect the political opinions of a hobbit sports nerd.
/double wanker motion
December 16th, 2012 at 8:26 PM
I’m not debating that, but we’re talking Costas here. He’s an insufferable gasbag in the best of times. I don’t want to hear him blathering on here.
December 16th, 2012 at 8:27 PM
And why’s that?
December 16th, 2012 at 8:28 PM
If the aim is to put baseball’s steroid era in historical context, I’m all ears. Anything else from Costas, the channel changes automatically. It’s actually an anti-blowhard program I’ve created. Hit me up if anyone’s interested in purchasing
December 16th, 2012 at 8:29 PM
When I tune in to football, it’s an escape. This entire NBC pregame has seemed to be “Newton, Newton, Newton.” Yes, we are aware of the horrific incident Friday. You don’t need to throw it in our faces every 20 seconds. I just want to watch the game and put it out of mind for a little while.
December 16th, 2012 at 8:30 PM
I doubt if he will. Probably will just say something like, “I said my piece on this a couple weeks ago” and then blather in more general terms about how society needs to be better and shit.
Yes it’s amazing that people respond differently to humans intentionally murdering other humans with weapons that make those murders extremely efficient than they do to cars and pools.

If this happened in England, Prince Phillip would be nattering on about cricket bats or something.
Oh, wait, it did. And he did.
December 16th, 2012 at 8:31 PM
And why’s that?
Because after events like this we all have perspective.
December 16th, 2012 at 8:31 PM

Have a thirty point lead with Kaepernick against Brady and the Jets defense, cautiously optimistic.
Also, good GOD The Hobbit was long.
December 16th, 2012 at 8:33 PM
Turnover!
Niners need a win here big time, I think. Seattle is just barreling over people right now.

December 16th, 2012 at 8:41 PM
Moss, for the score. Nice drive by San Fran.

Nada, no finger-pointing from me.
The POTUS is a bright enough guy. Ten years from now, he may have made a good presidential candidate.
December 16th, 2012 at 8:45 PM
That was a sack. Brady’s arm had not started forward.
December 16th, 2012 at 8:46 PM

This shooting is ripping me up. It scares the shit out of me and I am tired of it.
December 16th, 2012 at 8:49 PM
As a reporter, I covered that saga when it happened. It was almost impossible to get kicked off the FSU team in the 1990s, yet Moss managed to do it. Then he got handed a very lenient jail term and managed to fuck that up by smoking weed while on release.

The last time the Patriots lost a game in the second half of the season was 2009. I fully expected a struggle, but this is just brutal. Like I said last week, I’m more okay with their defense right now, but I dont like their offense.
Just gotta hope the SF defense is that exceptional.

December 16th, 2012 at 9:17 PM
How is it, with that throwing motion, that Kapernick isn’t an interception machine?
December 16th, 2012 at 9:19 PM
Yes, but with those tiny mitts, it requires all his powers of concentration.
December 16th, 2012 at 9:19 PM
Simple offense from a read/progression standpoint, and their run action is really effective
December 16th, 2012 at 9:19 PM
They have been really good on turnovers this year. For me, it’s the tendency to get pass-happy and go 3 and out in 20 seconds. That can kill your defense late in a game. Ten years ago, they used the passing game like a run game, but now they have a very good pass game, but a traditional one with a tendency to get away from the run at time. They also have had some games running quite a bit though, so I’m not passing too many judgement till the playoffs.
December 16th, 2012 at 9:20 PM
Gronkowski is a character straight out of North Dallas Forty.
December 16th, 2012 at 9:20 PM
Really? Someone tell the Steelers.
December 16th, 2012 at 9:21 PM
Right as I say that they make me look dumb, going back to high percentage passes, with a nice mix of play-calling.
December 16th, 2012 at 9:22 PM
Great fucking movie.
December 16th, 2012 at 9:22 PM
The Pats have not won a Super Bowl sinced Troy Brown retired. Coincidence?
December 16th, 2012 at 9:23 PM
Well the turnovers aren’t even the problem for the Patriots.
Nothing pisses me off more than when Brady has all day and throws an incomplete pass. I know it’s insane to suggest, but I wish he’d go back to taking the 4-5 yard run sometimes. That Jets loss a few years ago, with Rex dropping 8 on every play just drove me nuts.
December 16th, 2012 at 9:23 PM

Not sure NE can run on SF, even though they SF is playing nickel, until/unless NE is able to fatigue SF. I think the Pats need to feature Hernandez. Not an LB in the world who can cover him consistently
December 16th, 2012 at 9:24 PM

December 16th, 2012 at 9:24 PM
They should be averaging 45 points a game then I will be happy with it.
December 16th, 2012 at 9:25 PM
I love battles of two asshole coaches. I hope they double KO each either during the handshake
December 16th, 2012 at 9:26 PM
FYI: Branch is the only Patriot besides Brady to win SB MVP.
Also, what is up with kickers this year? Mason is atrocious in GB, and there’s a few others (Graham comes to mind) I’ve see that don’t exactly inspire confidence. Gostkowski hasn’t been great this year, but has been overshadowed by some of those train wrecks.
December 16th, 2012 at 9:27 PM
No TD pass here. No TD pass here…
December 16th, 2012 at 9:27 PM
I get the feeling that Rex Burkhead will somehow end up playing for Belichick.
December 16th, 2012 at 9:28 PM
WWoS, Redskins kicker is pretty spot on.
December 16th, 2012 at 9:29 PM
I didn’t like in 2007, either. I prefer an offense which complements your defense and allows it to flourish late in games. The Patriots defense plays much better when the offense avoids 3-and-outs, even if they maybe aren’t putting up the quick scores all the time. IMO. Same thing in baseball, in the regular season, you can outslug anyone, but it gets to the playoffs and you face a hot pitcher, you have to adjust. This team at least has the talent/committment to the run game to do that if necessary.
December 16th, 2012 at 9:29 PM
If the Pats lose, I’m absolutely playing the “how are we supposed to win the trenches when SF has been picking atop the draft for a decade?” card

December 16th, 2012 at 9:48 PM

December 16th, 2012 at 10:04 PM
I dont think its a big deal, since he is the only way they can make the playoffs, but anyone else hear how Adrian Peterson emphasized going for the rush record and really wanting it, without mentioning his team has a good shot at a playoff spot if they win out?

December 16th, 2012 at 10:08 PM
This is why I don’t play fantasy. Football stats are so misleading. “Will Chris Johnson break an 80 yarder against the Bears, once the opponent gives up because they lead by 40?”. Whack
December 16th, 2012 at 10:09 PM
maybe but i think it was a live interview. i mean he said it’s something “we can go for” and everything. wasnt being a jerk. and MN isn’t making the playoffs without him getting it anyway, it just surprised me.

THIS fucking guy….
December 16th, 2012 at 10:39 PM
Well it should be even worse. Or could be a lot better for New England. Either way, I fully expected it (no way they were winning both games, HOU and SF). Hopefully they adjust, and get ready for the playoffs. I mentioned before though, first time since 2009 they lost a game in 2nd half of season. Crazy.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:40 PM
The SF line worries me though. NE isn’t a bad rush defense, and they are getting pushed around.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:40 PM
All harbaugh has to do is go shotgun. Why he refuses is beyond me. Shotgun gives Kaepernik more options anyway particularly with his mobility.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:43 PM
I support the need for safety, but how was that receiver “defenseless”?
Yet another pick. Just one of those nights. Hernandez was “defenseless” then also, I guess.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:43 PM
Liking my chances with taking SF +5 in this game. SF is very physical, something that Pats teams have trouble with. Teams Iike HOU? They blow them out, teams that like to get up their face, ie PIT, NYG, SF, ? They don’t like them. You’ll see NE players now short arming the ball.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:43 PM
Hopefully they adjust, and get ready for the playoffs.

December 16th, 2012 at 10:45 PM
but how was that
receiverbowl of chili “defenseless”?Because it was fucking delicious.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:46 PM
Caribou agreed. The Pats, like the Packers, hate physical teams. Hit em in the mouth and watch em fold, especially Brady.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:46 PM
Haven’t seen the Pats get thumped like this since the Saints game in 09. But in Foxboro? …
December 16th, 2012 at 10:46 PM
I support the need for safety, but how was that receiver “defenseless”?
Local firearm laws. Glad I live in GA.

December 16th, 2012 at 10:46 PM
The Pats are having one of their worst execution games in ages. The Niners are playing well, no doubt, but the turnovers are absurd. I guess they were due after winning seven straight. Hopefully this serves as a nice kick in the ass, leading to renewed focus
December 16th, 2012 at 10:46 PM
If PIT wouldn’t have focked up my parlay in the afternoon I would have went big tonite. Damn.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:48 PM
I know, it invalidates the myth of Drew Brees as an all-time great
December 16th, 2012 at 10:49 PM
The Pats are having one of their worst execution games in ages. The Niners are playing well, no doubt, but the turnovers are absurd.
My view is that its more the 49er defense. Receivers just aren’t getting open and Wes Welker = 0 catches might be the secret.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:50 PM
Ha ha so great to see these TE’s against guys with the same physical gifts defending.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:51 PM
I wanna laugh & cry.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:51 PM
THIS fucking guy….
I know, it invalidates the myth of Drew Brees as an all-time great
I’ll remember clown fraud statements like this when I goto Canton for the ceremony.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:52 PM
SF is a Very physical team obviously and I knew that MIA was going to get it after I saw thEm hit CHI anD NO in the mouth. All that love for NE after the HOU blowout effected people. The line should been 2.5-3 PTA for home field adv and that should have been it?
December 16th, 2012 at 10:52 PM
I mentioned this during the week too, but they have a real problem against good secondaries because they don’t have a WR who can get open on his own. Even Lloyd has to be ‘thrown’ open by Brady, and if he’s off at all, it’ll be a long day.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:52 PM
Why? Open the door and get on the floor.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:52 PM
Ha ha so great to see these TE’s against guys with the same physical gifts defending. Beautiful….I need a bookie. 49ers are winning the SuperBowl.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:53 PM
The Welker point is fair. I’ll be the first to admit he is a very overrated player, and his dependence on a vertical threat to open space (no Gronk) is being highlighted. The first Brady int was just a dumb throw. The fumbles can definitely be credited to SF to a degree, but more of a premium needs to be placed on ball security.
The overall dominance of the SF lines is indisputable
December 16th, 2012 at 10:54 PM
You mean tight end?
December 16th, 2012 at 10:55 PM
I was going to comment that a 30-17 loss would be a victory at this point (before the SF TD). Pats are still a good team, now it’s just time to play hard, stay close in case something crazy happens, and learn how to beat the team in case you see them again.
/I assume it has to do with trading for the Rams’ players
December 16th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
Ummm, is there anything else TE means in football?
December 16th, 2012 at 10:57 PM
TD Pats. Anyone thing to. Can bring them back. If some, one can, it would be him.
December 16th, 2012 at 10:58 PM
Typing on my iPad laying in bed sucks. I’m a horrible speller
December 16th, 2012 at 10:58 PM
Chump football media members are hypnotized by stats. I don’t deny he’s getting in
December 16th, 2012 at 11:00 PM
The point was that Gronk is out. Good job, good effort on the attempted wisecrack though
December 16th, 2012 at 11:00 PM
I posted this earlier but at an odd time … so I’ll try again …
At the conclusion of the Giants – Falcons game, Pepsi broadcast a commercial about the “Pepsi – Giants Anthem” or something.
I spit my Cocoa Cola all over my TV screen I laughed so hard.
Falcons 34 Giants 0
December 16th, 2012 at 11:00 PM
Yeah it means one tight end. That your matchup of ‘tight ends’ involves one dude on the sideline inactive, and a WR corps that has lost at least their 3,4 WRs, and their #1 TE.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:02 PM
Other than that, pigskin, I do agree that the 49ers have done a great job holding Gronk to no catches. Of course so did Houston, and they lost, so now I’m just confused.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:02 PM
Cowboys too
December 16th, 2012 at 11:02 PM
Minn is’nt going anywhere, Playoffs or not. The guy has given Blood sweat and tears for that team while they continue to do nothing at Qb and a buncha waste at wr. So he wants to do something remarkable while carrying the team….Nothing wrong with that.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:03 PM
I’m still holding out crazy hope this game can go down like the Chicago game in 2001 (maybe 2002, I can’t remember). Down 3 TD’s, but it was so early in the third and a lot of bad luck had gone into it, so a comeback was possible.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:03 PM
Squawk box, I saw the same thing during the PIT/DAL game. Kelly clarkson has a Pepsi anthem for the Boys.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:05 PM
At the very least, Vic Fangio has to get some head coaching interviews this year, right?
December 16th, 2012 at 11:05 PM
PepsiCoke anthemFixed for better taste.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:05 PM
“hauled in by… oh shit, i didn’t think id have to pronounce his name, wtf belichick”
December 16th, 2012 at 11:06 PM
Let me run in , Niners.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:07 PM
Ahhhh – so just coincidence that the Giants were blown out by the Falcons in the home of Coca Cola. Great use of ad expense.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:07 PM
WWoS, you want crazy, go back that MIA/NYJ game on Monday from like 2000, when the Phins choked away a sizable lead and lost In OT. That game still burns my ass. Fock you Dave wannstadt
December 16th, 2012 at 11:08 PM
Lots of talent to work with on this defense…Give me the DC from ‘zona.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:09 PM
Tee-hee
December 16th, 2012 at 11:09 PM
Yeah then you sent him North to Pittsburgh so y’all deserve it as far as I care.
Man that SF defensive line is stout.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:10 PM
I like their talent too, but he’s done a nice enough job
December 16th, 2012 at 11:10 PM
Let THEM run it in, Niners.
/damn iPad
December 16th, 2012 at 11:11 PM
Lets change everything that was working on defense. Lets have the NFL sack leader in coverage in obvious passing situations. WTF
December 16th, 2012 at 11:11 PM
C’mon 8 minute drive!!!!!
December 16th, 2012 at 11:12 PM
How this man still gets hired as more than a position coach is one of life’s great mysteries
December 16th, 2012 at 11:12 PM
The Pats/Bears game almost didn’t seem like a comeback. It was 2002, and tied at half, then Bears scored 3 TDs quick. Seemed like a blowout, but so much time left it wasn’t as crazy as it seemed to come back.
Don’t remember the NYJ/MIA game, but the Tampa-Colts MNF game is the one I always remember as crazy.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:12 PM
A QB in the NFL is a competitive individual? I never understood that until Collinsworth told me.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:13 PM
jesus, another CB injury. not cool.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:14 PM
no flag?
December 16th, 2012 at 11:15 PM
A QB in the NFL is a competitive individual? I never understood that until Collinsworth told me.
So long as said QB’s name isn’t Mark Sanchez.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:16 PM
Score another TD here and the Niner’s sphincters will be too tight to run
December 16th, 2012 at 11:16 PM
Or Jay Cutler…(mr. i got a booboo i need to leave for the rest of this important game)
December 16th, 2012 at 11:18 PM
Brandon Lloyd has been AWFUL
December 16th, 2012 at 11:19 PM
ROLL OUT
December 16th, 2012 at 11:20 PM
Yeah it’s uncatchable because he got fucking run into you idiot fucking ref.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:20 PM
How that isn’t PI, I’ll never know. That is the textbook definition of not playing the ball
December 16th, 2012 at 11:21 PM
You try a flee flicker pass and your deep threat is Welker? Wtf?
December 16th, 2012 at 11:23 PM
NE line holds to no end. Last week against Hou they were grabbing the jersey of Watt when he tried to jump and i’ve seen so many tackles from them tonight it’s no wonder the defense is spent.
How does Brady not get an unsportsmanlike for that spike?
December 16th, 2012 at 11:23 PM
MAKE-UP CALL!! Beautiful
December 16th, 2012 at 11:23 PM
Man even as a Pats’ fan I hate that PI goes to the 1 yard line there. Such a shitty way to give up a drive.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:24 PM
You answering your question within the question. He’s Tom Brady
December 16th, 2012 at 11:24 PM

December 16th, 2012 at 11:25 PM
everyone does. esp against new england. stop whining.
feel free to use all dozen of your 2013 draft picks on WRs, belichick.
/kinda serious
//OL (always) DL and WR are biggest needs, if they re-sign Talib
December 16th, 2012 at 11:27 PM
I was really thinking they could come back, until that last INT/TD for SF. Somehow gotta get two more scores, before SF gets one. Tall order, but like I said, having time on the clock back in the 3Q helps.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:28 PM
NE line holds to no end.
They all must b/c you should’ve seen the giants today.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:29 PM
Horrible PI gift on tangled feet. Ugh.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:30 PM
NE is blatant dude…Not even a question. It’s one thing to hold, another to negate the strength of another team by means of said hold.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:30 PM
Kaepernick showing signs of a tightened sphincter. Hesitant to pull the trigger
December 16th, 2012 at 11:31 PM
The Patriots lost a SB because 3 different Giants got away with holding on one play. I refuse to apologize for anything NE gets away with.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:32 PM
The tangled feet thing is a croc…guys know exactly what they are doing…It’s a technique to tackle guys illegally. Theyget away with it to often.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
good gawd that surface commercial is annoying
December 16th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
More terrible officiating by Hochuli’s crew? No way!
December 16th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
nice to hear, and somewhat surprising
December 16th, 2012 at 11:34 PM
I will always mainly blame Asante Samuel because he’s Asante Samuel, and it’s fun to blame assholes
December 16th, 2012 at 11:36 PM
Oh I blame Asante, I’m just not allowed to in this forum anymore.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:36 PM
Lloyd actually catches the ball!
December 16th, 2012 at 11:37 PM
Lloyd can make plays, but needs the perfect throw because he can’t get great separation. Really nice play though.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:38 PM
Nice job, Brady.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:40 PM
Nice cheap shot on the slide.
And I’m definitely not a Brady fan.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:40 PM
Ya, he’s been open tonight, but has dropped at least three I can remember. I’ll take a regulation win to cover -3.5
December 16th, 2012 at 11:41 PM
Yeah it looked like a late/head hit, but I guess it’s pretty tough to pull up when you are trying to stop a TD.
somehow I complain about brady not running enough, and now he’s been running. win or lose, love the resilience.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:42 PM
Do Jets fans contemplate seppuku whenever they see Woodhead like this? Does Rex Ryan kick himself?
December 16th, 2012 at 11:44 PM
Is no one playing defense tonite?
December 16th, 2012 at 11:44 PM
Fixed
December 16th, 2012 at 11:44 PM
Nice job Caribou, Al Michaels finally made the NYJ-MIA ref.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:46 PM
Thanks Al Michael for bringing up the Jets Monday nite win. Fock you vinny testeverde, Dave wannstadt and John hall!!
December 16th, 2012 at 11:47 PM
WWoS, as my dad always says, “rather be lucky than good.”
December 16th, 2012 at 11:48 PM
what the hell, vollmer?
December 16th, 2012 at 11:51 PM
that is the kind of drive when the pats get too score/pass happy. down a td, it’s okay to run a few times, keep the pass rush at bay.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:52 PM
I’d like to thank the Niners for using James instead of Gore there.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:52 PM
great timeout though. why not save a guaranteed 40 seconds vs. 15 on offense
December 16th, 2012 at 11:54 PM
Pats gettin’ their shit pushed in on special teams
December 16th, 2012 at 11:54 PM
man, if the pats can go 95 against this defense… wow.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:57 PM
That was circa NE/Indi Playoffs.
December 16th, 2012 at 11:59 PM
Absolutely no reason to try to stay in bounds there.
December 17th, 2012 at 12:01 AM
Really hope there’s a dexter/homeland post tomorrow.
December 17th, 2012 at 12:03 AM
Collinsworth is right about them wanting to develop Kaepernick as a passer…paging Shannahan, take a page from that book. You got amore polished passer but keep running him at a high clip getting him banged up.
Apparently evaluating how to give your star qb the shortest shelf life imaginable.
December 17th, 2012 at 12:08 AM
I say exactly one try to the end zone, then go for the FG. just because it may be the best TD shot you get
December 17th, 2012 at 12:15 AM
Very likely New England’s going to Denver in January for the divisional playoffs, should be a classic.
