Smart move by them to not offer Hamilton a 5th year. They aren’t the Yankees, Dodgers, or the Sox. They cannot absorb a contract gone bad. Much like the Cardinals couldn’t make a deal with Pujols.
December 14th, 2012 at 8:29 AM
the Colorado River won’t be able to meet long-term demand …
While it’s nice they’ve been able to quantify that but that’s been known for a while. That article doesn’t touch on shady privatization of some water rights in the entire region that represent some of the worst abuse/misallocation of water in that region.
December 14th, 2012 at 8:29 AM
Funny that Hollinger is getting the chance to work in an NBA front office after Simmons spent so much time trying to get a groundswell supporting him for jobs in Golden State, Milwaukee and other wrong direction NBA franchises.
December 14th, 2012 at 8:33 AM
Someone has a thing for Blake Lively.
December 14th, 2012 at 8:33 AM
Zach Hodskins has one hand, but is a very good high school basketball player.
Played against a kid like this in high school. Not nearly the all around game of Hodskins but that kid could knock down the deep ball.

December 14th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
Colorado River has been historically low in and around Austin the past 2 years. You see lots of boats and docks sitting on dry land in the areas where people live on the water.
Something I’ve always wanted to do when the water levels are normal: when the state releases water from a dam in Austin to feed rice farms in East Texas, you can kayak or canoe all the way from Austin to the Gulf of Mexico. Takes about a week supposedly, you just pull up and sleep on the banks whenever. Would be fun, but also possibly Deliverance-y.
December 14th, 2012 at 8:41 AM
The Rangers are panicking! At least according to a columnist who clearly has no idea what they are actually thinking.
December 14th, 2012 at 8:42 AM
and it is a team, even though they have new ownership, that changed philosophy in their personnel decisions a few years back. smart move by the grizz.

“This Christmas” by Donny Hathaway. “Christmastime is Here” by Vince Guaraldi Trio.
One more reason I’m trying hard to break camp outta this place.
Shawne Williams had potential, but he’s a pinhead. And, he’s not the only former Tiger in trouble with dope.
Hollinger is a good hire for the Grizz. Either move downtowh or way out in the ‘burbs. dude. Stay outta North Memphis.

simulated bowl game results, anyone?
Those simulated kids are the simulated toast of the simulated town. Too bad nobody will give them any simulated compensation for their simulated efforts, while those simulated schools and simulated conferences rake in all those simulated millions.
Also, I like how empty those simulated stands were. Nobody sold their simulated ticket allotments.
December 14th, 2012 at 8:49 AM
I must have lost all my geographic knowledge because I wasn’t aware the Colorado river flowed through Austin, TX. Unless there’s two of them.

December 14th, 2012 at 8:53 AM
Let me just say this: everybody bags on the midwest (great lakes) region, but in the end, when places like AZ and Nevada suck up the West’s water, those states have the biggest natural resource in the United States. The fact they all entered into a Compact wont allow one cash-strapped border state to sell water. It’s pretty genius.

Pretty impressive. However, does ScoutFocus think they are fooling anyone when they speed up the video? I have a friend who hired a scouting service for her son who is a sophomore in a small town in Kansas for football. She explained it to me and it took every bit of my niceness not to tell her she was getting scammed and was an idiot.

Haven’t played Tiger Woods since like 06, so have no idea there. FIFA is consistently solid, haven’t heard of anything new the last year or two that puts it way over 2011 or 12. Madden, 11 was better than 12, haven’t played 13 yet.

Ours is next Thursday but it should be a good time.
Children aren’t allowed at office parties because of me. November of 2011 we had a going away party for the guy I replaced (spent two months working together while he trained me and such) and I spent all day setting up for the party and didn’t have time to eat. Three hours in to god knows how much wine and porter, and after doing several n-word heavy raps on karaoke (to an office full of Jewish lawyers) I was blacked out in the office bathroom after puking everywhere. Good times, good times.

December 14th, 2012 at 9:27 AM
I like Christmas music but only listen at home in the evenings, not in the daytime so I don’t get bombarded with it. I was at some discount store they had the Time Life set so I have that, and I have a # of Bing Crosby ones and then a few other purchased ones. Some great jazz cd’s for when the drinks are out and fireplace is going. Chris Botti’s jazz cd’s are some I enjoy.

Ours is out of office this year as well, which is great because it means I don’t have to cart cases of liquor back from the liquor store to the office. Downside is I can’t steal crates of liquor from the office.
December 14th, 2012 at 9:37 AM
We haven’t had a Christmas party in almost 20 years. Too much liability, the company sez.
December 14th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
I’d argue the lake water out by the areas of farm runoff is way fucking worse than by the big cities.
Yep, yep and yep. Cities have largely been able to get rid of the indutrial pollutants (sure there’s a lot left over), but nobody does shit about farm runoff.
December 14th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
This was one of the reasons that, at my last job, we always had an informal Christmas party after the “formal” Christmas party. No one wanted to appear drunk in front of the boss ever, so no one ever ordered a drink.
December 14th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
I’m always amazed that bosses allow alcohol to be served at office-sanctioned christmas parties. Too many things can go wrong. If I’m ever in charge of an office, I don’t think I’ll allow any kind of parties. Just let the employees go home early or they can just hang out somewhere else where the company isn’t liable for anything.
December 14th, 2012 at 9:38 AM

December 14th, 2012 at 9:38 AM
That was my initial feeling as well, but it wasn’t bad. I like the people I work with, so it was usually a good time. They usually put me in charge of the liquor buying, so it wasn’t all bad.
Now that being said, I’m excited to have it offsite again.

Just let the employees go home early or they can just hang out somewhere else where the company isn’t liable for anything.
WRONG. If you are paying people and giving them the afternoon off paid and they go to a bar for a holiday party, get trashed and the get in dui wreck and kill somebody (or along those lines), big companies have been getting sued and losing. I work in areas of workforce management for a large corporation and this is now prohibited where I am. People ruin everytyhing.

That Jelly of the Month Club subscription is really gonna be a kick in the sack. Hope you weren’t planning on a pool.
December 14th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
This is heavily dependant on what industry/business you’re in.
December 14th, 2012 at 9:42 AM
I’ve never worked for an employer that gave out christmas bonus. How much do they usually pay out for those bonuses, if you don’t mind my asking?

I think employing a 3rd party to assume the risk of serving the alcohol is probably the best way to mitigate the liability.
December 14th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
Very, very true.
Wall Street firms, for example, love them some Christmas parties.
December 14th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
My office has none, unless you count me drinking Scotch while tormenting my step-cat with a laser pointer. The girlfriend’s has 4. They’re all actually good, with the best one being at the Columbus Zoo (Christmas lights galore for their annual Wildlights).
December 14th, 2012 at 9:45 AM
Not sure, it varies by person. But last year I had been working here two months and they just handed me a hundred and fifty bucks, which was nice because I used it as gas money for the holidays. If they’re doing it, I would expect a few hundred considering how much I know I’ve billed for them this year.

A good manager will warn you now in subtle ways about weak bonus numbers so you don’t punch them when they deliver the actual news.
December 14th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
We always have Christmas luncheons, which ours is today at 11:30am, however I will miss because I’ve been home for the last three days with streph throat and an ear infection! Fockin cold already in December, I’m doomed this winter.

Last year I threw up in a garbage bag and we got kicked out of steakhouse at 5pm.
Years before this ugly frizzy haired girl cornered myself and girlfriend inquiring to know if we are “open minded” to which I replied “yes but we can do way better” and she started fucking crying.
Last night I drank 5 beers in an hour awkwardly at a cupcake store Christmas bazaar and then we went and played with lemurs. Seriously fucking lemurs in a giant lemur cage.

December 14th, 2012 at 10:01 AM
It’s painful. I live on one of the best public courses in the entire Dallas metroplex and I can’t use it. Cancelling my membership in September felt like killing a puppy.

December 14th, 2012 at 10:02 AM
You don’t have to live like a hermit with a kid, but you do have to prioritize. It’s funny that the first year after my son was born, I golfed the most I ever had, but the next year my days out dropped off the table, and last year I didn’t go at all.

Little known but great game …
There’s a game called “Metal Arms: A Glitch in the Machine” that was available on the older XBox. I think my youngest kid still plays it on his new console. You’re killing robots instead of people. We still consider it one of the best games ever.

Wow. My wife just got a $2500 cash bonus, an extra 7% put into her 401k, and a $1000 travel certificate for us to take a vacation.
My bonus comes today – will likely be around $15k, but unfortunately per company policy most of that is immediately transferred into company stock. Once the taxes are paid, I will only take home about 10% of that.
December 14th, 2012 at 10:18 AM

in the span of a year I will go from playing the most golf I’ve ever played to hopefully playing once a month
With 2 kids under 5, the key to golf for me is that I golf alone 1x a week as being able to get time with the kids and having that align when your friends (who probably now have kids) can play, becomes much more difficult. I also play do the weekend rounds at 6am in the summer and am home by 10am.
December 14th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Is the company stock restricted? If so, the taxes aren’t due until you sell it. You can transfer it in-kind to an outside account, and only pay taxes on the Net Unrealized Appreciation, rather than the entire basis.
December 14th, 2012 at 10:21 AM
The wife’s bonus isn’t Xmas money its her performance bonus.
Its not all that exciting when we just jam it all towards the mortgage instead of something cool like a lake house.

My company came to us and took a 3-year avg of our bonus and rolled it our salary. I outperformed all my peer group so I made out like a bandit; At least I am protected from the “due to a rough year we’ve cut out bonuses” which happens sooner or later to a lot of people.
December 14th, 2012 at 10:24 AM

“Why? Shouldn’t you be happy that he is not gonna go after those states that legalized marijuana?”
What he commented on was not going after the users. He specifically did not address whether the feds would go after the suppliers – legally established businesses in those states where it is now legal. That’s been the problem all along with the medical pot policy of Obama – sure, they don’t lock up the med pot users, they just target the state licensed providers, which in the end is the big deal.
December 14th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
40% is alot. If you can get out, look at your options and see if you can do it. MLPs generally aren’t liquid, though so you may be locked in or have to pay a penalty to get out.

Here’s my understanding of what happens. It’s given as “cash”, then 55% of that amount is automatically taken to buy company stock shares. The remaining 45% is used to pay the taxes on the “cash” and you get what’s left over.

I’m 5-9 picking Thursday games this year. I’m fine with getting rid of them.
I did tell y’all to take Cincy last night. I spent the evening not watching the game, but periodically checking Facebook to see Eagles fans say that now they have a REAL quarterback (1st half). Ah, they deserve Nick Foles to be a long-term starter for them.
