Los Angeles Angels are Giving Sportswriters the Boot to Create More Luxury Boxes, Gotta Pay for Hamilton and Pujols Somehow
When the news that the Angels were signing Josh Hamilton to a big $125 million contract, sportswriters in LA no doubt rejoiced at the potential story lines. Hours later, news came out that the sportswriters would be giving up their location to create more luxury boxes and revenue. Apparently, this is where Arte Moreno is going to find some extra change, Torii Hunter. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Angels will convert portions of their press box to a luxury suite providing “upgraded dining opportunities and amenities” for up to 80 more fans.
The television and radio crews will still keep their spots, but print and other media will now move to a new box far down the right field line and higher up.
“It really boils down to building revenue streams and finding as many ways as possible to grow,” said Tim Mead, Angels vice president of communications. “In talking to other teams, the seating behind home plate is a prime area to do things.”
T.J. Simers will not be in a good mood now. Expect him to be surly and piss off Mike Scioscia–like he recently did with Mike D’Antoni and Jim Mora, Jr.–on the rare occasions he visits the stadium now.

as long as there is still a place to file stories from, no problem with this. nothing worse than media that feels entitled to nice seats and food. you are working….you get stats and access to the players/coaches. pay attention, ask good questions, type fast

Good move, do not need some cliche drivel like a descriptive video of a box score.

seriously. the team could provide the game result on its website. later, the same site provides quotes from after the game with a format of Q:, A:, without comment
game stories are unnecessary. access needed for feature stories can be gained pre and postgame in the locker room, or by phone, or by question at pressers. i could see no pressboxes easily

The LA Times has one beat write, and ESPNLA had one two, but once the Dodgers started spending money the ESPNLA quickly got switch to the Doyer beat. Even the OC Register moved one of their Angels guys to the Dodger beat after the big spending spree.

If the Angels get off to a slow start, he’ll be there to push everyone’s buttons.

A agree with your entire assessment there. Still, glad I got out while I still had a pressbox seat on the 45.

-TjS to Scioscia “Mike, can you explain why you’d build a stadium so far from LA Times offices?”
-MS “Well, that really above my pay g..”
-TJS cutting him off “So your dodging the question, ok…why’d you sign a fiend?”

I just arrived home from the elementary school I work at in northwest CT. All I can say is if you have children then hug them tight tonight. We had no way of bringing this up to our students or even discussing. We just tried to go on with our day knowing what occurred in Newtown, CT and wanted to get the students home to their parents safely. It is tough as a teacher and even tougher as a parent.

with ya jdeeser. we sort of discussed this in the tyrus thomas post but then it devolved into the finest TBL political and military minds trading third reich documents and sharing the dick measuring ruler

Arte really wants to move the press box to downtown LA along with the whole team. Really, though, media credentials will get a sports writer any place in the ballpark so they quit their belly aching.
