Rob Parker Calls RG3 a “Cornball Brother,” Then Questions His “Blackness” For Being a Republican and Having a White Wife
First Take’s “embrace race baiting” movement continued today. The show’s producers poached an innocuous Robert Griffin III quotation. Willing hack Rob Parker ran with it and, as is his wont, made an absolute ass of himself.
The segment led off, after Parker hitting on Cari Champion, with the following quotation from Griffin USA Today.
“I am an African-American in America. That will never change. But I don’t have to be defined by that…We always try to find similarities in life, no matter what it is so they’re going to try to put you in a box with other African-American quarterbacks – Vick, Newton, Randall Cunningham, Warren Moon…That’s the goal. Just to go out and not try to prove anybody wrong but just let your talents speak for themselves.”
Parker led off claiming this quotation was evidence of RG3 “distancing himself from black people.” He asked whether Griffin was “a brother or a cornball brother.” He brought up the skin color of his wife, though failed to interpret what the Bentley meant.
We keep hearing this so it makes me wonder deeper about him. I’ve talked to some people in Washington D.C. My question, which is just a straight, honest question, is he a brother or is he a cornball brother”
He’s not really. Okay, he’s black, but he’s not really down with the cause…
He’s kind of black, but He’s not really the guy you want to hang out with. He’s off to something else.
We all know he has a white fiancee. People always talk about how he’s Republican. There’s no information at all. I’m just trying to dig deeper into why he has an issue.
Parker defended himself later, justifying the tenor of his earlier comment by claiming this was what “real people” were discussing in “the barbershop.” Even if that is the case, that somehow makes it appropriate discourse for purportedly professional journalists on a television program? This is not First Take’s first time using race to inflame debate. It’s not the first time that tenor has led to an embarrassing on air incident. It is far from the first time Rob Parker has said something profoundly stupid.
Race is a societal construct. Pigeonholing an individual and ascribing certain characteristics said individual has or should have based on their skin color is racism. First Take is not only tolerating it. It is provoking it deliberately as part of a broader strategy to appeal to the “barbershop” demographic. Once merely a silly annoyance, this show has become repugnant.
Perhaps “trending on twitter” or feeding the “wildly important goal” of improving ESPN2′s ratings is all that matters, but one would think that ESPN, a company that has been relatively progressive in a number of areas (putting women in consequential positions during sports coverage), would be embarrassed.

Is it safe to google cornball brother at work?
It appears “cornball brother” was a term invented today by this guy. The Google search just came back with a thousand blogs reporting this.
December 13th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
Black rappers say white girls are more fun, so I don’t really see the problem here
December 13th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
If RG3 is a “White Republican” let’s get First Take ask what breed of dog he would strangle
December 13th, 2012 at 2:45 PM

Parker is an idiot of the highest order
December 13th, 2012 at 2:45 PM
Honest question #1: Do people consider it racism if you talk about your own race?
Honest question #2: What is a cornball brother?
December 13th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
Honest question #3: Who is Rob Parker?
December 13th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
My turn, Rob Parker!!! Tell me what I’m really thinking!!!
December 13th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
“Cornball brother” is not on Urban Dictionary.

Sarcasm switch – set to ON
I love how we as black men play this game for the entertainment of others. “I’m blacker than you, ya Uncle Tom”.
Sarcasm switch – set to OFF.
Really? Damn near 2013, and we’re still playing this game?
December 13th, 2012 at 2:47 PM
Pigeonholing an individual and ascribing certain characteristics said individual has or should have based on their skin color is racism.
It’s actually a stereotyping , but we get the point.
December 13th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Rob Parker definitely opens his mouth and removes all doubt that he is a fool.
December 13th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
one would think that ESPN, a company that has been relatively progressive in a number of areas (putting women in consequential positions during sports coverage), would be embarrassed.
No shit. I hate the direction this network is going. This was a show I used to “hate watch.” I made up my mind recently it is something to avoid entirely.
December 13th, 2012 at 2:48 PM
That’s ’cause they don’t watch Tyler Perry movies.
Stereotypes, ahoy!

One of my cousins (white woman) married a black man and both of them had family stop talking with them and refuse to accept the marriage. Really opened my eyes to how ignorant our country still is.

Please feel free to explain it from a black racist’s perspective.

Saw this on PFT:
Asked by fellow panelist Skip Bayless about the fact that Griffin braids his hair, Parker said that’s an aspect of Griffin that he approves of.
“That’s different, because, to me, that’s very urban,” Parker said. “Wearing braids is, you’re a brother. You’re a brother if you’ve got braids.”
He just kept going!

December 13th, 2012 at 3:26 PM
Ha. It’s always funny to hear people think of evolution as one evolving from another, rather than two species/races etc evolving from a common ancestor and then both continuing to evolve divergently (or not, in the case of humans).

December 13th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
acknowledging it as a societal just means that Parker was speaking, rather inarticulately, on facets of that construct. It seems that he was speaking on RGIII’s assertion that he doesn’t have to be defined by being African American and read that as him running away from being Black. I didn’t see it that way. As a matter of fact, I commented in a post on here a few days ago in that regard when someone compared him to Michael Vick. But, as a Black man, because of this social construct, I know that you can’t run from being identified by your race. The historic unemployment numbers, incarceration numbers, poverty numbers, etc. tell me that, and if that wasn’t enough, this past Presidential election tells me that. Everyone knows the unspoken fact that social construct came into play as a consideration when people stated that Luck would be the safe pick for the Colts. It is what it is.
December 13th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
It’s difficult to speak rationally to the “Then why are there still monkeys??” crowd.

December 13th, 2012 at 3:30 PM

December 13th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
Yes. Calling race a “societal construct” is inaccurate. It’s a physical fact that has had large social consequences.
December 13th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
it’s like those two sea snake species I read about this morning! one was in Asia and the other in Australia, but they were assumed to be the same species until recently when they just happened to evolve separately but ended up wearing the same clothes to the same party one day after never meeting before! except one of them had a way cooler accent than the other.

December 13th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
I’m sure this occurs..but I am not sure this is the best example. Luck had been the top prospect for two plus years. Griffin was always good, but took it up a notch his Junior (and final) season.
December 13th, 2012 at 3:31 PM
hard to argue against that, even in jest.
luck was the safe pick because of rg3′s spread offense and having less tape, not race. of course, morons (speaking generally, not to you) would obviously bring race into it…but i think amongst nfl people, it was all scheme and experience.
December 13th, 2012 at 3:32 PM
RG3 is already the most beloved figure in DC, regardless of race. Black people embrace this dude just as much as white people. Rob Parker (and anyone sharing his frame of thinking), is a poison on society.

or the Colts were setup personnel-wise for a dropback passer. oh, and their logo is a horseshoe and they had the opportunity to draft a guy with the last name of Luck versus a guy with the last name of Three. you’re the societal construct.

December 13th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
apparently… i apologized for offending duffy. but now i’m not sure how to politely say that i think characterizing race as a societal construct is inaccurate. race, to me, is always going to be a genetic determination, and not based on if you have tattoos and listen to rap music and vote republican. in saying race is societal, and then saying RGIII doesn’t conform to those standards, he takes away his race.
December 13th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
Everyone knows the unspoken fact that social construct came into play as a consideration when people stated that Luck would be the safe pick for the Colts.
Interesting, I took this to mean that Luck’s skill set would have the smoother (safer)transition to the NFL game…

i mean, obviously genetics, geography/environment and pure random luck play a large part in it too.
December 13th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
this is mind-numbingly stupid. most casual fans or nfl fans hadnt ever heard of RGIII until halfway through last season. luck had been on the radar, and played for an NFL coach.

I started to give Duffy the benefit of the doubt by typing that it was a social construct in that there are still different races because historically people have bred with others of there race, but then figured that he wasn’t thinking that at all and stopped.
because you’re right, it is 100% genetic

they are considered a race because they have common ancestors with a low amount of mixing with other races historically. most jews still share the genetic hallmarks of their race.
that said, having it as a religious and a racial label is confusing. people can be religiously jewish or racially jewish, and the two can be completely unrelated. also, predicting how jew-ish (see what i did there?) someone is using genetics isn’t as easy, suggesting that mixing of the race is more and more common, and that eventually there might not be that distinction.

So, NFL scouts and GM’s make selections based on how long fans have heard of a certain player? Your mind would have to have been numb to make that comment. After the combines, after the workouts, you know when professional scouts and GM’s make their final decisions, there were teams that had Griffin ahead of Luck or neck and neck.

December 13th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
the point i was making, albeit poorly, is just that the ‘evidence’ for racism is basically that the white guy was assumed to be better and was picked higher.
i actually just went back all the way to the 1978 draft to see who was picked ahead of doug williams, since he was black. he went #17 overall, top qb. next two guys were at 50/51. If you make decisions in the nfl based on anything other than who’s ready and the best fit for your team, you won’t be making decisions for long.

December 13th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Vick never played 13+ games 4 years in a row. It’s just not sustainable. I’m sure RGIII is talented enough to adjust to being a pocket passer, but if you look at someone like Ben Roethlisberger, or even Brady, who used to scramble every now and then, the risk of running downfield outweighs the reward when it costs you your QB for a bunch of games.

December 13th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
In Indiana, picking Andrew Luck as your next QB once you’ve released number 18 was a safer pick than picking RGIII, and I am saying the visual played a role in that. Griffin was never like Cam Newton where you had to determine whether or not he could read defenses. His intelligence had already blown scouts away. Although I’m wrong about his rushing attempts in college, he was still recognized more as a QB who could run as opposed to a running QB like Newton or Vick.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
knifey: the US may not pull blood to see exactly how much ‘black’ you are, but self-identification of race is still genetic. im not sure what you mean in that a physical trait can be a societal construct, particularly in demographic studies.
racism is a societal construct in applying specific attributes to people possessing certain genetic qualities…

December 13th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
If i had the number one pick and needed a QB, you better believe id take luck.
in fact if i was drafting today, id take luck again. and based on rgIII’s style and injuries, and the way the two interact, id question the sanity of anyone who wouldn’t.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
that’s bullshit…you had to absolutely determine that because, despite his intelligence in interviews, he didnt have much evidence of that defense-reading intelligence ON TAPE.
of course, that isn’t a death knell, but luck had tons of that shit on there going back to being a sophomore.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:18 PM

December 13th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Everyone knows the unspoken fact that social construct came into play as a consideration when people stated that Luck would be the safe pick for the Colts. It is what it is.
It should be pointed out here that Andrew Luck is really really good, and I haven’t heard a single Colts fan who thinks they picked the wrong guy. Also, as people have pointed out. Luck was an uber prospect. Hailed as the best QB talent since Elway. He came from a pro style offense, had an NFL head coach, was already used to calling his own plays at the line of scrimmage etc. Also Luck is an elite athlete for the QB position, so it’s not like RGIII had some huge advantage in that category. Luck being the safer pick had way more to do with how awesome everyone knew Luck was going to be than it did questions about RGIIIs ability or his race.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
counterpoint: indianapolis is white and racist as fuck.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
if you are a team with a #1 pick and a once in a lifetime chance to draft tim duncan to play with peyton manning, you have to take the safest pick you know the most about. luck is safer not because of his race, but because of the track record and style.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:20 PM
Because Luck was the best qb prospect since Elway. He didn’t run as much, exposing himself to injury like Griffin. Luck is much bigger, thus more durable naturally. Griffin is a smart guy, but Luck’s intelligence is legendary by football standards. In fact, he got to call his own plays at Stanford. Luck was considered a lock #1 pick for yrs prior to the draft, while Griffin really burst onto the scene his last yr. Aside from all these factors though, it was totally racial
December 13th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
actually i change my mind. id have pick rg iii just because you know the fans are tuning in to see his fiance’s tits in the press box.

Amish do make great funiture.
Sad but true. Indiana is the bastard love child of Alabama and Mississippi, jsut a bit further north. Crazy Klan stories from back in the day. Just recently, John Wooden’s old high school couldn’t have home games because the students did incredibly racist stuff. Basically, they don’t care if race is a societal construct or genetic reality.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:22 PM

December 13th, 2012 at 4:24 PM

Indiana is pretty racist, but the most popular athlete in the state other than Peyton Manning is Reggie Miller, and RGII has that whole only being a “cornball brother” thing going for him that would have made him much more tolerable to the racists here. If he would have won, they would have gotten over it.

I guess I just have a problem with how race is tracked…like how they stopped using “Caucasian” because someone from India could technically fit that description. or how Asians were just “Other” for a long time, and then combined with Pacific Islanders. the idea of just what a “race” technically is just seems very inexact.

December 13th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
Whatever that means or is worth. Griffin is 6’2″ 220 pounds, so please stop overstating his size as an issue. Griffin’s offense with the Skins exposes him to injury. Put him in a standard offense and he can operate in that as well.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
Apropos of nothing except talking about Indiana:
Years ago, my then-gf and I were driving to her grandma’s funeral in Noblesville and stopped for breakfast at a McDonald’s in Martinsville (birthplace of the modern KKK!).
We went in, the place was a wreck, pure chaos and there was a girl, maybe 7 years old, behind the cash register. She was wearing paper dog ears, I guess as a cross-promo for the 101 Dalmatians reboot that came out around then. We were really, really stoned.
We thought that maybe she’d escaped from the ball pit or something. But no. She rang up our order.
We left and there was a solitary kid in the parking lot with Down’s Syndrome trying to sweep up trash. It was windy and there was a ton of trash just swirling all around him and he was getting absolutely none of it, just sweeping like one cigarette butt up at a time. It was very Last Picture Show. (I hear, never actually seen the movie.)
The end.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
I agree that the nooses and burning crosses with UCLA on them were a bit much.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
but you are still trying to label race as a marker for genetics. you aren’t trying to denigrate Indians, just find a designation which is more informative for whatever scientific purpose you have.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
the reason most genetic studies are done on white people isn’t because scientists dont care if black people get sick, they just need to find the most homogenous population to avoid confounding data.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
His offense exposes him b/c that’s his style of play. Trying to minimize the size difference is dumb. Take a look at the two and tell me who is abler to take hits. The sprinter or the guy who could play NFL tight end?
December 13th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
but can he operate it as well as Luck does in Indianapolis? doubtful, and I’m not sure what that has to do with race.

December 13th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
Not many do unless they play in conferences that play pro style type of defenses, which is why the interview process is so important. When I said they were impressed with his intelligence, I wasn’t talking about him knowing physics. I was talking about him being able to break down defenses and discuss what he was seeing when presented with questions in the interviews.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:52 PM
If you’re asking me if RGIII can triple the number of interceptions he’s thrown, I’d have to answer, why not? If you’re asking me if he can read defenses without the read option offense, I’d say the offense has been enhanced by his pre snap read ability, as evidenced and highlighted by the TD pass he threw to Santana Moss late in the first Giants game.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:55 PM
And this is why nobody takes your point seriously. There’s a little something called context
December 13th, 2012 at 4:57 PM
Not many do
Luck did. You’re acting like RGIII was taken after Blaine Gabbert or something. RGIII is the #1 QB taken almost any other year. Luck was the more ready made prospect and his ceiling is just as high if not higher. it was totally justified.
December 13th, 2012 at 4:57 PM

December 13th, 2012 at 4:59 PM
Trying to present 220 pounds as small is dumb. His offense is there because he is able to cover up many holes in the Redskins offensive personnel with his skill set, especially since they lost Fred Davis and while Garcon was out with injury. He creates running lanes for Morris, and gets receivers open just on the threat of his ability to run. It’s not an offense that can be sustained for a long period of time, but for this year, he is getting it done.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:03 PM
not to mention, the skins traded a boatload of early-round picks for the chance to get him. he wasn’t just some consolation prize or a late-round pick like brady was.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:04 PM
Trying to present 220 pounds as small is dumb.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:05 PM
im not sure why it cant be an offense that’s run long term…this is their first year in it, once it gets comfortable and refined, RG3 will be more likely to avoid the big trouble.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:06 PM

December 13th, 2012 at 5:09 PM
Luck was a great prospect, and after his Jr year and the postseason workouts and interviews, so was RGIII. All things being equal, being in Indiana, and replacing a White legend, the Colts made the safe pick and chose the White boy over the Black boy. I never said Luck was a bum, I just said color, location, and circumstances played a factor in making Luck the safe pick.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:10 PM
No. Colts picked the better player. Plain and simple
December 13th, 2012 at 5:10 PM
We were in a Honda, so, no.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:16 PM

Yeah, that’s great. Except it’s not true. We’ve explained why Luck was the “safer” pick and they are all football related.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:20 PM
I’m four beers in….what’s happening in here. I assume all of society’s race issues have been worked out in 3
December 13th, 2012 at 5:21 PM
backpedal, what are you talking about? The Redskins devised that offense because as they are currently constituted it gives them the best chance to win. It’s pretty much what Shanahan said after the Rams game. It doesn’t mean that is the only offense he can run. You take Luck’s extra 20 pounds and he gets hit in that offense enough, he’d be hurt as well. Take RGIII and place him in that Colts offense where he can throw to Reggie Wayne 30 times a game, he wouldn’t be hit as much as he is being hit now.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:21 PM
“in 300 comments” is how that was supposed to end.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:23 PM
It hasn’t been, MS, but I did tell an extremely dull story about Indiana. That has to count somehow.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:23 PM
When wrong, resort to foolish hypotheticals. Luck is never going to play in a scheme designed for him to run, RG3 does. Accept reality on reality’s terms. Griffin is naturally predisposed to more injuries, based on factors we apparently agree upon. This alone makes him the lesser prospect
December 13th, 2012 at 5:27 PM
Fwiw its worth, Luck has be hit more than any other QB in the league. Bruce Arians is almost Mike Martz bad in protecting QBs. RG3 would have taken more punishment in that offense, not less.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:28 PM
It hasn’t been, MS, but I did tell an extremely dull story about Indiana. That has to count somehow.

December 13th, 2012 at 5:32 PM
That’s a good one. You explained it, or check that, “we” explained it, so it makes it true. Meanwhile, I’ll explain that Irsay made the right calculation and determined that the fire he caught by releasing the most popular athlete in the history of the state would have been further enflamed by choosing RGIII. The safe pick scenario happens every day all over this country with people alot less qualified than Andrew Luck. I don’t know why you guys are shocked that it could happen in the NFL. Hell there were people on here and other places who said that Tannehill would be a better choice than RGIII. Just goes to show that the visual thing is real.

You have yet to articulate why Griffin should’ve been picked over Luck. You say Luck was taken because of a racial component, implying Griffin should’ve been taken instead, if race weren’t a factor. Tell us, why?
December 13th, 2012 at 5:38 PM
Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez has the highest WAR evah! seems to only support RG3 because he is black. What if he were white, and Luck were black. What would you say then?
December 13th, 2012 at 5:40 PM
Darrell a couple things:
Luck was by far the better prospect at draft time according to every scout. 32 out of 32 teams would have taken him #1. Not because he was “safer”, but because he had a higher floor and ceiling than any other prospect in the draft. Irsay’s choice wasn’t calculated, it was a no brainer according to his scouts.
The size difference between the two is worth noting given how much both get hit and 220lb may not be “Vick” small, but its below average for a QB. Redskins need to do a better job protecting him (as do the Colts with Luck).
Sadly, this is true.

I do not believe that to be the case at all, but for the specific team with the #1 pick (IND), it was a no-brainer.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:44 PM
If it’s Spencer, he’d say, “I’ll take Weeden.”
December 13th, 2012 at 5:45 PM
Wrong? I was explaining to you the genesis of the offense the Redskins run. I think you’re attempting to present it as the Skins running that offense in order hide RGIII as a QB, when in fact they’re running that offense to hide the flaws of the personnel on that team. Shanahan doesn’t have the offensive line he had in Denver, so the threat of Griffin running freezes defensive linemen and linebackers long enough for the OL to get on top of them. He doesn’t have the greatest receiving corp in the world, so the play action and run fake brings the safeties and lb’s up to the line of scrimmage to open up lanes for the receivers. But in regards to staying in the pocket, making the subtle move to avoid the blitz, making the pre snap read, he does all of that.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:45 PM
He messed around and got a triple-double?
December 13th, 2012 at 5:46 PM
Just because “the safe pick scenario happens everyday all over this country” doesn’t mean it happened in this case.
Myself and other posters have pointed out why it made sense from a football perspective to pick 1 guy over the other. All you have done is point out that the guy who got picked first was white.
December 13th, 2012 at 5:46 PM
No one can say for certainty Luck is better than RG3 right now, and we really won’t know for like 10 more years. The dudes are both good. As a Redskins fan, I can say I would take Griff 6 days a week, and twice on Sunday. But that also has a ton to do with the Shannahan’s game planning/current team personnel as well.

Jesus Christ. You know the Colts wanted RG3 to work out for them pre-draft, and he declined the offer? He wanted to go to the Redskins at #2. There was speculation at the time, that if the Colts did the unthinkable and took RG3 #1, that he would pull an “Eli,” because he didn’t want to play there. Take off your race colored glasses just this once, maybe?
December 13th, 2012 at 5:56 PM
I think if RGIII went to the Colts and led them to the record they have now then the fine folks wouldn’t have a problem with him at all.Winning cures a lot of things..unless you’re McNabb in Philly. However, just from a football aspect, Luck is a “safe pick” because you don’t really have to worry about him taking damage from scrambling or getting hurt because his body isn’t made to take a beating.

You guys are so emotional in your arguments, that you’re all over the map. Nowhere did I say that picking Luck didn’t make football sense. All I said was there were other factors involved. Really the only “football” arguments I’ve seen made on Luck’s behalf on here is that he was deemed the greatest prospect since John Elway for whatever that’s worth. And for whoever said it, no 32 out of 32 teams would not have taken Luck first.

He hurt his knee 3 years ago, and didn’t miss any games before or since, so I think the durability advantage is minimal at best. But if that’s the only advantage, it pretty much proves my point. Maybe the USC dude can come up with some things Luck does that RGIII doesn’t.

I didn’t say that. Andrew Luck still runs, a lot more than most actually. But, the read-option/pistol puts more wear/tear on a QB. It is the best fit for RG3′s skills, no doubt; but more can be done to protect him with a semi adjusted scheme.

It’s easier to argue with me if you picture me as the irrational race card player than someone who is making a point based on a thought out opinion. Don’t worry though, the angry black guy card is played out across this country every day.

You’re just trying a bit too hard that’s all. Get rid of the eagerness, and it’ll flow much easier.
