I recall Jay Mohr mocking Merchant on the Rome show about 15 years ago.

Jay Mohr wishes he had 10% the career of Larry Merchant. And all Larry did was do some weird ass soliloquies (he was seriously talking to himself) and ask some questions every few weeks. Jay Mohr is awful. He is lucky he has pictures of Jim Rome blowing a juvenile goat.

Merchant is haggard and outdated.

He never bothered me. He was a nice bit of unintentional comedic relief after watching some damn good tense fights. I was probably laughing at him and not with him, but I’ll miss him all the same.

It was Larry Merchant whose inane lipid-eyed commentary damages more brains than Pacquio’s right hook. Larry Merchant, the tuxedoed stooge, is boxing’s old joke told over and over again … It’s time to send the blue-eyed devil out to pasture and save us all the added indignity of watching a buffoon drown in the verbal mire of his own make.

Change a few words in there and that describes Gus Johnson.

He asked simple questions because he was dealing with boxers after a fight. Boxers are mostly dummies (who else would take punches professionally), especially after being concussed for 12 rounds. I wouldn’t expect the back and forth to be anything other than “inane”

I personally will miss the guy. I enjoy seeing people being who they are and not hiding it. Too many announcers apologize for every little thing and this guy went out there completely smashed and did his thing.
