What Does the Yahoo-NBC Sports Deal Mean For Peter King, Whose Contract at Sports Illustrated is Up Soon?
As we reported last month, Peter King’s contract at Sports Illustrated expires shortly after the Super Bowl.
King is the No. 1 NFL insider for the most popular sport in the country, and he’ll be coveted by the likes of NBC Sports, ESPN, and probably even the NFL Network (even though few in the industry think he’d go there). Sports Illustrated could have a hard time keeping King, who has been there for 23 years.
Might this week’s Yahoo-NBC Sports deal have an impact on King’s situation with Sports Illustrated? After speaking with media insiders for the last few days, here are some theories floating around about the landscape, and where King might fit in:
* ESPN, Fox, NBC, and CBS are all gearing up for a sports “battle” that will span the next decade. ESPN is at the top, clearly, and the other three networks are acquiring as much “property” as possible for a run at the Worldwide Leader. Property consists of, among other things, live sporting events, websites, radio stations and talent.
* Fox Sports is in good shape. It has the NFL, the World Series, NASCAR, and college football. Of the three competitors to ESPN, Fox had the best web presence thanks to the MSN portal … until the NBC/Yahoo deal.
* NBC Sports has the highly-rated Olympics, Sunday Night NFL, popular-again Notre Dame football, and if it ever comes back, the NHL. [UPDATE: Also, the EPL.] NBC is attempting to build up the fledgling NBC Sports Network (see here for the gory ratings details), and build its radio network, too. NBC’s major weakness was web traffic … until the Yahoo deal.
* CBS has the NFL, the Masters, the Final Four and SEC College football, and of the three networks, probably the best radio situation.
It could be argued – depending who you talk to – the trio are on equal ground. At the risk of making King out to be too much of a difference-maker … anyone else see Fox/CBS trying to get involved here?
For years, ESPN has been able to lure talent and pay them on the writing and TV side. Now that it has help from Yahoo online, will NBC Sports do the same? How handsomely would they pay him to have MMQB on NBC Sports.com, with Yahoo’s portal pushing it? Bob Costas can’t get ratings on NBCSN, but could a 30-minute show hosted by Peter King? For anyone that closely follows media movement, Ken Fuchs of Yahoo previously worked with King at SI.
I have zero guess as to where King will end up if he leaves SI, but some seem to think ESPN will step up, throw down a figure like $2 million per year, and King won’t be able to say no.

Fox also has UFC and World Cup in 2018 and 2022 fwiw.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
What does Peter King even do, other than talk too much about shitty coffee ? He doesn’t break news. Why is he so sought after ?
December 12th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
King is the No. 1 NFL insider
This is highly incorrect by about any standard other than perhaps pageviews.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
If there is a measurable audience that wants to hear about crappy beers, the Red Sox and moronic takes on the NFL we should just blow our whole society up.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Why is he so sought after ?
It is like Rick Reilly. At one time King was a really good writer and has rested on his paycheck since then. Someone is going to overpay for King and then have a horrible situation on their hands like ESPN does now with Reilly.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Don’t pay any attention to him. Where’er he goes won’t influence my viewing habits. At all.
This is one case where I’m not rooting for the old guy.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:10 PM
I feel like Jay Glazer and Micheal Silver break way more stuff than King.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
since when do we call window shoppers “insiders?”
December 12th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
I feel like Jay Glazer and Micheal Silver break way more stuff than King.
I really don’t pay attention to who breaks what, but does King break news at all anymore?
December 12th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
NBC also has the Pro Football Talk/Hardball Talk, etc. group of websites as well.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:14 PM

Yep. It’ll be a Kevin Brown signs with the Dodgers scenario. He’s terrible on TV. His writing has declined in quality. He gets beaten on all the stories by Glazer or Werder. He is subpar at anything outside of basic week-to-week NFL recaps.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
I’m somewhat amazed that Peter King has somehow not worked for ESPN up to this point. Seems inevitable.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Fat fuck PK will most likely stay
December 12th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
But athlete dongs, sideline reporter rumors and the Jets, that’s a sign of society’s health!
December 12th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
I really don’t pay attention to who breaks what, but does King break news at all anymore?
Only Brett Favre coming back stories and possible fights for the back-up QB spot in Arizona. He’s all over that shit.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
fixed.
it’s unfortunate that someone is going to pay this guy handsomely for his blathering about train rides and minor league baseball.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:16 PM
Minus the part where the Yankees bail them out.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:16 PM

December 12th, 2012 at 1:20 PM
I don’t know, they’re both equally shitty. Reilly more douchey but PK more smug
December 12th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Peter King fell victim to the same thing that plagues everyone when they get a following. They make the mistake of making the stories about themselves, and assuming everyone actually gives a shit about them. I don’t think he’s a bad guy, just comes across as arrogant.
That said, how many of you criticizing him still follow him on Twitter? I don’t.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
If you guys haven’t already, take the advice of s1rweeze, and get started reading sports on earth dot com. I didn’t know it existed till he mentioned it, and it’s really good.
If you do that, you can pretty much stop ever reading Peter King. There’s just no need. Now for nine other things I think i think, click the next button.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
King is infinitely more likable than Rick Reilly.
His peers wont send photos of him passed out on the job like they do Reilly. They will show Peter King dominating the media spread, double-fisting plates of food with a desert plate balanced on his gut.

December 12th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
King’s face really looks like an Oompa Loompa in that photo.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
This x 100. Once a journalist starts making himself part of the story, it’s over. Nobody cares. Just regurgitate what Goodell told you to write, say Vilma’s a bad guy (but not Fujita!). But I’m the opposite on the coffee thing – that’s humanizing without being part of the story.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
i feel like it’s what grantland was supposed to be.
to be a real sports website, you need TV reviewers, and a youtube channel. And as little sports as possible.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Along with his asshole butt buddy Mike Florio
December 12th, 2012 at 1:26 PM

I’ve been reading for leitch and posnanski, occasionally sampling other guys. Someone was pretty preachy about drunk driving. He was black.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
goodell should get suspended.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
King is infinitely more likable than Rick Reilly.
They’re cut from the same “douchey, privileged baby boomer” cloth.
They are both former greats. Reilly was once brilliant but became a caricature of himself and regressed more than any prominent sports writer over the past 20 years. King was great on some beats and then once his MMQB column took off, he became self-indulgent and also suffered without a proper editor to corral him in. Both worked pretty hard but being a top writer is impossible unless you write all the time. Multi-platform dreams derailed King’s writing. Reilly, it’s just odd. I’d say he’s a drunk but I know some writers who are bad drunks but they don’t plagiarize and still fucntion. Reilly does neither.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
i actually like bedard, and i follow him because he tweets good football info you can’t get anywhere else. doesn’t seem to have an agenda, and just calls it as he sees it.
it’s just a pet peeve when writers on twitter mix it up or act like jerks to the idiots that tweet them. you can’t win a battle against stupidity, and it just makes you look unprofessional.
i dont know how you resist, but it’s just a tough situation. i did like bedards answer to me in the chat, where he just turns off/won’t look at mentions for during/after a game, because he’s got a job to do then.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
I can’t take him seriously. Large, high-def tv screens have made him too lifelike.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
so where does simmons fit in to this discussion? wasn;t he once great then anoying as fuck except for his podcasts?
December 12th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
/pours one out for dr. z
Dr Z. had that flowing writing style that King is trying to rip off in his writing twilight. But Dr. Z had nuance, worldly experience, perspective and sophistication. PK has none of these traits.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
HumbleBrag?
December 12th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
The Reilly twitter feed makes me want to throw my phone at the wall.
PK’s MMQB, much like Easterbrook’s shitty TMQ, who thankfully I don’t have to read thanks to KSK and Magary, are just paragraph after paragraph of putting palm to face.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Jay Glazer
I can’t take him seriously. Large, high-def tv screens have made him too lifelike
i get that his insiderness has broke stories but he reminds me of the podunk local sportswriters i knew whose self-worth came from their yuk-yuk buddy-buddy relationships with who they covered
December 12th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
Never swing down. Cowherd may be an insufferable blowhard at times, but at least he understands this.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:34 PM
I think his podcasts are equally as annoying. I listened to one about five years ago with Walton which was atrocious and haven’t clicked on one since.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Dr Z. had that flowing writing style that King is trying to rip off in his writing twilight. But Dr. Z had nuance, worldly experience, perspective and sophistication. PK has none of these traits.
and grumpiness that i love as well as x and o breakdowns i bet king can;t touch
December 12th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Man I miss that guy. He was the best. His announcer reviews were great, he was the ONLY guy pimping Sam Rosen.
And yeah despite the dumb name, SoE is fantastic. Tomlinson, their college football guy, is good. Mike Tanier is about 394839 times more readable than Barnwell, Schatz or most of those other Football Outsider types. Dave Kindred is always great. I’m hoping they have a good college basketball guy too.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Never swing down. Cowherd may be an insufferable blowhard at times, but at least he understands this.
He shut down this website for making fun of him when only KC, Irish, and Paolo lived here.

/fixed, for your unconscionable racism
December 12th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
He got the same way… makes all his writing about HIS rules for everything. Wants all of sports to fit into his carefully-designed narratives and paradigms. Also, not sure what makes him think it’s his job to go around and ‘fix’ and control all sports. Give him some power, he’ll go Spanish Inquisition on the sports world.
thats why i dont care for his writing too much, though i read it occasionally. i do still enjoy his podcasts though.
usually the writers i like are ones i’ll read a linked article, then look up and happen to see who wrote it. found a lot of baseball prospectus guys that way.
easterbrook is just a terrible human being. PK > Reilly >> Easterbrook. Not many people in the world I’ve never met, who haven’t committed a serious crime, that I dislike more.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
Z did have some good x&o’s stuff. Guy would time punts for hangtime and such whenever he watched a game. Dedicated.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
King can tell you though which Hilton’s and Holiday Inn Expresses are terrible along with which 16 year baristas makes the worst pot of coffee.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
Maybe if Peter King sold HGH to NFL players he’d get the scoops Glazer gets.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
I’ve listened to probably 90% of his podcasts (minus the reality TV and other non-sports ones) and he’s a pretty competent interviewer, and has gotten better over time. Walton was a tough one because of the subject, and because Walton couldn’t talk about the book/experience. Don’t hold that one against him.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
spence, phillymantis, dixon, billybuckner are all among the commenters who follow PK. what about him makes his twitter feed so indispensable? what do you miss by unfollowing him?
what do you not miss by not following him? Who knows. A twitter follow is pretty innocuous. It’s not tacit approval of his skunk stripe, or his method of retweeting. It’s just a thing. You click the button once, and when you’re looking, the guys tweets come across your screen until you get sick of it, then you click the same button and he vanishes.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Grantland is depressing at times. Yeah the idea of a Reality TV League or whatever is funny at first, but the amount of joy that writer has for it is kinda sad. Plus there’s a “Bad QB League,” some “Lets Laugh At People Getting Married” thing, and plenty of other “Irony Can Be So Ironic Sometimes” type stuff… spare me
December 12th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Never heard of it until today.
/definitely not getting any more work done today
December 12th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
King is horrible on twitter.
there’s one guy I follow on twitter who, after a big play he doesn’t like the result of, always tweets “crown their asses.” But I don’t unfollow him, because sometimes he says things I am interested in.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Well put. King badly needs an editor.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
this is how I came to not follow CRM, and he came to block me because i mentioned it.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
Oddly enough, there’s an unfollow button. Works really well too.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:42 PM
Simmons is brilliant in that he took the Dennis Miller approach of not actually knowing what you’re talking about (by all accounts Miller is a moron) and use catchy rants and pop cultural references from the prior decade to make it seem like you’re an expert on something. But took the snarkiness that made Miller abrasive and instead replaced it with an “gee shucks just a normal guy” tone to make it accessible.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Peter King doesn’t re-Tweet The Iron Shek that I know of so he’s got that going for him
December 12th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
sounds like a must follow.
King is so bad, that you just have to follow. Like Whitlock.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
this is how I came to not follow CRM, and he came to block me because i mentioned it.
CoRMy used to be one of the guys, but JMac’s thin skin was contagious. But I try not to talk to him or about him, because it frustrates him to be made fun of.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Anybody seen the Pro Football Talk show on NBCSN that airs weekdays at 5? Have not heard one iota about it.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Grantland is poorly edited. The writing is just not that good. The writers cannot self-edit and there is obviously no oversight. When Good Writers Go Bad: Grantland Style. It’s exactly what happened to Peter King on MMQB but happened within one week of launch.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
I started truly disliking Simmons around the Pats 2007 run, but I legit began to loathe him after he began talking shit about the Bruins playoff run and not caring about when they played and then all of a sudden having seats against the glass for the Cup. Fuck you Simmons
December 12th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Peter King doesn’t re-Tweet The Iron Shek that I know of so he’s got that going for him
if you retweet Iron Sheik, Rovell, Peter King, any other NFL insider, Condescending Wonka, Jim Rome, the Pope, or JMac, you’re an asshole.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
i still like simmons just fine. it’s just toilet reading for crissakes.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Nah. Whitlock became unfollowable a while back. I think I may have just blocked him to not have to see his tweets.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
I’m pretty sure if I had to follow King/Whitlock/Reilly, I’d just walk around angry all day. I unfollow people for RTing one of them, or Pete Abraham or anyone else.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
When they traded Thornton and he wrote his “divorcing hockey” or whatever post is absolutely reeked of “don’t know shit about this sport, don’t care about it, going to talk about why I have a reason to not talk about it now.”
December 12th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
what about jimmy traina? people seem to follow/RT him, yet i cant understand if he has a purpose in life.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:48 PM

December 12th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
I just can’t take twitter that seriously.
I mean, I’m pretty sure I’m a day or two away from seeing a naked Brittany Maclin tweet on my timeline next to something from Pope.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
Speaking of Twitter, I know everyone already follows him but OldHossRadbourn has been on fire the past couple days going off about ESPN’s Hall of Fame stuff.

December 12th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
he helps with my nfl picks a lot. i read his column, then any picks he justifies sounding like an idiot, or with complete bullshit, or going against his ‘good’ rules, i pick the opposite.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
I can’t fathom why Peter King would be considered a valuable property. What would he add to the ESPN brand?
December 12th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
I do love twitter but I think Mobutu summed it up best this weekend.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
maybe the most interesting comments section i’ve read in weeks. kudos for the actual thoughts on the story.
man, that’s refreshing to read.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
I guess I’m in the minority who gets a kick out of the Iron Sheik, maybe cause I was a huge wrestling nerd and loved him when he appeared on Stern.
Thankfully I don’t see anyone ever mention PK posts on Twitter except from Richard Deitsch.

I have no idea who he is, just know that he’s in his forties or fifties and lives in Florida.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
It would have to be a scenario where ESPN was essentially blocking a competitor from getting him. But I agree, he would add nothing to what they already have.

December 12th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
i dont hate peter king either…i find him to be no worse a self-promoter/indulger as any of the douchebags that write for national football post. even the FO guys like tanier have a MUCH smarmier attitude than PK.
i guess im just soft on peter king because he’s got such a cheery attitude and clearly loves what he’s doing. how can you hate the happy retard? yall are so mean.
December 12th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
To get back to JMac’s topic, I don’t see how NBC wouldn’t throw more money on him as he’s already appearing frequently with dickhead Florio and always references Florio’s shitty jokes. Fuck them both
December 12th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
King’s flaws aside, he clearly has talent.
As opposed to
-Florio
-Glazer
-Mortensen
-Any other ESPN NFL employee
December 12th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
To get back to JMac’s topic,
looks who turned from outlaw into suckup with only one stern warning!
p.s. Once JMac has complimented the comment section, he generally flies off the handle and bans somebody within 3 days.
You’ve been warned.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:01 PM
was a good post… nice summary of the networks without any useless commentary. facts in the post help set up a discussion about it, better than a piece with too much baseless opinion (anywhere, not specific to here).

December 12th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
If his writing was condensed without his insufferabe opinions about life and the felating of Favre and Goodell, it wouldn’t be too bad.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
He’s an ok writer…but has no on-screen presence, and breaks no stories. I just don’t see what is so valuable about him. I guess it’s strictly a pageviews equation.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:04 PM

I think something to consider here, is that while we, as very involved and intelligent sports fans may realize that Peter King isn’t anything special, he is probably how most more casual fans get their news/stories.
Most times I hear PK’s name away from here is from a friend who is relaying some story (that I heard 3 days earlier) about his or my NFL team, and asking what I think. Much the same way the commenters here are a relatively small %age of the visitors, I imagine that readers of sports blogs and their immediate unbeholden views is a small percentage of sports consumers, and like it or not PK sets that market.

Link.
would love if there was an actual video of jmac swinging a hammer
December 12th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
he’s meh. matt waldman, chris brown and the ol’ brophy posts are better.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Who writes for them besides Lombardi? I haven’t read them in quite some time.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
oh and bowl pool. do i need to sweeten the pot? links i’ve never shared here for the winner

/lights the “Rex Kramer” signal
// GIF by 5:00, please

Pretty much how I feel. I apparently like PK more than pretty much everybody, and I don’t really like him all that much. But I really don’t get the hate for him.
Cannot believe KSK still exists. That run of naming sports blogs “Gerund-Person” was really stupid. Hugging Harold Reynolds is the only other one I can think of now though.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
I just don’t see what is so valuable about him.
he has a brand and that’s enough for fans who don’t care about anything but fb 101
December 12th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
I stopped reading when Drew Magary stopped writing for it.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:13 PM
Not a fan of confidence picks when it’s taking 35 bowl games into consideration
December 12th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Opposite here. But hey at least I get to read all those Deadspin posts about his kids and ranting about how unfunny the things that he and the rest of the DS commentariate did for years are.

i wouldn;t be if it cost money. as it is, it’s just another choice for time wasting
December 12th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Me, too, but I hate when the happy retard start weaving himself into the stories narrative. I’ll skip sections.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Oh I do too. I’d say I read MMQB probably every other week, and the ones I do read I skip 40% or so. But there’s usually some interesting stuff in them and it’s not like it’s a personal affront to me that he exists.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Does he still comment how edgy he is because he takes the commuter line? Look at how city I am? I ride the train bitches!
December 12th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Drew Magary is super frustrating because sometimes he’s very good but most of the TIME GOD CAN YOU BELIEVE HOW STUPID THIS WHATEVER BULLSHIT IS FUCKING SHIT MAN.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
Klosterman is the worst of the bunch. Tried reading one of his pieces the other day and my eyes glazed over.
Barnwell’s not much better.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
You’re right, in that, at some point, the trope of capitalizing a sentence to express outrage isn’t that funny.
Drew Magary’s worst work, however, is still better than anything anyone left at KSK writes.

I also feel compelled to read TMQ every Tuesday for the latest update on the Unified Theory of Creep.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
I thought you got a warning wave of the banhammer last week.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
He used to live in the South End here, made him real urban and close to Back Bay Station where he could hop on the Acela and complain about the noise in the Quiet Car
December 12th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
It’s either really good or the “you know what grinds my gears?” episode of Family Guy. No in between.
Also keeps writing about the NFL on Saturday every year while ignoring the anti-trust exemption which is fucking maddening.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
I’ve never really read KSK enough to know about their writers but I will take your word for it. Sometimes it’s all right, like I didn’t mind the Why Your Team Sucks series that much. But sometimes he’s just like, “Hey let’s talk about (insert mundane topic here). Can you believe how much said topic sucks?” And it’s just boring.

Also, Florio is the cocksucker of the walk.

Him and Darren Rovell vie for it on a daily basis

One of my resolutions for ’13 is to shoehorn “last call, Cowboy” into conversations on the street.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
And that kids is the story of how SROD was arrested for protitution
December 12th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
Bill Barnwell only reason to look at Grantland. NBC sports should move Costas to MSNBC, have him do sports updates on Rachel Maddow show. Birds of a feather.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:31 PM
Butters! Or should I say “Buhwheet”?
December 12th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
I keep this, put in safe place.
December 12th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
He gets a lot of hate on here but I don’t read him enough to know why. All I know is that Rembert annoys the fuck out of me, and Jay Caspian King too
December 12th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
The last time I tried to install spellcheck on IE (which we have to use in the office) the whole damn browser had to be reinstalled after I fucked something up so I’m working without a net here
December 12th, 2012 at 2:46 PM
Biggest problem with PK is that he obviously has tremendous access but NEVER breaks stories anymore. Also his smug elitist attitude – what, you’re not interested in the travails of my crippling inconveniences staying in 5 star hotels.
