Tommy Tuberville Left Texas Tech Recruits at the Dinner Table – Literally – to Take the Cincinnati Coaching Job [UPDATE]
Tommy Tuberville was eating dinner with Texas Tech recruits and Red Raiders assistant coaches at 50-Yard Line Restaurant last week when he abruptly got up. What happened next will surely go down in recruiting lore:
“The waitress brought our food out, and we thought (Tuberville) went to the bathroom, but he never came back to dinner. Then next thing I know, the next day, he made an announcement that he’s going to Cincinnati.”
Texas Tech athletics spokesman Blayne Beal confirmed Tech coaches did take players to dinner that night, which he said is a common occurrence on visits by recruits, but was unaware of any incidents that happened at dinner.
The next morning the recruits were scheduled to take a tour of the campus, but Tuberville did not show up for it, Danzey said. That’s when offensive line coach Chris Thomsen, who was named interim head coach Monday, came back to the group and broke the news Tuberville had been named the new head coach at Cincinnati.
Tuberville got up from dinner and never returned. Coaches bailing on their teams before bowl games has been happening for years, but this is the first time (I’ve seen) a coach bail on recruits during dinner for another job.
Tuberville ran to Cincinnati to become the Bearcats head coach. I think it’s safe to say it’ll be his last Division I job. [Wreck 'E 24/7]
[UPDATE: As Rapsheet notes, Tuberville is famous for saying, "they'll have to carry me out of here in a pine box," while he was the head coach at Ole Miss. Days later, he left for Auburn."]

Holy shit that’s ballsy.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Classic.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:25 AM
I was really hoping the use of the work epic was going the way of the dodo bird.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Cincinnati is the better coaching job?
December 12th, 2012 at 10:26 AM
Hey serf I’m out of your league now, go fuck yourself.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:28 AM
Maybe the food sucked.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
I remember once literally shoving a girl away to dance with a hotter girl instead.
/Where’s my goddamn raise?
December 12th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
hilarious
December 12th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
I broke up with a girl in 2nd period. So that I could ask a girl in 4th period to homecoming.
/had to reconcile with gf after school
December 12th, 2012 at 10:32 AM
Why is it safe to say that?
December 12th, 2012 at 10:33 AM
Love it. You can tell the recruits weren’t worth a shit either because had they have been, he would’ve pulled them to the side and said, “hey, you boys like Northern Kentucky? Come with me.”
December 12th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Love it, there has to be at least one coach who did the equivalent?
December 12th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
if he had taken the coaching job at Brussels University i would say ol tommy was on the lam from something
December 12th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
I think it’s safe to say that more because he’s 58 years old and not so much because he’s like every other person who is willing to leave a job for a better job.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
but this is the first time (I’ve seen) a coach bail on recruits during dinner for another job.
You got to admit, 50-Yard Line Restaurant is a stupid name for a restaurant.
I think it’s safe to say it’ll be his last Division I job.
Can you show your work on this? Why would Cincy be his last D1 job?
December 12th, 2012 at 10:36 AM
“You are aware…”
/hyena’d
December 12th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
kind of hard to blame him for leaving ole piss for Auburn though, the delusional fucks in Oxford probably would have fired him anyways, thinking they could do better, a la, David Cutcliff.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Also, I really hope the Big12 expands in a year and brings Cincy along for the ride.
Though, really, this was a clean break for Tubs and Tech. The Leach acolytes in LBK never really liked Tubs whose first priority was a tight end and a defense.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:37 AM
Honestly, I don’t understand it myself.
The stadium is half the size of Tech’s. The facilities aren’t as good. Maybe the team is slightly better but it’s in a much weaker conference. You have access to a lot better recruits in Texas obviously.
I haven’t heard the financials so he either took the money and ran or he wanted to coach somewhere with less pressure and easier to get into a good bowl game?
December 12th, 2012 at 10:38 AM
In a Freudian slip, when asked why he only ordered a side salad for dinner, Tuberville responded that he “was saving room to desert”.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Crappy menu for a steakhouse, too (though it’s cheap).
December 12th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Jason, I’m leaning toward siding with those who contend you know little about college football.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Tubs hated Lubbock. Also, his wife is from outside of Cincy. Also, she got into a wreck in LBK and killed somebody a year or two ago (awkward). Also, he got a raise.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Would you rather live in the city that ignored Buddy Holly or the city that embraced Johnny Fever?
December 12th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Dipshit CFB coaches always land on their feet…Bobby Petrino wasn’t even out of the game for an entire year
December 12th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Didn’t know any of that but that makes sense. Why did he hate LBK? I’ve never been there so I can’t comment on the actual area itself.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
If you had been there, you wouldn’t need to ask.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
From what I hear Lubbock sucks and he was getting out before the heat got put on him after next year.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
the city that embraced Johnny Fever?
you mean elected jerry springer mayor
December 12th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
I was out at a sports bar last night and there was a program on the tv in front of me and they were talking about Petrino’s most likely next destinations. I couldn’t actually hear what they were saying but that they were even talking about it was amazing.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
“Top o’ the Bat”, the rotating restaurant atop the Louisville Slugger museum’s giant baseball bat is the worst name.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
That is just awesome. Those recruits probably weren’t worth shit or as rittyrich said he would have pulled them aside.
/Also fuck Texas Tech for the Leach firing
December 12th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
If you had been there, you wouldn’t need to ask.
i spent a scary night in amarillo once. how’s lubbock stack up to yellow town?
December 12th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
I made the same trip. Graduated Auburn, went to Tex Tech for law school. First day I saw LBK was the day I moved into an apartment and went to orientation. It looked like Baghdad compared to Auburn.
Plus the football culture there isn’t as intense as in Auburn but their fans are just delusional enough that they think they can win like Auburn (’08, ’11, ’12 notwithstanding). Plus the whole Leach deal. Tuberville was the guy who replaced the guy….that’s not a good thing.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
Fair enough.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Why did he hate LBK? Rockchalk
Imagine a more remote Wichita.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
It’s in the middle of nowhere. Eqaul distance to Amarillo (N), Midland (S), Roswell, NM (W) and Abilene (kind of E).
They get scrap recruits because nodoby want to drive the 9 hours from real Texas to that hell hole.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:45 AM
Say what you will about Lubbock, I grew to love that place. It’s ugly, all right, but damn I had a blast for 3 years.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Despite being a Kansas B-Ball fan, I live in PA and have never actually been there so Wichita doesn’t help me out. But appreciate the effort.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:46 AM
Imagine a more remote Wichita.
And that is actually giving it too much credit. I’m just assuming you have some familiarity with Kansas due to your name.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
I’d say his first year at Wazzu and the player reactions to him showed Tech wasn’t unjustified in parting ways with him…he’s just another in the line of the CFB bully coaches
December 12th, 2012 at 10:47 AM
December 12th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Despite being a Kansas B-Ball fan, I live in PA and have never actually been there so Wichita doesn’t help me out. But appreciate the effort.
Well, damn. Have Ritty explain it to you.
It’s ugly, all right, but damn I had a blast for 3 years. Ritty
Some of my finest memories from college are the weekends we drove a hour to Emporia to party. Such a shithole. Those folks knew how to have fun though.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
anyone in a bowl pool?
December 12th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
I always hated driving through El Dorado. Something about that place gave me the creeps, like it should have been the setting for a horror movie.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
And fought Larry Flynt
\Flynt shoulda stayed in Columbus
\\Lived across the street from Columbus Schools for Girls
\\\I believe he still donates money to CSG
December 12th, 2012 at 10:50 AM
When people ask me about LBK, I explain it like this – any old dorky asshole can have fun in Austin. There’s something for everybody there. In Lubbock, you better be cool enough to have fun friends.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
This place is terrible but has a great name.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Tuberville a fan of the old dine and ditch staple. Saying you’re going to the bathroom then peacing out. I like the cut of his jib.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
I always hated driving through El Dorado. Something about that place gave me the creeps, like it should have been the setting for a horror movie.
I pass by it on the turnpike a few times a year. I once spent a hour at the Wal-Mart getting a flat fixed. Also, it has a prison and a lake and lots of oil refineries. That is about all I know of El Dorado. That and it isn’t no city of gold.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
That sounds fun
December 12th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
Imagine Scranton but 9 hours from NYC and Philly
December 12th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Tubs whose first priority was a tight end
That was Sandusky’s priority as well.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
This place is terrible but has a great name.
You damn Canadians are weird. In a good way, but still weird.
/Assumes that bar is in Canadia.
Soused – In the small town where I grew up, the bar was being sold and was being bought by the local drunk who was always there. When he’d leave his house in the morning, he’d tell his wife he was going to the office. The office was the bar. Hence, when he bought the bar he renamed it Jim’s Office thus negating the need to lie to his wife each day.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Just looked it up on Wikipedia. I did not know the locals pronounce it El Dor-RAY-doh. Although now that I do know, of course they do.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
Back when I was living in DC, there was a place called Common Share. They had disgusting shag carpet upstairs and furniture that seemed to come from a crack house. But everything – everything – was $1.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:58 AM
I’ve always liked Tubberville, but as I’ve said before, all CFB coaches at all levels are jackass hypocrites. I experienced it firsthand in the recruiting process a few years ago and there’s nothing that could ever change my opinion on this.
December 12th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
i just set up a bowl pool. my first, so please let me know if it needs work

December 12th, 2012 at 10:59 AM
Holy shit. Jim’s office is still open.
El Dor-RAY-doh. Although now that I do know, of course they do.
Yep. You don’t want to know how Kansan’s pronounce the Arkansas River.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
still surprised Tennessee didn’t go after Tubs.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:00 AM
the old dine and ditch staple.
i have a nice scar on an eyebrow from my one dine and ditch experience
December 12th, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Reminds me of Matthew McCoughaneuafuyhayfas however you spell his name, whose brother Rooster lives in my hometown, and named his son Miller Lyte because, as the story goes anyway, he bet his wife he’d take Miller Lite to church or something like that.

Epic is a perfectly boffo word. Only a buffoon or an ass hat would wish for it to go away.

No wait, I remember, when they got preggers, his wife or somebody told him he wouldn’t be able to carry around his Miller Lites while he was chasing the baby. So he just named the baby Miller Lyte.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
Have been to at least a couple small bars in Iowa called The Office.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:04 AM
WHOA. for real?

Have been to at least a couple small bars in Iowa called The Office.
The Library is a popular small town bar name also.

Yep. Without Google, I think she ran a red light too, but it was a weird enough accident that she didn’t get prosecuted or anything…but I can’t remember.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
I’m not. he’s like the Jennifer Anniston of coaches…pretty from the outside but there’s something wrong because dude’s keep cheating/leaving her.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
There is a chain of those in TX college towns I think, Lubbock included. We have The Bar and The Field Office.

My favorite bar name is in Galveston TX. The Hard Times & Misery Saloon.

The correction to this story made it no less enjoyable. The fact that his brother’s name is Rooster brings me joy.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Nope. Field offices in this case strictly related to the oil business.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Rooster and Miller Lyte.
Thank you, Ritty.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
I don’t think that’s his given name but everybody calls him that. I’ve met him once. And he was wasted.

Last call, Tubby
December 12th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
5 or 6 other people have already said, but I’ll pile on…why on Earth is it safe to say this? In fact, I’d say it’s at least a 50/50 proposition that Tubs will at some point coach at another D-1 school.

The recruits became suspicious when Tubberville told the server, “separate checks please.”

Miller, Lyte and Bud were all characters in Repo Man. That is awesome.

Don’t forget that Tuberville is still under investigation for being part of a Ponzi scheme while he was the head coach at Auburn.
http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/28/report-tommy-tuberville-listed-in-fraud-lawsuit/
The man got out of Tech before he got fired. I hope Cincy enjoys watching mediocre football. Because that’s what they’re about to get.
