Matt Schaub in Prime Time is Not Nearly as Good as Matt Schaub During the Day
Matt Schaub, QB of the Houston Texans, in four night games this season:
vs. the Jets (MNF win): 14-for-28 209 yards, 7.5 ypa, 1 TD, 1 INT
vs. the Packers (SNF loss): 20-for-33, 232 yards, 7.0 ypa, 0 TD, 2 INT
vs. the Bears (SNF win): 14-for-26, 95 yards, 3.7 ypa, 1 TD, 2 INTS
vs. the Patriots (MNF loss): 19-32, 232 yards, 7.3 ypa, 0 TD, 1 INT
This is not an indictment of Schaub, who is a great play-action QB, and probably one of the 10 best QBs in the NFL.
(Fun fact: Schaub and Tom Brady are the only starters this year not to lose a fumble.)
He played well against the Jets, not against the Packers, the weather was poor in Chicago, and then made one really costly decision on a pass near the end zone against the Patriots that hurt badly. It’s not like he’s out there pulling a Lindley.
The Texans, though, might be 0-4 in the above games instead of 2-2 if the Jets were any good (had the ball late with a shot to win the game, but failed), and if Jay Cutler had not been knocked out and replaced by Jason Campbell in the second half.
If QB rating is your thing, why are Schaub’s four lowest performances – based on that metric – in night games?

We have different definitions of fun.
Probably because 3 were on the road and they came against the #1, #8, #9 and #14 rank defenses in DVOA according to Football Outsiders.

we should get tim ryan a fat slaub jersey.

I agree with this gentleman.
As soon as I saw the four game sample size leading off the argument, I knew it couldn’t be a Lisk joint.

I was surprised to see that despite being the AFC South, Schaub has only 2 games this year with over 300 yards passing. Yeah, I know passing yards is a relatively meaningless stat, but I assumed he threw for more yards than that.

Saying you wouldn’t want a guy who kicked you in the sack on your team is a douchey move

When you have the running game that the Texans do, and they use Foster quite a bit in order to set up the play action later, there won’t be as many passing yards. Due to their success on defense earlier in the season I think Schaub was often working with a short field too. it’s an offense predicated on the notion that they will run on almost any down/situation, which is why the play action and bootleg is so successful for them. But it doesn’t lead to a lot of throws deep down field.

I was not aware I was placed on probation. My reaction is in the Udinese post.

Huh, didn’t know the fancy mathematicin’ favored the Packers like that…they have been quietly good this season save for that Giants game debacle

Wouldn’t worry about it too much.

Do you really believe in stuff like this? Or is this just to stir the pot?
Because if it’s the latter, Skip Bayless…the guy you claim to have no knowledge of but clown on constantly…this is something he would say.

Judging by your reaction in the Udinese post, WWoS, I’d say you’re not taking my advice.

I liked this post the first time I read it on Grantland by Bill Barnwell.
I guess when you run out of ideas, you just go over to Grantland and Deadspin and “re-work” articles that are days old?

Nice qb, but has never won a big game in his life. Name me a memorable Matt Schaub game and I guarantee it’s one he lost (spinning air fumble anyone?)
And that’s with an elite RB and receiver.

Spencer, not to make a pun out of it, but your last comment in the SEC thread was pretty tasty. “Tim Ryan doesn’t know the meaning of had enough.”

The Texans, until last year, haven’t been a very good team. And spinning air fumble was Sage Rosenfels. But that’s a nice attempt at the eye test there.

Your notion of measuring ‘greatness’ is embarrassingly feeble-minded. But keep fucking that chicken.
December 12th, 2012 at 9:39 PM
At what point did I lay out specific criteria for measuring anything. The post says the guy sucks when the lights are on, I said I’ve never seen the guy win a single big game. Part stats, part eye test, all fraud.
I’m still waiting to hear which game he’s played that I should remember, 9 years in the league.
