Carlin Isles is Blazing Fast: Former Track Athlete Now Taking Rugby Sevens By Storm
Carlin Isles was a sprinter, and before that a running back/cornerback at Division II Ashland College. He had the 36th fastest time in the 100m among Americans in 2012. A longshot to reach the Olympics as a member of the track team, Isles decided this summer to give Rugby a shot for the first time, and contacted the Team USA CEO. After working in on the qualification circuit, he was quickly elevated to the USA Sevens team and has now played in three events. The above video shows that he is taking to it rather well.
Team USA has improved its standing in each of the last three tournaments on the World Cup Circuit, and Isles will be on display in the upcoming tournament in Las Vegas (and on NBC) in February.

That Rugby tag doesn’t get used very often I’m guessing.

So why doesnt get go down when he gets in the “endzone”? You get more points by taking it to the middle of the fgs?

Always wondered why football players (DBs and LBs especially) didn’t get more involved in rugby.

So that they don’t get injured playing a sport that doesn’t pay them nearly as much as the sport in which they turned professional.

so he plays for Arsenal?
Browns are going down, spencer. Cousins or Griffin, doesn’t matter.

knitty it helps for the after-td kick to center it because that’s how they line it up, where you touch in the end zone
/all kinds of fun with that sentence

Rugby isn’t an NCAA sanctioned sport, insurance for injuries comes through the rugby body rather than the school and NCAA, could not imagine coaches would be happy with their football players participating given the injury risk.

The 2-point kick after you score comes back from where you put the ball down. So the more in the middle the easier the angle for the kick.

Meant football players with no eligibility/NFL prospects.
December 12th, 2012 at 12:53 PM
Ah gotcha.
Probably because they’re pussies.

“Extra points” are taken from the spot same latitude that the ball is touched down in the end zone…so it just makes for an easier kick.

6 and 12 for me. The rugby after party cannot be beat.

I played rugby in college and honestly more of my lingering injuries came from pickup basketball

I remember my hs coach pulling me from class to tell me he’d suspend me if i kept playing padless tackle fb with my stoner friends
December 12th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Did he also tell you that you were in need of a serious attitude adjustment before the fall?
December 12th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
agreed it doesn’t matter, but only because whomever’s the QB is going to die via phil taylor ass smothering.

I actually think this would be a cool strategic rule for American Football, if the point after came from spot where touchdown was actually touched down. Would make playcalling at goal line more strategic, and teams might go for two rather than kick extreme angle extra points.

Anything to eliminate the fade route.

might even force teams to adjust personnel. favor kicker accuracy over power? have the punter do the long stuff and kickoffs so the kicker can focus on skill shots? more euros?
i say lets gamble a lil…1 point for every 10 yards of distance.

there’s just so few people on the field in 7′s. It’s a small man’s game.
I love top level rugby though, so I’ll happily watch those NBC Sports Rugby 7′s tourney cutups.

Rugby guys tried to recruit me in college. Did a quick count of the missing teeth, no thanks.

Would be nice to see this dude play 15′s as well. The more exposure the US gets the better and this dude is not only fast as f but has great skills with the ball and on defense. Could help us come World Cup time.

Stumbled into the Heineken Cup on TV a few years ago. That finale is a must-watch. I’m not a massive rugby fan, but that and the World Cup are incredible events to see.
