Ballin’: Blake Griffin Put on a Dunking Exhibition vs. Chicago, and Anderson Varejao Posterized Jordan Hill
LA Clippers 94, Chicago 89: Blake Griffin was dunking all over the place – though for pure aesthetic value, DeAndre Jordan’s soaring put-back might have been the night’s best jam – and the Clippers won their 7th straight. The Bulls started a backcourt of Hinrich and Belinelli; the latter took 22 shots (!), missed 16 of them, and got dunked on by Griffin.
Cleveland 100, LA Lakers 94: It’s scoring one night, lack of defense the next. The constant? LA is strugglin‘. Coming into this game, the Cavaliers had lost 17 of 21 games. It helped to get Kyrie Irving (28 points, 11 assists) back, and CJ Miles kicked in an unexpected 28 points, but how do the Lakers lose this game? No wonder Mike D’Antoni was so pissed off. Kobe scored 42, and Dwight Howard scored 19 points and collected 20 rebounds, but nobody else did anything. LA is 9-13, currently 12th in the West.
New York 100, Brooklyn 97: The Nets lost their fifth straight – all without Brook Lopez – and Jason Kidd was the hero. Melo scored 45 points on an efficient 24 shots. This is turning into quite a rivalry. Andray Blatche continues his torrid offensive play (23 points). He’s been a major surprise (11.8 ppg) for the Nets after flopping in Washington.
Denver 101, Detroit 94: “You can’t throw it too high,” for Javale McGee, said the announcer. That appears to be a factual statement. McGee scored 12 points in 18 minutes and blocked four shots. Bouncy Pistons rookie Andre Drummond grabbed 11 rebounds in 21 minutes.
New Orleans 70, Washington 77: The Wizards scored just 11 points in the first quarter, but the Pelicans Hornets could only muster 10 in the 4th. Washington, in winning its first road game of the season, improved to 3-15. Jordan Crawford scored 26 for the Wizards. The Hornets shot 32 percent from the field and had more turnovers (15) than assists (14). Anthony Davis, in his first game back from injury, scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

There is something to be said about the young players who exel once they leave the Wizards, or as Tony Kornheiser used to put it: curse of Les Boulez. Javale McGee, Andray Blatche, Nick You……… neva mind! Melo killed the Nets last night.

Varajeo ballin so hard. There is no scenario where he should be traded IMO. Not sure if anybody saw but there was an play in 3rd where Kyrie got ISO’d on Kobe, ended up getting blocked.
Also: Kobe on their potential 1-1 match in the summer:
“Him challenging me to a 1-on-1 game, he’s confident or crazy, one or the other,” Bryant said …. “He said he needed to get his money up a little bit and he was going to play me,” Bryant said, “but he doesn’t want that problem.”
More Kobe:
I’m the best trash talker alive,” Bryant bragged. “He tried to keep up. Hopefully, you’ll see a little more of that from that generation, guys competing against each other. It was like that when I came into the league with Charles [Barkley] and Michael [Jordan] and [John] Stockton and [Clyde] Drexler and all those guys. That’s how it was.
“I enjoyed it. It’s fun. It kind of keeps you young and keeps things competitive. I think the bantering back and forth is kind of a lot art.
“Trash talking is a lost art, especially with this generation of players. Everybody grows up around everybody, so nobody wants to trash talk each other and I’m kind of from the old school. I was happy so see Kyrie get into it a little.”
Bryant also was impressed with Irving’s confidence — as well as his game.
“A lot of kids grow up not really believing in themselves, but he seems to believe in himself,” Bryant said. “Whether it comes from where he comes from or just his character or how he’s built or a combination of his work ethic, but he has that.
“He works extremely hard and I was really impressed with him this summer going up against our Olympic team in practice. He really came to play.”

i’m no fan of dunks, but deandre jordan does it fiercely. lebron does it well too

I can’t hate Kobe. Just can’t.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
First time I’ve really watched Irving play last night, he was the pretty much unstoppable. Not sure if it was because Duhon was trying to guard him or he is a superstar but Kyrie did whatever he wanted at all times. Cavs have a really nice young team with him and Varejao.

Remember Jeremy Lin?
December 12th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
So everyone’s blaming the coach of the Lakers instead of the players? Sweet. I’d blame Kobe and the rest of the players that don’t play defense.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
The Asian broad with that lezbo Pete?

Kobe is a man of teflon. I’m surprised he hasn’t received any criticism. I know he’s having a really good year, stat-wise, and well, he IS Kobe.
Lakers are now 15th in PPP defense. Middle of the pack.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
I don’t care who they blame as long as they continue to rip each other apart.
And I will reap all the benefits.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
who?
December 12th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Count me in.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
with this roster, they would have been better off keeping Mike Brown as the coach. The Princeton offense is more conducive with this lineup than the gimmick offense they’re running now. For one thing, it kept Gasol involved.

let’s see about post-rehab. lots of folks here would take kyrie over a pre-injury rose
December 12th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
It’s up to the coach to come up with a gameplan, which is why most good coaches practice both sides of the ball, and not just offense.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Everything I have read is that if they are in the lottery (1-14) then the Cavs pick trade is null. If the Lakers make the playoffs then the Cavs can swap one of the three picks they have with the Lakers picks (Sacramento and Heat).
If the Lakers pick is in the lottery it goes to Phoenix. No restrictions.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
I don’t see how the Princeton offense would have worked with Howard as it relies heavily on having all five guys being able to dribble, pass, and shoot.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
Most importantly, with Brown the Lakers played defense. Brown demanded it. It’s D’O (Defense Optional) with D’Antoni now.
It’s a 7 man team almost all on the downhill side of their careers. Those old guys are playing 40 minutes a night now and not winning. They don’t play defense. Their bench is probably in the bottom 5 in the league.
It’s a poorly set up team who is playing even worse than their talent.
How long until Kobe has a mysterious, lingering injury that turns into season ending surgery? I give it until late January. If things aren’t better, my guess is he will hang it up for the year.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Or not… Neither location is close enough to make it worth my while.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
you don’t say.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
You’re not buying the “Kobe’s chasing Kareem’s record” thing, huh?
December 12th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
They’ve gotten run off the floor by Dallas & OK, last 2 playoffs. Terrible with Mike Brown early this year. 3 coaches, same results.
It’s an even worse roster now – You just can’t win with 2 good players and a bunch of scrubs (Chris Duhon playing major minutes!)
December 12th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
I can just him saying, “That’s it. I’m done for the year until things change around here” if things stay bad.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
The Lakers were bottom of the league in defense those first 5 games.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Kobe? Quitting on his team?????? SHOCKER!
December 12th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Lakers need some Jason Maxiell.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
I have a theory on the Lakers and I think its that Dwight Howard, a guy who has fancied himself after Shaq his entire career, grew up idolizing the big man so much that he is still mad at how Kobe ended things with Shaq and has decided to end Kobe’s career in embarrassment.
/it’s the slow knife, the knife that takes its time, the knife that waits years without forgetting, then slips quietly between the bones.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
well done.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
It’s predicated on a big man who is able to dribble, pass and shoot. That man is Gasol. With the ball in Gasol’s hands, either he, Kobe, or Howard are being guarded one on one.
December 12th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
