ESPN Radio Hosts Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin Were Disciplined For Offensive Comments About Transgender Basketball Player
ESPN 980AM radio hosts Steve Czaban and Andy Pollin were disciplined in an undisclosed manner [Update: via D.C. Sports Bog they won't be on the air Tuesday and Wednesday], after causing offense with on-air remarks about transgender junior-college women’s basketball player Gabrielle Ludwig, the subject of this piece by Eric Prisbell for USA Today Sports. Ludwig, 50, had played college basketball 30 years ago as Robert Ludwig.
The two Washington-area hosts used a disrespectful tone, with Austin Powers jokes and giggling. The worst of the comments were about her appearance, describing her as “tattooed, big biceps” and resembling “a Russian chick,” (whatever that means?) and referring to as “he/she” and more offensively “it.” There’s no clear intent from Pollin “recommending” the article on air beyond setting it up for derisive jokes about “the gender-bender thing.” The hosts did issue an apology, which some found hollow.
The problem may not be so much active ill-will here, but ignorance. Forcing this discussion is one of the reasons Ludwig decided to play.
“If the example I can set for the kids who are transgenders in high school, for the people who hate transgender people and for those learning to deal with transgenders, transsexuals, if they see me as a normal person and we are not the bogeyman and love life and raise kids just like you,” Ludwig says, “maybe some of this mystery of who these people are will be taken away and there can be more blending into society. People are afraid of what they don’t know. I am willing to put myself out there. It was not like that before. It was just about playing basketball. It’s about more because I see an injustice.”
Enlightenment about gender roles may be distant, but not being mean should be a well-worn concept.
Update: Here is ESPN’s statement via Out Sports.
“The two are not employees of ESPN and made the comments on an affiliated radio station that controls its own local content. The offensive commentary goes completely against ESPN’s company culture and values. We have expressed our significant dissatisfaction to the station’s management.”

resembling “a Russian chick,” (whatever that means?)
Stab in the dark: comparing her to one of the Soviet bloc’s female athletes who were notorious for taking steroids to the point that the testosterone affected their physical appearance to appear more manly.
/but the joke should have been “East German chicks” to be correct

Czaban is the best. He is the funniest sports guy on the radio. What you should be doing is analyzing his comments on the murder/suicide and how the the NFL is much better off that he took a gun to his head. That was far more controversial than what he did here (and he’s right about the Belcher comments btw)

Yeah, it was obvious what he meant. I don’t think Anna Kournikova came to anyone’s mind during the descrtiption.

I think it’s odd that they lump them as the T in LGBT. They seem completely different.

Let’s ask Der Kaiser whether their comments were offensive.

Your tone is disrespectful and any apology you issue will be seen as hollow.

Dear God no – they used that description!!! How could they. Maybe this chick and Colin Kaepernick can hang out and discuss the rabid anti-tattooite society we live in.

Yeah

I didn’t get the joke right anyway.

I’m just curious how that individual has eligibility ? I guess men’s and women’s basketball are separate sports, technically.

Well, look at me pissing all over everything.

The best was the internet show back in the late 90′s-early 00′s. I think that was one of TK’s first ESPN suspensions.

I still laugh at that comment. That was without a doubt one of the five funniest comments ever. It’s right there with Miz’s fake email from Jason to the other writers.

“big biceps” and resembling a Georgia cheerleader
She’s like a car accident. You can’t not look.
December 11th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
That was a great show. Isnt that where the Linda Cohn and her 11 toes started. Replaced by Cowherd.

Yeah that was great. And poor old random old dude being terribly confused
December 11th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
The very best was when the internet feed would not go dead during commercials. That ended…poorly.
Nino, that’s where Old 12 Toes Cohn started. 12 the hard way. 7 and 5.
December 11th, 2012 at 3:48 PM
Damn it. I was looking forward to the shit show that was going to be Tiki’s live chat on Deadspin today.
Sorry folks, Tiki Barber won’t be joining us for a chat today. We really fumbled the whole situation.
December 11th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
What made it so hilarious was the context in which it was made.
December 11th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
I would imagine Tiki took one look at the question queue and developed internet connectivity problems.
December 11th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
You are correct sir.
Listening to the internet feed during the commercials was the best part. He cursed somebody out during one of those commercial breaks, cant remember who, that ended the feed.
/here comes Tony’s mailbag!
December 11th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
He literally shit on us!
December 11th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
I used to listen to these guys in the car, they’re okay. Using your fairly large media platform to mock someone that is showing what I think is quite a bit of courage is shitty.

Yeah, I need to see that again, but can’t find the post. My Google-fu is poor today.
December 11th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
The final downfall was due to a bit of racial slurring by someone, as I recall, although there was a complete teardown of an emailer. It also gave birth to the legendary Rich Eisen telling of the Bea Arthur joke.
December 11th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
It’s a good thing youse guys are around to prop me up.

Winner.
December 11th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
The internet show was X-rated and the best. Then the producer (?) said something about an emailers race (I think), some studio folks chimed in along those lines. The producer (?) was fired, TK defended him and was suspended, or “on vacation” as the meme developed.

I only vaguely remember this. is there a link to it anywhere or is it lost forever?
December 11th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
Or they were trying to be funny. Basically, if there is no outrage over people making fun of you, you are doing well. See Trump, Donald. If there is outrage over people making fun of you, it means society views you as pathetic. The PC outrage is so condescending
December 11th, 2012 at 4:33 PM

Agreed. Tranny jokes are hilarious.

It was in a post at TVF last year. Miz or Sparty could probably link you if you head over that way
