John Skipper: ESPN “Didn’t Handle (Tebow) Very Well”
ESPN President John Skipper acknowledged problems with the network’s wall-to-wall coverage of the Jets’ second third-string quarterback, claiming the WWL “didn’t handle (Tebow) very well.” Skipper became irritated after Doug Gottlieb’s “can’t talk enough Tebow” statement.
“The quote that I hated was from Doug Gottlieb. … I didn’t love that. I want people to think about what works for the next 10 minutes might not be the best thing for us for three years. That one hit home with me.”
Skipper claims he is trying to get ESPN producers to deploy some long-term perspective, instead of just hitting the Tebow button like trained lab rats to get better ratings.
“We’ve had some good discussions internally about trying to be careful. In some ways, the more difficult internal conflict is between long-term story telling and ratings. We all know that if you focus on the Tebow story, for the next 10 minutes you’re going to do better. But the question is trying to take a long-term perspective and saying, ‘Guys, let’s not get over excited about one story and hyping it.’”
One could claim ESPN’s quality control element has scored a victory over the “embrace debate” cabal here, though does Skipper come out with this comment if Tebow had not been milked dry? He is behind Greg McElroy in the pecking order. He has already been supplanted by the next media darling backup quarterback who can discuss his faith. He is whatever the opposite of now is.
With five weeks of hyping Notre Dame in the BCS Title Game left, is there any need to distort reality to troll for ratings?

Could take out “Tebow” and put in “anything to do about sports.”
December 10th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
Tebow was listed as the second-string qb yesterday while McElroy was inactive. But ok.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
poor choice of words…they handled him too much. surprised they arent blind.

What’s stunning to me is that a media organization even has to stop and “have conversations” about this.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
i agree with wallace.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
Media organization very different than journalism organization
Anyway…Notre dame to put players names on backs of jerseys for ncg

It shouldn’t be but that’s why I chose the word that I did.

John Skipper: Craig James didn’t HAVE to kill those hookers.

How dare anyone exploit Tebow coverage!
December 10th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
Beat me to it.

Tee-hee.
“Jacksonville, here I come!” No, not Jacksonville, Arkansas.

Oh, that’s rich.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:22 PM
By the way, congrats to Manziel and all, but Bo Jackson stole the show the other night.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Come now. The only reason reason Monk went alone to the Jets preseason camp to join in the Tebow hype is that he at the time didn’t have two unpaid interns he could force to accompany him.

If you’re talking about the 30 for 30 episode, yeah that was tremendous.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Indeed.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:32 PM
To be honest I thought it was so so at best
December 10th, 2012 at 4:33 PM
Skipper’s missing the point that his network ginned up the Tebow coverage (and Peyton Manning at minicamp) to avoid reporting on the Olympics. In other words, they created their own news, and now like Frankenstein’s monster, it’s choking them.

I’m a bit biased. But I do know it was 10000x better than Roll Tide/War Eagle.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
I love Bo so much, but I thought it was almost completely the same as that Nike Bo Knows Bo video I had back in the day….but that was much better since there were no annoying ESPN anchors or gimmicky cartoon editing

I’ll never forget that Spiderman climb off the outfield wall. Harold Reynolds getting thrown out at home plate on a laser-like throw was the other one.

Breaking the bats multiple times, so awesome
December 10th, 2012 at 4:43 PM
Seems a little overboard, to me.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
Not to mention: quinoa whiskey>
December 10th, 2012 at 4:45 PM
What is Tannakin, you ask? It’s a whiskey barrel-aged bacon mocha stout. Yeah, you heard me. Concocted using Bongo Java coffee beans, Corsair Quinoa Whiskey barrels, and house-made bacon from the Porter Road Butcher, this baby combines ingredients from Nashville’s tasty side.
Seems a little overboard, to me.
Agreed. But that’s the story of America: whatever is worth doing is worth doing with the volume turned up to 11.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:45 PM
I agree with this. I didn’t need to see Greenberg or the cartoon crap, but I thought the coach interviews and Bo making arrows really added to the whole deal.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
I got to shake Bo’s hand twice when I was at Auburn. That dude is not small.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:46 PM
Also wtf with the end of the Bo 30 for 30, I dvr’ed it and no ending.

Greenburg and Schaap were awful

Greenburg and Schaap were awful
I miss Dick Schaap.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:52 PM
Dick Schaap was a true legend. I’ve never liked Jeremy and always think of that interview where Knight was talking down to him.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:52 PM
Jeremy Schaap is insufferable
December 10th, 2012 at 4:53 PM
I think of the Bobby Fischer run-in
December 10th, 2012 at 4:53 PM
He’s got a long way to go to be as good as his Dad. He better keep that in mind.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:54 PM
Yea was just thinking that too. He had a hard on for Fischer, who was a true piece of shit though.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:56 PM
The Heisman ceremony ran long before it.
The end was Bo making arrows & shooting his bow, talking about all he wants on his gravestone is “Here lies a ballplayer who gave as much as he received.” The End.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:59 PM
Would have liked to have seen some Frank Thomas interviews as well for good measure
December 10th, 2012 at 5:01 PM
Yup. Opinions of Fischer aside, the pompousness of Schaap’s questioning and narration in that piece was despicable for a “journalist”
December 10th, 2012 at 5:03 PM
Speaking of despicable “journalists”, Mark Schwartz comes on ESPN in the background moments later. ESPN! Where you can be a horrific reporter and have a job, as long as you aren’t involved in a scandal that has nothing to do with your career whatsoever!!!
December 10th, 2012 at 5:16 PM
People have such a stick up their asses about ESPN, it becomes comical. There was nothing wrong with the cartoons in the show, because it spoke to the near mythical level of some of his exploits being attested to by those who witnessed them. This was set up beautifully by Klosterman’s statements in the beginning about Bo being the last pre information age hero. Fucking Mike Greenberg was working as a reporter in Chicago during the time Bo played for the Sox, so it wasn’t like he wasn’t a witness to a portion of the Bo Jackson story.

Does anyone like him (aside from the execs he shills for)? He brings absolutely nothing to the table, other than company man-ness

at least one guy on this site does. julio lincoln iglesias or something like that.
December 10th, 2012 at 5:36 PM
Anyone who works for any network, right down to your local access channel is a company man. He’s alright with me. He does what he does well and doesn’t take himself seriously. I’ll take that over the obnoxious being disguised as funny or “real” schtick anytime, especially in the morning.
December 10th, 2012 at 5:59 PM
Hey ESPN. Does everything you do have to be centered around ratings?
December 10th, 2012 at 6:24 PM
Mike and Mike is a horrific show. Morning sports radio is an abyss though, which I suppose is why it’s had legs
