One other thing about that game, Memphis doesn’t have true shutdown defenders in the paint. Gasol will get a block every once in a while, but Randolph can get used down low.

To me, that’s where a useful, determined Thabeet coulda been a help off the bench. A poor man’s Mutumbo would make the Grizz even more formidable.

I wasn’t crowning their asses but did feel they would be a slight favorite in the West. I was obviously wrong. Shouldn’t a team with Howard, Gasol, Peace and Kobe on the floor be at least adequate defensively? The damn hoopdata.com stats I look at are a week old now (update, please!), but at that time they were 8th in defensive efficiency.

they fired the coach who was good at coaching defense, and brought in the coach with the gimmick offense who isn’t good at coaching defense. People crack on the Knicks because of the age of some of their players, yet at the same time fall for the idea that the good fortunes of the Lakers’ season hinges on a 40 year old point guard. The far and away best thing about the Lakers is that anyone who was paying attention was saying when the trades were made that they would be fucking horrendous on defense, but that sure as hell didn’t stop the rest of the people from crowning their asses.
