Michael Lombardi Could Become GM in Cleveland, and Bring Nick Saban With Him
Michael Lombardi, the NFL Network commentator, is rumored to be a candidate for GM in Cleveland, according to Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe. Tom Heckert is the current GM in Cleveland, hired by Mike Holmgren in 2010. However, with new ownership buying the team, Joe Banner coming in as president, and Holmgren leaving, change could be in the works.
And if Lombardi is chosen, well, according to Bedard, it could be to get Nick Saban to return to the NFL:
According to the NFL sources, Saban has let it be known that if he returns to the NFL — where he flopped, going 15-17 with the Dolphins from 2005-06 — it would likely be with Lombardi playing Pioli to his Belichick.
One of Saban’s many missteps in Miami — the first being that he accepted a job he really didn’t want — was hiring a general manager in Randy Mueller who did not know the Belichick personnel system. Mueller, who was a good personnel man when running his own ship with the Saints, had to learn Saban’s system on the fly, and it never really clicked.
Lombardi has strong ties to Belichick and Pioli, and was with them–and Saban–in Cleveland in the early 1990′s. If Lombardi does not deliver Saban, then the next choice could be Josh McDaniels. You might recall that Lombardi said that Josh McDaniels would be his first choice as a head coach last season, when the Chiefs were searching for a new coach after firing Todd Haley.

I have a better scenario … Nick Saban will replace Mack Brown at UT in 2013.

this sounds like bullshit as planted by Lombardi. There is just no reason for Nick Saban to leave Alabama.
The part of the article that I found the most interesting (and most depressing) is that the Patriots might dump Wes Welker and make a serious, cash money run at free agent to be Percy Harvin.
Of course, it too was bullshit, since Harvin is still under contract for one more season with Minnesota.

Is Cleveland ownership really moronic enough to even consider Lombardi? Really?

I have a hard time believing that Saban would leave Alabama for friggin Cleveland no matter who the GM is. If we’re going this road though, might as well say “TEBOW TO CLEVELAND???” since McDaniels would be in play for HC.
Vikings have plenty of money to throw his way too. He’s not going anywhere.

Boom. Lombardi is interviewed once a week on a local show as I drive in to work. All he does is basically campaign to get a GM job. He is awful.

according to that article, he’s a total diva and the Vikings are sick of him.
I’m pretty sure that’s just rosterbation fodder for people who read the boston globe. The guy probably has to write shit like that every week to keep his job.

Agree. The Vikings have a storied tradition of making the right personnel decisions.

Lombardi should only be hired if he agrees to only wear those Cosby sweaters he was wearing in the Cleveland ’95 NFL Life show.
I doubt Lombardi gets hired by anyone because of his clear desperation to get a GM job. Guy practically begs for a job every time I hear him talk.

Agreed that Mike Lynn sucks.

Not Bedard. He’s a very good NFL writer, regardless of your thoughts on Boston/Boston media/Boston teams. He’s not Shaughnessy.

The Lomardi to CLE as puppet GM under Banner has been out there for over a month and has been reported by a # of outlets, including several CLE outlets, CBS (LaConfara) and Pro Football Weekly (Arkush). LaConfara on CLE radio this week said Saban and McDaniels were the two coaching targets if Shurmur is terminated.
The Lombardi hire of GM would be a mistake of colossal proportions. He has been a failure at analyzing NFL potential, although he has a good memory of data/metrics.
This would completely destroy all the momentum built and be a huge steaming dump by the Haslam ownership. FUCK.

Also, Saban is on record a few places expressing being tired of the college game. I realize another leap to the pro circuit wouldn’t make the most sense but there are a few tea leaves out there to at least give it context.

Tony Grossi tweeted that NFL league sources say the Lombardi is sketchy.

Lombardi as GM, Saban and HC and Schwartz as DC!
