James Shields and Wade Davis Traded to Kansas City; Wil Myers to Tampa Bay
James Shields has been traded to the Kansas City Royals in a deal that includes 2012 Baseball America Minor League Player of the Year Wil Myers, according to Ken Rosenthal. In addition to Shields, the Royals will get Wade Davis, who pitched really well out of the bullpen last season, after starting for Tampa the previous two years.
Rosenthal’s tweet said that the Rays will get Myers and “other prospects”. We’ll soon find out just how many. I already wrote about my thoughts about these trade rumors a few days ago, so now I will go away.
[UPDATE: The Royals have also traded two pitching prospects, Jake Odorizzi and Mike Montgomery, as well as 3B Patrick Leonard].

Now on his 3rd organization, after coming over from Milwaukee for Grienke, I think.

Asst. GMs around MLB must be licking their chops. I imagine they’ll be interviewing for an opening in KC in about ten months.

Amazing return for Tampa Bay. Got three of the top five prospects from KC. I’m a big fan of Myers. The kid can rake.

what’s the chain of command in kc? if it’s such a shitty trade, couldn;t someone like an owner have said ‘ho ho hold on a damn minute’?

KC is desperate to win. It looks like a dumb trade but who knows.

the shine is definitely off montgomery, but odorizzi put up good numbers in the PCL. good hr numbers, and for a young pitcher, good BB numbers (2.7/9IP)
Leonard i’ve never heard of, but is a year behind his draft class and was a power bat in rookie ball. he’s gonna be r5d-eligible long before he’s major league ready though, so he’s a long way away… Leonard and montgomery are question marks, but i’m not huge on shields the way some are, and i don’t really like Davis at all as a starter (which i assume he will be in KC) so it seems like a tough price to pay for two years of Shields and a 6th SP.
I’m not sure why the Royals felt they were in “win now” mode, except that maybe they are in “well we can’t suck forever” mode.
tbr on the other hand now has a starter in his first option year, to hang onto till they feel like promoting him.

Fans in KC took out in the paper asking the owner to sell the team so he probably agreed to this

Really hope they give Myers a full/most of a year in the IL. He could stand to cut down on strikeouts, and get used to playing in real ballparks.

Wow, just read Lisk’s thoughts for the first time. I’m pretty sure he was breaking keys off the keyboard as he typed this.

I’m all for not overvaluing prospects. I would view Myers median expectation as a right field version of Paul Konerko. Maybe he’s better than that, maybe he’s worse. But I’m not trading a 22 year old Paul Konerko with club control and cheap for 2 years of a #2 starter.
Dayton Moore has done decently at the scouting thing at the high school level. He has zero concept of value and constructing a major league roster. I mean, he could have not traded for Santana and not tendered Hochevar and been in the market for any pitcher non-Greinke division. We could go back over the years and if we eliminate all the dumb moves, the Royals could have been in the running for some really good players. Death by a thousand knives here.

Given team needs and his salary as time goes on, that would make sense. I’ve given up on trying to make sense of the Royals. I’m sure they think they just got their 7th inning guy and are ecstatic enough to give up multiple prospects.

The royals used to say bye-bye after their prospects became MLB stars. They’re just starting earlier now

I still think butler will be moved to pitt

And here I thought the Royals finally got it with their recent drafting success and some of their moves. Then they go and do something like this. Same old Royals.

This is such a dumb trade IMO.
Royals got rid of two prospects that COULD have gotten them more in return had they left them to “mature”. We all know they wouldn’t be able to keep them later on, but damn these were good players. For what? 2 good pitchers that will help them NOW. NOW isn’t enough though. They need more to be a legit contender and neither Shields or Wade will get them there.
