Andre Dawson Doesn’t Think Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa or Roger Clemens Deserve Hall of Fame Induction
The 2013 Baseball Writers’ Association of America Hall of Fame ballot was announced late last month and this year the candidates include Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa. The BBWAA voters have until the end of this month to return their completed ballots. Results will be announced on January 9.
The issue of performance enhancing drugs has taken the spotlight this voting cycle and figures to factor in to who will get inducted into Cooperstown this summer. Hall of Famer Andre Dawson doesn’t believe that any players who used steroids -Â including Bonds, Clemens or Sosa should be inducted. Dawson, who is now an assistant with the Marlins, was voted into the Hall of Fame in 2010 and thinks that players who have broken the rules of baseball should not be allowed into baseball’s most prestigious club.
“One of the criteria is integrity of the game and I think that was broken,” Dawson said. “There are probably individuals in the Hall of Fame who haven’t abided by all of the rules but this is something that was detrimental to the history of the game and that’s the problem I have.”
The most recent Hall of Fame inductee, Barry Larkin, agrees with Dawson in that players who used PEDs cheated and should not be allowed into the Hall of Fame.
“I think if you cheated, no, you don’t deserve it because I know how difficult it was for me to get there and how difficult it was for me just to compete on an everyday basis,” Larkin said. ”I think if you cheated I think you made a decision and I don’t think you belong.’
Dawson did admit that he thinks Bonds will be voted into the Hall of Fame eventually, but not this year. He isn’t sure that Clemens and Sosa will ever be voted in. Dawson cites Mark McGwire’s dwindling support in the Hall of Fame voting as evidence that the BBWAA voters don’t think PED users have a right to be in the Hall of Fame. McGwire first appeared on the ballot in 2006 and has never gotten more than 24 percent of the vote. He dropped to 19 percent last year.
“Bonds probably will eventually,” Dawson said. “I think there are lot of writers where somewhere along the lines they will switch gears and he will get in, but these other two guys (Clemens and Sosa), I don’t see it.”
Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda also thinks players who “didn’t do it the right way” should be left out.

Disagree on bonds unless we invoke integrity. Still…if rose aint in these mopes shouldn’t be either. A-rod won’t pass the integrity standard either

Michael Young to the Phillies for pitchers.

It will be a shame if Biggio and Bagwell don’t go in together this year.
December 8th, 2012 at 5:04 PM
Rodney I think Biggio pulls in Bagwell. There is not the same level of suspicion over Biggio’s career, and they are do closely associated with one another it will help both of them.

The Hawk…still a favorite.
/Team Vote Dale Murphy In

Dale Murphy – yes.
/not Mormon

In fairness, I’m sure Bonds doesn’t think Dawson belongs in the HOF, either.

Dale Murphy – yes.
You alright.

If the best players of a generation are out because they cheated, do the best players who didn’t cheat get in? Will Clark for HOF!

If the best players of a generation are out because they cheated
I like where you’re going with this. Kick Ty Cobb out of the HOF
December 8th, 2012 at 5:44 PM
As a Bagwell fanboy I sincerely hope he gets in sooner than later.
I like Posnanski’s idea of a Steroid Era Committee 10+ years from now so that time period can be looked at a little more clearly. It would help separate the Palmeiros and Sheffields from the Bonds and Clemens..es.

I’m tired of this argument. If the numbers are there, they belong in. The same writers that are keeping them out are the same writers that had their head in the sand about steroids to begin with. These writers are playing judge and jury when nobody knows if they were the exception or the rule in regards to who was a user. I’m also amazed that the players from the 60′s,70′s, and 80′s say anything in regards to “cheating” when god knows how many of them were on greenies or coked up. I don’t even want to hear about “integrity” when it comes to the Baseball Hall of Fame when a person like Ty Cobb is a member. I guess it’s alright to be a known racist but if you stick a needle in your ass, all bets are off.
December 8th, 2012 at 5:49 PM
That’s interesting to me that you include Sheffield in the lower tier of steroid user, weeze. I always think of him as right there with Bonds as a guy that would have been HOF-caliber anyway but took stuff to prolong his career and ended up smelling like taint.
December 8th, 2012 at 5:54 PM
If you want to use the Ty Cobb angle you might want go with the fact that he sharpened his spikes to scare fielders from trying to tag him out. He may have been a horrible person but that didn’t improve his ability to play the game, as steroids probably did for users of them.
December 8th, 2012 at 5:55 PM
Ou812…how do you explain rose not being in then?
December 8th, 2012 at 6:01 PM
Rose isn’t in because he broke the one rule that is on the books that has as a consequence that you are kicked out of the game and ineligible for the Hall of Fame. And then he lied multiple times about breaking that one rule despite all evidence that he had. Kind of a different story from Cobb and steroids users.
December 8th, 2012 at 6:03 PM

Sharpening his spikes to keep from getting tagged out didn’t help him steal all those bases?
December 8th, 2012 at 6:05 PM
Yes stark it does. That’s why I said he should go with that angle instead of “Ty Cobb was a bad person”.
December 8th, 2012 at 6:07 PM
Sharpening his spikes
Oooh! Charlie Muuurphaaay! Look whatchu did to ma leeegs!

Ah, I get what you’re saying but you garbled that point a little bit. No rule in baseball says you can’t murder a guy, am I right? At least there’s no rule against it when you’re away from the field.
December 8th, 2012 at 6:13 PM
Fuck Bagwell. Roided out freak.
December 8th, 2012 at 6:13 PM
That’s a little different from being shitty towards certain races. You can honor a player’s achievements on the field while not endorsing their personal choices.
I’m pro-Rose in the Hall just for the record.
December 8th, 2012 at 6:14 PM
F-off unless you have evidence, scripty.
December 8th, 2012 at 7:09 PM
An actual HoF post? Of course it’s on the weekend.
And Andre Dawson is a marginal HoFer, just like Jim Rice is. Considering they’ll probably vote in Mr. 3.90 career ERA this year, they rather put shitty players in rather than all times greats.
Yes to Bonds, Clemens, Piazza, Biggio, Bagwell, Raines, Trammel, Schilling, McGwire and Lofton.
December 8th, 2012 at 7:22 PM
And Andre Dawson is a marginal HoFer,
YOU BITE YOUR FUCKING TONGUE, SIR!!!!

No I won’t. And believe me, I will raise holy war if/when Morris gets elected
December 8th, 2012 at 8:25 PM
Lol…michael young to the phillies. Does amaro know what he is doing?
December 8th, 2012 at 8:34 PM
Phillies are only paying $6 million. If he is able to bounce back and provide even 1 WAR, it’s fine. It’ll help us as our 3B prospect isn’t ready yet. Amaro realizes he needs cost controlled players, hence the Revere deal. I think he’s gonna make a move for Swisher.

rose’s cheating had zip to do with his performance on the field, which is what’s most important regarding integrity. to me he cheated, they cheated. if he’s not in, they shouldn;t be. and their cheating was worse, no matter what’s on the books
December 8th, 2012 at 9:09 PM
Read further vez. I’m pro Rose in the hall, but those who say he shouldn’t be in have a very powerful argument.
December 8th, 2012 at 9:11 PM
i saw that ms. but really, no one has a great argument if they;re arguing with me
