What Might Next December’s College Football Coaching Carousel Look Like? [UPDATE]
In July, we took a look at five coaches on the proverbial “hot seat” heading into the 2012 season. Three ended up getting fired. When the list was re-adjusted in October, Oregon State’s Mike Riley had coached his way out of trouble, and he was replaced by Joker Phillips of Kentucky, who has since been fired.
With this year’s coaching carousel finally slowing down – the best open jobs right now at Wisconsin, Colorado and Cincinnati – let’s look ahead 12 months to next December. What schools could be looking to hire a new coach?
Texas. Mack Brown’s struggles have been chronicled here. A lot will be depend on which players (especially on that terrible defense) declare for the NFL or return to Austin. Brown will be 62 next August, and as the success of Johnny Manziel (and RGIII in the pros) blossoms, Brown will continue to be mocked for wanting to recruit them as defensive backs.
Florida State. Jimbo Fisher. Three underwhelming seasons so far when you consider the talent, preseason expectations, and conference. The 2013 schedule doesn’t feature any difficult out-of-conference opponents besides rival Florida. He lost defensive coordinator Mark Stoops to Kentucky. I don’t think Fisher goes into the season on the hot seat, but I think given the program’s history, pressure will be turned up on Fisher if he scuffles again vs. inferior teams.
Missouri. Gary Pinkel’s been with the Tigers for 12 years, and finishing under .500 (5-7) in his first year in the SEC (while Texas A&M thrived) wasn’t a good look. A string of seven straight bowl games has been snapped. I do think Pinkel will open the season on the hot seat, and if he doesn’t win, he’ll be gone. What might make Missouri’s decision easier – the number of very, very good up-and-coming coaches (like Hugh Freeze [UPDATE: Dammit to hell! Don't you hate it when you're looking at two lists at the same time and write the wrong bloody name? MIKE MACINTYRE is the name I was thinking about. We regret the error.]), who would love to jump into the SEC.

Cool.
December 7th, 2012 at 2:51 PM
Chris Peterson to Oregon, also.
December 7th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Thought we were still calling him Jumbo?
December 7th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Pretty sure Ole Miss is currently in the SEC
December 7th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Mack is going to kill himself when he finds out the site that thinks being the second rated recruit in the country at your position means you were looked over by scouts, aint no coming back from that kind of recruiting savvy.
December 7th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Brady Hoke can’t protect his recruits.
December 7th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
I’d guess this happens far more often in the recruiting process than you think it does.
December 7th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Man I left out a big part of that statement. Boffo, even.
December 7th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
Conflicting reports whether he’s coming to Madison Monday for an interview…that would be something, could at least expect better gameday preperation than the previous administration
December 7th, 2012 at 2:58 PM
He must want a pay raise at Potato U.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
Will Muschamp to Tixis.
Steve Addazzio to Florida.
Brent Venables to Georgia.
Mark Richt to Middle Tennessee State.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:00 PM
I was told Venables was going to UGA. Maybe next year.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:01 PM
Wait so a bunch of schools offered Manziel scholarships as a DB, so that makes Mack an idiot?
December 7th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Are you implying that it is incolorbent upon a sports blogger to know these types of things?
December 7th, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Missouri seems like the only one of these that has a realistic chance of an opening next year. I certainly hope Mack is back in 2014 and beyond.

If Pinkel is gone after next season, I could see Mizzou going the Willie Taggart/Mark Hudspeth route, which might not be a bad thing at all.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:06 PM
Wait so a bunch of schools offered Manziel scholarships as a DB, so that makes Mack an idiot?
No, it makes him a clown. He also didn’t recruit RGIII as a QB. Where have you been?

We have confirmation. Somebody needs to post this breaking news!
December 7th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Seriously, what are the chances of Saban ending up at Texas if Mack is gone after next season?
December 7th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
YOU ARE A BUSINESS PRO!!!!!
December 7th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
This is too good to be true.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:11 PM
0%. they’ll go HARD after Muschamp.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Mark Richt to Middle Tennessee State.
Fantastic.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
So why the fuck are you talking about him in this post?
That was the last sentence before your list. I am so confused.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
And I can assure you that some of that mocking includes the very offensive Upside Down Hook-Em Horns
Why isn’t Lane Kiffin at USC on the list? He has wasted more talent than Mack Brown at TexASS.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
“I will not be the head coach at Alabama.”
100%.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
Agree with the first part, but, due to scholarship limitations, not the second.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:19 PM
Didn’t Muschamp burn his bridges by leaving his heir-apparent position in Austin?
December 7th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
West Virginia University has ordered its musket-toting mascot to stop using his university-issued weapon on hunting trips after an online video showed him killing a black bear.
Pussies.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:22 PM
WVU probably couldn’t have beaten Maine the second half of this season.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:23 PM
Chris Peterson to Miss State?
December 7th, 2012 at 3:27 PM
Chris Peterson to Miss State?
Who would ever report such a crazy thing.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:29 PM
I thought Mack Brown not retiring when he said he would led to that. It’s 2 years later and Mack’s still there.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:30 PM
I’d put money on Kiffen being fired next season.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Kiffen should easily be #1 on this list
December 7th, 2012 at 3:37 PM
Black bear > black powder
December 7th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
Tennessee’s Daniel Boone mascot got in a lot of trouble back in the day because there was a brawl in the Tennessee-LSU basketball game and he was pointing it at Shaq and recoiling it pretending he was shooting him.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Incredible.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
I love not working on Fridays. I could really get used to this stay at home dad stuff.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
There’s a guy known as Lane Kiffin, you may not have heard of him?
December 7th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Some ass clown.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Hey guys was Lane Kiffen in this post? Because if not I’ve been told that he should have been.
December 7th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
BLAST.
see update.
Son of a biscuit!
December 7th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Goes to show how disliked he is, and how surprising it was that the venerable Pat Haden would tie his future to such a clown
December 7th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
To keep things rolling
December 7th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Using I and We in the same sentence, I like your style
December 7th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
You’re the only one in that example who actually used I and We in the same sentence (I guess now I have as well).
December 7th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Didn’t FSU win their conference this year?
December 7th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
Didn’t FSU win their conference this year?
Yes, and they were better this year than last year, and better last year than the year before, and their recruiting base is back to 90s levels, but they did NOT go undefeated this year and thus: Hot Seat
December 7th, 2012 at 4:12 PM
Glad I wasn’t the only one thinking this.
December 7th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
Yeah the FSU/Jimbo anti-boner TBL has is another in his long line of baffling stances. They went 10-2 and are playing in the (whatever) BCS bowl. They will most likely win the ACC again next year. Although I guess on the off chance they go like 7-5 and fire Fisher TBL will look like a genius.
December 7th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
fair argument. in “defense” of him not being here:
a) AD loves him, gave him resounding vote of approval.
b) team returns arguably best player in the country, team should be improved
c) won’t go into the season with top 3 expectations. so 9/10 wins will do the trick.
December 7th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
As a Miami fan, Jimbo scares me. Everything about him reminds me of Bobby Bowden. Is he the only coach-in-waiting to ever come close to delivering the goods?
December 7th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
Are there any other coaches-in-waiting who actually took that job? James Franklin and Muschamp are the only other ones I can think of off the top of my head who ever held that title, and they have delivered so far at their new schools.
December 7th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Wide left?
Wide right?
December 7th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Wide left?
Wide right?
Didn’t FSU’s kicking game suck this year? Well, I like that part.
December 7th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
I’d argue Haden is a very cerebral, dispassionate guy, who figured he’d give Kiffin another year in the names of continuity and recruiting. I don’t buy that he loves Kiffin at all, and that his resounding vote of approval was the only way to go if he was going to retain Kiffin. He isn’t going to come out and say “Kiffin’s ok, I’ll give him one more try”. Kiffin’s arrogance is just too antithetical to Haden for me to believe anything he’s feeding the media
December 7th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
I hear Ole Miss hired some guy named Freeze.
December 7th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Redemption
December 7th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
I have to agree with this. Even if you are privately displeased and even if you tell that to Kiffin in person, the smart move is to put on a public face of support.
However, my money will be on Kiffin not coloring back for 2014.
December 7th, 2012 at 5:00 PM
I think Jimbo gets a pass for next year, expectations will be tempered with a lot of guys leaving (Werner, Rhodes, Manuel). However, he’d better stop dropping inexcusable games inside the ACC and at least keep pace with Florida if he wants to stay there long term.
December 7th, 2012 at 5:06 PM
That a soccer term?
December 7th, 2012 at 11:39 PM
Maybe GOL retires and ucf can get a real coach
December 11th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
favorite part of this pathetic jimbo fisher era is watching ‘cane, gator, bull, etc. fans sticking up for him. that’s when you know there’s a problem. fsu had a decade to prepare for this hiring, and could NOT have jumbled it worse. tallahasse has just gotten so soft. sad.
