The Lakers Saw Lincoln, and Kobe Isn’t Sure All of the Lakers Knew Who He Was or That He Was Assassinated [UPDATE]
The Lakers, perhaps taking a page out of Phil Jackson’s playbook, went to see “Lincoln.” Kobe Bryant had this to say:
Kobe on the team’s viewing of “Lincoln”: “I don’t know if the guys knew who he was … It came as a big shock to them when he was killed”
— Dave McMenamin (@mcten) December 7, 2012
Gosh, I hope Kobe breaks this down further after the Lakers get drilled by Oklahoma City tonight.
[UPDATE: Kobe was joking, folks.]
For those not adept in the art of sarcasm, Kobe was joking about his teammates not knowing who Lincoln is

I need to see video of this. He had to have been jokiing.
Right?
December 7th, 2012 at 12:55 PM
I assume he’s talking about the foreigners, no? I’d imagine most black guys would know about Lincoln if any president.
December 7th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Lincoln’s assassination in the third act is a relatively unknown story.
December 7th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
This would be awesome, if accurate.

“Ha! I told you stupid motherfuckers he didn’t kill himself in a bunker! Now pay me my motherfucking money. Yeah, I’m looking at you, Morris.”

Kobe on the team’s viewing of “Lincoln”: “I don’t know if the guys knew who he was … It came as a big shock to them when he was killed”
Dumb asses, all great Heist movies end with someone dying…
December 7th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
kobe has to be joking, right? no way african americans in the united states dont know who abe lincoln is, just no way.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
It’s a fantastic movie, minus the last five minutes or so when they tack on his assassination. Could’ve just had a blurb at the end before the credits and it would’ve been more powerful and less “E.T. Phone Home.” Tony Kushner is the absolute best.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
Dwight Howard went to some weirdo Christian high school, right? probably too busy being taught about the Earth being created in seven days to learn any American history.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Sounds like you have your pants around your ankles when you type this stuff. If we could ever pin down which team you like it might give you a little more credibility.
/no it wouldn’t
December 7th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
yes.
would have been a lot cooler if he WASN’T
December 7th, 2012 at 1:04 PM
The fact that you actually typed these words speaks volumes.

I was surprised more than once when I watched the historical porn Winkin: Mary Todd’s Anal Adventures.

I checked Paul Gasol’s twitter and got exactly what I expected. As someone said on twitter, he’s the NBA version of #normalguytweets.
@paugasol: We’ve watched “Lincoln”! Very good movie! It describes one of the most important moments in the history of the USA. Highly recommended!
December 7th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
Jason, appears you and Kobe have similar senses of humor. Surprised you don’t like him more.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:06 PM
So Jackson used to give them books to read; D’Antoni hands out movie passes?
December 7th, 2012 at 1:07 PM
I wanna see Lincoln, but…I majored in history in college, I wrote papers about the guy. Everyone knows the story and everyone I trust said it was boring. I wanna see like a condensed version or something.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
Has Kobe ever intentionally said or done anything funny? Unless his rap album was a ploy, I can’t think of a time ever.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:09 PM
LEO IS A PATIENT!!

He tweeted the same thing after watching The Avengers.

I have a history degree also. Am reading “Team of Rivals” right now, but will probably end up seeing the movie anyway.

Uh oh, I bet you were [omitted] of her dress when you read that.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Has Kobe ever intentionally said or done anything funny?
Impossible for him.

You’ll be able to see that they pull a lot of material from the book and incorporate it into the screenplay and character development. The Ethan Allen joke in the movie is, as I recall, drawn directly from an account in the book. Lincoln had a pretty good sense of humor.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Everytime he mentions Smush Parker I chuckle
December 7th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
He loves exclamation points, thus making him very annoying.

Old Kobe is pretty funny IMO. Young Kobe was not.

Here you go.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
i thought he was funny a few times last year.

I love Mr. McMenamin making fun of the ‘idiots’ who couldnt tell there was sarcasm in something he typed. This is why we speak of the sarcasm font.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:14 PM
To each his/her own, but I cannot possibly imagine having this reaction to the same movie I saw.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. That is all.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
Can we start a poll on whether 1) Jason thought Kobe was joking 2) thought Kobe was serious but wrote the post hedging so he could act like he knew all along, or 3) thought Kobe said ‘cum’
December 7th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
I retweeted this an hour before Gasol posted that, had to go back and make sure which was first considering how accurate it was.

Deadspin had the exact same post and update, lay off Jason, it’s just an all-bloggers kind of thing to do.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:20 PM
I am not so sure about this being a joke. Kobe also infamously answered a question about MLK’s assassin by saying, “I wish we knew.”
December 7th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
Part 3 was my point/joke, I didn’t really care about the post.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
WPM challenge over the in the Butch Jones thread. You’ve been called out.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
What kind of answer do you think we’d get if we asked them what they know about Franz Ferdinand?
December 7th, 2012 at 1:28 PM
Awesome.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:30 PM
They’re athletes..black or white I am in the boat that they probably had no idea who we was…probably thought it was a gritty, more realistic take on Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Update: Team thought the cummed people had it bad in the movie

I live in an area where 95% of the economy is dependent on Lincoln, SPRINGFIELD 217 WHUT!…I bet the movie kinda fibs about him.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
I bet the movie kinda fibs about him.
Agree. The course we know as “History” should probably be called “Dynamics” based on what I read in my kids text books.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
This would be so much better if he wasn’t joking.. SPOILER ALERT lol
December 7th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
God it’s such a waste that you don’t get paid.
December 7th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
All this reminds of those great ESPN commercials for MLB with Nicholas Turturro and Abe Lincoln driving around the country. They’re looking at something at one point, and Turturro mentions to Lincoln he needs it “like you need a hole in the head,” and Lincoln just gives Turturro THE LOOK.

Love Kobe. One of the few NBA players that is legitimately a smart guy. Not NBA smart, but normal human being smart
December 7th, 2012 at 6:52 PM
eh, i grade him down for that fiasco in colorado and marrying the psycho he did.
other than that, seems like he has it together.
