Josh Hamilton is Down to the Texas Rangers or … the Seattle Mariners?
Josh Hamilton, the most coveted hitter in baseball free agency, appears to have narrowed his choices to the Rangers – two World Series appearances in the last three years – and the … Mariners? The Seattle Times says:
I’m now told the talks between the two sides have been a lot more serious than anyone has let on and that they are actually “very close” to getting a deal done. The one thing holding the process up is the fact the Texas Rangers are also interested in hanging on to Hamilton and remain the most serious Mariners competitor on that front. But the Rangers also remain engaged in a two-pronged battle with the Dodgers for the services of starting pitcher Zack Greinke and would not be able to land both him and Hamilton.
The Mariners? Seattle hasn’t reached the postseason in a decade. It has finished above .500 once in the last four years (twice in the last eight). I’m sure if Hamilton heads to the Northwest, the Seattle/coffee/vision jokes will be flying. Wonder if the Mariners moving in the fences made Seattle attractive to Hamilton, or if it is simply a money thing.
Chase the World Series ring in Texas (maybe for slightly less money), or get your last big contract and get paid by a terrible franchise?

see, i would have gone with a joke about how he misunderstood that Washington legalized crack, not weed. But that’s just me.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Maybe he wants to go where weed is legal?
December 6th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
He should just get out of the AL West. Come to the Tribe!
December 6th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Help me understand this, because I’m not a huge basball fan: Why would the Rangers let one of the most prolific hitters in MLB get away, especially with 2 recent World Series appearances?
December 6th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
It’s a money thing. If the Rangers land Greinke and Upton they can’t afford Hamilton for what he’s asking for. I think Rangers are right to let him walk. He’s got maybe 2-3 good years left before he starts to decline. Any club offering him more than 4 year deal (or a 5 year deal with an option on the 5th year) is overpaying.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:14 AM
This morning I read that the Rangers and Phils were talking about a trade for Michael Young. Because the Phils didn’t look old and worn down enough last season, I guess.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:15 AM
Wherever Hamilton lands, I’m sure the fans will be falling out of the stands from joy.

He’s a headcase who is asking for a huge contract. He’s 31 and will be 32 two months into next season. Most power hitters start to lose bat speed around age 34-35…any deal he signs might be worth it to the team for the first two years, if he can stay healthy which is also not a guarantee in his case, but after that it’ll be a payroll albatross.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
Thanks, Peter King.
I would think heroin jokes would be more likely.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
Paraphrasing Dan Duquette, “We re-signed our scrapheap, reclamation project 31 year old LF and a rule 5 26 year old LHP. I am satisfied with what we accomplished at these meetings.”
/last year was fun, back to our .500 or lower ways next year
//Fuck you Angelos
December 6th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Cue the Red Sox swooping in at the last moment to give him $25mil/yr and continue to jack up the free-agent market worse than they already have.
Seriously, though. If you’re another MLB GM, you’ve got to be ill at what the Sox have doled out for money/years and how they’ve set the market. Victorino and Napoli are nowhere near 3 yr/$39 mil players, but that’s what the market dictates now!

Makes me a horrible person but LOL’d
December 6th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
Rumor around these parts yesterday was that the Phils were entertaining trading Lee for Ellsbury. Not sure why that makes sense for Philly (dumping payroll?), but as a Sox fan, the thought of Lee coming here gives me a little soft-throwing lefty in my pants.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
Seattle is far from a “horrible franchise”. The major league team has been below average, especially offensively, for awhile. But there is talent there, primarily on the mound.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
The guy who writes about baseball for the newspaper company that owns this website debunked this about 90 minutes ago.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
I wonder if JMac copy and pasted what he said about Oakland last year and applied it to Seattle? His going after them so hard almost guarantees they’ll have a good year this year. They actually ended the season pretty strongly. I hear Justin Upton coming to Texas with Holland and Martin Perez going the other way and then we sign Greinke. Profit.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Because only stupid front offices resign players in their 30s with declining skill sets to more than 3 year contracts.
And Lee is not going anywhere, period. Maybe after this year when the Phillies have more to address.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Safeco fences are being moved in next year, but I think the left field fences are being moved in a lot more than the ones in right field (something like 4 feet).
December 6th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
I hear they have the corner on the
AsianOriental market.December 6th, 2012 at 11:23 AM

I thought Hamilton was more interested in years/total value than average annual salary. More like 7/$150M as opposed to 5/$125
December 6th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
Someone correct me if I’m wrong here but wasn’t their biggest problem run support for Hernandez and guys like Vargas? They already brought in Bay who has zero risk and if he stays healthy could add at least something, there are rumors about them wanting Garrett Jones, and if they managed to add Hamilton they suddenly have the potential to score some runs when they were the worst scoring team in the AL and bottom five in the league in basically every hitting stat there is.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:24 AM
And if the Rangers are willing to pay $10 mil of the $16 mil that Michael Young is earning next year, it’s not a horrible deal for the Phillies. He can play 3B (not well) for the next year until Asche is ready. If he can put up positive fWAR next year, for $6 million, then it’s not a terrible move.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
SC would weep like a child if Clifton went to Boston
December 6th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
No way of telling how his substance abuse will affect his decline. Most baseball players peak at age 28-29, which would put Hamilton 2 years into his decline already. The team that can get him to sign a 3-4 year deal at $30M per instead of the long term deal will have won.
His agent will likely take the Boras route and wait until someone does what happened with Prince Fielder last winter. The most likely team to do that, based on money available and need, is the Phillies. They lost out on Upton, still don’t have a 3B and all their stars are in major decline. Time to make one last run.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
The Phillies do need a centerfielder and almost certainly need a top of the lineup guy better than JRoll at this point in JRoll’s career.
I don’t think giving up Lee for Ellsbury would be popular amongst the natives here.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Hamilton’s top three most similar players through age 31 are Bob Johnson, Brian Giles and Pedro Guerrero.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Who Young Jason here said was a “rising young star” (was 28 at the time) to open up center field for some kid named Andrew McCutchen.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
And there’ll be plenty of guys his own age to talk to in the clubhouse.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Don’t count the Brewers out either. They’re entertaining trading Corey Hart right now so they don’t have to pay him after this season. They can move Hart to pick up the pitching they need and sign Hamilton.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
I’d still watch him but yeah, that would be unfortunate. I’d rather he finish his career on a contender then on a team that is rebuilding. At least, I think that’s what the Red Sox are doing. Their recent transactions have me confused as to what exactly the plan is over there.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
Me too.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
They have a litany of problems. Like Justin Smoak not being very good and him being the centerpiece for the Cliff Lee deal. Or how they gave up Adam Jones for Erik Bedard five years ago. Jesus Montero’s year last season didn’t exactly light up the world. Dustin Ackley was really struggling at home. Franklin Gutierrez has been hampered by injuries in the last 2 years. Ichiro is gone, and well past him prime anyways.
There’s not a whole lot to build around in Seattle other than Felix right now. They need all those young kids to rebound in the worst way.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Spend money that they can, and maintain flexibility for the Bradley/Bogaerts/Barnes years (2015+)
Surprised nothing like this has been dropped yet…
December 6th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Like Justin Smoak not being very good
The Rangers look pretty smart for dumping him when they did.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
yankees may pay youk 12 million for a year
December 6th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
And they still finished 6 games ahead of the Red Sox. Ugh.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
I see what you’re saying SC in that the Phillies window is very limited, and they should make a push, however with the luxury tax cap, I don’t think Phillies ownership partners wants to surpass that.
My preferred route is trading for Dexter Fowler by trading Cloyd and some another B level prospect.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Thought that trade was a steal (young, somewhat proven starter for a question mark without a position) for the Yankees at the time, but let’s see if they didn’t sell high on Pineda. Anyone hear anything about his recovery?
December 6th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
Taijuan Walker, Zunino, Paxton, Hultzen and Franklin could all be up by the end of next season. That’s a good talent base to work from.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
Not trying to start an argument here but they spent half of what they saved in the July trade on a 31 year old with an injury history that has never played 1B full time, a 32 year old who is going to be a 4th OF on a good team in a year and a back-up at a position where they have tremendous depth already.
They can afford it, sure. I just don’t get signing multi-year deals for aging veterans when you’re trying to rebuild.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
I was going to suggest that Ackley reminded me of Pedro Alvarez, that he seemed rushed to me because of the crappy teams, and wonder if a bit more seasoning would have avoided bad habits.
/looks up stats
//Ackley got decent run in AAA and lit it up in 2011 including great plate discipline BB-K numbers, would have been hard to wait
///blame the PCL
December 6th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
They can afford it, sure. I just don’t get signing multi-year deals for aging veterans when you’re trying to rebuild.
This this this….Seattle signing Hamilton feels like the Astros signing Carlos Lee a few years ago. Rather than work on developing younger players we just piled another huge salary on the payroll and made the team’s roster top heavy with age. We’re now paying for years for doing things like that.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Yeah, they just seem like the perfect dark horse to land him like the Tigers were a year ago with Prince. I’d go with the Phillies or the Brewers (for reasons listed) on Hamilton.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
The M’s interest should be a sign that he is going to drop off significantly in the coming years.
References: Sexson, Richie; Figgins, Chone; Everett, Carl; Weaver, Jeff; Silva, Carlos; every free agent signed by Bill Bavasi; Bay, Jason (I’m merely assuming here)
December 6th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
The Red Sox still have no plan, Cherington is looking like a disaster.
I would not give Hamilton anything more than 3/$70, and that would be a stretch.
I’d take Seattle’s talent pool- including minors- over half the teams in baseball, easy.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
So… Rule 5 talk? Anybody? Hector Rondon made me happy after reading further into it. Another guy coming of TJ with a live arm. Hello bullpen.
Marlins got a steal with Lara too. Another “if he’s healthy” guy that throws gas. Plus he’s lefty. With their roster, they should have no problem keeping him at the MLB level all year.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Sounds like Brett Jackson. Could be Josh Vitters if you take out the discipline part.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
$136 mil committed to 11 players in 2013…gotta fill out that 25 under $175 mil. Signing Hamilton is not going to happen. Go cheap and get Fowler who is still cost controlled.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Dude, what? He was an Indian prospect last year.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Why do all the cubs top prospects always end up sucking?
December 6th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
SC – let me clarify, that’s their reasoning but I don’t fully understand/agree with it. I’m okay with overpaying to avoid committement, but 3-year deals aren’t a super value at that price. Especially Victorino. They really want good clubhouse guys.
That said, I’m down on Lavarnway. I’d rather them have keep Salty and Ross and trade him. Lavarnway is a streaky hitter, who has built his rep largely on one insane month at AAA, and hasn’t always maintained power/contact consistently. I’m not entirely sure his ceiling is much higher than where Salty is (was before he broke down). I think if you can spot him regularly and have a good backup who complements his splits, I like him fine in a good lineup.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Indians didn’t add him to their 40-man roster, so the cubs took him in the Rule 5 draft this morning.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
I can’t speak intelligently on the Rule 5 because I have no idea what Luhnow is going to do next. He just traded our best reliever from last year, Wilton Lopez, to the Rockies (after nearly trading him to the Phillies a week ago). I don’t know if anyone keeps track of most trades by a GM in his first year (or return on players) but Luhnow has got to be in the running.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Please for the love of God Greinke, sign somewhere other than Texas.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Cubs lost 3 guys in the Rule V, but considering who they were, and the fact they picked up Rondon, seems like it’ll be fine.
Brett Jackson and Josh Vitters…ugh. Just hope Baez is not on the same undisciplined path.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Starlin Castro doesn’t want to be included in this conversation. Rizzo has 30+ HR upside. And yes I’m aware Rizzo was a Red Sox & Padres prospect before that.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
I love that the Astros lost no one in the Rule 5 draft….we’re not even worth having our carcass picked at yet.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
I’m familiar with Trevor Bauer. What’s the deal with this Tyler Skaggs kid?
December 6th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
The explosion of Starlin/Starling as a name is really jarring.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Traded a luxury that a rebuilding team doesn’t need (and who has injury problems) for a guy who has the chance to be a dominant closer. Great trade for Astros.
I don’t know what the Rockies are doing. They’re terrible.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Fields was the obvious pick of the draft. He’ll stick. Sort of surprised Red Sox didn’t prioritize him over others. He’ll be a good fit for a team that can manage his spots like Houston. Pressly I know less on, but has an arm/potential. Red Sox just have too many RHP-RPs that needed and didn’t need roster spots. He could probably stick with MIN after a stint on the DL for ‘arm fatigue’. Know nothing about the guy the 2B that BOS picked for Det(?).
Anyone else from BOS perspective (if you’ve heard of Hazelbaker) had very little chance to stick, and they protected all their young catchers, with 6 on the 40-man currently, I believe.
/that’s it from the Red Sox perspective, anyone else?
December 6th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Then he better figure something out pretty quickly. He was horrible last season.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Skaggs has a great 12/6 curve, will be a #2 in the majors, acquired in the Haren deal. Great prospect, will be better than Bauer in my book.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Better prospect than Bauer.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
There was some criticism on the radio of just how penny-pinching the Astros have gotten due to them unloading Wilton Lopez basically because he does not make the minimum.
I like the direction the Astros are going in, but it’s going to take a while. Can’t wait to see how dismal attendance is this year.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Vitters and Jackson wish they had Baez’s bat speed. He’s definitely raw in his decision making, but adjustments can be made. His bat speed can hide it a bit too.
I don’t like Vitters chances to ever play in the Show full-time. Jackson? They re-tooled his swing in the AFL and hopefully they eliminate how long it is. He’s got the power, and the knowledge of the strikezone. His bat just takes too long to get through the zone. He’s also go the benefit of being a solid defensive outfielder. If he can cut that K rate from 46% to even 30%, he’s got a shot at being the Cubs every day CF by 2014-15.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
High contact speed guy. Needs to develop some patience though.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Oh Jose Bautista.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
psst – Chad with NFL writer at noon. He watches more film than everyone who writes and comments on this site, combined.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
apparently youk may be an indian too
December 6th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
He improved in the field which was mandatory. His bat swooned in June and July but at least his walk rate started to make strides as the season wound down. It was a down year, sure. But he wasn’t horrible.
I could have gone without him saying his contract weighed on him in June and July. A reason, yes, but not one I care to hear.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
Traded a luxury that a rebuilding team doesn’t need (and who has injury problems) for a guy who has the chance to be a dominant closer. Great trade for Astros.
Definitely. I didn’t mean to make it sound like I have a problem with the trade. In one year Luhnow has suffused our farm system with a ton of depth (though it still needs a lot of work) by maximizing value on players who were being paid far more than we needed to be paying anyone in our position. I have full and complete trust in what Luhnow is doing. I just want to make sure now that we don’t rush along any of our prospects–like Singleton, Crosart or Springer–and expose them too early. Ed Wade pushed Jordan Lyles along too fast and I worry that he might be another Mike Maroth: clearly has talent but didn’t get to use any of it on a team that was worth a damn.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:53 AM
sums it up nicely.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
Johann Santana just cried a little bit.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
I like the direction the Astros are going in, but it’s going to take a while. Can’t wait to see how dismal attendance is this year.
Houston is a shitty baseball town anyway, so attendance doesn’t bother me. As soon as they start winning again fans will return just like they did 1996-2000, when we were always in playoff contention (well maybe not so much 2000).
December 6th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
If it’s porn, I look forward to comparing notes with Yelnik.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Nice avatar SC.
Cubs also have Alomara and the Cuban OFer coming.
After having 30 years of Grace, Soto and Castro for home grown position players, they might have some coming.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
“What’s a walk rate”
/Boston SSs (Iglesias… though amusingly enough, Bogaerts had like 1 walk in 100 PAs at AA, while slugging .600)
December 6th, 2012 at 11:56 AM
Rondon had a good make-up. The catch might be him being ready/serviceable to make the Opening Day roster.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:58 AM
Will Middlebrooks quotes for $200, please.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Red Sox SS ranked 27th in league in walk rate. Awesome!
December 6th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
HtH I’m with except one thing. Middlebrooks, to me, has shown a surprising ability to adjust. I expected a slump from being rushed, but he worked his way out of them pretty well. I went from hating him being in the majors so early, to sort of buying his intelligence/work ethic as a hitter. He may improve as time goes on.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
In a division with a staff like Tampa’s, that guy is going to have some big time strikeout issues. He might see one good pitch to hit in a series. Might.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
I’m not giving up on his ability to walk, but after a decade or so of seeing disciplined strike zone judgment by the Red Sox, last year was jarring.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
BP has their top 10 prospects up but requires a subscription. John Sickels did the top 20 the other day. I was surprised at how high he was on the whole system. Never seen someone as high on Vogelbach as he is.
Really looking forward to watching Maples on MiLB.tv this year.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Salty, Ells, Middlebrooks, Iglesias, and really even Kalish… Sox may have 4/5 starters struggling to crack a 5% walk rate and three of those really may not get there.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
The Cubs new brass has done exactly what they were brought in to do- reinvigorate the system with high-ceiling talent. Will Baez, Almora, and Soler pan out? Who knows. But I love the direction of the team. Now the team drafts pitching, pitching, and more pitching in June. Preferably Mark Appel in the rd 1.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
If Bogaerts continues to adjust to the pitching in AA (he’s always been able to adjust to pitching/breaking balls with some practice) I might glue myself to SeaDogs/PawSox games. Dude has some serious opposite field power. He has the power/bat speed to sit back on a curve/slider, and if he gets crossed up with a FB, instead of a single to right, can pop it over the left-center wall.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Fuck. Right center, obvs.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
terrible franchise
Fuck off.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Good stuff. Only 115 days until Opening Day. 72 until pitchers and catchers report. Still some big fish to be reeled in over the next few weeks and the WBC rosters get finalized this week.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
grace will almost certainly do time in jail
December 6th, 2012 at 12:34 PM
Late to this, but thanks for all the good info you guys. I really like Bogaerts, almost man-crush levels. Did not know those walk numbers though. I really don’t understand Victirino at this point but liked the Napoli signing for short term. It really can’t get worse than last year..can it?
