Ballin’: Greatest Lakers of All-Time – Magic, Jabbar, Shaq, Kobe, Yes, in That Order
LA Clippers 112, Dallass 90: Caron Butler detonated one on that stiff Chris Kaman. My Clippers are 12-6, winners of four in a row. By next week, the LA media will panic about them again, probably.
And what would a Clippers recap be without mention of Blake Griffin (19 points, 13 rebounds) slam? Lefty, no less. Worth nothing – some people Blake delivered a “dirty” shoulder here. Eh. The lottery-bound Mavericks, still without Dirk, are 8-10.
Toronto 107, Sacramento 100: Reportedly, 12,476 people showed up for this game. I find that impossible to believe. Kyle Lowry, the only reason to care about Toronto, had a solid game: 34 points, 11 assists. Was a big fan of his work at Villanova. Good NBA player, but the Raptors are unwatchable (4-15).
Atlanta 108, Denver 104: Nothing like a dagger … on a dunk. The Nuggets, who received much love from the stat guys in the preseason, are 9-10. Gross game from Iguodala – 2-of-10, seven turnovers.
LA Lakers 103, New Orleans 87: Kobe hit the 30,000 point mark. Nice accomplishment! Sorry, but you’re playing in an era of LeBron/Durant in their prime. And you’ll never be Michael. And you’re still only the 4th greatest Laker of all-time (Magic, Jabbar, Shaq). Also, he had a finger-pointing moment with Dwight Howard on the bench. Chris Duhon started at point for the Lakers and had 10 assists and zero turnovers. Anthony Davis missed the game for the Hornets, who got 31 points from Ryan Anderson, but little or nothing from everyone else.

I think I’d put Kobe ahead of Shaq, if only for the longevity aspect.
Also, shouldn’t The Logo be on this list? Or is this just “modern” era?

Anybody having problems using Chrome with facebook & embedded youtube videos lately?
December 6th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Austin Rivers 0% from the field in 21 minutes, 1 point, not sure how many ankles broken with sick crossovers though I think advanced stats like that are for clueless fans.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:39 AM
My Clippers are 12-6
Your Clippers?
/doesn’t usually click on Balln.

I use Chrome and haven’t seen any problems.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
TBL with some shots fired at Kobe. nice work.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Magic, Jabbar, Kobe, West, Shaq in that order.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Hopefully this turns into a kobe v lebron thread a la 2010
December 6th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
James Worthy being better than Scottie Pippen should net a top five spot on this list
December 6th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Is it Shockwave flash crashing?
December 6th, 2012 at 10:42 AM
Where is the unsolicited Kobe attack cuming from?
December 6th, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Not enough posterizing dunks or YouTube clips demonstrating his prowess.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
Clutch
December 6th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
Not really fair to judge him on one game. His 28% shooting on the year paints a better picture.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:44 AM
34 and 11 is solid? Lowry must’ve not broken any ankles or had any huge dunks for TBL.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
“has a sick crossover could go number 2″
/Low 7 figures
December 6th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Elgin Baylor getting no love… I’m guessing he’d be seventh on the Laker list?
Didn’t realize Mikan played only 7 seasons.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
I always get the sense that any time Kobe accomplishes something, TBL feels like less of a man or something. Sometimes the attacks are simply childish. Actually, most of the time. It’s nice that Lebron/Durant are sharing an era. Kobe had his own era.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
Maybe he saw that Jimmer guarded him for a stretch and rightfully downgraded the performance
December 6th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Raps lost.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Duncan.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Baylor sixth, I mean.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:51 AM
I’d guess more people today only know him as the guy who was always sitting there at the draft lottery waiting to see where he’d be making his next doomed pick which is too bad…from what I understand he was one of the first big time scorers who wasn’t a giant
December 6th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
As a fan of the NBA who isn’t blinded by hatred(I’m surprised TBL didn’t rate Chris Mihm higher than Kobe), I would go with Magic #1, Kobe #2. I’d be fine with Kareem #2 but there is no way Shaq is a greater Laker than Kobe.
For the record, Magic is on record that he thinks Kobe is the greatest Laker ever. I would think his input has some value, although I disagree. If Kobe can somehow pull this shit-show together and win another title, he would definitely go above Magic in my book.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:54 AM
No indication of anything “crashing.” The embedded videos show up but when I hit play, nothing happens. Works fine on Safari.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
And a lone MVP award!
December 6th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
I get your point, but that is literally apples and oranges. Duncan is the greatest PF ever in my mind but I never felt that he completely took games over that often. He is just the consumate team guy that got it done in virtually every aspect. I do agree that him and Kobe were the two best players of the 2000′s though.
If Shaq had put more work into staying in shape, he would be there also.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Really cool excerpt from Simmons’ article about Baylor:
December 6th, 2012 at 10:56 AM
If Kobe leads this awful team to a title it’s one of the more impressive basketball feats of all time.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Kobe shared the era with Tim Duncan, but I agree with you on the childish TBL stuff. It’s pretty sad.
If you want to have a discussion about who the better NBA player is for their career (between Kobe and Shaq), then I think we can have a reasonable discussion. I would certainly accept the opinion that Shaq had a greater career. But unless I’m mistaken, Shaq didn’t even play 50% of his games with the Lakers (playoffs included), and he’s a better Laker than a guy that played his whole career there, played twice as many games for the team (with more to come), and won two more championships as a Laker? Things like this make it difficult to respect anything you write.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Where’s Karl Malone on the list? If we have Shaq over Kobe we clearly are not looking at just the years played in LA.
December 6th, 2012 at 10:57 AM
Magic/West/Jabbar/Shaq/Mikan/Kobe
December 6th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Awesome. Mikan is probably the most overrated player ever. Sweet look though.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:01 AM
The Stilt was a Laker….
December 6th, 2012 at 11:03 AM
I don’t know how you can be the greatest PF ever and not “take over games.” I guess I don’t know what you eman by “take over games” because he was completely dominant for about 6 years. Look at his 03 playoffs
December 6th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
You guys fell for a classic TBL trolling comment again. When his Balln posts average 12 comments a day, he knew he needed to shake things up.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
I love that he had over 3 blocks a game. Duncan was insanely good in his prime. The best.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Thank you for facts and not hyperbole. You made your point. Definitely a great stretch there.
What I meant was I think Karl Malone was a better scorer and more likely to take over a game offensively than Duncan but no way would I take him over Duncan if I’m building a team. Same thing goes for Barkley when compared to Duncan.
He did have a year where he average 25.5ppg though which is higher than I thought he ever did.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
I think he actually believes these comments because back when he was a Lakers fan he had a hard on for Shaq and spitefully blamed/blames Kobe for Shaq leaving. Forget that it’s been about 8 years and Shaq left 3 other teams on not-so-great terms.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:09 AM
Is that a thing now?
December 6th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
Dammit. All these years, you’d think I’d learn. And I’m not even an NBA guy.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:10 AM
Kobe – 1 MVP, 2 Finals MVPs
Duncan – 2 MVPs, 3 Finals MVPs
Edge: Duncan
December 6th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
I still think it’s funny that when the Lakers beat the Magic in ’09 Kobe went from 0 titles to 4.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
That was probably his only season above 40 mpg. Pretty sure for the last 8-9 seasons he hasn’t played more than 35 mpg, which hurts his per game stats a bit.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Air tight.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
Gerald Wallace, Ray Felton, Disagana Diop, Tyrus Thomas, and Adam Morrison.
/top 5 Bobcats
December 6th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
I read that Morey article from the roundup. Morey had a funny line ” the Lakers had that Smush Parker year to get back in the lottery and get Bynum”.
The Smush Parker Year. #6th greatest Laker, presumably.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
Seriously though, of all the things you could state to make a case for Duncan being better than Kobe, that’s the crap you send forth?
December 6th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
because back when he was a Lakers fan
Ha. Forgot about that. Even more funny when today he calls the Clippers his team.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
I think it sums it up nicely, yes.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Hmmm…Top 5 Celtics?
Russell, Bird, Havlicek, Cousy, McHale?
Pierce? Parish? DJ?

Kobe gets a free pass for those years he acted like a bitch and couldnt co-exist with Shaq it seems.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
No coincidence Derek Vinyard was a Celts fan…

Gerald Wallace, Ray Felton, Disagana Diop, Tyrus Thomas, and Adam Morrison.

Morrison is also top five for Beşiktaş Milangaz. Neither Kobe nor Duncan can claim that.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
Bird, Russell, Cousey, Havlicek,…
Pierce? I guess, but I don’t like it.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:23 AM

/slow wank
December 6th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
Kirk Hinirch, Luc Longley, John Paxson, Toni Kukoc and Jerry Sloan would never lose a game
December 6th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Well done, boys. Bringing the heat today. Rivers is a MASSIVE bust. What’s funny is that it was called on here for a long time. Well, at least called by those who weren’t mesmerized by that SICK CROSSOVER. Who knows? Maybe his game translates better to the And-1 Tour… if it still exists.
In truth, he has the pedigree to become a serviceable NBA player. But, his biggest problem will always be that his strength is as a “ball in hand” player without the athleticism to be successful in the Association as the ball dominant player.
If he can adjust to be a player who can come off screens and make moves or hit mid-range j’s, then he might play for a while. If not? Bust City, baby.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Needs more Rudy T and Bill Laimbeer.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:28 AM
No Chris Mullen? Shame on you.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
Jud Buechler would be huge off the bench.
/On his wikipedia page: “He is the all-time NBA leader in “trillions” (logging playing time in a game but not getting anything for the stat sheet, resulting in a number followed by 12 zeroes), with 55.”
December 6th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
I think the Finals MVP argument is more convincing, if you want to throw out the reg. season MVP’s (Kobe may have deserved one of Nash’s) that’s fine by me.
I think Duncan doesnt get enough credit because a) He played in SA, b) didn’t put up ungodly scoring numbers, and c) His finals were largely unmemorable, not because of his play but because aside from the Pistons series nobody watched.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
I’m not really arguing against you, I just think there are much better things to cite than MVP awards that are decided by humans that are easily influenced by narratives. Shouldn’t Duncan actually have one more Finals MVP? I thought Tony Parker stole one, but maybe my perception of that is wrong.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
Absolute gold, if true.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Greatest Charlotte Hornets..
Mourning, Larry Johnson, Glen Rice, Del Curry, uh..Mugsy Bogues.
/Kobe, who was a Hornet for about 5 days, then traded for Divac.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Those were Bulls bro.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
That dude had to be an unreal athlete (was a sick volleyball player) because he was the worst fucking basketball player when he was at Arizona. I mean zero ball skills. None. Then, suddenly, that prick finds his way on to NBA rosters for 11 years. 11 fucking years that guy stole money in the NBA.
/I do not care for Jud Buechler
December 6th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
I thought the exercise was to keep it team specific
If you sent out a front line of Longley, Sloan and Bill Wennington at the same time there’d be bodies left on the floor…and that’s great about the trillions, guess Jack Haley didn’t appear in enough games to claim that honor
December 6th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
Completely missed that. Damnit.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
The Pistons signing Buechler in ’99 was when I knew the dynasty was truly dead
December 6th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Mark Price, Harper, LeBron, Nance, Daugherty
with World B. Freeeeee coming off the bench.

December 6th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
Cleveland would have to turn to Wally Szae4gsfgs7*f for some minutes
December 6th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
I honestly don’t get how anyone who watched him at Duke could say he was going to be a solid NBA player, he clearly has a shitload of problems with his game and showed no interest in working on them.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
His year in college was nothing special either. 43/36/65 shooting percentages, A/T ratio below 1.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Get off Wally’s World. He’s the MF Man.
/It’s no coincidence
December 6th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Namely, what the hell is he *good* at? He could get to the rim in college but he wasn’t a great finisher, partly because the D never had to worry about him kicking it out.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
You are correct, sir.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Blue Devils are better this year without him.
/He did have his one highlight shot over Zeller at UNC
//Still cant believe that game..dammit
December 6th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Truth. His game had huge holes in it. He dominated lesser HS competition and was deemed amazing. It’s easy to get the original hype considering his bloodlines, but after watching him last year it certainly seemed obvious that he had a long way to go.
/New Orleans obviously disagreed
December 6th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Whitest top 5 of any team?
The 92-93 Cavs could run Price, Ehlo, Kerr, Ferry and Jay Guidinger out there at once. Checkmate bitches.
December 6th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Fuck Danny Ferry and his sorry, no talent, less than no athletic ass for fucking the Cavs of the late 80′s.

Sidenote:
Barry Alvarez just killing it on the Dan Patrick show. Don’t care for his style, but he is nothing but dead honest.
/Won’t ask Chryst to take job because it wouldn’t be fair after just 1 year at Pitt

Forgot to add to fuck that blind MF’er too.
/Factory of Sadness
December 6th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
This post is hilarious. Kobe has 2 more championships as a Laker, the same amount of MVP awards, and has played his entire career as a Laker. #3 behind Magic/Kareem, sure….but #4 behind Shaq?
That’s honestly the dumbest thing I’ve read in a long time.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
However, your trolling was successful

Jabbar, Magic, Kobe, Shaq, West, Wilt, Baylor
December 6th, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Kareem is probably the third best player of all-time behind Russell and Jordan. A shame his introversion gets him lost in the historical shuffle.
