Big Lead Sports Chat with Greg Bedard, NFL Writer at the Boston Globe
Last week we chatted with TV critic Alan Sepinwall, and before that, Dan Lebatard and Norman Chad. This week, our guest is one of the most knowledgeable NFL writers in the business, Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe. I saw this Q&A he did recently and my guess is few guys watch as much film as Bedard does. He knows the Patriots and Packers as well as anyone, so ask him anything.

Why did your brother Erik suck so bad for the Pirates last year?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Should be fun.
Q: How closely are GMs tied to coaches? If you fire one, do you have to fire the other? Obviously GMs are going to want “their” guy at coach, but are GMs/coaches ALWAYS package deals?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Given how banged up the Texans are in their secondary, do you think there is any way they can beat the Pats in Foxboro this Monday? Also, do you think it matters to the Pats if they win given that the chances would still be pretty slim for them to catch the Texans for homefield in the AFC?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
Roeth…..Old cousin Erik (no relation) also didn’t do so hot for my Red Sox, so I don’t know what to tell you. He could be a little nicer about sucking, at least.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:04 PM
Hearing/reading a lot about “Coaches are tied to QBs.” Shanahan had Elway, won; had crap in Washington, lost, now has RG3, winning.
Belichick didn’t have a QB in Cleveland; now he has one in Brady.
can you think of any head coaches who are considered “great” that didn’t have a star QB?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Greg – tell me everything you know about Byron Stingily. I’m really excited about this guy.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
I’ve been told you watch a lot of film. Is it hard getting the reel-to-reel now that most teams have gone digital?
Seriously though, how soon do you get the All-22 footage? What’s the process on that? What about before it was more available to the public.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Q: Are you in agreement with Shaughnessy that all bloggers are writing in their parents’ basement?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Jimmy Johnson comes to mind.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Tom Brady has to have a small weenie, doesn’t he? I mean there’s no way a guy can have a supermodel wife, multiple Super Bowl rings, a great college education, and a giant hog too.

And do you see the team extending both Raji and Matthews before their deals come up (I’m already assuming Jennings is gone to get overpaid by the Vikings or someone)?

Q: How closely are GMs tied to coaches? If you fire one, do you have to fire the other? Obviously GMs are going to want “their” guy at coach, but are GMs/coaches ALWAYS package deals?
“Good question. And thanks for having me, Jason. I feel very honored to be on the same day Jessica Biel graces the round up. …. Well, there’s a few ways you can do it. You can go with the strong GM model, like in Green Bay with Ted Thompson, and he has to pick his own guy. You can go with the strong coach with a GM that will work with him (Andy Reid, Belichick, McDaniels) or you can go with a package deal, that is rare.
I think you’re alluding to the Jets’ situation. That’s going to be interesting. For me, you have to decide on Rex first. If he stays and Tannenbaum is going to be the change to sell to fans, then you have to get a GM that will work equal to Rex. Be his checks and balances but not in a position to fire him. You can’t bring in a strong GM if Rex stays. Even if the guy says he loves Rex, he’s always going to want his own guy at some point.”

What is the short list of current short list of assistants likely to vie for head coaching jobs next year, and which of them is most likely to succeed?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
Andy Reid and great coach should never be in the same sentence.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
Still getting that #2 seed is pretty damn important, so yeah I think it matters.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Can we add this retroactively to the except/accept conversation earlier?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Hi Greg, long time first time. How would you view the following quote in terms of showing knowledge of how the Patriots have been working the last couple of years and the league in general (referring to the 2013 Draft): “They’ll, as usual, have a dozen draft picks.”

“Last thing first, if the Patriots beat the Texans, they are very much in the picture for the No. 1 seed. They have two matchups with the Colts, and the Vikings aren’t a pushover. But I do think the No. 2 seed is more realistic. The No. 2 seed is in the Patriots’ hands if they win out, which would be tough but not impossible (49ers next).
I do think the Texans can beat the Patriots, even with their second, because Brady can only beat them through the air if he has time to throw. I think this is a tough matchup for a very beatup Patriots line. The one wild card will be the Patriots’ turbo no huddle. I expect them to run it a lot with an extra day off, and we’ll see if the Texans can keep up. The key to that is running the ball, not throwing it. It keeps the clock moving and the defense on the field. Passing and incompletions works against the no huddle. That’s why it will be important for backup guards like Donald Thomas and Nick McDonald to having a very good game against that Texans front.”
December 6th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
+5 actual picks, mole.
My question is: does interacting with all the Patriots-haters, Bedard-haters, haters in general on twitter, sour your interactions with fans? How do you avoid becoming Peter King, and just openly engaging and egging on idiots on twitter?

December 6th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
“Hey Greg, how is the offensive line keeping Brady so clean, considering they were expected to be below averaging and are routinely shuffling subs in for injuries?”
I could be wrong, but Brady’s struggling when it comes to the deep passing game, isn’t he? And isn’t that in part because his line is so shaky and can’t provide him with adequate time? The short passing game is phenomenal as always, though.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
If the Ravens win out, they get the 2 seed though, right? Since their last game is against the Broncos and would break the 3 way tie.

Q: What is with the lack of communication in the Pats’ secondary that has led them to giving up so many wide-open deep passes?
A: “I don’t think that’s been the biggest problem — lack of rush up front, subpar talent and technique in the backend has been mostly to blame — but there has been some communication problems because so many guys have been returning from injury or playing new positions. McCourty was a CB, now he’s a FS. Gregory was a FS, got hurt and was out, and is now a SS. Dennard is a rookie. Talib’s new to the system….it’s a work in progress.”
December 6th, 2012 at 12:26 PM
Do you think the Thursday night games have watered down the product? Aside from most of the matchups being less-than-stellar to begin with, most of the games flat-out sucked.

With my background having worked in litigation, I find listening to press conferences appalling at times, particularly the “Talk about X” thing. Are those kind of questions a bigger problem now than in the past, or is it better than it used to be. Also, how much preparation do you spend thinking about how to phrase questions, and not just the topic? Is it different for press conferences vs. interviews?

The thing is, I still think they could have won it without him with Chung and Gregory at safety, McCourty, Dennard and Arrington at corner. I mean, they almost won it last year with slop on the field, and this defense is much more talented than last year.
But having Talib allows McCourty to be at safety and he helps limit big plays…so my answer is 60 percent to 62 percent

It would be wrong. They’re emerging out of rebuilding mode and are looking for quality over quantity (trade ups for Jones and Hightower). They were doing the reverse the few years before, and not doing a very good job at it. But having Brady and stud core allowed them to deal with it.

Hi Greg,
What is your take on the Tim Ryan Shannon Sharpe color fiasco?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
He gets rid of the ball so quickly. Brady is so good pre snap against most teams — teams that chance pre-snap/post-snap looks like the Ravens, Jets and Dolphins are among the exceptions — that he knows where he’s going with the ball before the snap and gets rid of it. Favre was like that in 2007 for the Packers. Unreal how he knew exactly what was going to happen before it did. It also helps that the Patriots are a horizontal passing team. It’s not like they’re Air Coryell.”
December 6th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
Come on, admit it, Brady is just a system QB right ?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:43 PM

It’s actually something that I wrestle with a lot. I have certain rules that I try to live by, like turning off my mentions column during a game, not answer twitter questions for 24 hours after a game (especially after road games when I didn’t get much sleep before a flight), etc. People on Twitter can be real a-holes and I’m human. It’s bound to have some affect on me. Sometimes I think about quitting it altogether, but I do like the interaction with the readers who actually want to have a dialogue and not just tell me what an idiot I am.
I just don’t understand people these days. You’re seriously going to go on Twitter and curse somebody out, be it me or a player, because we made a mistake or an error in judgement? How about i come to your office and curse you out. Grow up, people.

Greg Bedard, I would have to murder a great many people to get alcohol prices down to $8 for a litre of vodka but in doing so I would have to flee Canada. At what point does the needs of the many supersede the needs of the one?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:51 PM
Nope.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:52 PM
Hey, Greg, seems like a lot of the NFL media is getting caught up in the Patriots again despite a relatively weak schedule thus far. Where would you put the Pats in relation to the other AFC playoff contenders (Houston, Baltimore, Denver, Pittsburgh, Indy, Cincy)?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
They don’t know how to think on their own — it’s Bill’s program and you do what he wants — so they have trouble dealing with some situations. And, most importantly, they don’t have Tom Brady.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:54 PM
No, they are a public team so they will always be inflated in the gambling world
December 6th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Q: How serious are the Patriots about replacing Welker with Edelman? Do you think Brady can/would have any influence on whether or not they legitimately try to keep Welker?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Not a gambling website…it just listed them as a 0.1% chance of winning the SB.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Even when he has all day to throw he doesn’t hit many of those throws, though he’s close. The ball just always seems to be slightly on the wrong shoulder. It’s just not his strength. The Patriots smartly play to his strength in the short to medium passing game.
December 6th, 2012 at 12:57 PM
Some have argued the Seahawks have the 4th best defense in the NFC West. Would you agree?
December 6th, 2012 at 12:58 PM
You might have said something similar about the Giants or Packers at this point in the season the last coupla’ years…
December 6th, 2012 at 12:59 PM
I don’t change but while I think the Packers and Steelers are going to be really dangerous when they get more healthy, the Packers’ line problems are going to be a big problem. Patriots toughest matchups in the AFC will be the Broncos and Steelers. They can definitely beat both. I think a healthy Steelers team is the toughest matchup after Pittsburgh switched to playing bump and run against Brady last year. If they zone blitz him, the Steelers have no chance.
December 6th, 2012 at 1:00 PM
Except that those teams had championship personnel and coaching staffs
December 6th, 2012 at 1:01 PM
Not really. Caserio has promise but the Dimitroff succeeded is because he had been elsewhere in the NFL, had his own ideas for running a franchise, and wasn’t afraid to be his own man. Those who aim to be Little Bill are doomed to fail unless they find their Tom Brady.
December 6th, 2012 at 1:02 PM
You do have a point.
December 6th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
It’s cool, the Pittsburgh defense adjusts well in playoff games…. OH GOD WHY DENVER
December 6th, 2012 at 1:03 PM
Yeah, I’m not a fan. But it’s not going away. The NFL can’t play on Fridays or Saturdays by law, and they want to make their money. It’s crap football.
December 6th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
Having presumably seen a ton more tape of the trenches would you consider Jeff Saturday’s play to be a problem to where they’ll look for a replacement next season? Rodgers has said he thinks Dietrich-Smith will be able to step in someday
December 6th, 2012 at 1:05 PM
Greg, after the trunkful of burning medical waste that was McDaniels’ Denver tenure, do you think that vile team-destroying sprite will get another shot at an NFL head coaching job?
December 6th, 2012 at 1:08 PM
I obviously try to avoid the “Talk about X” thing but I’ve been guilty of it. It’s lazy.
When dealing with Belichick, I’m constantly thinking about how to phrase questions so that he’ll actually want to answer it. It’s a real mind game with him. If you word it’s wrong, you’re going to get the one-sentence answer. Usually in one-on-ones with coaches or GMs, I have a script I go off of that has been worked over for a while. With players, I like to go off the cuff and keep it free flowing. With both, however, the followups are always the most important. You have to be ready and have an idea of the answer and follow up before you sit down.

So I see all the teams with an abundance of high picks just before the rookie salary scale (rams, chiefs, lions) are totally screwed against the cap. Do all those 2009, 2010 players take a huge pay cut when they hit free agency? Teams have to unload them.
December 6th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
Lol, nice. As much as Welker is a system receiver, which is right up there in the category of dumbest football comments ever.
December 6th, 2012 at 1:12 PM
You guys are stuck with him and Holmes because of their contracts. Good luck with that.
December 6th, 2012 at 1:13 PM
Why did Brady kick so much Superbowl ass with Bridget Moynahan and not so much with Gisele??
December 6th, 2012 at 1:15 PM
I guess Greg prefers the Barry Sanders handoff for TD celebrations.

I’m writing performance reviews at work. Mind if I borrow this?
December 6th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
Is that low, high? I don’t know how you really calculate that. The Patriots have the best chance to come out of the AFC, IMO. So that puts them at 50 percent at winning a Super Bowl. Then it’s all about matchup. I don’t know, I’m not a math major.
December 6th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
Please do, John.
December 6th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Patriots, Broncos, Texans, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cincy, Indy
December 6th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
Baby Brady is totally gonna be born on 12/12/12, right?
December 6th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
I know.
60% is way too high. They are the favorites, but against the field it is well below 50%. FO has them at 20%.
December 6th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
On Aaron Rodgers Day?!?!
(Yes, this is actually going to be a thing in Wisconsin this year)
December 6th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
Are you naming your spawn after Tommy?
/Brady was on our list…before we found out we were having a girl
December 6th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
I think they’re serious about moving on from Welker, how they do that — Hernandez inside, sign a Bess or Amendola, mix in Edelman — I don’t know. They made their choice when they didn’t come to an agreement on a contract extension. The Patriots don’t strike me as an organization that looks backward.
From what I can tell, Brady has no influence on personnel at all. Milloy was his best friend. Brady was not happy about losing Branch the first time around… this is the way it goes around here. I think Welker is terrific, but the Patriots move on all the time from guys that people think the Patriots have to have and they just keep winning. Though the argument is there to be made that they haven’t won a Super Bowl since they started moving on with guys still in their prime (Milloy doesn’t count).
December 6th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Not sure if that makes the baby half evil or double evil? Greg, thoughts?
December 6th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Hey, Greg. Semi-serious question. Describe day 1 of the post-Belichick era. He can’t stay forever, so what happens when he finally gets tired of the grind? Is there an heir-apparent on the staff?
December 6th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
At some point. It could be this offseason if a leaf from the Belichick tree is in position to hire him, like Lombardi in Cleveland. Good times for Browns fans.
All right, I’ve got to run. Thanks everybody for stopping by and to Jason for giving me the opportunity. Great site, I check it a few times a day. More Jessica Biel and Salma Hayek, please. Less Blake Lively.
December 6th, 2012 at 1:36 PM
Ohgod. That…that’s actually gonna happen, isn’t it?
Poor Spencer.

Just got back from lunch and i read this. This is just as phenominal as SousedBergins eagle dropping the goat off a cliff post from yesterday. you guys are on fire as of late. Bravo.

what’s wrong with blake lively?
