I hope a corporate fiduciary is appointed as guardian of this kid’s estate and/or trustee, as the case may be. Otherwise, I wonder how that money will be used by Uncle Ray Ray.

What the NFL should do is make all the payments out to Zoey directly, so they can only be deposited into accounts in her name. Her fiduciary could still take out the money from there, but in that case, she would be under a legal obligation to use the money in Zoey’s best interest.

Belcher’s contract for 2012 was $1.9 million and she stands to receive somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.5 million over the life of these benefits. Not bad considering they’ll be dispersed in a much more financially sustainable manner, depending on who the guardian ends up being and how responsible they are.
