Mark Sanchez Named Jets Starting QB by Rex Ryan For Jacksonville Game
Mark Sanchez will start at QB for the Jets Sunday against lowly Jacksonville, the team announced at 8 am.
What the Jets have yet to reveal: Who is his backup? It’s a legitimate question, given how poorly Sanchez has played the last two games. I don’t see how it isn’t McElroy.
When that happens, you can fire up all the “trade Tebow” talk, although he probably isn’t going anywhere because, well, what’s the market for him? Doesn’t that Tebow-to-Thomas TD pass in the playoffs seem like years ago? It’s barely been 11 months.
As we opined Monday, Sanchez has to be the QB vs. Jacksonville. The Jaguars are a joke, and if Sanchez can’t perform well against arguably the league’s worst defense, you might as well make McElroy your starter for the final three games.
The Sanchez optimist: With a healthy, slightly more experienced group of WRs next year, and improvements to the OL and running game … eh, I’ll stop there. BUT! As Nate Silver noted Sunday:
2010: Sanchez QB rating 75.3, Jets D 6th in NFL, Jets 11-5. 2012: Sanchez QB rating 75.6, Jets D 26th in NFL, Jets 4-7.

It’s a legitimate question, given how poorly Sanchez has played in his NFL career
December 5th, 2012 at 9:39 AM
Well thank the lord this has been answered!

This is sweet. It must be Shitty NFL Teams Update Day on The Big Lead!
When’s the Raider update? Oh, and the Jaguar one should be awesome with Duffy writing about Chad Henne and his 0-4 record in The Game… oops. I digress.
December 5th, 2012 at 9:41 AM
Who’s starting at wide receiver for the Browns?
December 5th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
Nate Silver + Jets = dick’splosion @ thebiglead
December 5th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
Hey, God Damnit. They’ve won 2 in a row and are only a game behind the Saints right now.
/Don’t win too many
//Still needs that top 10 pick next year
///Shit! The Chiefs next? 5-8 here we come
December 5th, 2012 at 9:44 AM
Whoa whoa whoa. Worse than Arizona?
December 5th, 2012 at 9:45 AM
Silver finally gets into the foos-ball. What are the probabilities who wins the Super Bowl, Nate?
December 5th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
Only two QB’s have a worse QB rating than the Sanchize…. Matt Cassell and John Skelton
December 5th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
Arizona isn’t bad at all defensively. Offense is another question.
December 5th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
Mark Sanchez Just Wins Football Games. Top 8 QB.
December 5th, 2012 at 9:48 AM
I think that tweet was to show that Sanchez has always been this bad…he just happened to have a really good defense in 2010 to carry his ass.

Read the linked post.
December 5th, 2012 at 9:50 AM
Jets D is actually now 10th in yards allowed and 22nd in points. Playing Arizona tends to help the rankings.

Here’s a fun career stat comparison:
Quarterback A: 59 starts, 55.2% comp, 67 TD, 64 INT, 6.5 YPA
Quarterback B: 59 starts, 59.8% comp, 64 TD, 67 INT, 6.5 YPA
Quarterback A is The Sanchise. Quarterback B? You guessed it. Tim Couch.
December 5th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
Smart move. He plas bad in this one, Sanchez will bench himself.
December 5th, 2012 at 9:52 AM
Jags are going to feast on Sanchez. Prediction: Jags 9. Jets 6.
December 5th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Remember when the Broncos were gonna suck because they traded Tebow?
December 5th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
Couch played on horrible teams, though. He never really had a chance.
December 5th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
Does this mean I have to put my pants back on?
December 5th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
Agreed
December 5th, 2012 at 9:55 AM
Tim Ryan will be back at 1PM with a “UNC-Greensboro Basketball! They’re HORRIBLE!!” post.
December 5th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
Well, that’d explain why he never made two straight AFC title games.
December 5th, 2012 at 9:56 AM
should have been 1-3. LLoyd blew that 2005 game.
December 5th, 2012 at 9:59 AM
32nd in Football Outsiders offensive efficiency. Up next: Jacksonville (30th), San Diego (22nd), Tennessee (27th), and Buffalo (18th).
December 5th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
Is there a kicker controversy in Cleveland that you need to cover?
December 5th, 2012 at 10:00 AM
This is true. I don’t think Couch was terrible. But, he played on 2 of the worst teams imaginable, with offensive lines that were worse than some college teams. That guy just got pounded into submission until his right shoulder became jello.
I think he would have been a very good NFL QB with talent around him.

I expect Tebow to run some wildcat for the Jags tomorrow after Rex Ryan trades him for a Slim Jim and a copy of Slut’s Feet Weekly.
December 5th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Arizona is a playoff caliber defense with an offense built to lose 16 games. They are now having issues between defensive players because some of them (dockett) didn’t want to give up a touchdown to the Jets because even though it would have given the offense a chance to tie the game up with like a minute left (TD+2pt conversion) the defense knew that horrible offense wouldn’t do shit. So better to just lose 7-6.
December 5th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Sigh. Guy was going to be great.

Went out with a cute, naive little sweetie twice. Was ready to bed her up on date 3. We were at dinner. She looks at the TV and says, “Look, it’s Uncle Jimmy!” Low and behold, Traficant’s ugly ass was on TV.
She explained that Traficant came over to their house in Boardman all the time. Dinner, drinks, parties, etc… He was a regular part of their “family”. And she said “family” in such a way that made me understand that she was neither naive nor sweet, despite her cute looks and soft voice.
I dropped her off and never thought of calling her again.

Butt fumble is a joke of a QB. He is yet another bust QB from USC…the Jets will always be irrelevant in NYC.

Top 8 butt fumbler.
December 5th, 2012 at 6:25 PM
@Jason McIntyre here we go Sanchez has been an average qb at best his entire career. He often overthrows or underthrows his targets and he is a “real” qb. He was a game manager when the jets went to the afc championships. He was lead by top defenses. He has violently regressed in the last two years. Tebow started ona team that went 4-14 before he started and was 1-4 when he took over he lead them to a 8-8 finish and a play off victory over the number one defense last year. He is unfairly criticized because of whatever his faith or that he isn’t a great passer but he just wins. Rex Ryan brought him to the jets strictly to be on the front page of the newspapers. To say Sanchez is better is disrespectful and wrong. Sanchez will lose more and is mentally soft. Tebow can and has the ability to lead a team to victory. The broncos defense was ranked in the 20s and the offense worked for him if you let him run the spread option he will beat any team.
December 5th, 2012 at 6:37 PM
Tony – Don’t disagree with much of anything you said. MOST IMPORTANT: The jets owe Sanchez a lot of money next year whether they cut him or keep him on the roster. The decision to put him in was a financial one.
December 5th, 2012 at 6:38 PM
If Sanchez fails again against Jax, i do think he’s done. But the Jags D is so bad, you have to toss Sanchez back in there and give him a chance. Owner is cheap, I can’t see him cutting Sanchez and eating the contract. What owner would?
December 5th, 2012 at 6:47 PM
Didn’t the Panthers (owned by Jerry Richardson) do something real similar with Jake Delhomme? I think he was being paid by the Panthers and Browns in the same year beause of the lack of offset language.
December 5th, 2012 at 6:48 PM
I agree its financial but I just don’t understand why he keeps getting chances. They paid him to basically ease his ego. IMO Rex and Sanchez need to go eat the money to fight another day. Jax wont b so bad nxt year if the have Tebow as their qb. Let me reiterate I hated tebow as a qb coming out of college but u called me head of PR of his. I saw him win and win last year and it changed me. I refuse to accept Rex’s excuse of him being a bad practice player duh he was in Denver.
