Mario Cristobal Has Been Fired By FIU
Mario Cristobal built FIU from arguably the worst program in FBS into a bowl team. He turned down multiple better jobs to stay with the Golden Panthers. He was rumored to be a candidate for the USF job. FIU just fired him after a 3-9 season. That’s just silly.
Cristobal went 1-3 out of conference, losing at Duke and UCF and at home to Louisville by a touchdown. He went 2-6 in the Sun Belt, losing four games by a touchdown or less. FIU thinks it can do better, apparently. Good luck with that.

Mario Cristobal
I assumed this guy was one of the shitty singers of N Sync or something.

Signal is lit, but not the one you think. Cristobal is a former player, grad assistant, and assistant coach at the U. I’m sure he will land on his feet.

Something fishy here
December 5th, 2012 at 10:15 AM
IS this the equivalent of USF canning Leavitt in terms of how much they’ll eventually regret it?
December 5th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
they need to hire that kid on crutches who wanted to participate in FIU/MIAMI brawl.
December 5th, 2012 at 10:16 AM
There has got to be something more to this story. No way did this guy deserve to get fired soley on one bad season after what he did the last few.
December 5th, 2012 at 10:17 AM
Well Pitt has their new coach if Chryst does bolt.

I assumed he was a Portugal soccer player.
December 5th, 2012 at 10:18 AM
Could it be that he spoke to Pitt without permission so they fired him with cause?
/rumor!
December 5th, 2012 at 10:19 AM
He’s the one that’s going to save the Republican Party in 2016.
December 5th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Close games or not, 2-6 in the Sunbelt???
December 5th, 2012 at 10:20 AM
Some of these schools are so delusional. Even FCS schools are getting in on it. App State fired Jerry Moore. Oh, you know the same Jerry Moore that won 3 straight national titles, has made the FCS playoffs 8 straight years and finished in the top 10 in 12 of the last 15 years. Oh, and he coached them to arguably the biggest upset in college football history.
Nah, it’s cool. GTFO.
December 5th, 2012 at 10:22 AM
Mario Cristobal must have been banging the AD’s daughter without rubbers or something as he is a great coach.
/T.Y Hilton is the man

Teams who drafted early during the first years of the new rookie salary structure have a huge advantage in free agency and team building right? Lions are fucked with those Suh, Stafford, Calvin Johnson contracts where Redskins and Colts are sitting pretty with Luck and RGIII on the cheap.

I’m an App State fan and it was probably time to go. They’ve been underperforming and undisciplined for the last four seasons. It’s fucking shameful that they put out the “Retirement” story and then the truth comes out that they did fire him, but he was coming to an end and I’m guessing they felt it was time to get someone in that could bridge into the move to FBS.
If he wanted to coach just one more year though, they should have let him.
December 5th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
Maybe he slept with the Villanova bball coach?
December 5th, 2012 at 10:29 AM
His name is Mario Cristobal. Of course something shady went on.
December 5th, 2012 at 10:30 AM
FIU hired and fired Isiah Thomas so I wouldn’t put anything past this athetlic dept in terms of not thinking rationale.

he’s overqualified. happens all the time
December 5th, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Also to be fair coach Moore is in his mid seventies, it’s not like they fired a guy in his prime. But that probably makes it worse.

Bruce Arians on line 1.

Waiting for the obvious “cristobal” CSI Miami takeaway…

Thanks kazzy– no twitter at work for me.

basically what scripty said, just with different words.
December 5th, 2012 at 10:48 AM
If his name was Chuck Johnson, this wouldn’t have been a story.
Plus, the Sun Belt is about to morph into C-USA and his team will not be invited because they were 2-6 in the Sun Belt, the team has no fan base, and they play in a shitty stadium.
December 5th, 2012 at 10:49 AM

FIU plays in the Superdome?
December 5th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Teams need to unload all their pre 2010 early draft signings, will be a crash in wages for that group.
December 5th, 2012 at 10:52 AM
Didn’t Megatron sign a huge contract? When does it actually kick in?
December 5th, 2012 at 10:53 AM
Kazzy that is an awesome website for the salaries.

Whichever teams have the most high draft picks on the roster from the 2010 draft and before are completely and totally fucked.

That spotrac site is awesome.

Browns are somehow benefitting from drafting Robiskie & Veikune.
December 5th, 2012 at 11:06 AM
Chiefs are totally fucked. Need a Lisk to take this further.
Basically:
Teams that have the most high draft picks from 2010, 09, 08, 07 still on the roster have a huge problem with the cap. Conversely, teams with the most late round picks in those years and the most high draft picks on the rosters since 2011 are in fantastic shape. Colts are sitting pretty.
December 5th, 2012 at 11:08 AM
GM’s you need to get those 2010 first round draft picks the fuck off your roster.
December 5th, 2012 at 11:13 AM
Saddest thing ever is Marty Hurney traded away that pick for pennies on the dollar so we couldn’t see how he would have fucked up another contract.
Did draft Jimmy Clausen and Armanti Edwards in the next two rounds though!
December 5th, 2012 at 11:16 AM
FIU is f*cked in the head. He has turned this program around. I believe he stared a Frosh QB a couple time this season, only know that because i bet those games. EJ Hilliard, actually looked decent, and of course made some mistakes.
December 5th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
Losing four by less than a TD falls squarely on the shoulders of the coach. You weren’t ‘out talented’ you were out coached.
December 5th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Yeah, when Bill Walsh lost he was always blown out.
