Gus Malzahn Will Be Next Auburn Head Coach, According to Report
Auburn has a new head coach and it won’t be Bobby Petrino. Gus Malzahn will return to the Tigers as the head coach, after spending one season at Arkansas State. This move just makes total sense.
Malzahn has proven his worth. In one season, at Arkansas State he led the Red Wolves to a 9-3 record, with two paycheck losses away to Oregon and Nebraska. Their offense improved from 49th in yards per play to 15th. Gene Chizik went 30-10 with Malzahn and 3-9 without him.
He’s also the most practical hire. He recruited most of Auburn’s offensive players to run his offense. Keeping his former colleague Trooper Taylor on board would help Auburn keep together its Top 10 Rivals recruiting class.

In theory it makes sense, but given the folks running Auburn’s athletic department, there’s still something fishy about all of this.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:39 PM
I’ve been in meetings. Did he accept minutes after the Arkansas job was filled?
December 4th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
No, he accepted earlier today. He and Arkansas were never in talks – lot of bad blood between the two about his departure last time, though I don’t think he did anything wrong there.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:40 PM
Does this mean boosters?
December 4th, 2012 at 3:41 PM
CFB’s next superstar coach.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:42 PM

I didn’t know if he was holding out for Arkansas. I knew there was bad blood, but I thought all those people were gone now.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
that doesn;t look like mangino
December 4th, 2012 at 3:42 PM
CFB’s next superstar coach.
Which I take it means you expect him to be coaching at Ohio State in the next 6-8 years.

Is Kirby Smart ever leaving Alabama?
December 4th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
In the Ozarks, blood feuds outlast that.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:43 PM
Can’t wait to hear who Auburn hires in 2014 when Malzahn bombs
December 4th, 2012 at 3:45 PM
Any word on who is going to take the Oregon job when Chip Kelly bolts to the Raiders to coach Terrelle Pryor and Al Davis’ offensive speed?
December 4th, 2012 at 3:46 PM
Not for second-tier SEC job when he is the presumptive replacement at Alabama.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Replace Raiders with Eagles
December 4th, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Duffy, I’d like to see your SEC job hierarchy. I’d go Bama, FL, LSU, UGA, aTm, Tenn, SC, Ark, Miz, Aub, Ole Miss, Vandy, MSU, UKnn
December 4th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
Auburn is way too low. Seriously below Missouri? That is insane.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
the presumptive replacement at Alabama.
saban seems young-ish. why would he leave? not to give the pros another go. maybe just cash out and enjoy life? i’d love to see more folks do this, but it seems in their dna to always compete
December 4th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Smart was closer to getting the Auburn job than Duffy would have you believe. No, Smart would not turn down a raise of over $2 million because he would like to hold out for when Saban quits one day, maybe.
What is not being mentioned: Petrino was supported by some powerful folks, but not THAT powerful. He will take the Southern Miss job, or he could return to Louisville – yes – if Strong leaves.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Sure doesn;t
Eventually, yes. I honestly do not think he actually considered going to Auburn.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Swap AUB and MIZ. Swap TN and A&M
December 4th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
Doesn’t sound like he’ll leave until he’s sure his current OC is taking over.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Now that the college-to-NFL stigma is gone, some GM/owner is going to throw a LOT of money at Saban.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
oh hell no…that’ll be darrell hazell.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:55 PM
jimmy haslam!
December 4th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
I think they worked that out and those assurances are in place.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Saban’s NFL stigma still remains.
“Waiter, I’ll have the Culpepper.”
December 4th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Now that the college-to-NFL stigma is gone, some GM/owner is going to throw a LOT of money at Saban.
You think Saban has another NFL run in him? He didn’t seem to enjoy the last one all that much. Though I guess even Pete Carroll is doing better the second time around.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
I find this hire quite humorous.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
But the way he left the NFL was shitty – not Petrino shitty – but shitty nevertheless. People remember that.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
Duffy is a B1G guy, his opinion on big boy football shouldn’t be all that valid, also, they have teams from west of the Mississippi.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
Oh I remember it well. It was pretty damn shitty.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:58 PM
he was in fucking miami. id rather play for the raiders than dolphins.
December 4th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
That is also what I had read.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:00 PM
Jerruh Jones?, unless he hires Andy Reid
December 4th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
he was in fucking miami. id rather play for the raiders than dolphins.
Even right now?
Dolphins are 5-7, Raiders are 3-9. Raiders have also allowed about 140 more points on the year than the Dolphins have.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
You must have read about that Chip Kelly rumor…
/that I started
December 4th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Jerruh Jones?, unless he hires Andy Reid
Either of those moves would be priceless.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
\
Nope. Should Saban-to-NFL happen, he’ll want say over personnel like he did in Miami.
//Culpepper over Brees would make me walk out too.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:03 PM
FUCK YEA right now…the dolphins have like 50 celebrity owners, none of whom have a god damned idea of what theyre doing.
at least the raiders can start with a clean slate.
ugh…teal.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
I really thought Auburn was going to trot out Petrino and play these 2 cards:
1. It’s the one job he always really wanted
2. Everyone needs a second chance, blah blah
December 4th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
What happened to the Sean Payton to Dallas chatter?
December 4th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
FUCK YEA right now…the dolphins have like 50 celebrity owners, none of whom have a god damned idea of what theyre doing.
at least the raiders can start with a clean slate.
Your analysis is interesting to say the least. You do know that the spawn of Al Davis is still in charge in Oakland, right?
December 4th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Saban is 61, i can’t see him going anywhere.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
But really, they don’t have any input, do they?
And plus, I bet Serena is an expert on linebackers.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Saban is 61, i can’t see him going anywhere.
So is Pete Carroll.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Just read that Mark Mangino will be the next head coach for the Vols
December 4th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
That coked-up spawn hired a GM
December 4th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
FUCK YEA i know the spawn of al davis is still in charge. much easier to sell to soemone who gives a shit with one owner vs. 50 cocksucking egomaniacs who care more about concessions and merchandise than the team.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
That was all Saban’s call.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
how can they? there’s fucking 50 of them.
is guess jeff ireland’s ruddering that shit…er…ship?
December 4th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
That coked-up spawn hired a GM
I know he did. And Jerry Jones allegedly gave Bill Parcells some personnel control when he was in Dallas.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
FUCK YEA i know the spawn of al davis is still in charge. much easier to sell to soemone who gives a shit with one owner vs. 50 cocksucking egomaniacs who care more about concessions and merchandise than the team.
But do you REALLY think that?
/trying to see how many times I can get you to start a comment with “FUCK YEA!” in one post.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Nope. Bama doesn’t hire assistant’s anymore. When Saban leaves, a big name head coach will replace him. Lots of Aub people think Smart wants the UGA job in a bad way and will wait Richt out for it. I’d also expect Richt to retire within 5 years.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
darrell hazell
Great guy – I’ve met him. He’ll be at a big school withing 3-4 years and in the “playoffs” within 6.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:09 PM

FUCK YEA I do.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Waiting for ESPN to release The Brees 1, starring Dante Culpepper. “From Central Florida to the Minnesota Vikings to Nick Saban’s guy in South Florida, tune in for this epic tale of a bad decision, and how Drew Brees went on to NFL glory.”
December 4th, 2012 at 4:10 PM
Bama, FL, LSU, UGA, aTm, Tenn, SC, Ark, Miz, Aub, Ole Miss, Vandy, MSU, UKnn
Bama.. FL.. LSU… Tie GA, AUB.. SC, ARK… TEN, ATM… MS ST, Ole M, Vandy………. UK
December 4th, 2012 at 4:14 PM
You omitted Missouri, Scripty. Not that they matter much.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:15 PM
No. Bama and Fla. UGA and LSU. SC and AUB. A&M. Ten and ARK. Miz, Ole Miss and MST. Vandy (only as long as Franklin is there). UK
December 4th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
hey Husker – good to see you’re still alive.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Spence – the twitters are telling me that Hazell to Purdue is a done deal
December 4th, 2012 at 4:24 PM
DAMN…that’s a helluva get.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:30 PM
Announcement supposedly tomorrow – I’ll believe it when I see it, but makes me much happier than when it was going to be Butch Jones
December 4th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Why? I think Butch Jones is a helluva coach. He’d be a great hire.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:34 PM
SC as the 5th best? no fucking way. I agree with most of the rest, except aTm being above Ark and Tenn, they are all about the same really.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
Spawn was Al Simmons, not Al Davis
December 4th, 2012 at 4:36 PM
they need to make a good spawn movie. they can even get michael jai white…just no john leguizamo plz.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
So, Malzahn, the genius whose offenses were at their best when he had McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis, and another turn when he had Cam Newton.
He’s not a chicken salad chef in my book just yet. Now, Bobby Petrino can make chicken salad out of chicken shit. As can, apparently, Chris Peterson.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:37 PM
what about when he was at tulsa?
December 4th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
Yes. I just watched this a few weeks ago. Lequizamo damn near ruined that movie.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
UT as the 8th best job in the SEC? Ok guys.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
Everytime I think about the Spawn movie, I throw in an HBO series DVD. That was a epic cartoon.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:40 PM
You’re a homer. That’s accurate.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
It’s no better than 5th and is 3rd in the East. I’d probably put it at 6 behind A&M, but I can see arguments for Auburn, putting UT 7th.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:42 PM
Yes, I am. But I’m not delusional either.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
All clearly ahead: Bama, FL, LSU, GA. All roughly equal: Aub, Ark, Tenn, A&M. Only slightly behind that group: South Carolina. After that who cares.
So the good news is you can say UT is tied for 5th. Or you can just call it 8th, either way.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
“Saban is 61, i can’t see him going anywhere.”
He’ll be in Austin soon. He’ll win a third title this year with Bama, he’ll look around and wonder what else there is left for him to accomplish there, and DeLoss will throw $10MM/year at him, plus postcards of Austin scenery to remind him that Austin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Tuscaloosa. He’ll own Texas in no time.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:44 PM
You sure? You sound a bit delusional.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:47 PM
Austin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Tuscaloosa
Not sayin much there …
{insert any U.S. city name} >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Tuscaloosa
December 4th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
Saban at Texas would be interesting just to see him lose to Ok State or KSU or Baylor.
/Can’t handle uptempo.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
“what about when he was at tulsa?”
I don’t recall Tulsa ever coming close to making a run through their C-USA schedule like Sumlin did with UH on 2 seperate occassions. I’m not saying he won’t work out at Auburn because he should have talent to work with. Just saying he’s not a chicken salad chef like Petrino or Sumlin. It’s kind of like the Kirby Smart bandwagon – big fucking deal that he’s coordinated great defenses under Nick Saban at freaking Alabama (I don’t know what Smart’s resume entails beyond that). Show me a guy that gets UH into the top 10 or turns Louisville into a top 20 program, or Kansas State into a top 10 program – those guys can turn chicken shit into chicken salad and are thus, good coaches.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:49 PM
Flint?
December 4th, 2012 at 4:49 PM
Malzahn is smart. Cherry picking bastard.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:50 PM
Watsonian – my concern with Jones @ Purdue is that he hasn’t shown he can build a program. He has been great at CMU and Cincy, but he has built on Kelly’s successful base. Hope hasn’t left a lot to work with at Purdue. There might be some talent, but I think it needs someone who has experience building from not a lot like Hazell did at KSU
December 4th, 2012 at 4:51 PM
I just read that Jones was Purdue’s first choice, but he passed. Ouch.
December 4th, 2012 at 4:56 PM
Yeah – our AD is a penny-pinching idiot. He almost let Painter walk over $$ last year too
December 4th, 2012 at 5:03 PM
I agree with this list more than any of the others posted, but UGA is not the equal of the other 3.
I tend to think that the Tennessee job is underestimated by most of those on here. I do wonder if a semi-permanent shift has occurred downward though…the thing with Fulmer’s best teams…they weren’t composed of a ton of in-state studs…they were regularly getting who they wanted for GA & SC. No more.
December 4th, 2012 at 5:08 PM
Addiazo (temple) to BC
/No one cares
December 4th, 2012 at 5:09 PM
This is my thought, as well.
December 4th, 2012 at 5:11 PM
rodney…malzahn’s offense has been unreal wherever he’s gone. his offensive philosophy is awesome…as equally as extreme as chip kelly’s. he’s had success in the SEC at two spots in two entirely different ways.
i TOTALLY put him in the chicken salad chef category…shit id even put him over sumlin since he’s had similar success in more places for a longer period of itme.
December 4th, 2012 at 5:16 PM

Good points. I guess I’m just not completely sold yet. And I guess I’ve kind of set it up that I might not be even if he has success at Auburn, where he’ll once again have talent.
December 4th, 2012 at 5:46 PM
Malzahn’s offenses have been very good everywhere, with the exception of last year, when it was pretty clear that Chizik was running things (I say this because Chizik would tell folks this). It’s also got a surprising amount of downhill running, and it has worked in the SEC.
Big question with Malzahn is can he recruit, manage discipline, stuff like that – the things that an HC does, not an OC.
December 4th, 2012 at 5:47 PM
It’s not a sexy hire but I’m fine with it. I think the wildcard factor of Malzahn’s offense gets us over the QB hump we’re obviously going through right now. Hell, if he wins 6 games this year it’s a 2x improvement. And if he wins 6 games this year while developing a competent QB, anything is possible in year 2+.
December 4th, 2012 at 5:52 PM
Petrino got the shaft. I see NO reason not to hire him. Much better coach. Anyone who uses the “Petrino is a bad guy” logic is full of shit. That isn’t relevant in the SEC
December 4th, 2012 at 5:53 PM
That being said, I like Malzahn as a guy, even if I don’t buy his offensive scheme in the long-term.
December 4th, 2012 at 6:00 PM
you kidding me? home fucking run dude. this is as good as chizik was bad.
