One of the best scotch drinking tips I ever got was to always have a bottle of cheap on hand to switch to after your second glass, because your taste buds are fried from the alcohol at that point and it doesn’t make a difference.

Applies to everything. After a few super hopped IPAs beer pretty much tastes the same. The trick is finding a cheap whisky/whiskey/beer that you don’t mind drinkning solo in a pinch.

Here’s the thing about lower shelf bourbons – they all start from the same mash bill as their higher priced label mates. Distilleries get economies that way. Where they vary is in maturation and the barrels. They’re usually kept on the lower floors of rickhouses and have barrels that have a lighter char.
