Possibly bullpen health/pitching depth. Burnett is a free agent, IIRC, and he was very effective in September.

Maybe you get Henry Rodriguez off the roster in a deal also. He struggled so much last year, he may need a change of scenery.;

There is also talk about letting Espinosa go, and plugging Lombardozzi in at 2B. The former has more power at the plate (and has a SS-caliber arm), but the latter is slightly less prone to extended slumps.

If you can’t keep both, let Morse go & replace his bat with Tyler Moore off the bench. The outfield of Harper-Span-Werth would be pretty good defensively.

Like with any team, you hope for good health throughout the roster and at least average production from your key position players & pitchers.

The Nationals would still like to bring back Adam LaRoche, but they have apparently been pretty firm about their intention to not give him more than a two-year deal. With Span in the mix and the option to move Michael Morse a reality rather than a possibility, one unaffiliated agent said the Nationals picked up some leverage in their negotiations with LaRoche. No one could begrudge LaRoche for choosing a better offer and playing elsewhere. But if he comes back to the Nationals, it may have to be on their terms.

Desmond won’t match his numbers from 2012 more than likely but there’s maybe 2 or 3 shortstops you’re taking over him in the NL right now. Neither one of them is on the Atlanta or Philadelphia roster.

Ahem…Jimmy Rollins 4.9 fWAR, Desmond 5.4 fWAR. Not as wide of a chasm as you think, but I rather have Desmond in terms of age and cost. And if I’m going SS in the NL, it’s Tulo, Castro and then Desmond or Rollins.

Suzuki and Ramos is one of the best catcher platoon combos in baseball.

Werth is overpaid for what he provides, but what he provides shouldn’t be undervalued.

Yeah some AAA lineup….Span/Werth/Zimmerman/Harper/LaRoche (if he resigns)/Morse/Suzuki or Ramos/Espinosa.

Only in DC could a backup like Adam LaRoche get billed as a stud. Pretty solid player, don’t get me wrong, but not a guy you fist pump for when you hear your team has signed him to fill the 1B void.

Admittedly I did forget about Wilson Ramos as I believe he was lost for most of last year. I like him as a catcher. That’s why I don’t get the Kurt Suzuki trade unless he’s just exclusively viewed as a backup player or something.

Span is a nice pickup if nothing more than to get the liability that is Bryce Harper in the field to a corner. As a Braves fan, admittedly, I’d probably rather have Span than Justin Upton right now….
