Dan Haren Signed With the Nationals, Probably Excited About Innings Limit
Dan Haren has signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Washington Nationals. Haren, 32, is a former All-Star who has started at least 30 games in eight consecutive seasons. Much like people who become teachers to get the summer off, Haren was probably interested in going to a team that believes in work-limits for any pitcher under the age of 28 or over the age of 29. Haren missed time with a back injury last season. The Nationals are now a lock for a decade-worth of World Series trips.

Offseason Champions!

That photo is very weird. The thick girl with the face that got smashed by the frying pan – she looks like she got photoshopped in there. And Harren is trying his best Dave Navarro. He almost killed the Chili Peppers for godssake.

Solid Pepperdine product.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:17 PM
That’s 4 or 5 spelling errors in the last 3 days… (at least) Get it together…
December 4th, 2012 at 1:19 PM
I saw Navarro on SoA last week. Hilarious. Nats should trade for Chris Perez.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
At first glance, I thought it was Rachel Ray.
/that wasn’t a compliment
December 4th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
Feet.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:24 PM
Why? Their bullpen is stacked. And Perez fucking sucks.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:25 PM
who?

She looks like one of Spencer/Butters’ accursed people, like 4’11. Creepy.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:26 PM
Not a bad 5th starter to have.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:27 PM
Rizzo making moves. Nats favorite for 2013 WS?

So is this baseball guy in a viral video or did he get caught with like one gram of weed?

Great signing provided his hip holds up. Leaves the Greinke suitors down to the two LA teams and Texas.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
WSH, DET and LAA are all +800 last I checked, so yep.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:31 PM
Now, just let LaRoche take the beltway to Baltimore.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Go buy some shoes and get a haircut, hippie!
December 4th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Good. Perez and Asrubal for Castellanos and Rondon. Do it.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:33 PM
Now, just let LaRoche take the beltway to Baltimore.
Really? You’d rather have Morse “play” 1B and let LaRoche walk?
/or are you an O’s fan that wants LaRoche?

This post shows an unfortunate combination of Duffy-level humor and TBL-level understanding of baseball.

It’ll be interesting if the Nats learned from last year are smarter with their pitchers moving forward. I’m talking about extended spring training and skipping starts during the season vs shutting them down.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:37 PM
I would love for the Tigers to trade for Asdrubal. They wouldn’t give up castellanos though (and they shouldn’t).
How about Casey Crosby, Avisail Garcia, and Brian McCann’s little brother?

No one coming off Tommy John surgery so I doubt it. Strasburg-Gio-Zimmerman-Haren-Detwiler. They could always go out and find another starter reclamation and put Detweiler in long relief too. Comak from the Washington Post keeps hinting that he will even after this signing. Someone like Shaun Marcum.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:39 PM
Take him. While he’s a good player, I do not see him duplicating last year. Morse and LaRoche put up very similar numbers, but Morse is 2 years younger; and also, doesn’t have an OF spot with the recent acquisition of Span.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:40 PM
Garcia, Rondon, Villarreal and Smyly.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:40 PM

those are still innings he’s throwing. and while I see the logic in skipping starts, they are also trying to condition him to take the ball every 5 days. if Strasburg gets hurt in the future, it doesn’t mean they were wrong. and if he stays healthy it doesn’t mean they were right. If they end up having above-average success in keeping pitchers healthy, I think it will prove out their approach, but any one guy can get hurt or not hurt.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:41 PM
No they didn’t.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
and they can always trade him if for some reason they’re out of playoff contention at the deadline.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
That one year wonder of a AAA lineup won’t even sniff the top of the NL East, much less the World Series. That division goes through Atlanta or Philly, not DC.

Definitely all valid points. Would just seem to me that for a team with a great starting staff, you’d value an elite defender over a below average defender when there offensive outputs are relatively similar.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Ha, Tigers would never do that. Rondon and Villareal will be in the bullpen this year. And Smyly is the #5 starter.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Or best staff in baseball?
December 4th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Also didn’t realize how old Morse was. 30 years old and only played 100 games twice? (Last year 102 and 146 in 2011) Yeah, I’ll take LaRoche.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Do explain how the current Phillies lineup is better than what Washington is putting on the field. The Phillies don’t even have a center fielder or a 3rd baseman right now.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
a weary traveler seems to have brought us news from the year 2009.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
I’m not sure who is going to make the 162 starts for Atlanta now too. Hanson is gone and Beachy won’t see the field until August if at all in 2013. Still very confused by the Hanson trade when the Braves have Kimbrel and Venters already in their bullpen.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:51 PM
As the resident Phillies fan, I can’t. The Braves and the Nationals both at this time have better teams than the Phillies.
Yeah some AAA lineup….Span/Werth/Zimmerman/Harper/LaRoche (if he resigns)/Morse/Suzuki or Ramos/Espinosa.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:51 PM

I see a lot of downside issues for the Nats, but that’s a good lineup. Zimmerman, Werth and both LaRoche and Morse (whomever they keep) have injury histories. Desmond probably isn’t as good as he was last year. I think Gio takes a step back. But that staff is still pretty good.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Venters had lots of arm issues and the Braves are probably trying to soften that blow. Considering they had Chad Durbin pitching high leverage innings last season, its a good move. Hanson’s shoulder is toast, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him as Brandon Webb 2.0.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
I’m a bit nervous of two guys that have had Tommy John in Strausburg and Zimmerman, and after Zito and Mulder I’ve learned not to put faith in Oakland cast offs like Gio Gonzalez…Detweiler I’ve never even heard of…and I live an hour south of DC….Great marketing, boys, great marketing….
As for Haren he was 12-13 last year with an ERA in the 4′s. Further, only 33-27 with the Angels, a team with quite a bit of talent…I don’t want to say Jury’s out but there’s a reason he only got a 1 year deal. That was very shrewd by the Nats and very well played, I’ll admit.
December 4th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
Here’s your “AAA lineup” next year:
Span, CF
Werth, RF-LF
Zimmerman, 3B
Harper, LF-RF
Morse/LaRoche, 1B
Desmond, SS
Espinosa, 2B
Suzuki/Ramos, C
Pitcher

Only in DC could a backup like Adam LaRoche get billed as a stud. Pretty solid player, don’t get me wrong, but not a guy you fist pump for when you hear your team has signed him to fill the 1B void.
Admittedly I did forget about Wilson Ramos as I believe he was lost for most of last year. I like him as a catcher. That’s why I don’t get the Kurt Suzuki trade unless he’s just exclusively viewed as a backup player or something.
Span is a nice pickup if nothing more than to get the liability that is Bryce Harper in the field to a corner. As a Braves fan, admittedly, I’d probably rather have Span than Justin Upton right now….
Werth’s overrated. Seems like a cool dude but if I were a Nats fan I’d cry myself to sleep every night knowing what we’re paying him.

1. Scares me if he gets on base.
2. Not so much
3. Not so much
4. Very scary now that he’s ‘seasoned’ to MLB’s 162 games.

Harper 9.9 UZR/4.5 FRAA in the outfield last year…real liability in the field.
December 4th, 2012 at 2:07 PM
Surprised SROD is not here doing backflips.
Or maybe he did a backflip and is now on his way to the intensive care unit.
December 4th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
Do you cry yourself to sleep over Uggla’s contract? Cause they made basically the same amount of money last season.

Think he attends the JMac School of Baseball Knowledge.

All Zimmerman did after that cortizone shot on June 22 was hit .321/.383/.584 with 49 XBH, 22 of them homers. He’s also one of the three best defensive 3Bs out there. Guy hit .221 in the first half and still managed a 3.8 WAR season with a bad shoulder.
Going to skip the Harper downtalking because it’s silly to disregard a 19 year old kid who showed he could handle the show adequately.
Desmond won’t match his numbers from 2012 more than likely but there’s maybe 2 or 3 shortstops you’re taking over him in the NL right now. Neither one of them is on the Atlanta or Philadelphia roster.
Suzuki and Ramos is one of the best catcher platoon combos in baseball.
Werth is overpaid for what he provides, but what he provides shouldn’t be undervalued.
Why do you not want to give the Nationals any credit for building a team from basically scratch in the last 6 years?
December 4th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Ahem…Jimmy Rollins 4.9 fWAR, Desmond 5.4 fWAR. Not as wide of a chasm as you think, but I rather have Desmond in terms of age and cost. And if I’m going SS in the NL, it’s Tulo, Castro and then Desmond or Rollins.

December 4th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Wow, that must be a great feeling to actually become a drug!
What say you on the Morse/LaRoche debate? I just don’t see both in DC next year.
December 4th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
I kind of agree with the sentiments of Kilgore in this article he wrote after the Span deal last week:
December 4th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
kazzy, LaRoche was a steadying influence in the middle of the lineup, but he has a hole in his swing (down & away, just off the plate). Morse is a horse (of course, of course), but not a polished fielder.
If you can’t keep both, let Morse go & replace his bat with Tyler Moore off the bench. The outfield of Harper-Span-Werth would be pretty good defensively.
Like with any team, you hope for good health throughout the roster and at least average production from your key position players & pitchers.
December 4th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
Good catch. Where’s my editor???
December 4th, 2012 at 2:33 PM
I just can’t see LaRoche turning down a 3 year deal at age 32 if the Nats refuse to offer more than 2 years.
December 4th, 2012 at 2:34 PM
If you can’t keep both, let Morse go & replace his bat with Tyler Moore off the bench. The outfield of Harper-Span-Werth would be pretty good defensively.
If LaRoche is resigned and Morse is on trade block, what’s the target? Bullpen help? Starter as Haren insurance? Prospects?
December 4th, 2012 at 2:39 PM
Possibly bullpen health/pitching depth. Burnett is a free agent, IIRC, and he was very effective in September.
Maybe you get Henry Rodriguez off the roster in a deal also. He struggled so much last year, he may need a change of scenery.;
There is also talk about letting Espinosa go, and plugging Lombardozzi in at 2B. The former has more power at the plate (and has a SS-caliber arm), but the latter is slightly less prone to extended slumps.
