Orlando Magic Hack Dwight Howard, He Misses Free Throws, Lakers Lose
Dwight Howard, the former Orlando Magic center, scored 21 points and collected 15 rebounds against his former team, but in the 4th quarter, he flopped from the free throw line. The Lakers wasted a 7-point lead in the final quarter, and after the Magic took control, they decided to foul Superman. He went to the free throw line and lost another battle with kryptonite: 7-of-14 free throws (9-21 for the game) and the Lakers lost, 113-103. At home. Afterward, he gave his former teammates the cold shoulder:
After the game ended, Howard went straight to the Lakers’ locker room without shaking Magic players’ hands or saying anything to the four former teammates who made the trip to California: Nelson, Davis, J.J. Redick and Ish Smith.
“He didn’t talk to me,” Davis said. “I didn’t talk to him. I’m here to play basketball. I’m not here to be buddies. Once we talk off the court, it’s cool. But other than that, I have nothing to say.”
Howard was asked “how emotional” it was to play his former team.
“It wasn’t emotional,” he said.
Howard’s 46 percent shooting from the line may not even be the biggest story; Pau Gasol was benched for the final six minutes in favor of Antawn Jamison. D’Antoni’s quote will get the trade rumors swirling again:
“We just have to be a more dynamic team,” he said. “We’re slow right now. Athletically, we’re struggling against young teams that just run up and down.”
The Lakers are 8-9, and it should be noted the Heat were 9-8 two years ago when LeBron bumped Spoelstra and the team seemed on the verge of unraveling … before they got it together and advanced to the NBA Finals.

It may be a bad sign when you’re looking to 36-year-old Antawn Jamison for some athleticism.

This is the first I’m learning about Jamison not only still being in the NBA but playing for the Lakers

The Lakers had this problem playing Bynum & Gasol together. Howard was suppose to fix that. Oops.

How the hell can people make these insane amounts of money and not practice free-throw shooting? It’s the one skill you can actually perfect with practice!

Didn’t Dantoni say he’d be happy with a PPP of 1?
December 3rd, 2012 at 11:27 AM
is Dwight Howard the biggest bitch is professional sports or the largest bitch in professional sports?
December 3rd, 2012 at 11:28 AM
The PPP is not as relevant when you’re playing catch-up and have 3 min left in the game.

Can it be both?

ive said this before, but i think it’s a visual anomaly the taller you get. how can tim duncan make a bank shot from like anywhere within 12 feet of the hoop but can’t make free throws? i think it’s because these tall guys aren’t accustomed to putting that much arc on the ball, thereby making the target much smaller.

The Laker’s should have tied Howard’s salary to his free throw shooting. Maybe that would motivate him to practice his free throw shooting…

he needs to work on the part of his game that gets him two points instead of the part of his game that only nets one.
/dude still sucks offensively

postgames handshakes should go up earlier.
December 3rd, 2012 at 11:42 AM
I think that’s true. Still doesn’t change orly’s (O RLY?) point that he should practice though. Would probably help. weml

what the tall guys should be doing is practicing bank shots, not trying to shoot conventionally…and i think practicing free throws with a lot of arc could impact their post game techniques (provided they have them…won’t hurt dwight, i guess).

Underhand free throws. That’s the solution if you believe Rick Barry. I tried that once while hoopin’ (all slightly outdated semi-black phrases are property of EIC and no copyright infringement is intended) and it was awkward as hell. I don’t see how that can help. Granted I only tried it about 20 times before abandoning it.

I think FT shooting problems is mental than physical. Too much time for guys to think about it, instead of taking a shot in the flow of the game. Mix in that most big men do not practice long rang set shots, especially from straight on, giving them very limited foundation to rely on.
December 3rd, 2012 at 11:55 AM
Tim Duncan said that part of the reason why he really struggled with his FT a few years back was that he was taking too long at the line. Said that once he started to just get to the line and shoot without thinking, it became a lot easier for him.

just because he doesn’t make them doensn’t mean he isn’t practicing them.

File this under “D.Howard isn’t an elite player b/c he can’t make free throws” and “D.Howard is a douche”. These files are getting to be quite extensive.

His issues are mechanical. There is a hitch between his leg drive and his release. How this has persisted so deep into his career is quite an indictment. We need a Rick Barry “any pro that can’t shoot 80% from the line is an embarrassment” tirade.
