Louisiana Tech, 9-3, Will Not Be Playing in a Bowl Game
The NCAA granted 6-7 Georgia Tech a bowl waiver, ensuring one bowl eligible team was going to be left out. That team will be the nine-win Louisiana Tech, who were ranked much of the season. The Bulldogs needed an invite to a bowl, as the WAC had only one automatic bid. Depending on the source, the Bulldogs either turned down the Independence Bowl or were still considering other offers that did not pan out when the Independence Bowl jumped for Ohio.
“We asked the Independence Bowl to let the games play out because we were told by the Heart of Dallas Bowl and the Liberty Bowls that they were very interested in us,” said Van De Velde Sunday night. “They (the Independence Bowl reps) called us on Saturday and put a deadline on us. We thought there would be a spot open for us in one of those other bowls. We asked them to wait so we could vet out these other options, but they wouldn’t.”
For fans, it would have been fun seeing one of the top offenses in the country one more time. You feel for the seniors, but the school itself may be better off not playing.
Louisiana Tech would have lost money playing in whatever bowl game it went to. The option it turned down/didn’t have time to accept was playing Louisiana-Monroe, a half-hour down the road, in Shreveport, an hour and a half down the road in the other direction. It would be on TV, but that’s hardly a national branding opportunity. The Bulldogs should have more opportunities to fritter away money next year in Conference USA.

I don’t understand the reasoning why they would lose money on a game they could all put shoe polish on their cars and caravan down I-20 to.
December 3rd, 2012 at 4:41 PM
They could have been the toast of the town bro…you don’t worry about the cost.
December 3rd, 2012 at 4:42 PM
Lede on ESPN.com right now: “Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl isn’t being universally embraced. Don’t blame the Huskies for this BCS twist”
Good to see their not using their own people to drum up a controversy that their writers can then use as talking points.
JOURNALISM!
December 3rd, 2012 at 4:44 PM
Tickets if they don’t sell all of them.
Hotel room packages none of their fans will use.
Have to have the team stay in hotels for the week to be toasted by Shreveport.
Have to divide the payout with the other WAC teams.
December 3rd, 2012 at 4:46 PM
Hotel room packages none of their fans will use.
Louisiana Tech is like right by Shreveport. Most of their fans won’t require a hotel.

Congrats on discovering that journalism in general, and ESPN in particular, is bullshit.

the outrage among commenters so far in December is off the charts. You guys hate everything and everyone, right?
I’m glad the comments section is an outlet for anger, like a punching bag. just keep it clean. have had to delete a lot of comments today. maybe just a couple new rouge commenters, we’ll see.

Tax writeoffs? Obama be taxin’, y’all.

Clemson lost around 200k on the Orange Bowl, I think it’s generally accepted that bowls can be a big financial blow for schools ms.

Shouldn’t this be obvious?

Louisiana Tech is like right by Shreveport. Most of their fans won’t require a hotel.
But the school is still on the hook for some amount of rooms via block-booking, aren’t they? Or is it just tickets that they’re stuck with? One good thing to come from this: Sonny Dykes now won’t have to miss La. Tech’s bowl game because he took another job.

Are you referring to the comments in this post?

Better rouge than rogue.
December 3rd, 2012 at 4:50 PM
Sounds like what happened was other bowls were flirting with them and left them at the altar.
Losing money to play a neutral site game with ULM when you could play that game during the season and profit?

You know what I would do? Block fewer rooms.

have had to delete a lot of comments today.
I would buy a compendium of deleted TBL comments on the Kindle store for $1.99. I can’t imagine I’m the only one whose curiosity is piqued as to what blue horseshoe might have been typing that kept getting him on the wrong side of JMc

Don’t some coaches like the extra 4-5 weeks of practice?
Does it help with recruiting at all?

I would spend money on this.
December 3rd, 2012 at 4:54 PM
This is big. I’ve heard in the past that just that extra month of practice is huge for the younger players to get a step up on next year.
But let’s get the focus back on tickets.
December 3rd, 2012 at 4:54 PM
Maybe a lot of the rouge commenters would change their cum if they’d just wander up the page and click on that Kate Upton gif post from yesterday. That was fabulous work and only got 5 comments

being toast of the town > losing $
December 3rd, 2012 at 4:56 PM
but wouldn’t La. Tech likely lose more money by playing that game instead of a cash game against a BCS conference foe?
December 3rd, 2012 at 4:56 PM
Umm…Sonny Dykes isn’t coming back. Those extra practices would have been just makeshift prep for the bowl game.

I’d like to reiterate that if you put those in book form I would pay money for a copy.

Fair enough…but in most cases that seems to be what you hear from coaches.

Wonder if the school will pay the coach’s bowl bonus that is likely in his contract.

I’m glad I only understand a few of the TBL memes.

I don’t think any outrage/anger at this post is with the content or premise, so much as the lack of supporting evidence, which isn’t the first time that could be said about a post here.
I think there is genuine confusion on what the obligation of the school is to buy hotel packages. I don’t think they’d have a tough time selling tickets, depending what that number is. And I think we’d all appreciate a little x tickets – y unsold * cost vs. payout/#teams.

So Pittsburgh has always been higher in coaches poll than AP poll… basically ever since 2001 I think. Is that a trend with many schools, where certain teams just have more respect from coaches vs. media? Id be interested in a study on that.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:28 PM
OT: WWoS, I may have missed you mentioning, but how did the marathon go this weekend?
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:29 PM
Speaking of Caan and gunshots, there’s no way that tollbooth operator who closes the door and ducks down survived the shooting right? There were bullets everywhere, I’m sure a few found their way into his body.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:30 PM
You run marathons? Can you PLEASE explain their appeal to me. I don’t know any marathoners and I’d really like to understand
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:30 PM
It wasn’t a great race for either of us, really. Even got a little warm by the end, and the wife just missed her Boston Marathon qual time, sadly. Ended up coming home that night, so didn’t really get to go out and enjoy any of the city, either.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:31 PM

I’ve had this in the back of my mind for awhile. If he was in on it then he clearly didn’t get the danger he was putting himself in. If he wasn’t in on it then I’m not sure what good ducking behind a panel of plywood was going to do unless there was another door he crawled out of.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:32 PM
Dang, sorry to hear that. You and/or your wife gonna enter any other races in the near-term?
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:33 PM
They could’ve given him something in there to hide behind I guess. He survives in the video game.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:33 PM
Maybe there was a secret staircase inside the toll booth and he scrambled down it
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:34 PM
Just watched the scene again. The car would have protected him for the most part I think.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:34 PM
Moleman hates you. But I’ll answer anyway…
To me it’s kind of like golf. An athletic endeavor where you mainly compete against yourself. There’s also a surprising amount of camaraderie… you meet a lot of cool people that way, and it’s sort of a little ‘club’ where everyone is really nice and welcoming. It’s also good exercise (I hate working out, hate biking, and am a terrible swimmer) and I struggle a lot with my weight. It’s just very addicting, and the more you do, the more fun/easy it is.
Anything else I’d get into the annoying “runner’s high” or “seeing the scenery” pass type of talk, but it’s all enjoyable. I met my wife running, so it’s something we’ve always done together, and we got engaged on a run.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:36 PM
Oak Barrel Half put on by Jack Daniels is one we do annually in the Spring, it’s a really fun race. May do one in Birmingham, depending on schedule. We’ll run a few halfs a year, but I don’t think any more marathons for a while, just because the training takes up too much time.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:37 PM
If the dude hits the floor, I guess there aren’t a lot of strays that low. But damned if he wasn’t shitting himself the whole time.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:38 PM
Good health to ya and your wife, man.
Sounds pretty cool. On the engagement run, where did you hide the ring?
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:38 PM
If the dude hits the floor, I guess there aren’t a lot of strays that low. But damned if he wasn’t shitting himself the whole time.
He had to know something was up. The guy only collects coins all day and suddenly he drops one and chooses to close the door as a dozen tommy guns open up on the car at his booth? Too much of a coincidence to me.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:39 PM
One more in my long string of bloviation… I listened to the BS Report with Nate Silver on the way to work today, not a bad listen. As much as I’ve grown weary of Simmons’ schtick with his articles, I generally enjoy his podcasts (esp with Cousin Sal), and I actually think he’s become a fairly skilled interviewer. I wish he’d do one a day, to split over the commutes.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:40 PM
WWoS – been lurking on this one but I guess I missed the discussion about your race last week; did you do Vegas or a different one this weekend?
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:41 PM
Thought it was a great one – except Silver uses “right?” as a verbal crutch. Gets horribly annoying by the end
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:41 PM
Safety pinned it in the pocket, then folded the shorts back up in the drawer to avoid suspicion. Ran up the hill ahead of her, and took it out. Had some champagne hid off in the woods by the road for after. She didn’t look down though, despite me kneeling, so she thought it was a joke, and for a while didn’t realize that I actually had a ring.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:42 PM
Memphis half for me this past weekend, and my wife ran the full. A full marathon is just brutal… once every few years for me. Just takes too much time and health I don’t always have.
My wife on the other hand wants to keep training because she enjoys the 20 mile runs so much more than the actual race.

Ugh – I did Chicago this year and it ruined everything from about June-on. Have two Halfs scheduled for April/May; those are fun
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:44 PM
I prefer his podcasts to his columns now. Adam Carolla podcasts and Opie and Anthony shows on youtube are two of my other go to listens. O&A shows with Patrice O’neal, Louis CK, and Jim Jefferies are particularly hilarious. All highly recommended
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:46 PM
That’s a cool story.
As soon as I typed the question, I thought “I shouldn’t have asked that – too personal”. Thanks for sharing that, though.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:53 PM
That’s much better than my proposal in the graveyard. Hmm.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:54 PM
That’s great on Chicago… I’m not sure when I’ll be doing another full. Especially down South, fall marathons require a lot of training in heat which is awful.
Do you know what ones in April/May? Derby, Flying Pig, Country Music are all really popular ones, as is Pittsburgh which I did last year.
December 3rd, 2012 at 5:58 PM
Any runners familiar with the Manchester Road Race? It’s in CT on Thanksgiving morning. Local media always plays it up and claims it attracts some elite runners, but I don’t know if it’s known outside of a tiny niche group.

December 3rd, 2012 at 6:10 PM
I’d just heard of it this year, but it seems like a pretty popular race… 15,000 people. Definitely some pretty elite times there. That’s definitely pretty big for a glorified Turkey Trot, but some of the famous 5k/10k road races like Bellin (Green Bay) or Peachtree (Atlanta) or Bolder Boulder can get even bigger numbers. Those last two are upward 50k people, IIRC.
