Journalists can’t get a pass on this as it’s their job to write and know the language. That’s an initialism, not an acronym. An acronym spells a word, like SCUBA. Initialisms are like NCAA, they just use the first letters of the words they stand for.

I call bullshit on people using initialisms in the acronyms category on Scattegories all the time.
