Tennessee, Do You Want Underachieving Florida State Coach Jimbo Fisher?
Jon Gruden said no to Tennessee, and some Vols fans seem to think AD Dave Hart’s next target – make no mistake, Gruden was his top target, regardless of what you read – could be Jimbo Fisher, the underachieving coach at Florida State. With Fisher’s staff getting pillaged by Kentucky and perhaps elsewhere, it makes some sense that Jimbo might want to bail instead of stick around for another year in Tallahassee. He’s going to be losing his QB and a lot on defense to the NFL draft, but the Seminoles play in the lowly ACC and despite the losses would be favorites to win the conference again.
Is it harsh to call Fisher an underachiever? Perhaps. Seasons of 10-4, 9-4 and currently, 10-2 (with two games left) are very strong – until you dive deeper. Fisher’s only been at FSU three years since taking over for Bobby Bowden, but he’s reached two ACC title games and he’s 2-0 so far in bowl games.
Depending on how much you read into preseason polls though, Fisher has been a mild disappointment:
2010: Preseason No. 16 (AP), 15 (coaches)
2011: Preseason No. 6 (AP), 5 (coaches)
2012: Preseason No. 7 (AP), 7 (coaches)
Here’s where he’s finished each of the three years:
2010: 17, 16
2011: 23, 23
2012: Currently 13, 13
Not a fan of preseason polls? Neither am I. Let’s look at quality wins for Fisher. Everyone has their own view of what a quality win is, but the sake of this post, we’ll stick with rivalry games, bowl games, and ranked opponents.
2010: Beat 13th ranked Miami on the road, 45-17.
2010: Beat unranked Florida at home, 31-7.
2010: Beat 19th ranked South Carolina in bowl game, 36-17
2011: Beat unranked Florida in the Swamp, 21-7.
2011: Beat Notre Dame in bowl game, 18-14.
2012: Beat 10th ranked Clemson at home, 49-37.
The problem? Bad losses as huge favorites against vastly inferior teams. Or simply losing as a ranked opponent against an unranked foe. These cancel out all those quality wins.
2010: Lost at unranked NC State, 28-24
2010: Lost vs. unranked UNC, 37-35
2011: Lost at unranked Wake Forest, 35-30
2011: Lost vs unranked Virginia, 14-13
2012: Loss at unranked NC State, 17-16.
How is Fisher in big games against Top 10 teams? Again – it’s only been three years – but he’s 1-4.
0-1 lost to Oklahoma on the road 47-17 (2010)
0-2 lost to Oklahoma at home 23-13 (2011)
1-2 beat Clemson at home 49-37 (2012)
1-3 lost to Florida at home 37-26 (2012)
To be clear, I’m not calling for FSU to fire Jimbo Fisher. No way, not even close. My question – Tennessee is looking for a home run to make up for the Derek Dooley debacle. Everything I’ve heard out of Knoxville is they are not settling for anything other than a big-name coach. Is Jimbo Fisher that guy?
Tennessee is in a brutal spot. Want a retread like Al Golden? Weee! You can’t dip back into the mid-major ranks. Right now, I don’t think Charlie Strong would leave Louisville for Tennessee. My vote? I’d want Bo Pelini from Nebraska. He’d jump at the chance, since the scuttlebutt is he wants out. He’s got experience in the SEC (defensive coordinator at LSU), and even though it’s only the Big Ten, he’s done a fairly solid job in two years despite not having too much talent (19-6 heading into the Big Ten title game).

You just spent the entire post coming up with creative ways to minimize him and now you are wondering if he is a big-name coach?
November 30th, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Do you mean 1 for 4…as in a record of 1-3 (one win, three losses)?
/you only list four games, and you count them weird too
November 30th, 2012 at 4:01 PM
Preseason polls, as is pointed out every year, are stupid and are not a means by which to measure a coach’s value. Fisher has been great at Florida State but aside from going to a better conference what does he gain from going to Tennessee?
November 30th, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Tennessee?
Orange pants.
November 30th, 2012 at 4:04 PM
It was Clemson … so maybe it was a win, but really a moral loss? I don’t fucking know.

That would make me think he’s an awful coach if he can’t win more thatn 6 games in the awful big ten.
I don’t know if a big name coach wants that job. Too much to overcome.
November 30th, 2012 at 4:05 PM
Why would he want to leave? Great recruiting area and very easy schedule. They should win this conference most every year, only Clemson and Virginia Tech can really challenge them. (Unless you see Miami coming back which wouldn’t be anytime soon.)
He’s pretty much guaranteed an easy win in the Orange Bowl every year too as long as they win the conference. They’ll be playing either Louisville or Kent State this year. Sounds like an easy BCS bowl win bonus to me.

Are we not calling him Jumbo anymore?
November 30th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
As someone (cleet?) retweeted last night Louisville had a ton of Florida players. Now Miami is probably going to fucked for a long time, ACC is a much easier road to a National Championship, has a better team and better recruiting ground. Why leave? Just leverage for more money from FSU and go home and pound super peat moss tasting scotch.
November 30th, 2012 at 4:07 PM
Are we not calling him Jumbo anymore?
Long forgotten. Well done
November 30th, 2012 at 4:08 PM
Holy poop on a stick that Miami team was overranked. That game was in early October.
November 30th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
I don’t think it will be that long of a time. They just sat out two bowls so bowl ban should be minimal and they are very young so scholly reductions won’t hurt too much. But yes in the short term they are not going to be able to hang with F$U.
November 30th, 2012 at 4:09 PM

That’s really fucking stupid. The prevailing notion of FSU being even mildly disappointing the last couple of years is kind of stupid. Calling Al Golden a retread is really fucking stupid.
November 30th, 2012 at 4:11 PM
And how the fuck is Al Golden a retread? He was HC at temple and then at Miami. Besides, some goochlicker on twitter says he is in Knoxville talking with TN and then Miami confirms he has been down there all week.

Settle down Stark, we weren’t promised this to be a well-researched post so errors were to be expected

Tennessee would be better served hiring a ham sandwich to run their football program.

True. I should wait for the “Likelihood he’ll be hired” capsules before I bother.

Isle of Islay is the best.

Sad
November 30th, 2012 at 4:18 PM
FWIW, Jimbo Fisher seems like he pretty much IS Bobby Bowden all over again. The preseason rankings are just acknowledging that the program is on the cusp of being a monster again and sportswriters are, by nature, a bunch of frontrunners. Dammit, I liked it when The U/UF/FSU ruled the sport
November 30th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
Bo Pelini with a legit offensive coordinator would be a great hire.

Was drinking McClelland’s Islay last night, great price (for Canada).

and yet, the day after the BCSCG game you will come out with your first (of many) version of an awful pre-season poll.

That’s good. I enjoy Bowmore. Local store has two different Bowmore’s for around $30.

Firday Whisky discussion! Count me in! I like Talisker from the Isle of Skye. It’s got the peat character of a Islay, with a bit more complexity.

For Islay, Laphroaig.

It’s not an Islay, but Oban is also fantastic. I’m currently (well not currently, it’s at home in the bar and I’m at work still) Auchentoshan 12 year. Campbeltown scotches don’t get nearly the recognition they deserve. Though the fact that there are only three distilleries left there is certainly part of the reason.
November 30th, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Big time bullshit
November 30th, 2012 at 4:29 PM
Jim Tressel is listed as a 9/2 favorite for the UT opening. Others listed includes four current head coaches: North Carolina’s Larry Fedora (15/4), Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen (5/1), Miami’s Al Golden (21/4) and Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher (7/1).
November 30th, 2012 at 4:30 PM
Everyone beat me to the Laphroaig. Nectar.
November 30th, 2012 at 4:31 PM
Doubt UT’s gonna hire someone with 3 years left on a show cause.
November 30th, 2012 at 4:31 PM

Exactly. No freaking way Pelini leaves for Tennessee. Nebraska is loaded for the next few years to go along with better facilities, tradition, and overall program.

It worked out so well for Indiana when they brought in Sampson…
November 30th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
What’s going on at NU that Bo wants out of there so badly?
November 30th, 2012 at 4:38 PM
If Pelini makes a move, it’ll be after next year. I’m telling you right now, the Huskers will be legitimate national title contenders in 2013 with what they have coming back to go along with a very favorable schedule. He’ll either leave after winning something of substance. Or due to heat on him for not living up to expectations.
November 30th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
Texas, OSU, Bama, USC, Fla, UGA, LSU and whatever
November 30th, 2012 at 4:39 PM
Because I’m bored I’ll work off my own quote here…
Clear top 7 in no particular order: Texas, Florida, Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, Notre Dame, USC.
After that things get dicey.

November 30th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
Lol, seriously? Nebraska fan is really turning on Bo, after what they railroaded Solich and then suffered under Callahan? Bo was this golden savior from on high when he was hired, and not even 5 years later they’re already back to being spoiled brats again?
Nebraska football cannot fall of the map quickly enough. You farkers are going to end up being Illinois West, have fun with that.
November 30th, 2012 at 4:41 PM
What’s going on at NU that Bo wants out of there so badly?
Poor speculation from people that don’t live around here (Lincoln). Bo seems more at ease now than ever. And with the way the season has gone, fans are mostly positive with how things are going with the program. Of course that could all change with a flop tomorrow night. But I think NU will get it done.

People laughed when I had Texas A&M in my top 10 job, but I’d put that in there, Michigan, Penn State, and UGa.
My criteria was facilities, recruiting, and something else.

Nebraska fan is really turning on Bo, after what they railroaded Solich and then suffered under Callahan?
I never said that at all. Let’s just say fans have high expectations around here, just like they do for Kansas basketball. If the team struggles next year with what they have coming back, there will be a minority of the fan base that will be unhappy. It is what it is.

Depending on how the new Big Ten divisions align (if UM is put with OSU and PSU), Pelini could do nothing and rack up 10 win seasons, compete for the Big 10 title, and the occasional NC.
November 30th, 2012 at 4:48 PM
Obviously the PSU knob needs polishing in the wake of the Sandusky boy rapes, bt it will be college football blue blood in time.

I hate aTm, so I am probably biased, but if they are such a great job, why have they never accomplished shit? they will always be second fiddle to UT, even when they aren’t in the same conference. I hate OU as well, but I would put them in the Top 10 before I put ass to mouth on there.

November 30th, 2012 at 5:00 PM
I think conference realignment has shown OU is a second fiddle, too. A&M has surely underacheived, but the facilities and recruits available w/in 200 miles of campusm make it a bit of a sleeping giant. I also think the move to the SEC helpss them get out of UT’s shadow.

Jimbo is turning into a younger model of his predecessor. Great at recruiting and being a public face of the program, not wonderful on developing players (he’s been working with Manuel for five years now and some of his decision making vs. UF was HORRIBLE), and his in-game decisions are, at times, god awful. Even Andy Reid thinks his clock management is bad.
November 30th, 2012 at 7:11 PM
I wanna believe in Jumbo I really do, but given his talent pool to draw from and weak ACC opponents, he should be getting better results. Now he has a chance to put his coordinators in place. With his buddy Mus-Chomp having success early in Gainesville the heat will br turned up by FSU boosters.
