there is nothing Stern can do but act like an idiot.
November 30th, 2012 at 8:30 AM
I find it stupid anytime students rush the court or field. But when you think about it, these kids are in school for what? 4yrs? It’s not like they have an adequate context over what is a huge historical win.
Plus they’re drunk

“No, YOUR gear is week!”

As inviting as this sounds to watch while eating my breakfast, I’ll have to take a raincheck on this one.

No Duncan, Parker, Ginobili – Pop, you’re in trouble! –
there is nothing Stern can do but act like an idiot.
why does Stern care if a team rests their good players and loses? and they only lost by like 5 or 7. i don’t understand this.
November 30th, 2012 at 8:35 AM
Pug eating Peanut Butter.
Huh so this woman gives her pug peanut butter….
November 30th, 2012 at 8:37 AM
Think of the poor Miami fans who had to sit there and watch their Superteam struggle to beat a bunch of Spur scrubs, you heartless bastard.
November 30th, 2012 at 8:38 AM
No Duncan, Parker, Ginobili – Pop, you’re in trouble! –
Stern can bitch and moan all he wants and make threats but there is nothing that says Pop can’t do this. I just don’t find it that big a deal and it will be made one now because of the commish.
November 30th, 2012 at 8:38 AM
I think I might be saying that your haircut is played out, but I’m not really sure anymore.
November 30th, 2012 at 8:38 AM
Spurs did the same thing last year and I didn’t see any “significant sanctions.” Stern’s just pissed becasue it was the marquee game on TNT.
November 30th, 2012 at 8:40 AM
stupid lactose intolerant snake…the fuck were you thinking?

//fan interest is through the ROOF!!!!!
November 30th, 2012 at 8:44 AM
My take is that Pop was mad about the Spurs recent road trip of 6 away games in 8 days. He specifically chose the nationally televised game against another top team (Heat), to bench his best players. Stern doesn’t like to be shown up.
November 30th, 2012 at 8:45 AM

police find marijuana hidden in strawberries which they attach a completely made up fantasy-land number to in order to justify their department’s existence!
if weed were legal, 2,500 lbs of crappily produced pot would probably be a good bit cheaper than 2,500 lbs of strawberries.
November 30th, 2012 at 8:46 AM

November 30th, 2012 at 8:48 AM
…ok, maybe not. didnt realize strawberries were so fucking cheap.
November 30th, 2012 at 8:48 AM
well then, there you go. He isn’t wrong for wanting to protect his regular season game, and marquee matchup. He’s wrong about the way he went about it. He’s a jackass. Like they explained on TNT last night, the bigger game for the Spurs is this Saturday against Memphis. You can’t blame Pop for saving up his players coming off of 2 long road trips for that game.
November 30th, 2012 at 8:49 AM

“That implies costs of less than $20 per pound for high-grade sensimilla and less than $5 a pound for mid-grade stuff. Another way of looking at it, suggested by California NORML Director Dale Gieringer, is that we should expect legal pot to cost about the same amount as “other legal herbs such as tea or tobacco,” something perhaps “100 times lower than the current prevailing price of $300 per ounce—or a few cents per joint.”

Like they explained on TNT last night, the bigger game for the Spurs is this Saturday against Memphis. You can’t blame Pop for saving up his players coming off of 2 long road trips for that game.
Pop took another shot at the commish when he said he did this because of the Memphis game and then stated “Perhaps, it’ll give us an opportunity to stay on the floor with Memphis on Saturday night.”

i always love thinking of pot economy…the price hasn’t inflated in the decade ive been smoking, while both the demand and supply have skyrocketed.
much better to waste billions of taxpayer dollars than let people smoke a harmless bud that’s outrageously, preposterously renewable and cheap to produce.
November 30th, 2012 at 8:55 AM
it’s nice to see he’s so concerned with competitive balance in this league. i’ll have to remember this when the next batch of stars from small market teams hold a franchise hostage to go to LA, Miami, or NY to form.

Any hairless dog has to be in that conversation. But yes, the pug is detestable

My next door neighbor has 3 of them and they are way, way yappier and bark more than any dog I have ever been around. They never shut the fuck up.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
My opponent in a de-facto play-in game had Gonzalez and Turner, the only two people to do anything last night. Sucks.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:09 AM
This guy knows whats up.
Span for Meyer is a good move for both sides. Nats can slide Span into the leadoff spot, and if they resign LaRoche on a modest deal (2/24). The Span/Werth/Zimmerman/Harper/LaRoche top of the order will be really good.
Already clinched playoffs in all of my leagues, but Ryan doing jack shit annoyed me a lot.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:10 AM
The only thing that would make it bad, is if the 22 year old pitcher (Alex Meyer) they gave up turns into something special. I don’t follow baseball enough to know what people think of Meyer.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:10 AM
People not knowing the difference between accept and except is skyrocketing up the annoyance charts for me today. It’s reaching your/you’re levels.

Gary Williams would be an interesting NBA head coaching choice. Fantastic Xs and Os guy, but he got tired of the entitled attitudes at the college level I can’t imagine how pissed he’d get at NBA players.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
Matt Ryan appreciated Brees’ implosion, helped distract the masses from his dreck against the league’s worst defense…defintely getting a 2001 Bears vibe from this Falcons team only they have a better QB
November 30th, 2012 at 9:11 AM
Mixed opinions, but the prospect guys think he has upside of a #2-3 starter who will generate a lot of ground balls. But he’s very risky b/c of his arm slot.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
Affect/effect does it for me. I know it’s tricky but learn your homonyms, bitches.
“I could care less” is in the HOF, though.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:12 AM
Kentucky really, REALLY needs a point guard.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
if they resign LaRoche
Seems more likely that they move Morse to 1B and let LaRoche go.
/As an O’s fan, I’m a big fan of this and would be okay with the Birds overpaying for LaRoche (3/35). Plus defender, left handed bat.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
Ya know, philly, when you look at a healthy Phillies team, the Braves and the Nats, the NL East could be a dogfight all season long.
The Nats won’t miss Meyer much. I would want them to keep both Morse & LaRoche. But, if they can only keep one, LaRoche does give the lineup more lefty-righty balance.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
YES that one too! God damn people.
My boss says “I could care less” on a daily basis. He also says “far and few between.”
November 30th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
So that’s two games in a row Brees has lost the Saints after all the PERSONALITY bojacks wouldn’t shuttup about his MVP case.
I think it’s time we accept the fact he’s one of the two worst quarterbacks to ever win a Super Bowl.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:13 AM
I turned that game on for a second last night and Ryan had a 42.5 percent completion percentage and 67 yards. At home. In a dome. With Roddy and Jones. Against the worst defense in the league.
Cannot wait until this team loses its first playoff game.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
Yes, the future HOFer is the second worst QB to win a Super Bowl.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
I’m not typically one to bitch about other people’s grammar, but since we’re on the topic (and my boss isn’t in today)….my grammar pet peeve is “should of” instead of “should’ve”/”should have”
November 30th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
I think it’s time we accept the fact he’s one of the two worst quarterbacks to ever win a Super Bowl.
Yup, he & Terry Bradshaw. 2 worst to ever win a Super Bowl.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
You’re right, Dilfer is second, Brees is the worst.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:15 AM
their idiots, sportsgal. you’re best bet is to not let it effect you.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:16 AM
NL East will be good at the top, however I don’t think you should give the Phillies that much credit. They’re still aging fast.
If I were the Nats, I move Morse and try to get a prospect or two from a team that has a 1B need. The only issue with the Meyer move is that the Nats system is shallow now in terms of pitching.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:16 AM
(I obviously don’t fucking think that I just cannot stop laughing at the Saints fans)
November 30th, 2012 at 9:16 AM
The Phillies are going to be an also-ran unless they do something about that outfield.
And also, it would be great if Chase Utley could start playing baseball in April.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:16 AM
Bradshaw is definitely in the bottom five.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:17 AM

What’s UK’s scholarship situation? Does Cal have to offer based on projecting a certain number of NBA defections or does he leave himself some wiggle room?
November 30th, 2012 at 9:18 AM
I was starting to think by the end of the game that if he had gotten a garbage time TD to keep that streak going the night would have been viewed as a net positive
November 30th, 2012 at 9:19 AM

Saint Self shuttles underperforming and nonperforming players off into the ether and brings in a ton of potential. Rinse. Repeat. He already got rid of a kid this season under the guise of “concussion.” The man is a genius.
I think Cal just knows he is going to lose a bunch of players each year and will reload.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:22 AM
It’s more excusable than using an apostrophe to pluralize everything. I have no clue where it came from, but it’s an epidemic. I saw the other day someone wrote “familie’s” . So they know to change the spelling but still used the apostrophe? Fuck that.
Couldn’t find any on this thread though, so congrats on that.

Like an old gunslinger in a cowboy movie, I think they have one more good shot in ‘em. Maybe after ’13, they blow up the roster. With Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels, they have a puncher’s chance.
Yeah. Morse was a subpar defender in LF. I would miss his walk-up music (hearing the fans sing along in September was a highlight). He is a true threat offensively, though. In a trade, maybe the Nats can get a pitching prospect or two in return.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:22 AM
Absolutely the correct move there. More picanha and coracao do frango (chicken hearts). Just opened in Boston, BOOM
November 30th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
I know what he has committed/signed, I’m just curious about his methodology. Does he project to lose x number of freshmen to the draft? What if some of them are busts or don’t come out? Or does he not use his entire allotment of scholarships?

Doesn’t use the amount. There are only eight players on the UK roster who were signed as scholarship players I think, but a few have earned them or been transfers. If the kids projected to leave after this year do, he has ten for next year (minus the three commits).

But a Thursday night loss on the road against a division opponent, and now Brees is overrated? No.
I thought that was an obvious troll to not take seriously at all. I think Brees’ records are a little overblown because of the league style now, but I would never deny he’s a great QB.
Haven’t heard a lot of Ravens’ fans begging for respect for Joe Flacco though…
This. It’s contagious. I do it and have to quick change it before posting. It’s so easy to do, but that doesn’t make it excusable. God help her if I ever find Patient 0.

Stern is a powermad oaf … but can do little in this case. Pop was pissed over the scheduling inequities and he isn’t about to play Stern’s lapdog for a marquee matchup against Thursday night NFL. Hoorah for Pop. Double double for the immortal Matt Bonner.
Stern wants to preserve the myth that the regular season actually matters. But I bet the bookies went nuts about this.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:35 AM
He’s not overrated but for a month we were hearing about how Brees was having another record breaking (RECORDS PEOPLE IT’S WHAT MATTERS PERSONALITY) season and was single handedly carrying the Saints back into contention (nevemrind the absolute dogshit quality of wins: San Diego, Tampa, Philly, Oakland) and now that they’ve faced two quality teams in a row and seven picks later and 28 points off Brees turnovers sudddenly they’re not chirping.

At Pitt, 2001-2 was the last year of the Fieldhouse, before the Peterson (where it’s much harder to get on the court). In 2000-1, Pitt was terrible and I was literally the first student to get tickets for 2001-2, because I was so excited for Big East basketball. Pitt ended up being pretty good, and we beat a ranked (teens?) Syracuse team on TV for the first big win of that season, and rushed the court. It was fun.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:37 AM
Calipari already has five guys locked up. He’ll only take two more tops, he’s not bringing in a class of eight freshmen and all four and five stars, that’s not a good plan. Wiggins hasn’t reclassified yet has he? Parker will choose between Duke and BYU.

I think it is a great move. He is only 28, plays an average to above average CF depending on which D metric you favor. Hits for power, steals some bases and if needed to he could easily slide to a corner at the end of the contract.
Plus the Braves needed a good righthanded bat.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:41 AM

Y’all love OPS. He’s a .750 OPS guy with 2.5 WAR the last three years. I don’t know the marginal cost for WAR, but is that worth $15+ million, locked in for the next 5 years?
I’ll try to see what the going rate for WAR for CF is.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:44 AM

November 30th, 2012 at 9:46 AM
I think BJ Upton still has potential to reach 30 HR. He will never hit for a lot of average, but he’s a top 5 defender in CF, has good speed and will get to take advantage of the ballparks in the NL East (and the NL) which most favor right-handed power. He’ll slot in nicely in the Atlanta lineup that needed a right handed bat. Probably could hit 2nd or 5th. Also, Upton has put up 3+ fWAR 4 of the 5 past seasons. I thought Upton could get $17 mil honestly, so $15 per season is good for Atlanta.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:46 AM

It normalizes to $5.1 million per fWAR (I always use Fangraphs WAR), as do most players. However with baseball’s increasing money take, it might be time to bump that number up to $6 million.

Not a chance. Wrong personality for that game. He is happily retired. Very happily.
/I know something about this one
I’m not sold. He was in a contract year and didn’t exactly tear it up. He does a lot of nice things, but nothing spectacular. Years 5-7 will be a straight giveaway of cash. And I don’t think he’s worth $75m for the next 4 years.
He’s not a bad player. I just think that is a lot of years to give a guy that is pretty good.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:49 AM
Hahaha I was reading an analysis of the signing last night and it was talking at length about how his framing skills are second only to Molina, and then started the next paragraph with “Problem is, he’s not Yadier Molina.”

According to my calculations, Mike Trout had 10 WAR, and made ~$300,000. The marginal value of a single WAR is $30,000. So BJ Upton is worth $15,000,000 as long as he has 500 WAR this season.

Never got to rush the field. They put like 100 cops in each end zone with huge German Shepherds at the old Orange Bowl. A few guys tried after the F$U wins in 00 and 02, but that turned out bad for them.
November 30th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
He’ll slot in nicely in the Atlanta lineup that needed a right handed bat.
More what I was thinking. Stats may not line up but I have a feeling it will work out
November 30th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
Possibly wishful thinking but I like the Seahawks in Chicago so that plus wins at home against the Rams and Cards means they need to either beat SF in Seattle or win in Buffalo for 10
November 30th, 2012 at 9:53 AM
For me its using ‘and’ instead of ‘to’. Example:
I’ll try and see if I can make it that night
That’s two verbs, try and see. Try to see is correct
November 30th, 2012 at 9:54 AM
His does? Or all do.
Here is the top-rated CF for WAR. Upton was 15th, and last year had a “this is what I am” season… hard to predict much improvement beyond league differences. Seems a little pricey to me, but all free agents are overpaid, because you have guys like Trout skewing the $$/WAR value.

Upton is 14th in defense on fangraphs. Basically all data suggest he’s between the 10th and 20th best CF in MLB. Not a bad player, but if you could get Bourn for less…

November 30th, 2012 at 9:58 AM
Not surprised, but you’ve got to imagine it happening in Boone, police weren’t prepared. Happened three times when I was there.
First time was against Furman my freshman year, was at home for my birthday and a funeral sadly so I missed it but one of the funniest endings ever. Furman scores and goes up by one with seven seconds left so instead of kicking it they go for two for the three point lead. With seven seconds left. AND THROW THE BALL. Obviously, INT returned for two points, App wins with no time left.
Georgia Southern my second year, that was putting it through the bus, I was working a night job so I was passed out.
2005, first national championship season, beat Furman in the semis to get to the title game so we rush the field and take the goalposts out then march them both around campus. One goes in the pond, another across town. Cops ended up bringing out dogs to disperse the crowd but it’s Boone, there aren’t riot cops or dogs meant for that. The crowds freak out the dogs and the dogs start attacking the cops in front of us. Best thing I’ve ever seen.

Had his fWAR been converted to dollars for 2012, he would have made $15 mil. So, yes, $15 mil is in line with what his production is.

November 30th, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Was never a huge fan of Lion’s Den, just wasn’t my crowd, but we had school events there because the kid at the law school who was in charge of events was a huge fan. I remember one time he sent out an email warning everyone that while there for an event we were subject to the code of conduct or some shit.
Long story short he ends up getting thrown out for getting too drunk, ends up passing out on the living room floor of my apartment with his shirt over his head so I took a picture and sent it to everyone. Good times!
