Colin Kaepernick’s Parents Not Happy with Column Ripping His Tattoos. Columnist: “I’ve got two adopted African-American kids”
Colin Kaepernick, the 49ers’ new QB with arms full of tattoos, was the subject of a bizarre column by David Whitney AOL Fanhouse ripping said ink. At least one NFL player tweeted at Whitley that the column was racist; I wrote this. The column was so inflammatory that AOL added this tagline at the bottom of the column late Thursday: ‘David Whitley’s opinion is not reflective of the opinion of AOL, Inc.’
Kaepernick’s parents didn’t think much of it, either.
“It annoyed me,” Teresa said. “You are categorizing this kid on something like tattoos? Really? Saying other guys are role models because they don’t have them? Really? Some of these other guys don’t have crystal clear reputations. That’s how you’re going to define this kid? It’s pretty irritating, but it is what it is.”
Kaepernick’s parents noted that he had a 4.0 GPA in high school, has never been arrested, and “chose Bible verses and had them inscribed on his biceps.”
“This guy has probably never talked to Colin,” Rick said. “Instead of saying that Colin does all these great things and donates his time to children, this guy is going to make him out like a gangster. Really? I guess you just have to roll with the punches.
“Somebody asked me if I got mad about that. I said no. It’s just a guy and his opinion. I could have an opinion about him, but I’ve never met the guy, so I don’t know if my opinion would be right.”
Whitney’s reaction, in an email to the Sherman Report:
It didn’t occur to me that admitting I’m not a fan of body art would be admitting I don’t like African-Americans. I’m pretty sure the middle-aged women at the gym with barbed-wire tats that I referenced are white. So is Jeremy Shockey. If they were old enough to read, my two adopted African-American daughters would certainly be disappointed to find out I’m a racist.
On the bright side, Tattoo-gate II is apparently good for my social media standing. I’m not much on Twitter, but I picked up about 75 new followers yesterday. I hope they’re not all from San Quentin.

Sounds age-ist …and probably racist too

Is “I got two african-american kids” the new “but some of my best friends are black/hispanic/asian”?
November 30th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Again I don’t think the guy himself is racist. I just think he’s a shitty trolling writer with an indefensibly stupid position that people could easily take as having racial overtones.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:11 AM
Will there be a time when tattoos go back out of style?
I don’t have any, don’t want any, but I feel like my age group just missed the boat on this (I’m 30). My younger sister, though (27), is tatted up.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:12 AM

The biggest surprise for me in this was the news that AOL Fanhouse is still around.

I wish I could get a job like Whitley where I could throw out unsupported generalizations based upon a superficial understanding of the subject I’m criticizing. “The CEO image” is apparently defined solely by being 100% tattoo-free. Because tattoos are at the root of corporate malfeasance, apparently. I could say more, but Whitley is so clearly off-base here it’s a waste of time.
/Fully-sleeved, knuckles and chest also tattooed.
//Not a CEO
///But I am a Ph.D. and an educator
////so fuck off, Whitley.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:19 AM
tattooing’s been around for a long ass fuckin’ time. they were confined to soldiers and sailors in the 19th century for the most part (aside from cultural tats like the maori’s and japanese), but as we’ve seen upward social mobility become easier, is it really that big a surprsie to see them become more culturally accepted in the modern west?
i dont see it as a fad at all.

Pretty much. How you can write a piece like that and NOT think of how it may be interpreted is beyond me. Also the guy wrote a line like “finger in the dyke” without a trace of irony so his cluelessness is well-established.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
No one plays the race card like White people. This guy takes it to the next level. He went out and adopted 2 of them to flash anytime he gets cornered. That’s brilliant.

November 30th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
I mean that’s the point in the end. I can’t judge him, maybe he’s not at all racist, maybe he’s not racist with black girls but is with black guys. I have no idea. But to dismiss reasonable concern for the racial overtones of this article is just stupid. Asking us to understand what he means, when he compares a kid that he’s obviously done no research on with prison felons is his fault not ours.

That’s not funny.
Yeah, that is a bit too much of a blanket statement. I’m really only thinking of stupid people who get stupid tattoos in this case. I understand and have seen legitimate, even inspiring ink on people. But that’s the minority in my opinion.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
If I could give advice to anyone thinking about getting tats, just make sure you can cover them up with clothing if needed to. As someone who is involved in the hiring process, two potential employees, even in all respects, but one has a visible tattoo. Guess who gets hired?

November 30th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Personally I think the only tattoos that are bad are the ones that are poorly done. But sometimes, my concept is challenged.

much like smart people in general, to be fair.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
* breaths through mouth, then says *
For me, it seems like a lot of people get a tattoo to mark a specific point in their life. A snapshot of what they’re going through at that moment. I understand that. But, in my topical examples of the Latin phrase or the song lyric above, what happens when you’ve overcome the obstacle or no longer hold the maxims tatted on your arm to be special, or applicable?
I think my criticism is much more narrow than you’re giving me credit for.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
then we all get to point and laugh…im not seeing the downside here.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
Hey my “Spring Break Myrtle Beach ’92″ tattoo says fuck off pal.
Two of three of my tattoos specifically relate to my childhood and things from the past, I think that’s a better way to go than say the inevitable person that has an Avett Brothers tattoo.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
i guess “evolving” doesnt include being open minded and at least entertaining ideas that don’t correspond with your own.
or being a stickler for details
/licks eyebrow, picks knuckles off floor
career high, that saddens me, that an employer would judge a candidate on tattoo visibility, unless position is public-facing
November 30th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
True. Which is why I think the “fad” evolves and the tattoo craze dies down. For a while, tattoos could still be unique and people could be unique for having them. As more people get them, the uniqueness is lessened and therefore, in my opinion, the commodity. A really smart person with a really original tattoo may not be easily distinguishable from the idiot up the street with the arm sleeve of tribal tats. That would kill my desire to get one and the cycle ends.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:37 AM

November 30th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
this i agree with, but in a different way, i guess…doesn’t it say something about someone who gets a really elaborate, well done tattoo that they’re able to do due diligence and do research before making a lifelong commitment? i see that as a positive.

It’s funny but you’re right, looks can offset a tattoo for women. For a man, no so much.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Having tattoos has consequences. Certain people will see them and immediately think you’re cool for having them. Others will see them and be repulsed. As long as you know what impression you’re giving and can live with that, have at it.
Tattoos are a very overt form of expression. They make an impression quicker than just about anything. But less and less these days, too. I’m not a proponent of tattoos, but frankly I’ve been watching Kaepernick play and it’s not something that even registered as noteworthy. But I’m a little younger than Whitley.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
e.g. my sister has a big light bulb on her forearm. She has convinced my parents that the reason she got it is because she loves science, and they HATE that. I know the symbolism behind it and it is applicable now, but not so sure she’s going to enjoy retelling that story in 20 years.
I’m not trying to be offensive. I admire the commitment and I’m sure those tattoos serve as beneficial symbols for you. Again, I wasn’t trying to speak to everyone with my point of view.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
He just got ‘em so he can make black jokes.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Oh I follow.
I mean I think tribal bands and razor wire are fucking ridiculous, but then I don’t know if those symbolize something to the person who has it beyond the connotation that I see of “tool!”
Or in the words of Todd Barry:
“Oh that’s a nice tattoo, what is that, a smiley face?”
“It’s not a smiley face; it’s a police sketch of the man who stole my baby.”
November 30th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Even Atlanta doesnt care about Georgia Tech, its all about the DAWGS!!!
November 30th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
I completely agree. But when so many people have them nowadays, I think the specialness of the process is lessened. That’s why I’m saying the fad dies down. Tattoos will always be around, of course, but maybe not as predominant as they’ve become recently.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
I guess what I was trying to get at was young people’s attitude towards tattoos or anything for that matter, with respect to appearance. Obviously, tattoos have cultural significance to many folks, but I doubt the guys I went to college with that got fraternity letters on their arm did that for cultural reasons.
I guess I just don’t understand anybody getting too worked up over somebody else’s tattoos or hairstyles or anything like that.

I don’t even know at what rate they are becoming more popular, but I would wager part of the reason is that they’re easier to get access to now (a lot more parlors than there used to be) and for artists it’s becoming a more and more viable way of making a living, because frankly it is art. I mean mine are all relatively simple but my artist is amazingly talented and paints and draws as well, and then turns them into pieces she puts on people. Also the fact that technology has gotten better in terms of screening and regulation standards have gotten better that make them safer.

If I didn’t know better and someone asked me to guess the year this statement was written, I would have guessed 1995.

I am heavily tattooed, college graduate, very good job. White people are the fucking worst, so narrow minded, always taking offense at other peoples choices that have no affect on them.
Also, Caepernicks tattoos are ugly, but in no way should this asshat be making a big deal out of it.
November 30th, 2012 at 11:59 AM
I hid my tattoos from my dad for over a year because I knew he would complain about me spending money on them (even though I got them for free). His first response – after complaining about me spending money on them – was “you’ll never get a job.” Yeah dad when I goto an interview rocking shorts I’m probs not getting that job anyhow, chief.

nice…all good choices.

My buddy is a member at DAC. Said it paid off for them since SMU apparently built a $5MM practice facility or some such at DAC, and is now gonna move out.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
that one’s a possibility.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Spencer – you see SMU is going to build a new “US Open” worthy golf course?
did not…who’s designing?
johnny miller played a round before the Illinois Open one year. i went to ask him a question as he got in his cart and he told me to ride to the next tee with him. one of my questions was, ‘who designed this course’ as an aside. he said I think Darth Vader!

My tattoo is a memorial for one of my best friends who passed right after graduating high school. It is something I pondered for nearly 2 years, before finally going through with. I knew I wanted it in a spot not visible with a shirt, so I got it on my rib cage, about 18 inches total in length. Kinda looks like this, with his nickname on a tombstone in front. It will never lose meaning/value to me.

Yep. They just finished it a few years ago too. This is a cool that built a top-flight NCAA tennis facility five years ago and then almost immediately tore it down to make room for the Bush Library. The Tennis Center is now in a different part of campus altogether.

White people are definitely narrow-minded, but I don’t know if we’re any more so than other races. My experience with Asians tells me no.
Novak, I always assumed you were white, and of course picture you looking like Djokovic.

So true. But you have to admit that that is kind of a ridiculous waste of money, construction materials and time.

alert…i am going off memory, and did not look this up
fighter escort following a plane of dead folks, incapable of doing anything to save people or stop it from crashing, unless it was headed for collateral damage, right? then it would have what, blown it up?
November 30th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
I am white. My experience with other whites has caused me to dislike them all. Honkies!!!
I look like Novak if he had a beard and gained 40 lbs.
OT, I’m going to Houston this weekend, can not wait to hit up Mai’s, House of Pies, and Niko Niko’s
November 30th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
This is pretty much why I don’t have any tatoos. I like the idea of them, but there’s nothing that I feel so strongly about that I would want on me for the rest of my life.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Yup, the worst part of my whole broken wrist thing was when they had to inject a painkiller into the fracture before it could be reset (which registers #2 on this list)…I’d have to be put under before getting a tattoo
November 30th, 2012 at 12:11 PM
They escorted it until it crashed, they let it crash because they knew where it was going to land – and wouldn’t cause any damage.

And a portrait of Frank Zappa on his back.
did you see what the horrible Gail is trying to do now?
November 30th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
It feels nothing like a shot or needle jab though.
In high school I used to sell blood plasma for beer money (classy) and that required sitting with a big needle in my arm for two hours. Didn’t bother me, but I knew what needles felt like. Was terrified of the tattoo gun, but it felt nothing like a needle, it’s just a burning feeling. Honestly the only time it hurt was when my legs fell asleep because then it just felt weird, or when it was on bone where there wasn’t any meat underneath.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
right mole. if it would have had enough fuel to crash into residences or offices, they would have done what?
November 30th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
Wasted existence.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
best way to describe tattoo needle pain is that yes it hurts but it doesn;t get worse, and if you sit long enough, it become like background noise. now, i hear there are more painful places, like closer to bone. tats on the ass must not hurt
November 30th, 2012 at 12:15 PM
Honestly no idea what the policy is there. I think they would have shot it down anyway, fuel wasn’t an issue, it was on autopilot and it only crashed because it ran out of fuel but because it was still on autopilot it crashed at full speed and made a yuuuuuuuuuuuuge crater. Were it going to be in a populated area I presume they blow it out of the sky.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:16 PM
Good choices. Mai’s burned down a coupla’ years ago. I haven’t been since it was rebuilt, but heard one negative review. Niko Niko’s is an institution. Never been to House of Pies, though I do know that the gheys frequent heavily enough that it’s referred to as “House of Guys”.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Confirmed. Bottom of the fibula = ouch.
My artist does her own tattoos (that fact amazes me, and I guess it’s fairly common, but I’m not worried about someone’s hand steadiness if they can do it to themselves without jumping) and did one that covers the top of her foot. Cannot imagine how she stomached that without fucking it up.

i dig donating blood. the sight of it (the darkness of it always shocks me), followed by cookies and juice
went to mexico and costa rice two summers in a row, one of them was just before 9/11. they wouldn;t let me donate blood because of possibility of what i picked up in oaxaca
November 30th, 2012 at 12:20 PM
Plasma donation is a funky process. The blood comes out and fills up this series of tubes and goes through centrifuges that separate the plasma, which is clear, then the red blood cells are put back into your vein. Chased with a liter of saline, which let me tell you, is the oddest sensation I’ve ever experienced. It’s the ultimate York Peppermint Paddy feeling.

the guy doing mine had a buddy hand him a beer that was all shook up and overflowing. i just smiled, thinking this was the way to do it…venice beach, tattoo artist drinking, some lady came in with a ferret on a leash

like chugging ice water on an empty stomach? so cool feeling the cold inch down the pipes
November 30th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
Kind of, except you feel it coursing through your veins.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:24 PM
I can’t quote HTown’s post cause of crappy mobile site, but yeah I have been to Mai’s since they rebuilt. It’s still really good.
I actually tried to go the day after it burned down, not knowing it had happened. I get there, and it was gone. Crazy.
House of Pies is like crack. I also wanna take my wife to Marfrelas for public makeout time.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:27 PM
what major are they playing in Dallas in the summertime in the heat? None.
It’s still great to get a new course. The byron course is hated so they can poach that asap if they can square up with the non-profit that runs that tourney.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:30 PM
Isn’t stopping them from next year’s Open at Pinehurst, where it’s horribly humid and will be in the upper nineties.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Had to google that place. Hadn’t heard of it.

When I had appendicitis two years ago they couldn’t do an appendectomy right away because my appendix was too inflamed. So they put a medical drain in my side. For three weeks there was a tube with a small plastic reservoir on the outside and a needle attached to my appendix on the inside with the tube going between my bottom two ribs on my right side. I had to flush the tube with saline twice a day. And I can tell you that the feeling of liquid going into your side and spreading around inside your abdomen is about the weirdest sensation you can possible imagine. It also opens up the possibility of Jesus jokes.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
yeah the last 2 at pinehurst were cool weather. Dallas avg’s about 94 degrees in mid-june. modern greens might help like they did at AAC.

Marfrelas is cool. Low key, low lighting, great drinks, quiet, and they have all these rooms with different “themes” like a school room, stuff like that. Notorious makeout (and more) spot.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:43 PM
It’ll either be 85 or 95 at Pinehurst, the former will feel cool but it’s a crapshoot in June in the Carolinas.
I’d rather be in Dallas, at least you’ve got a city full of AC near you.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:44 PM
There have been plenty of US Opens and PGAs played down south, which is dumb in my opinion. I am partial to the northern courses though, Augusta excepted.
November 30th, 2012 at 12:48 PM
Looking forward to the 2016 Open here where it’ll be 90 and everyone chokes from the pollution. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm yeah.

If you knew nothing about someone, double sleeves is a data point everyone of us will factor into coming up with a preliminary first impression in lieu of more information.
Now should that be the basis of a national sports column? certainly not. although on macro terms such stereotypes are usually correct, on an individual basis however there’s always the distinct possibility the label doesn’t fit.
If anyone of us walked into a doctor’s office and a lab coat wearing, middle aged guy with neck tats and a lip ring shows up instinctive judgments will be made and it wouldn’t be because you’re a horrible person… which you might be anyway but not due to your pre-judging here.
November 30th, 2012 at 1:21 PM
This is where we’re talking tats? I just got my second one: fleur-de-lis on my left pectoral. I got a gaelic word on my back, essentially right behind it. My wife just added an upper-sleeve tattoo of a 40s pin-up girl and our two dogs. I may add something else to me if/when we have kids.
November 30th, 2012 at 1:23 PM
Plasma donation is a funky process.
if you do this in the winter, you will get very very cold. Because they put cold stuff back in you.
After some numbnuts stabbed me in the arm vein, and then resettled the needle just sitting in my arm while my artery bled into my own body (while I told him that’s what was happening, and he didn’t believe me) I said fuck you to people who need blood.
I’d rather be comfortable. And I’ve got plenty-o-cookie-money
