Kirk Ferentz Believes His Coaches Are “Not a Bunch of Dumbbells”
Iowa went 4-8, looking for the most part depressing and incompetent. Kirk Ferentz is not one for “rash decisions,” like throwing a pass on third down. With eight more lucrative years left on his contract, he can afford to take the long view with his coaching staff.

Ironic since dumbbells almost killed some of his players a couple years ago.

Honestly asking. I work with an Iowa super fan and need new material to burn him with.

Provided you are not an Illini fan…his sorrow should be enough.

These words are all English but when put together in this order I have no idea what they mean.

How can we successfully rip on Iowa football without SC here to witness/argue/concede the comments made…
Did Ferentz win the Big 10 coach of year again?
November 29th, 2012 at 4:09 PM
Had a runner-up (maybe 3rd place) Heisman finisher 10 years ago.

As the lone Iowa State commentator (albeit very limited basis), Coach Rhoad’s visible passion makes Ferentz look as old and tired as his program has become.
And the University of Iowa just seems lazy for not making the move. Reminds me of the San Diego Chargers’ brass and the handling of Turner.

None. The Orange Bowl win over an admittedly unimpressive Georgia Tech team got him the “lifetime” deal.
They’re looking at 6-6 next season if they are lucky. A 2 win improvement would probably save Greg Davis’ job. Kirk certainly owns his share of the blame, especially since Davis was his hire. Think if you survey most Hawkeye fans they would rather see Davis go first and give Ferentz a shot at redeeming himself before eating his buyout. Trouble is, he’d just bring in another guy just like Greg Davis. Ken O’Keefe wasn’t all that different.
Rough times for Iowa football.

The announcers were slobbering over him last Saturday, saying he was one of the best, most respected offensive line coaches in the game.

For a few years he was building reputation of the new Nebraska of the Midwest — supplying the NFL with high-quality offensive linemen.
I guess that’s still carrying in certain NFL circles.
November 29th, 2012 at 4:13 PM
Oh man I forgot they hired Greg Davis. That’s amazing.
November 29th, 2012 at 4:17 PM
His style would probably be more successful in the NFL. He’s not all that different from Jim Tressel. Field position and defense. Takes very few risks. Is not creative in the least at a level where creativity, especially on offense, is the new wave for winning. Especially at schools where you’re not recruiting top flight talent.
He’s also coaching at a program that is probably the 5th or 6th “best” football school in the conference right now. Sharing 2 Big Ten Titles and getting 2 BCS berths in 6 years meets the expectations at Iowa. His last three years have not met expectations, especially the losses to ISU and Minnesota.
The Chargers don’t have 8 years left or a $20M buyout with Norv Turner. Once the ESPN Playoff money kicks in and the extra B1G Network revenue, perhaps they’ll cut ties if he continues to perform at his current rate.
November 29th, 2012 at 4:19 PM
There already is one…it’s called Nebraska.

That’s a good point. But the University of Iowa coffers aren’t exactly empty.

They want to renovate Carver in the next few seasons to add seats. Iowa basketball is drawing more interest than Iowa football right now. It’s not much different than when they remodeled Kinnick. Iowa football was on a high, boosters were willing to shell out money for the $91M (I know, I solicited those donations… people were basically picking up the phone with “How much?”) to update the field. They feel the same way about McCaffrey right now and Carver is a dump. I think it’s the smallest arena for a public school in the B1G for basketball.
Barta is just like Bowlsby. They run it like a business. Can’t say I blame them considering their constituent base and the lack of a pro team in the state.

Ah yes Nebraska. From the Native American word for ‘buffalo’s vagina’.
November 29th, 2012 at 8:51 PM
False. I’ve been here for years. On an even more limited basis as of late, however.
