My problem with the article, however, is that, wittingly or unwittingly, it presents and perpetuates a classic false equivalency between the countless benefits of Adderall and the potential dangers – ones inherent in many prescription drugs. Full disclosure: I’ve taken Adderall for years. I credit it for quickly enabling me, a bartender and long-time college dropout when diagnosed, to complete my undergraduate work then earn a master’s degree from Harvard University.

As a quick “for example,” whenever I hear of Adderall’s addictive potential I always think of the main problem I and many like me have with the drug – remembering to take it! Last I checked, forgetting a substance was not a big criterion for addiction. In truth, clinically speaking, Adderall is safer than aspirin. This fact is seldom if ever mentioned, whereas the “dangers” always are.

Of course Adderall is sometimes, perhaps often, abused. But this doesn’t diminish its potential benefits for those who truly need it. Overemphasizing Adderall’s dangers and potential for addiction not only stigmatizes a safe and excellent medication, but also the millions who legitimately rely on it.
Finally, for what it’s worth, I would like to say that of all the benefits I gain from this medication (too numerous to mention in this format) none appears to be at all relevant to my physical abilities. True, I am no professional athlete. But as an inveterate, compulsive runner and gym rat, I would expect I’d have noticed any boost. If only!
