Mack Brown Tried to Recruit Robert Griffin III and Johnny Manziel as a Defensive Back and Safety
Mack Brown and the Texas Longhorns will wrap up a mildly disappointing season Saturday against Kansas State. The Longhorns were considered a Top 15 team in the preseason, but played embarrassing run defense (despite having three players who will go in the first 64 picks in next April’s draft) this year, ranking 105th (201 yards per game) out of 124 teams. Also, their QB play has been poor, an issue that has plagued the team since Colt McCoy graduated.
A loss to Kansas State would drop the Longhorns to 8-4; if they lose a bowl game, that’d be 8-5 and the Longhorns would almost certainly finish the season unranked, the third year in a row that has happened since losing the 2009 BCS title game to Alabama.
Brown, 61, probably doesn’t have to worry about his job yet, but if he struggles again next season, maybe. One of the many knocks against Brown is identifying talent. If Johnny Manziel wins the Heisman trophy, Brown will be known as the coach who tried to recruit the 2011 and 2012 Heisman trophy winners – as defensive backs. Brown wanted Baylor’s RG3 to play in the secondary, and he thought Manziel would make a fine safety. Technically, Mack Brown didn’t even offer Manziel a scholarship:
“Two things about Texas,” answered Smith, “No. 1, Johnny dreamed of playing in Austin. He absolutely loved Texas I guess from when he was a little kid. If Texas had offered him a scholarship even as an offensive lineman, he would have taken it.
“Texas offered nothing. I’ve seen it written where they offered as a DB, but that’s not true. Johnny would have gone, believe me.
“But the second thing is to give a lot of credit to Duane Akina [Mack's assistant head coach and defensive backs coach]. Duane worked it hard. He became totally convinced Johnny was a quarterback who could play at that level. He really wanted Johnny.
“When it comes to recruiting, of course, Duane had to then sell Johnny to the offensive staff, and in the end, to Mack. He couldn’t make that sell because Johnny didn’t fit the dimensions. I know they regret it now, but Duane is off the hook, for sure.”
[UPDATE: No, Texas and Mack Brown didn't technically offer Manziel, But Texas recruited him as a defensive back. Former Texas coordinator Will Muschamp confirmed this.] Griffin, another Texas high school star, was thought to be an “athlete” by Mack Brown.
“Texas did not recruit me as a quarterback,” Griffin said. “But they walked into my [high school] coach’s office and placed an offer on the table as an ‘athlete,’ then walked out, so I never saw them.”
Here’s a link that claims Brown wanted Griffin as a receiver. Ask Texas columnists, and they say Brown wanted Griffin as a defensive back. It’s basically a running a joke.

(despite having three players go in the first 64 picks in next April’s draft) this year,
Wow. Come on, Jason.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:20 AM
I’m honestly surprised Mack hasn’t been fired yet.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
coach’s office and placed an offer on the table as an ‘athlete,’
Perhaps he could have gone there and majored in “sports.”
November 27th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Hook ‘em.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:21 AM
Sounds like he correctly identified a hole in his team, but had trouble filling that need.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
My only argument would be that our QB play has been poor. Ash has 17 TD’s and 7 Int’s and played with rib troubles last game which obviously affected his throws. He’s ahead of Landry Jones and just a smidge behind Collin Klein in passing efficiency.
I’m tempted to root against my team against K. St. in the hopes that it might bring about a coaching change, but I just can’t do it.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:22 AM
I’m honestly surprised Mack hasn’t been fired yet.
This isn’t soulless Auburn where they whack a coach that boug, er, won a national title. Say what you will about Texas, but they are loyal.
jk. This is why.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
*our QB play has NOT been poor.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:23 AM
Texas columnists are not allowed to joke about Mack Brown.
Impressive.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:25 AM
(despite having three players go in the first 64 picks in next April’s draft)
Impressive.
I guess this means Jason has a flux capacitor.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
Ha.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
In fairness, absolutely no one saw this type of season coming for Manziel.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:26 AM
KC – they don’t?
2 DL, safety are all going to be early picks.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Probably because the team’s website is http://mackbrown-texasfootball.com (seriously).
November 27th, 2012 at 11:27 AM
“Texas did not recruit me as a quarterback,” Griffin said. “But they walked into my [high school] coach’s office and placed an offer on the table as an ‘athlete,’ then walked out, so I never saw them.”
I thought the story was that the didn’t want him to run track, and they thought he would stop playing ball in college to concentrate on track.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
Garrett Gilbert.
David Ash.
Casey McCoy.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
Two quarterbacks from my hometown have been recruited to Texas only to have been changed into “athletes.” Mack has a history of this.
/I guess they all do.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:29 AM
KC – they don’t?
2 DL, safety are all going to be early picks.
It is the way it is written. It is like you went forward in time and came back to tell what happened. Perhaps I’m nitpicking.
despite having three players go in the first 64 picks in next April’s draft
November 27th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
I’m already tired of hearing about Johnny fucking Football.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:30 AM
And their women are better looking than ND and Boston College.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
barring a scandal Mack won’t get fired. He’ll “retire.”
November 27th, 2012 at 11:31 AM
It is the way it is written. It is like you went forward in time and came back to tell what happened. Perhaps I’m nitpicking.
I’m with KC. I had to reread it a few times to see if you were talking about last year’s draft. I didn’t realize that the TBL R&D budget had been funneled into a time machine rather than m.thebiglead.com.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
McNeal
McGee
Johnson
Tannehill
Manziel
Texas A&M has been great at recruiting but only recently have been developing these guys. McNeal should have been better than Vince.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
I assume you’re talking about Okafor, Jeffcoat and Vaccaro. I would assume Jeffcoat’s injury will make it less likely that he comes out.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:32 AM
lol. Ash is pretty good, he’s had some bad games but he is not like the others on that list (one of which was terrible and the other of which is non-existent).
November 27th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
Hank Williams Jr. wrote a song about that.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:33 AM
i dont see what’s wrong with it…they currently have the players that are likely going to be picked in the first two rounds. he just was confident in that assertion.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
Texas has 1 senior D-lineman on the roster.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:34 AM
He still holds the record for the fastest 40 run by a QB at the combine. Ever.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:35 AM
Yep can’t do it, and you don’t feel great about it if it happens. Had that experience when Randy Shannon lost to USF at home, blowing a 14 point lead to backup freshman QB.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
i dont see what’s wrong with it…they currently have the players that are likely going to be picked in the first two rounds. he just was confident in that assertion.
Saying “likely to go” is a little different than making it seem like you are pulling information from the Sports Records book you picked up in the year 2015.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:36 AM
i dont see what’s wrong with it…they currently have the players that are likely going to be picked in the first two rounds. Spencer
But it hasn’t happened yet. I know he is confident, but what if say, there was only 1 DL that goes?
November 27th, 2012 at 11:37 AM
i tihnk he changed it since KC commented…the one i was reading said “who will go in the first 64 picks.” i might be working off of a new version.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
In fairness, absolutely no one saw this type of season coming for Manziel.
aggie fan saw it coming, just ask them.
has there ever been a heisman field weaker than this years?
November 27th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
Seems like Mack is back to pre VY level coach – manages to lose 3 games and get blown out by OU. You could see it with VY, but how Colt McCoy was able to continue that success was odd.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:38 AM
YOU CAN’T DIVIDE BY ZERO.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:39 AM
the year mark ingram won?
November 27th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Clown has arrived! Juniors can declare for the draft.
So, Mack missing on QBs?
November 27th, 2012 at 11:40 AM
How much is USA Today making off of Jim Rome?
November 27th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Hey mole, any particular reason why you blocked me from following you on twitter? Honest question.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Dude’s lettuce is out of control these days
November 27th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
Maybe not, but not close to the standard it should be at.
Recent QB’s from Texas that Mack couldn’t/mostly chose not to land; Luck, Dalton, Griffin, Manziel, Tannehill, Stafford, Ponder, Kolb, Foles, McElroy.
His quarterback analysis has not been what you’d call competent. Or remotely close to it.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:41 AM
the year mark ingram won?
it was weak, but this year is just bad.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
Speaking of time travel, I actually watched Jesse Ventura’s conspiracy show last weekend and apparantly the government has been using time travel for military purposes for DECADES, people!
/kind of confused why 9/11 still happened
November 27th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
I’d take the opposite tack – Mack only hit on 2 QBs (OK, 1.5 QBs). He also used to have a rushing game before going a VY/CM spread.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
I’d say he is terrible after watching the games against TCU, and Kansas. He shouldve been pulled at halftime against TCU, maybe they couldve won the game.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:42 AM
aggie fan saw it coming, just ask them.
I’d rather not.
By the way, you sick of Phil Bennett as the DC (K-state game notwithstanding)? I swore I saw him and Briles get into it on the sidelines earlier in the season.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
it happens…dont see why a blue chip like texas would take two substandard QB prospects when they have their pick of the litter either. so texas missed…they’ll get another 5-star and try again. lesser programs like atm and baylor dont have that luxury.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Opens whiskey, proposes drinking game around the words “dick, face, twitter, fuck, ugly.”
November 27th, 2012 at 11:43 AM

It has changed. Flows much better.
Hey mole, any particular reason why you blocked me from following you on twitter? Honest question.
Ruh roh.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Luckily, I don’t think that is going to affect the outcome a whole lot.
Count me in this camp. I was a big McNeal fan all through college, and was consistently disappointed.
Speaking of disappointing, I watched a little bit of MNF last night. Cam looked surprisingly good, but seemed to always be avoiding pressure. Is their offensive line that bad? Does he have to roll out that often, or just do it because he can’t make reads from the pocket and roll-outs simplify the throws. I just can’t remember a play where he dropped back, set, and made a read/throw, but haven’t seen enough to make any judgement on where the blame lies.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Only one person recruited RGIII as a QB – Art Briles when he was at Houston.
Manziel was an Oregon recruit and signee from Day 1.
Getting sick of all of the “UT didn’t recruit QB X who starts at College Y” stories.
Do folks think UT can offer 10 QB scholarships each year?
Don’t folks realize once there’s a big-time recruit signed, other stud QBs go elsewhere?
Mack and the entire country that recruited the #1 HS player Gilbert completely WHIFFED on him.
That’s all. Two NFL QBs prior to him. Mack has had 3 in total.
Ash/McCoy is a stop gap until 2013.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:43 AM
Texas DLineman in the NFL? No thanks.
/history’d
November 27th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
that makes me laugh, but on the other side of the coin, there’s this former CIA operative, a deadly serious guy, who swears up and down that there is a UFO conspiracy. that one makes me think…he doesn’t come off as a blowhard like ventura, which obvs helps.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
I don’t think I knew mole was even on the twitter.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Anyone good?
November 27th, 2012 at 11:44 AM
dude was top 5.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
shaun rogers had his moments…at times he was unblockable.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
I did not know this. I read that he has re-enrolled at A&M this year though. He’ll be coaching there soon.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:45 AM
Manziel was only rated a 3-star and was the 14th ranked dual-threat QB coming out of HS. Can’t really fault Brown there. #7 on that list is Jamal Turner who is currently playing WR for Nebraska as they have their QB, a guy who was recruited as an “Athlete” out of HS by the way.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Say what you want but Colt was a great college QB.
I don’t think any Texas fan would dispute this.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
How many if you don’t count Colt McCoy or Vince Young?
/snickers
November 27th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
I love that show. It’s hilarious. Such fascinating characters.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
agreed with all of this.
frankly, lloyd carr going with drew henson over tom brady is far more egregious than not recruiting a sprinter or midget to play QB at a top 5 program.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:46 AM
Only one person recruited RGIII as a QB – Art Briles when he was at Houston.
nobody wanted him, but it’s only Mack Brown’s fault.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Wish I could link to a video of the Cantina Bar Pig Man saying “He doesn’t like you”
November 27th, 2012 at 11:47 AM
I didn’t either until I saw a reply to Sepinwall earlier and was informed that was Mole.

I like all these comments exonerating Brown’s incompetence because he took players rated higher by recruiting services. That’s a good philosophy. Just take the highest rated player so you’re ass is covered. In the meantime other schools can snag half of the best QBs of the last decade from what’s supposed to be his turf.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:48 AM
I have absolutely no fucking idea, honest answer. If I had to guess I would probably say me being drunk and blocking Hawks fans during their cup run?
November 27th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Gilbert’s letdown has had a crazy trickle-down effect. Of course CMB should’ve known that a 6’4″ Gatorade National Player of the Year, two-time state champion would suck at the next level.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
Not disagreeing, just that his success is almost inexplicable.
/Chance Mock over Vince Young FTW
November 27th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
This is the same logic people use to say “31 teams passed on Tom Brady”…
Yeah… including the Patriots, multiple times. I’m gonna guess that if BB thought Brady was going to be even a decent starter, he wouldn’t have waited till the 6th round to get ‘value’. Sometimes everyone just whiffs, and one of those teams (aTm, Patriots) gets lucky for whiffing slightly less.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:49 AM
He was ranked just below Ash on Rivals, I believe. I don’t really fault our staff for missing on him. He’s a unique talent. You have to really credit Mike Sherman and/or his offensive coordinator (don’t remember who that was) for that one. And Sumlin, I guess, for recognizing it and not rushing Matt Davis or giving the job to Showers.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Ohhhhh. That makes sense. FYI I thought your reply to Sepinwall was hilarious today.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Braxton Miller was voted 2nd string All Big 10 as QB, but also Offensive Player of the Year. Makes sense.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
Rooting for Texas so Oklahoma can win the Big 12 (again).
November 27th, 2012 at 11:50 AM
A lot has been made of this bit of Michigan history. From everything I read back then it was simply an issue of neither distancing himself from the other at practice, and Carr really wanting to keep Henson away from baseball. Henson was more athletic and had a better arm, but Brady was able to work inside the system more.

November 27th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
we’re not exonerating his incompetence…we’re saying baylor and atm lucked out.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Also the same logic as “this guy was ranked the second best player in the country at his position, HOW DID HE FLY UNDER THE SCOUTING RADAR?”
November 27th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
Naw, this is only fair after Mole was sad Banders blocked him.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:51 AM
I’d say something about Urban swiping J.T. Barrett out of Texas. But he got injured.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:52 AM
I cant even remember what your handle is. I wish twitter had a feature where it listed the people you have blocked.
Also when I saw your question quoted I figured it was from Jason and figured I was fittina be hammered.

November 27th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
Texas DLineman in the NFL? No thanks.
Hampton, Casey
November 27th, 2012 at 11:54 AM
Didn’t know he’d gotten injured. There was a lot of discussion on some UT football sites about taking him instead of Swoopes (who had an absolutely disastrous senior season this year, making it look like we may again have whiffed on a QB choice).
November 27th, 2012 at 11:55 AM
And TCU with Dalton. And Luck with Stanford. And MSU with Foles. And Alabama with McElroy. And Houston with Kolb. And FSU with Ponder. And Georgia with Stafford.
My question to Texas fans: How many times can other schools “luck out” before admitting Brown has created a mine of top tier QB’s for the rest of the country to feast on? His leftovers are the true gems.

I do love that so many of the “nerd” comedians resort to the standard bullying of “you don’t have any friends, FAG.” Him and Benson are horrible for that.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
that wasnt bad at all…mallett wouldnt have fit in his offense, but denard robinson SURE as hell did. seems to me like that was a great bit of scouting from rich rod.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:00 PM
I’m not saying Miller didn’t deserve the award, but he’s inaccurate as hell
November 27th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
Also I’m pretty sure it’s Dirt’s fault that Aaron Nagler blocked me. Oh well.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:01 PM
There isn’t a single B1G QB this year that will ever take an NFL snap as a QB. Now thats sad.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Henson was Brady’s backup for two years. Brady started every game at QB when the two of them were at Michigan.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
But Martinez went to the Manning camp!!!!
Just passing along a fact I’ve heard about, oh, a million times during Nebraska games this year.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:02 PM
had a few nice passes against OK STate earlier this year.
this isn’t just about whiffing on RG3/Manziel. plenty of guys miss.
it’s also about thinking those 2 guys could make good defensive backs.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:03 PM
he’s no less accurate than mcgloin only braxton can actually do other things too.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:03 PM

Also I’m pretty sure it’s Dirt’s fault that Aaron Nagler blocked me. Oh well.
i made you make a blowjob joke at his wife’s offense?
November 27th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
They probably could. They are instinctive and athletic.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Well the Big East is officially turning into Conference USA 2.0. Tulane is set to join now in all sports. Fucking Tulane.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:05 PM
Has to be one more recent than Kerry Collins, right?
November 27th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Todd Blackledge?
November 27th, 2012 at 12:06 PM
All Big 10 teams make no sense this year – Mewort and Norwell were the best LT and LG int the league – Lewan included. The Wisky dude wasn’t good. Shazier left off for Borland, Roby robbed…
Oh well, make the case for Meyer as Big 10 COY as he hadd nothing to work with.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
Rich Rod would’ve won 10 games last year.
Oh and Braxton will be a much better passer next year. He’s got all the tools. Hell he went 14/18 against the great Michigan D with 2 throw aways and a dropped pass.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
Uh…nope. 1995
November 27th, 2012 at 12:07 PM
I think you made a joke, all I did was add an ‘ewwwww’
November 27th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Jake Ryan got robbed.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
how do you know they couldnt have been good DB’s?
Marshall Faulk told the story of his college recruitment in a documentary. He said he got recruited by every major school in the country, all the biggest names. And not a one of them would consider the possibility of him playing running back. He was a shutdown corner.
And that’s why he went to San Diego State.
He probably would have been a great corner.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
Well it wasnt Tom Brady, Six QBs went ahead of him. As ESPN has informed us over and over again
November 27th, 2012 at 12:08 PM
robbed by being first team all-big?
November 27th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
To think, Brady and Brees go outside the first round while bums like Cutler and Stafford are top-15…SEC bias ruining football at all levels these days
November 27th, 2012 at 12:09 PM
can i now say how absolutely STOKED i am that dude’s gone? thanks for running him out, michigan fans! right when he was about to go plaid.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
I think you made a joke, all I did was add an ‘ewwwww’
the guy’s no good anyway. Was my joke that his wife swallowed a whole bunch of potential followers, so his night was a net loss?
I really only miss Bill Barnwell, of the people who have given me the old curb kick. But I’ve found some nice football writers who watch the games, and say things, and respond to questions.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:10 PM
Hey CJ, I think I got blocked by that skank in the bee costume Hernia retweeted the other day. She replied and then suddenly her reply was no longer in my feed.

Tatum-Woodson Defensive Back of the Year: Micah Hyde, Iowa
November 27th, 2012 at 12:12 PM

I heard Brees dropped to the second round when he blew his interview. One Assistant GM asked him what the fuck that thing on his face was, and he got mad.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
In all fairness, Mark Richt recruited Cam Newton to be a TE. So the precedent was already set by a slightly less old and stale coach.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:12 PM
Yes, the system was run, run, run, run until we have a 4th quarter lead and then play shitty prevent defense.
Got a link to that? Because that never happened.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
@#$%^&
November 27th, 2012 at 12:13 PM
Urban Meyer’d have another NC or 2 if Cammy Cam wasn’t a drug using thief.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Haha! I didnt expect her to respond. I’m sure she loved the attention.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
I followed her. She seemed nice.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
I thought Llloyd Carr told him to transfer, no?
November 27th, 2012 at 12:14 PM
/fixed
November 27th, 2012 at 12:23 PM
For Spence:
Your 2012 Big 10 DB of the year: Micah Hyde, Iowa.
Yes, Roby was robbed.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:31 PM
Poor Texas fans having to put up with Mack Brown. Mack should’ve retired after that NC title game with Bama and handed the keys over the Muschamp.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:35 PM
milk steak…oh i thought you emant on the first team all-big ten team. whatevs. we beat michigan! urban fuckin’ meyer! yeehaw!
November 27th, 2012 at 12:36 PM
Am I the only one that thinks Kurt Sutter blatantly ripped off the character of Clay Morrow from Jim Henson’s Emmett Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas and the character of Chuck, leader of The Riverbottom Nightmare Band?
Alan, given your history with Kurt Sutter, I understand if you don’t feel comfortable confirming.
November 27th, 2012 at 12:37 PM
I don’t know where I am!!!
November 27th, 2012 at 1:22 PM
To be fair, Manziel’s own coach (Sumlin) did not offer him either.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Mack is a dope.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:28 PM
This is news? Everyone missed out on these 2, not just Mack Brown. And that’s what makes them recruiting gems. Much like Purdue getting Drew Brees out of Texas.
I love your college football recruiting posts. So terribly off the mark.
November 27th, 2012 at 5:25 PM
I think this really only proves that coaching up 3-star recruits that develop and grow is much better than getting all the 5-stars you can and just letting them do their thing.
November 27th, 2012 at 5:32 PM
im fine with 5-star braxton miller, thankyouverymuch.
