Some serious recency bias going on here. Bill Polian had a lot to do with the Bills reaching four Super Bowls, the Panthers being the most successful expansion team ever, and building a defense out of spare parts that, while never great, played to the team’s strengths better than any other approach would have.

Ultimately, it wasn’t Polian’s drafting that undid his Indianapolis tenure, though that his work from 2007-2011 was noticeably worse than 1999-2006, it was choosing the wrong players to lock up with big contracts. Bob Sanders was always going to have a short self life, tremendous as he was. But guys like Gary Brackett and Kelvin Hayden didn’t offer much upgrade over their replacements, and their contracts compared to their games played were cap nightmares.

Anthony Gonzalez would have been a fine pick, but injuries derailed his career. Tony Ugoh and Mike Pollak were both disastrous misfires. Donald Brown is a good player who would be great in an Alex Gibbs scheme, but miscast in Indianapolis, just as Jerry Hughes was prior to the team’s switch to a 3-4 scheme. Polian built his teams like the Miami Heat, a few stars surrounded by replacement-level talent who were made to look better than they were thanks to Tony Dungy and Howard Mudd’s schemes and coaching and Peyton Manning’s presence as the greatest blemish cream in NFL history.

Bill Polian isn’t the greatest GM in NFL history, but he also didn’t “lose it” overnight. He’s just a huge prick who hates the media, and they hated him right back and once he was fired the giddiness of the Indianapolis Star was overflowing and still filling column inches to this day.
