Carolina is a More Attractive NFL Coaching Opening than Philadelphia Entering 2013
Last night, two teams that are on a march toward next season put their play on display for all to see. The Eagles and Panthers both are likely to have new coaches next year, for different reasons. For Philadelphia, the end of the line almost certainly is here, as Andy Reid is in his 14th season. The team has now lost seven games in a row, and it has been almost a decade since the Eagles made a Super Bowl appearance. For Carolina, GM Marty Hurney has already been fired. Ron Rivera could be retained by a new GM, but has he really done enough to demand that a new GM keep him on rather than start fresh? His team has repeatedly underperformed and failed in key spots, and his decision making has played a role.
In addition to those two, three other jobs seem likely to be open this offseason. In Kansas City, Romeo Crennel looks inept as the Chiefs now have the worst record in the league. It’s his first full season in Kansas City after taking over, but more often than not, coaches who look this bad in year one don’t get another opportunity. Last Sunday’s loss to Baltimore would appear to be the final straw for the Norv Turner era, though he has survived so many that its hard to fully declare him gone. Finally, Cleveland, like Carolina, has a new decision maker, and Pat Shurmur hasn’t done enough to merit another year.
Fans in other venues will surely cry out, but those are the five most likely. Which would be most attractive to a new coach? Several factors come into play here, existing personnel, especially at quarterback, cap room and roster flexibility, and the ownership and expectations.
1. Carolina Panthers: I’m putting Carolina #1. They’ve underperformed in close games. That’s something that is notoriously fickle. They’ve got a young quarterback with a team-friendly contract in place. The expectations and media crush isn’t like Philadelphia. Sure, the defensive back end needs additions, and the receiving group will need an upgrade soon as Smith gets older, and the offensive line can stand some adds. Those are areas that if a new GM can handle, a coach has a chance at a quick turnaround.
2. San Diego Chargers: How attractive is having Philip Rivers in place at quarterback at this point? The Chargers are a worse team than they were three years ago, Antonio Gates is aging quickly, the outside targets have been a problem until Danario Alexander has emerged recently (but he’s always a few games away from an injury, talent never the problem).
3. Kansas City Chiefs: This ranking is dependent on Scott Pioli being gone too. With him there, this job is dead last because who wants to be his third hire in five years, and then trust the man that stuck with Matt Cassel forever to make a quarterback call? Now, for the positives. There is some talent on defense. The quarterback situation is a black hole, but the cap space is there, and you will likely also have the #1 pick and options to address it. If this was last year, it would be the #1 option given those factors, but a true franchise passer this year is not as clear at the top of the draft.
4. Cleveland Browns: New ownership, and a pretty good base of talent on the offensive line, and at running back, and in certain defensive positions. You have to immediately make a call at quarterback, but money doesn’t prevent you from bringing someone else in and having Weeden at back up.
5. Philadelphia Eagles: This would have looked like a great job two years ago. After Juan Castillo was jettisoned, the defense has just looked worse. The Eagles finally went “play for now” mode on defense, signing several players now over 30. It hasn’t worked. The offense has dropped to 31st in scoring, unfathomable a few years ago. The offensive line injuries will bounce back. Michael Vick has to be gone, though, and Nick Foles isn’t the answer. In this market, where fans are spoiled by success, will a new coach get time for the rebuild that needs to occur after a long run, while comparing them to the Redskins and Giants?

False.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Addendum – Jeffery Lurie is cheap and Howie Roseman is an awful, accountant GM that will never max out the cap. I agree with this list.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Man, Lisk just won’t give up on the Panthers and his man crush on Cam
November 27th, 2012 at 1:43 PM
Call me crazy, but the Browns should be #2 on this list; with KC, PHI, and SD tied for last.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
i disagree, but what do i know…i watch the browns on tv, not a spreadsheet.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:44 PM
There is no doubt that Rivera’s idiotic coaching has made a difference, and that a coach looking to make waves could probably have the biggest impact in Carolina.
However, that team still has a lot of problems and I can’t see the ceiling for them over the next two seasons topping eight wins.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:45 PM
Have to say Dallas will probably open up as well, especially with another loss to the Skins.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:46 PM
Who makes a shirt for a Bears-Eagles game in 2011 and why would anybody buy it?
November 27th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
I thought it was a funny shirt. Beavis = Jay Cutler
November 27th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
More importantly, why are Beavis and Butthead on it?
November 27th, 2012 at 1:48 PM
I don’t think Lisk necessarily means to dump Weeden. I think he means a new coach would immediately have to make a decision, one way or the other.
But what do I know, I just started watching football in 2001.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:49 PM
South Philly’s finest
November 27th, 2012 at 1:50 PM
When a team that has never in its existence posted consecutive winning season and has one of the cheapest owners in sports and is saddled with horrible contracts from the previous regime and plays in a nonexistant market is the top job opening, you probably wait a year if you’re an aspiring head coach.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
Also still wouldn’t shock me one bit if Cam packs up and gets out after his contract is up. Would be the smart thing to do. That line will get him killed and he’ll never be as big of a star as he could be in that market.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:52 PM
If there was a Super Bowl parade, surely I missed it. It was a good run, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say Eagles fans are “spoiled by success”.
There are certain things a new coach can do, right away, to ingratiate himself with the fan base. The first of those things is to beat Dallas.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:53 PM
Nick Foles isn’t the answer.
As I mentioned this last night, try to trade for Alex Smith….
November 27th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Where would Detroit rank on this list?
November 27th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
If you disagree with the Eagles being last, besides my point, here are the areas that need to be addressed:
Quarterback
1 Wide receiver (only one WR taller than 6’1″ and it’s Riley Cooper)
3-4 Offensive Linemen
Special Teams (have not had a kick return go further than the 32 yard line this season)
2-3 Defensive Lineman
2 Cornerbacks
Safety
Inpatient fanbase
Cheap Owner & GM
Have fun.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
I have (drunkenly) purchased more of those $5 bootleg t-shirts in the parking lot after sporting events/concerts than I care to admit.
They do make fine dust rags when I sober up, however.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:54 PM
Cleveland is always last. Because Cleveland.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:55 PM
Curious to see this same post around this time next year. The Lions job should have candidates lining up around the block.
Can’t disagree with Carolina being #1 based on personnel going forward. Need to jettison one of those RB contracts though.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
Eagles fans are upset with you, Lisk.
I, naturally, agree with you.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:56 PM
When I was a teenager many years ago, buying those shirts outside of concerts was standard operating procedure for me. Sadly, my Ozzie & Alice Cooper shirts are long gone.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Don’t think you’re crazy. I’d put the Browns at #1. Not a believer in Newton AT ALL.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Very confused how you can say Kaepernick is the answer in San Francisco after one game while Nick Foles isn’t after a couple games. Foles is playing behind a worse offensive line than Jay Cutler currently.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:57 PM
Not me.
I just don’t agree with his characterization of the fan base as “spoiled by success”. He’s quite right about the other things.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:58 PM
What a twisted little world you live in.
November 27th, 2012 at 1:59 PM
A coach can always ignore Nick Foles’ performance in games this season and instead focus on his glorious pre season stats I had to keep hearing about. Those stats would obviously make Philly the premiere destination for any out of work coach to consider.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:00 PM
Where would Detroit rank on this list?
Dallas and Detroit would both rank higher than any team on here, while Buffalo would rank lower if they can Gailey. The Chiefs are a blank slate type thing, if Pioli’s gone. If someone wants most flexibility to make their own mark, it’s KC. QB situation sucks but has run its course money wise, no long term damage anymore there. Lots of cap room (because owner cheap). Eventually, they have to spend to cap floor when that provision kicks in.
Also, the Jets situation is the worst if I am a prospective GM candidate. Worse than Philly. Lots of bad contracts, and bad QB contract that makes it unattractive, and would have to probably commit to working with Rex.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:01 PM
You’re right. I’m not sure you can judge Foles behind this o-line.
That said, whoever the new guy is going to be is probably going to have his own ideas about who he wants as a QB. That’s why I think Foles might possibly not be the answer next season (even though he may turn out to be a decent QB elsewhere, given his pedigree).
November 27th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
Short of a 2-14 season next season or the death of old man Ford, Schwartz is going nowhere. Ford stuck with Wayne-O and many others way past their usefulness. Not to mention Millen, who was not useful for a single day.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:02 PM
much like incoming coaches usually have to do. he’s slammed weeden regularly, and i can’t hate him for it since his consistent method of evaluation would support that assertion…i just think there are variables that have to be accounted for, and in light of those, weeden has done exceptionally well.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
I am definitely not upset with this ranking. Read my list of areas that need to be addressed Jason. Eagles are in store for multiple years of top 10 picks in the draft. There is so much that needs to be addressed.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:03 PM
I just don’t agree with his characterization of the fan base as “spoiled by success”. He’s quite right about the other things.
spoiled by success not meaning Super Bowls, but always being competitive and “in the running”. The Chiefs were the same way even though they never actually won anything, until about 5 years ago. It was always fun to go to games because we were at least a competitive team for like 20 years.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
mike tomlin coached the HELL out of the steelers last sunday. everytime they cut to him, he was waving his hands around like a windmill. im surprised he went back to mendenhall and didnt start giving the ball to LB’s to prove his macho MANBALL point.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:06 PM
Vick and Jackson contracts were debacles. Short of Chris Johnson, these are two of the worst contract decisions in recent NFL history.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:08 PM
was talking eagles with my uncle who lives in philly over thanksgiving…he HATED on joe banner so much, it got a lil ridiculous. as he was ripping banner, i asked him “would a joe banner run team have giving emotionally-reactive contracts to vick and jackson?”
probably not. yea…those were some bad, BAD deals.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
You’ve obviously not heard of Marty Hurney.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:09 PM
Fuck that Nazi. I’d axe Schwartz and Mayhew. I’d go throw money at Michael Lomardi to be the GM and not sure who’s available for HC.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
wait wait wait wait wait wait wait…
MARK SANCHEZ CONTRACT EXTENSION.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:10 PM
Short of Chris Johnson, these are two of the worst contract decisions in recent NFL history
That’s a bit of a reach. Yes, last year was an abomination, but he’s on pace for a decent year this year behind a line still trying to improve from the embarrasssment of the first part of the season. And I think most people view part of that contract as a reward for the past performance, right or wrong
November 27th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
yea…the architect of the post-gruden/gannon raiders is the guy qualified to put the lions over the top.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
Cowher?
November 27th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
I’m speechless.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:11 PM
Vick and Jackson contracts were debacles. Short of Chris Johnson, these are two of the worst contract decisions in recent NFL history.
let’s see. neither of those was even the worst one that team did in the last two years
And the Sanchez extension is the clear winner. Worse than the Kolb deal + contract. And Mario Williams hasn’t earned 1/10th of this season’s whopping salary.
Oh, and since we’re recent memory, how about Haynesworth?
November 27th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
Not interested in Lombardi at all.
Hell, he’s probably already put his resume under the wind shield wiper of Jeff Lurie’s car. He lives in the Philly area.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:12 PM
see…he was coming off of two dominant years. i cant put that all on the skins.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Playing devil’s advocate, Spencer, regardless of the arm strength difference, Weeden’s numbers are probably slightly worse than Colt McCoy’s were. A case could even be made that Weeden (who is older, obviously) has had more weaponry with Richardson as opposed to Hillis.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:14 PM
Polamalu will play maybe four more games under his remaining deal but god fucking forbid anyone question Colbert.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Get ready for an impossible to prove point but….Johnson has to be on pace for the most garbage time yards in NFL single season history this year. A lot of big runs once games were already out of hand. And if the pay for past performance is true, that makes the contract even worse.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:15 PM
Colt McCoy sucked and continues to suck. If you want to talk weapons…Colt McCoy had a top 5 O-line.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
Lots of teams guilty of this with their faces and stars that they drafted. Bears gave Brian Urlacher an extension at age 32 with 2 years remaining on his deal. Hard for teams to walk away from their guys.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:17 PM
No, those deals have Andy Reid and Howie Roseman’s stink written all over them. Joe Banner is responsible for bringing in Jon Runyan and other smart signings early in the Andy Reid era.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
Get ready for an impossible to prove point but….Johnson has to be on pace for the most garbage time yards in NFL single season history this year. A lot of big runs once games were already out of hand. And if the pay for past performance is true, that makes the contract even worse.
were you not watching the titans in his 2000 yard season? All those yards were garbage time. They started 0-6 that year.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
But it’s Albert Haynesworth. Effort and a team first mentality must be the two biggest considerations in giving a long contract. That is why I was so critical of the Johnson and Jackson moves. Aside from overpaying drastically for the type of players they are, those are two people I would never lock up long-term
November 27th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
They gave big time money to Nnamdi Alphabet when they already had 2 corners on the roster. That is what you call a debacle. At least the Eagles offense has the injuries on the offensive line and the playcalling of the corpse of Andy Reid to blame. What is the excuse for that defense?
November 27th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
He doesn’t even have the worst C. Johnson contract…Charles signed a 6yr/$72M deal with a $30M signing bonus…not guaranteed money over the life of the contract…$30M check for writing down the letters in his name.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:18 PM
that’s exactly what im saying.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:19 PM
Furthering the anti-Johnson contract argument.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:20 PM
The biggest reason to be against Johnson’s contract is the fact that he’s a runningback.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
Colt McCoy sucked and continues to suck.
Having watched the Browns, Colt is an ideal backup QB but not a starting QB in the NFL. As a starter, he would stay in the pocket for exactly .5 seconds before bailing to a ill-designed rollout and maybe completing a 3-yard out to a TE. Despite having “all the intangibles” he pouted about his coach, had his daddy constantly bitch in the papers for him, and he couldnt read defenses worth shit. There were tons of sacks where he couldnt audible a play to match his protection scheme. This usually resulted in him being slaughtered and then it being the OL fault.
Weeden, although learning, stands in the pocket and looks downfield. The book is definitely out on Weeden to be an above-avg QB, but there is zero evidence to think McCoy is in any way better. NONE.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
1. AGE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH A QB WHO IS NOT AND NEVER WILL RELY ON HIS ATHLETICISM THAT ALREADY DOESNT EXIST…STOP THIS STOP IT FUCKING RIGHT NOW.
2. it’s simple football strategy re: mccoy vs. weeden…with mccoy, you can keep your safeties 15 yards from the LOS. with weeden you cannot. with weeden, you have a CHANCE against teams like PIT and baltimore.
and it has to be mentioned that mccoy held onto the ball FOREVER all last year…great idea for a dude with no arm strength. the difference is the raw browns WR’s are dropping the balls weeden’s getting to them, throws that mccoy couldnt make even if he wanted to.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
That signing was a joint Joe Banner/Howie Roseman deal. Although I think Lurie was spooked that Nnamdi was going to Dallas, so he pushed through that move. Still was an awful move. They could have easily signed Tulloch instead of Nnamdi and their defense would have been much better last year.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:21 PM
Yes, the AAV isn’t actually that bad…it’s the back end when he is useless that it becomes a problem.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
How about the Cardinals opening that will be available after they lose 12 straight to end the season? Really only need to clean up the O line and get a QB to be in contention in the NFC West.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:22 PM
This is probably the worst part for many of Eagles fans I know. The way the defense has kind of rolled over.
Philly fans have dealt with offensive ineptitude before. Having it occur on the defensive side of the ball is kind of new.
/brings up YouTube clips of the House of Pain game
November 27th, 2012 at 2:23 PM
They should trade Fitz to Minnesota as a joint “Thank you and we’re sorry” move.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:24 PM
Dallas and Detroit would both rank higher than any team on here,
at some point, people are going to realize dallas just does not have that much talent.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:25 PM
You do a deal for a guy like Nnamdi when you have just that one hole on your defense to plug and you can have a championship level defense.
I don’t think “one player away” is how I would describe the Eagles defense of the past few years.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:26 PM
The Nmadi (sic) deal wasnt so bad. Perhaps Philly should of had an actual defensive coordinator to scheme and utilize him.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:27 PM
Before the Eagles got Demeco Ryans, I could swear that there were 3 commenters on this site playing starting linebacker for the team.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:28 PM
I’d put that list CAR, CLE, then the others. CAR has Cam, which if the proper coach and OC could get through to, is awesome. CLE has a very very good youth core that will make a HC successful. KC is a complete rebuild but there is shit QB in this draft. SD anbd PHI need to be blown up and that is not what you want as a new HC. You want young talent or a high pick to land a potential franchise QB.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
No it is not. Really, the blame can be pointed solely at Reid/Roseman/Banner for letting Dawkins walk. That was the straw the broke the back of the Eagles defense. Dawkins would inspire the guys and made sure they gave everything. Who now on the defense does that? I say bring him back as the DB coach in the next coaching adminstration.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:29 PM
I don’t know if that’s true or not. I do know that in baseball, historically there is an age at which players’ performance begins to erode statistically. In baseball, it’s around the age of 27. To say age has nothing to do with anything is silly. Clearly there comes an age when there is a fall off. I’m not saying Weeden is there yet, or even close.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:30 PM
2 1sts and a 2nd, or 2 1sts and 2 3rds and you git a deal.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:32 PM
Non-mobile QBs can maintain their level of performance well into their 30s.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:35 PM
I don’t make those trades if I’m Minnesota.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:38 PM
QB shelf life is about brutal hits taken. I’d agree with Spencer and say this isnt a major concern about his development. Weeden has to address his accuracy and continuing to eliminate the few ill-advised throws. He got eaten by BAL and PIT defenses. Nothing new there. Worst possible division to break in a rookie QB. Until a few games ago, he’d shown a nice developmental arc. Issues like ball protection, starting down a few receivers, adapting to NFL speed, etc were issues that he’d remedy.
Also, he has Shurmur trying to make him a short-yardage W/C QB and was murdered early in the year by drops. T-Rich could bail him out by not tap-dancing at times and hit some holes hard and get a few more first downs for him. They also don’t have a slot WR.
Last 4-5 games will be huge to see if he can continue to develop and get over this slump. Ed Reed really fucked with his head that last BAL game and he needs to get over that.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:42 PM
Agreed, but if AZ trades Fitzy for anything less, all 9 remaining fans are gone.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:43 PM
How about the number of fastballs he threw in his early to mid 20′s? How does that effect his shelf life?
November 27th, 2012 at 2:44 PM
I love the blanket statements made as if they were facts.
Not trying to be argumentative, and also don’t think McCoy is the answer.
FWIW, Advanced NFL Stats did a study and found that QB performance peaks at age 29 and begins its descent. Is Weeden a different case due to his unique career path? Perhaps yes, perhaps no.
Also, every QB with bad stats has people making excuses for him. Exhibit A is our beloved EIC who was singing the “offensive line”, “no weapons” and “offensive coordinator” tune ad nauseum the last couple of years. He’s since stopped singing.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
QB shelf life is about brutal hits taken.
rotate stock to ensure freshness
/ken whisenhunt
November 27th, 2012 at 2:50 PM
fine…howabout his football age? what, five years of not taking abuse and hits? that wont extend his career past a dude like stafford getting crushed all the time?
you should adjust for that…he doesnt fit the criteria that advanced NFL stats study since he wasnt playing like every other qb they looked at.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:52 PM
Pretty sure I mentioned that Weeden as to improve accuracy and quit forcing the ball into coverage. Felt that was pretty balanced.
I’ll stand my statement about hits taken for a QB. What forces QB’s out of a game? Injuries and for some – physical deterioration – arm injuries, elbow injuries, concussions. Usuually they are at their best with reading defenses and managing the game when their skill sets are reduced. Weeden is a pocket passer. Provided he has basic mobility I don’t see age being a hindrance over the next 1-6 years. I see his accuracy being his #1 handicap.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Oh yea spoiled rotten. In the last 30 years exactly one third of the Super Bowls have been won by an NFC East team. Guess which spoiled fan base still doesn’t have a Lombardi.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
i dont think we can say that. im not sure the WR’s are running the right routes since they’re so raw (and also, one of them is greg little) and im not sure the coaching staff knows what the fuck they’re doing.
we’re in week 12? why hasnt shurmur gotten to the 2nd chapter of bill walsh’s playbook and realized your linemen need to cut block to give open throwing lanes on short slants? THAT’S HAPPENED ALL YEAR.
jury’s still out…not saying he doesn’t need to improve his accuracy, all qb’s probably do, just saying shurimur’s a dickhead.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:54 PM
Fallow field approach to quarterbacking is taken a little to seriously in some areas:
2012 Kevin Kolb (5) / John Skelton (5) / Ryan Lindley (1)
2011 Kevin Kolb (9) / John Skelton
2010 Derek Anderson (9) / John Skelton (4) / Max Hall (3)
2012 Brandon Weeden (10)
2011 Colt McCoy (13) / Seneca Wallace (3)
2010 Colt McCoy (8) / Jake Delhomme (4) / Seneca Wallace (4)
2009 Brady Quinn (9) / Derek Anderson (7)
November 27th, 2012 at 2:55 PM
Normally I’d laugh, but look at the difference Indy made in adding a good QB to a shitty team with poor talent. A good QB/coach (and a good coach will certainly help Cam become a better QB) can cover up a lot of poor Bill “My name is Bill Polian, I drafted Peyton Manning so ignore my otherwise shitty record as a GM and kneel down before me you media cocksuckers” Polian drafts.
/fuck the Colts
November 27th, 2012 at 2:59 PM
I’ll give you the Shurmur aspect. I’d say accuracy for #1 thing solely on Weeden. What’s sad is the WR have improved a ton and are still stinky. Last week vs PIT there were many 3rd downs WR arent even going to the 1st down marker.
You just see in the rudimentary shit they run on 3rd down how bad the gameplans are. If they’ve had 1 special play installed for 3rd down, I’ve yet to see it.
That cross they ran to Gordon on the first play of the game, why havent we seen that all year.
/love Josh Gordon.

Since the owner in SD is an empty suit, once AJ & Norval are relieved of their duties, the Chargers’ job suddenly becomes primo.
Beach baby, beach baby
Give me your hand
From July to the end of September…

again…coaching. shurmur called the classic slant/out and didnt give his slot TE/WR enough room to extend the route to the first down marker.
and that’s the other thing…look at the inordinate amount of calls that required weeden to make a throw across the hashes into a tiny window on the sideline for 5-8 yard gains. WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU MAKING YOUR QB THROW THE HARDEST THROW IN FOOTBALL FOR FIVE FUCKING YARDS??!?!?!?!
shurmur’s gotta go. NOW.

Jason Babin cut…Nnamdi next?
November 27th, 2012 at 3:07 PM
wouldnt mind him here in the cleve…never understood why they took the game’s best press corner and turned him into…whatever the hell it is they’re doing with him.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
It’d be cool if they’d let Cullen Jenkins go so he could come back and try to get a second ring in GB…they need the linemen
November 27th, 2012 at 3:08 PM
Juan Castillo & Todd Bowles everybody!
November 27th, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Good riddance.
Don’t know about Nnamdi, though. Cutting Babin right now seems more like sniper fire (i.e.–he was grating on the other folks in the locker room).

Yeah, I have to always laugh at the national media thinking Eagles fans have had it good and not had much to complain about. If I told my husband he was spoiled as an Eagles fan he would punch me right in my pregnant mouth.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:12 PM
Yeah, who wouldn’t want to inherit a declining Marmalard, a patchwork O-Line and a fanbase that can’t wait to break out their vintage L.A. Raiders Bo Jackson jerseys?
November 27th, 2012 at 3:14 PM
I think Lurie took to heart what Troy Vincent said last night.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:16 PM
And he’s not even from Boston. NO ONE DENIES THIS!
November 27th, 2012 at 3:17 PM
The city of Philadelphia would have a bigger parade than the 08 Phillies parade if the Eagles ever win the Super Bowl. And that parade had 3 million people at it.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:18 PM
we named you preseason champs and you never even thanked us.
sincerely,
the national media

veteran move there. Teach a lesson and dont harm your unborn child.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:21 PM
if you told me your husband punched you in your pregnant mouth, id figure he was a steelers fan, not eagles.

Not so fast, my friend. Consider the glass half-full:
- Roster has to be remade. New coach should get major influence there. You get to “buy the groceries” and “make the meal”.
- Rivers is just about done. Go get an Alex Smith-type, play ball control/field position. Keep scores low, have a chance to win late.
- Ownership is hands-off, so you get to be voice of the organization.
- Peyton Manning will get old eventually. Chiefs & Raiders continue to struggle. SD could own this division starting in ’14.
- You get to live & work in San Diego. ‘Nuff said.
If I was qualified, you bet I’d apply for that job.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:35 PM
San Fran found out you have to do more than just play ball control/field position, which is why Alex Smith would be available to San Diego at the end of the season in the first place.

Bill Polian did also correctly choose Edgerrin James over Ricky Williams (definitely not the consensus pick), and he went out on a limb a bit for Dwight Freeney, too (considered a slight reach). He had a pretty good run, on the whole, even if he did seem to just stop preparing in 2005 or thereabouts. As for the next Eagle cut, it has to be fat Andy, doesn’t it?
November 27th, 2012 at 3:49 PM
i wouldnt say “correctly”…sticky ricky wouldve been pretty damn good in that offense with peyton and marhar too.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:52 PM
Rookie Edge as blocker/safety valve >>>>>> Ricky in those roles
November 27th, 2012 at 3:53 PM
how do we know ricky wasnt good at those things? dave wannastedt was busy running him into 9-man fronts 40 times per game.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:56 PM
dave wannastedt was busy running him into 9-man fronts 40 times per game.
Mike Ditka was his coach, don’t forget, and he didn’t really run him that much as a rookie. Ricky was a fumbler with extreme anxiety, who was never asked to block much even when he was a “fullback” as a freshman in Austin.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
lol…i just wannated to take a shot at the stache.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Lurie won’t do it until the end of the season even though he’s lost the team.
November 27th, 2012 at 3:57 PM
lol, that spelling was completely unintentional.

Some serious recency bias going on here. Bill Polian had a lot to do with the Bills reaching four Super Bowls, the Panthers being the most successful expansion team ever, and building a defense out of spare parts that, while never great, played to the team’s strengths better than any other approach would have.
Ultimately, it wasn’t Polian’s drafting that undid his Indianapolis tenure, though that his work from 2007-2011 was noticeably worse than 1999-2006, it was choosing the wrong players to lock up with big contracts. Bob Sanders was always going to have a short self life, tremendous as he was. But guys like Gary Brackett and Kelvin Hayden didn’t offer much upgrade over their replacements, and their contracts compared to their games played were cap nightmares.
Anthony Gonzalez would have been a fine pick, but injuries derailed his career. Tony Ugoh and Mike Pollak were both disastrous misfires. Donald Brown is a good player who would be great in an Alex Gibbs scheme, but miscast in Indianapolis, just as Jerry Hughes was prior to the team’s switch to a 3-4 scheme. Polian built his teams like the Miami Heat, a few stars surrounded by replacement-level talent who were made to look better than they were thanks to Tony Dungy and Howard Mudd’s schemes and coaching and Peyton Manning’s presence as the greatest blemish cream in NFL history.
Bill Polian isn’t the greatest GM in NFL history, but he also didn’t “lose it” overnight. He’s just a huge prick who hates the media, and they hated him right back and once he was fired the giddiness of the Indianapolis Star was overflowing and still filling column inches to this day.
November 27th, 2012 at 4:06 PM
Aye, but even that would be better than what SD has now, agreed?
