College Football Coach Departures: Gene Chizik, Frank Spaziani, Jon Embree, Tom O’Brien and Danny Hope
With programs putting on airs after the new television deals, a number of college football coaches saw pink slips yesterday. While Todd Graham consults his family tree, here are a few thoughts.
Gene Chizik [Auburn] The roller coaster has reached its terminus. Gene Chizik gave Auburn its best ever season and possibly its worst ever season within three years. The 2012 Tigers won just two games in regulation, against New Mexico State and Alabama A&M. With Chizik’s job on the line, the team could not manage a single point against rivals Georgia and Alabama. Auburn fans will remember him fondly, but prefer someone else coach their football team.
Frank Spaziani [Boston College] Bitchin’ mustache but the writing was on the wall. Spaz took over a team that played in consecutive ACC Championship Games. He had a worse record each of his four seasons, culminating in 2012′s 2-10 nadir. The Eagles have ranked outside the Top 100 in yards per play offense the last three years. Losing and boredom does not raise morale.
Jon Embree [Colorado] A coach deserves at least three years. That maxim, though, is the only argument for keeping Jon Embree employed. He was a risky hire, for a program already drowning after a decade of scandals and incompetence. The risk did not pay off and only exacerbated the problem. Colorado finished 1-11 with eight losses by 25 or more points. This was the worst team in school history and among the worst in FBS this year. It made Buffs fans pine for the halcyon days of Dan Hawkins. Colorado has landed zero of 15 Rivals four and five-star recruits from in state since 2010. The real question, perhaps, is why AD Mike Bohn, who hired both Hawkins and Embree, will receive a third chance.
Tom O’Brien [N.C. State] TOB critics have valid points. His teams were inconsistent. His 1-14 record in road divisional play was atrocious. He should have gotten more out of having Russell Wilson on campus for three years. That said, this is N.C. State, not some budding super power. This program has not won a conference title since 1979. It has one double-digit win season in program history when it went 11-3 under Chuck Amato. Is averaging around eight wins per season and scoring the odd upset really so terrible? Is finishing 7-5 “disappointing” or, for a team few if any had projected in the Top 25, “what was expected?”
Danny Hope [Purdue] This was coming. Purdue is not a great program, but has been a good one in recent years. Joe Tiller won seven games in a regular season nine of 12 years. Danny Hope failed to do it once. In his fourth year with what looked like a stocked team, progress was expected. The team instead imploded, starting the Big Ten season 0-5. Money isn’t everything, but when you are a Big Ten team paying roughly the same for a head football coach as East Carolina that is a problem.

With all of these interviews, Stoops is going to rack up those frequent flyer miles.

Greg Mattison to Auburn or Arkansas.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:07 PM
Gene Chizik, Frank Spaziani, Jon Embree, Tom O’Brien and Danny Hope
Sounds like the bullpen of the 1982 Atlanta Braves.

jackass can’t even get the Buckeyes to a bowl game…even in this year’s horrid Big Ten.

November 26th, 2012 at 5:16 PM
I feel like just saying they won three games and throwing ULM in there would be as effective.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:20 PM
Why isn’t Tim Beckman on this list?
November 26th, 2012 at 5:20 PM
Danny Hope [Purdue]
You might say Purdue is looking for A New Hope.
/shows self out quickly because it wasn’t that good
November 26th, 2012 at 5:22 PM
There are two undefeated 1-A schools and Purdue took both to the final play…takes a special coach to lead a team with that kind of ability to a 6-6 mark
November 26th, 2012 at 5:23 PM

That bullpen had Steve Bedrosian and the Mad Hungarian, and both took a back seat to Gene Garber, the man who ended Pete Rose’s 44-game hitting streak. 30 saves that season!

Urban has two more years there, that’s it.
Disgrace.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:28 PM
Well summarized.
Auburn fanboy/Internet favorites to be the next coach right now: Petrino, Jimbo Fisher, Jeff Fisher, and James Franklin (apparently…shoutout to HuskerDawg).
November 26th, 2012 at 5:29 PM
What do you think about that? Petrino seems possible, but I can’t see either Fisher leaving for Auburn. Franklin seems most likely to me (of those four) but then again I don’t know anything about Auburn.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:30 PM
A coach deserves at least three years
Normally, I would agree with this, but much like Turner Gill, it was obvious the dude could not figure out a game plan, adjust, or just plain coach.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:31 PM
The difference between ULM and Auburn is 3 points and the bowl game ULM will be playing in while Auburn sits at home.
/ ULM > Arkansas, Arkansas > Auburn, Auburn > ULM, the mind boggles
November 26th, 2012 at 5:31 PM
agreed he’ll go 40-0 in those three years and retire once the challenge has faded.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:31 PM
Normally, I would agree with this, but much like Turner Gill, it was obvious the dude could not figure out a game plan, adjust, or just plain coach.
How do you explain his success at Buffalo?
November 26th, 2012 at 5:31 PM
Fun Fact: Dating back to 2000, 32% of Purdue’s starters have gone down to blown ACLs.*
*may or may not be true, but seems accurate enough
November 26th, 2012 at 5:32 PM
haven’t even heard that name mentioned, among the 250 that I have, in any relation to the Arkansas job.

November 26th, 2012 at 5:33 PM
I kid you not, I read the exact same thing earlier today except replace Auburn with Tennessee.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:33 PM
Is Lowder still running the program at Auburn? If not, maybe they can get Terry Bowden back.
/ Pay no attention to that 1-11 record atAkron
November 26th, 2012 at 5:34 PM
oh shit! hire his ass!
November 26th, 2012 at 5:35 PM
I don’t think Jeff Fisher has ever coached in college. His son plays for Auburn (and I think he had another kid attend Auburn). I’d say he’s like 75:1
I think Petrino is way too polarizing. The search committee includes Bo Jackson and Pat Sullivan. Standup dudes. 45:1
James Franklin. I’ve heard very little Internet chatter regarding him. None of the psycho message boards are legitimately counting him as a candidate so maybe something happened that I missed. 50:1
Jimbo. Coached at Auburn. People claim he’s fond of the school but I’ve seen where former players question that. He was around when Terry Bowden was run off. I’d say 35:1
Gus Malzahn. Our offense was so bad this year that people think a guy like Gus can fix it. Plus he “masterminded” AU’s offense in ’10 when we beat Bama and ’09 when we should’ve beat Bama. 25:1
I’ll take the field. Somebody is going to get booed at the airport again.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:35 PM
I would like to see Kirby Smart go to Auburn just to see Satan’s reaction.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:36 PM
in that case, you forgot Jon Gruden, Gary Paterson, Chris Petersen, Bill Cowher and Pete Carroll.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:37 PM
Nope. Lowder’s influence has been marginalized and/or extinguished. The black helicopter freaks at Auburn now think that old man Pat Dye is in control of the puppet strings. Also, they’re idiots.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:38 PM
If it’s a short coaching search, the situation is in the bag and it was Petrino all along.
If it drags on a bit, the folks who support Malzahn or Kirby Smart have a shot.
If it really drags on, then Petrino might be the only guy left standing, and Auburn gets Petrino anyway.
I thought for the longest time it would be Petrino or Jimbo Fisher, but Fisher’s not moving, I don’t think. Jeff Fisher listened but it sounds like he politely declined.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:38 PM
they were in the reply list.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:38 PM
I know you are probably 1,000 miles away from Auburn, but I know you have the resources to make this happen. Ritty, the ball is in your court.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:38 PM
Gene Chizik’s record with Gus Malzahn 30-10
Chizik career without Malzahn 8-28
Yikes.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:39 PM
Gary Patterson isn’t leaving TCU, fyi. I played golf with a mega TCU booster the other day who said Patterson wants to retire early and enjoy it. He’ll coach 4-6 more years at TCU then hang it up.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:39 PM
2-10, 5-7, 7-5, 5-7. So to the extent he had “success” I’ll go with luck.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:39 PM
Lowder has friends in high places still, but no he’s no longer calling shots, as he’s no longer on the board and he doesn’t have quite the cash flow that he once did.
He didn’t call the shots last time, either, and the result was Chizik.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:40 PM
Rank ‘em:
1. Auburn
2. Arkansas
3. Cal
4. NC State
5. BC
6. Colorado
7. Purdue
November 26th, 2012 at 5:40 PM
I would love to see Petrino at Auburn (although I don’t think it will happen) just to see the message board booger eaters around here absolutely lose their shit. it would be a glorious meltdown.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:42 PM
2-10, 5-7, 7-5, 5-7. So to the extent he had “success” I’ll go with luck.
I guess I should have bothered to look up his records first. But that begs the following question even more: What the fuck was Kansas thinking?
November 26th, 2012 at 5:42 PM
Also applies to Lee Ziemba.
Not a chance. I think the B’ham News tracked that guy down after the Natty Title and interviewed him. They could probably redo that interview today. Would love to hear that audio…BOOOOOOOO!
November 26th, 2012 at 5:42 PM
shoot even Miz would put Tennessee above Purdue
November 26th, 2012 at 5:44 PM
Good point. Tennessee is #1.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:44 PM

November 26th, 2012 at 5:44 PM
N/A. Tennessee
November 26th, 2012 at 5:45 PM
I’m fine with a 1a/1b ranking. Love the SEC Internet trolls battling that out on Twitter. Great towns, great stadiums, facilities, super high salaries, hot chicks running around on motorcycles all over the place…
November 26th, 2012 at 5:45 PM
I didn’t really figure he would, he seems like a perfect fit at TCU. his name was the hot one here a couple weeks ago, I would love it, but like you said, I just don’t see it.
this coaching shit has been going on here longer than anywhere, I’m just ready for a hire, any kind of hire really. a season full of shitty football, combined with not knowing who will be coaching the following year and not feeling great about recruiting/the future is no way to enjoy football.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:46 PM
That anyone who could win even 7 games at Buffalo was doing something right?
I thought Embree was a mediocre hire to begin with, but let’s not forget that Hawkins didn’t leave the cupboard bare so much as he hacked it apart and ate the splinters, screaming.
I was fine with him getting, oh, another six or seven seasons to right that ship.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:47 PM
except for the whole sanctions (minor as they may be) and athletic department having no money, I still don’t agree.
I tend to think that the upcoming NCAA investigation on Auburn isn’t going to help their search a whole lot.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:48 PM
I still somehow had fun on Saturdays this year, but it really kills the offseason. It’s not any fun waiting months for college football to start back up, knowing 6 wins is a 2x improvement and the ceiling.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:49 PM
I don’t think it will make a difference, because it sounds like minor stuff, plus that type of stuff didn’t hurt Southern Cal, Penn State, Ohio State, etc. Okay, maybe it hurt Southern Cal, but that wound was really self inflicted.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:49 PM
If the NCAA investigation had any legs, Chizik would still be around to face that fire. I think it will be secondary all the way, the AD knows it, any interviewee would know it, etc.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:51 PM
Yes, if the situation was that toxic, I really doubt they’d be inviting additional scrutiny by having Trooper Taylor hang around through Signing Day.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:51 PM
By the way, I sat behind a girl at the Iron Bowl who had a tramp stamp consisting of two opposing swords that said “Arrrrgggh” in the middle. She turned out to be a lesbian (her wife was there too but they were apparently in an argument) who, when asked about the tat, said “Pirate lesbian. We’re a rare breed.”
November 26th, 2012 at 5:52 PM
Ziemba wasnt on last year’s team.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:52 PM
Okay, maybe it hurt Southern Cal, but that wound was really self inflicted.
They are almost past the worst of it. If Kiffin keeps hauling in recruiting classes like the one he has lined up for 2013 then they’ll have their depth rebuilt in just a couple of years.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:53 PM
Some Twitter random just said that CU needs to hire Hue Jackson. OH GOD MAKE THAT HAPPEN PLEASE
November 26th, 2012 at 5:53 PM
Yes, but those poor kids will still be coached by Lane Kiffin
November 26th, 2012 at 5:54 PM
Yes, but those poor kids will still be coached by Lane Kiffin
I think he’s the lesser of the two Kiffin problems USC has.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:55 PM
makes sense, I honestly didn’t know much about it. although I am surprised to see them keeping Trooper Taylor around, that dude is shady as they come.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:56 PM
I haven’t bought into the smoke to fire arguments about him yet, but at this point, I’m ready to hit the reset button on all of them (except Van Gorder).
November 26th, 2012 at 5:56 PM
To all the SEC experts:
Without consideration of sanctions, who is coaching your rivals, and any other circumstantial stuff, how do people rank the programs? Just the programs. So fan base, recruiting area, facilities, money, history etc?
As a Northeast/West Coast guy, my outside assumption is:
1. ‘Bama
2. Florida
3. LSU
4. Georgia
5. A&M
6. Tennessee
7. Auburn
8. Arkansas
9. Mississippi
10. South Carolina
11. Mizzou
12. Miss St.
13. Kentucky
14. Vandy
November 26th, 2012 at 5:57 PM
aw, dad shit himself again.
and what the fuck is tee martin doing coaching QB’s at USC? how could he work for kiffykins after what he did?
November 26th, 2012 at 5:57 PM
He has a special ability to straddle the line of legitimate vs illegitimate recruiting behavior. If he is not getting secondary violations it’s probably because he is on vacation that week.
November 26th, 2012 at 5:59 PM
sctrojans…lemme do the big ten for you.

2-the rest. /wanking motion
November 26th, 2012 at 5:59 PM
Jimbo Fisher on the hot seat.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:00 PM
I think it’s a little too trivial to rank them. I like to lump them.
Super Elite: Bama, LSU, Florida
Elite: Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia
Cusp of being Elite: Texas A&M, Arkansas, South Carolina
Up-and-Comers: Ole Miss, Miss State
Basketball: Vandy, KY, Mizzou
November 26th, 2012 at 6:00 PM
Wait I meant Jumbo.
Fuck it.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:02 PM
I would switch Auburn and Tennessee – Auburn has more money and a better recruiting base. I think Tennessee’s collapse this last five-six years showed how narrow their margin for success can be.
Texas A&M is funny because they’ve got Texas to recruit in, a great fanbase, and tons of money, but very little success to show for it historically. A sleeping giant. So I might actually bump Auburn and Tennessee ahead of them, with the understanding that all that can change within the next five years.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:02 PM
aTm seems a little high, but other than that no real arguments. I would move Auburn up to 5, Tennessee at 6, Arkansas at 7, then aTm.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:03 PM
Mack Brown next? I didnt hear his presser today but judging by the intarweb reaction, he seemed like he’s totally checked out now. Also UT AD has supposedly been putting out feelers to agents.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:05 PM
I don’t see how Patterson could say no.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:06 PM
I’ll take the field. Somebody is going to get booed at the airport again.
Funny.
I want nothing to do with Franklin.
I don’t care if you’re Vandy – what he did this year was expected in a down year in the SEC west. Having an above mediocre QB helped a lot.
And I just recall during two games that I watched, some boneheaded calls he made.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:06 PM
gary patterson thinks that’s bullshit.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:06 PM
No. They can have Al Borges though. Hell, if Dave Brandon was really smart, he would even offer to pay his salary too.
The WORST fucking play-calling I have ever witnessed in a half of football.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:07 PM
Not much pressure, weak conference, 7 wins and the fan base is happy. Contract extension for beating ND, Michigan, or OSU once. Plus they have that cool drum.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:08 PM

He might still be a little young for a head coaching position. But that said I’d gladly take him at SMU. As a consolation prize I wouldn’t mind Neal Brown at Texas Tech.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:12 PM
Thru the bowl season although the bowl season for me will end with the Citrus or Outback.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:13 PM
Borges has had his Auburn tour of duty. I hold his wife personally responsible for Auburn getting stuck with Under Armor, as she was doing marketing for the athletic department around that time.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:14 PM
RE: Mack Brown, someone who is close with a mega-booster, the guy who started Omni Hotels, claims said hotel magnate is willing to cut a check for Mack’s buyout, and is pressing DeLoss Dodds hard to get Mack fired.
This is all internet chatter though.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:14 PM
you mean the same Tee Martin who while a QB coach at Kentucky last year taught a wide receiver how to be a QB in one week and ended up beating Tennessee? yeah, that traitor is not welcome inside the state lines anymore.

I thought it was the shoes. Nike was pissed the players were taping over the logo and refused to attach a logo over the tape. Under Armor said “tape-away” b/c they put the logo over the outside toe area. It was also one of Plank’s first 3 sales too right? GA Tech, MD.

Hasn’t Nike started to put logos near the toe area for this exact reason? Will see if I can google up an example.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:18 PM
Tee Martin had skills. I don’t think I’d doubt his ability to teach some of that to a kid willing to listen.
November 26th, 2012 at 6:19 PM
Yes, I’d say it was Plank’s first big sale outside of Maryland, which was kind of a given for him.
I also heard that the ladies UA sent to help persuade the equipment guys to endorse UA ran circles around the gal that Nike sent.

I’m a maniac when it comes to coaching basketball. Glad my youngest stopped playing after 4th grade.
Coaching football, I actually had one assistant ask me once “Are you even paying attention?” b/c I’m so totally chilled on the sideline.
