Saturday Night Football: Can Lane Kiffin Keep Notre Dame Out of The BCS Title Game?
Tradition. Television Revenue. Notre Dame vs. USC, with a national title shot on the line.
BCS Title Implications: Lane Kiffin is the SEC’s only hope, to have the BCS Title Game be an All-SEC affair for the second-straight season. With Florida beating FSU, they should be the favorite to advance to the game at 11-1 if Notre Dame loses. Harris Poll voters could reevaluate Kansas State and Oregon instead of just slotting Florida ahead because they lost earlier, but it’s doubtful.
How Disappointing is USC’s Season? USC did not meet preseason expectations, though whose fault is that? Did Kiffin underperform? Did those rating teams miss the mark and overrate skill position talent while underrating depth concerns and line turnover?
Max Wittek: Matt Barkley is out. In comes the redshirt freshman. Wittek is confident. He has some great receivers that could finally “test Notre Dame’s thin secondary.” He also has an offensive line going up against the most physical front they have faced since Stanford.
Sports Illustrated Cover Jinx: Last week’s featured Collin Klein. Kansas State lost badly to Baylor. This week’s Notre Dame cover looks ominous, if you believe in such things.
History: The Trojans have won nine of ten against their NBC rivals, though the 10th was their last meeting at the Coliseum in Brian Kelly’s first year.
Arguments for USC? Can USC pull off the upset? We could see it. The Trojans are at home. All of the pressure is on Notre Dame. Monte Kiffin should be better equipped to stop a power running game from Notre Dame. The Irish have been pushing their luck, eeking out close wins against average teams. What happens if Notre Dame has to play from behind?

Johnny Fucking Football has a new chapter. Does he rise from what is certainly an injury that nobody can come back from.
Also, LOL Mizzou.
November 24th, 2012 at 7:56 PM
If only USC had Devin Gardner…
November 24th, 2012 at 7:59 PM
I hate Johnny Fucking Football. He either faked his injury or aTm is doing the most aTm thing ever putting him back in the game with a three td lead against a shitty team .
November 24th, 2012 at 8:04 PM
“We’re the last in…We’re the Last in…WE’RE THE LAST IN LI-I-INE!”
Love me some Ronnie James Dio.
Done all my errands. Stuffed my face with salad, leftover turkey & mashed taters. Ready to settle in and watch this matchup.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:05 PM
I guess I should start rooting for SC again since Haden announced Kiffin’s back next year. Rooted for UCLA last week but nothing came of it.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:08 PM
Johnny Football for Heisman.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:11 PM
Marqise Lee should easily win the Heisman, but he clearly won’t. They ought to change the definition to “The best quarterback on a relevant team”.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:12 PM
Actually, scratch that since Luck didn’t win. Make it “The quarterback with the best stats for people who haphazardly cover college football, on a relevant team”.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:14 PM
That photo should have been captioned “Come at me bro”
November 24th, 2012 at 8:16 PM
Caption should’ve been “How great does my wife give head bro.”

Arguments against USC? They haven’t won a difficult game all year and they aren’t good at football
November 24th, 2012 at 8:27 PM
Right. Because they’ve had a lot of success against Stanford and UCLA

Argumenst for USC: Snoop Dogg likes them and there’s likely a greater number of hot Asian chicks in Trojan gear than in Irish gear?
November 24th, 2012 at 8:30 PM
USC has 3 of the most talented offensive players in the land. Not talking about the QB’s, RB’s or 0-line. Retarded coaching.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:33 PM
I can attest that they’re perennial national champions in that competition.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:36 PM
I thought UCLA was the champ in the category?
November 24th, 2012 at 8:38 PM
They’re probably #2. SC is in a different class, but I suppose I could be biased.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:38 PM
Argument against USC: Why is Daniel Tosh on their sideline acting like a head coach?
November 24th, 2012 at 8:39 PM
Typical Lane: 4 straight rushes, 2 first downs … so let’s come out throwing! I did like the deep gamble on 2nd down, but …
eh, I’m rooting for ND
November 24th, 2012 at 8:42 PM
Because he’s just as useful as Lane Kiffin and is a dead ringer for him?
November 24th, 2012 at 8:42 PM
Wittek looked impressive on the deep ball. I imagine it is quite difficult to root for the douchey Kiffin as a neutral.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:43 PM
Am I the only one who thinks ucla is throwing this game?
November 24th, 2012 at 8:44 PM
Riddick! What a grab.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:45 PM
Am I the only one who thinks ucla is throwing this game?
You’re the only one watching that game so yes.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:45 PM
yup, that’s his MO – cannon for an arm. didn’t display much touch on that pass in the flat, but it was his first … we’ll see
November 24th, 2012 at 8:46 PM
SC secondary looking typically leaky.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:46 PM
in the event ND wins … keep in mind, the QB that gave Alabama the most trouble? Manziel, the mobile runner.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:49 PM
Please don’t compare Gholston to Manziel. I wanna see Bama go down. But Bama will shut down Gholston.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:49 PM
Wow, what a 3rd down pass to Eifert. Juggled. Another red zone trip … need TDs, Kelly, LOB TO EIFERT
November 24th, 2012 at 8:49 PM
USC is gonna need a defensive TD to win this game (or atleast keep it close).
November 24th, 2012 at 8:49 PM
Fire (Monte) Kiffin
November 24th, 2012 at 8:50 PM
I’m not sure bama beats uga right now.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:51 PM
Please don’t compare Gholston to Manziel.
Seconded. Not. Even. Close.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:52 PM
Bama will beat Georgia. Richt always chokes.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:53 PM
I third the not comparing gholston to manziel comment
November 24th, 2012 at 8:55 PM
The game is a blowout, but what’s highly entertaining in the Mizzou/A&M game is that the Referee got hurt, so the Head Linesman took over the white cap duties. He is so awkward/uncomfortable on the mike announcing timeouts/penalties.
November 24th, 2012 at 8:56 PM
Yes – TD Mizzou
/have the OVER
//don’t really care otherwise
November 24th, 2012 at 8:59 PM
I highly dislike that series of Cadillac commercials.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:00 PM
Dear God – gambler’s nightmare going on here. ULM (-4), while up 7, turned the ball over while attempting to kneel on it at midfield. Then, they give up a 58 yard TD pass to tie the game with :14 left.
/need a miracle cover in overtime

Can we get a post about Brady Hoke not shaking Urban Meyer’s hand after the game?

November 24th, 2012 at 9:06 PM
Can we get a post about Brady Hoke not shaking Urban Meyer’s hand after the game?
I imagine a lot of people wouldn’t be interested in shaking that lying hypocrite’s hand either. So maybe no post.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:06 PM

F the handshake deal. Meyer shook MAttison’s hand. HOke ran into the locker room. Beeyathch.

Betting college football has been the bane of my existence. Almost exclusively an NBA bettor now, with a little NFL mixed in.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:10 PM
USC’s weak along the front 7, which is why I was questioning their preseason ranking. They have above average talent and no depth – nothing to worry about. it’ll just get worse over the next 3 years.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:11 PM
Elaborate please.

That has been out for awhile. Before everyone knew who he was. Good to know Johnny Fucking Football is friends with racists. He is going to do something stupid in his private life and the people that built him up will take him down.
/Pageviews and whatnot.
//He is pretty good at football. That third td running around for eight seconds was impressive.
///Still, he is friends with at least one racist.

November 24th, 2012 at 9:12 PM
Leonard Williams is the only quality player. Breslin is a good rusher, Pullard and Bailey can cover, but overall you are absolutely on point.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:13 PM
Riddick having a great game early. Shifty cat
November 24th, 2012 at 9:13 PM
Wonder what happens when the media find out he has been arrested.
Regarding that jailhouse picture. If he keeps his nose clean, maybe he can be the new face of Proactive now that Jessica Simpson is shilling for Weight Watchers.

November 24th, 2012 at 9:15 PM
What is the Manziel racism story?
November 24th, 2012 at 9:16 PM
So? He got fed up with rampant SEC pay to play.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:17 PM
Under the proposed NCAA rules overhaul, the OSU shit would have been considered minor…
NCAA is a joke. I saw lots of 5 OSU jerseys (and 7 USC jerseys) on TV.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:17 PM
What is the Manziel racism story?
I didn’t say Manziel is racist. His friend that beat up the black guy was.
/Just took a whole lot of liberties with that story.

And i’m pissing on Manziel not because I give a shit. Just staying ahead of the obvious story arc with him. I accidentally used an old fake id two weeks after I turned 21 while in college to buy booze at a liquor store. I wasn’t the brightest when I was younger. I’m anticipating what will happen. For all I know, he knows how to cure old people Aids and signs lullabies to deaf midgets in his free time.

How is ND 11-0. Oh, right, they’re not*
*Stanford won in OT
**Pitt should’ve had another FG
November 24th, 2012 at 9:23 PM
You don’t think he was mad he was losing recruits to Bama, Auburn and whoever else because of cash? Urban’s no saint. He’s a typical big time coach. But he has every reason to wanna overhaul the system.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:23 PM
Been drinking since 11. Out of beer and only have moonshine left. I’m gonna hurt tomorrow…
You did that in the wrong order. Although, if you started with Shine at 11:00, you might be passed out on the sofa by now. Either way, enjoy tomorrow.

Hey MilkSteak – I live in the north atl burbs and the local shine market appears to be growing. Seriously – jugs and jars of the stuff – but I have yet to secure a supplier. All kinds of flavors.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:26 PM
Brian Kelly killed a kid and the Catholics like to stick it into little boys… I don’t think I’ll get to the point of rooting for USC, but let’s not pretend ND is at all likeable by anyone with a soul.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:29 PM
Good point. Forgot about that thanks to no media outlet ever bringing it up this year. Wouldn’t want to throw water on the ND national championship run fire.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:29 PM
In central Ohio (apparently right across the river from RKDS), lots of SW Ohio shine. APple pie, punkin’ pie is/are big. Currently drinking (sipping) straight white lightning.

Rooting for a non-all-sec title game, not necessarily rooting for ND. And fuck Kiffin.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:34 PM
Kinda rooting for Alabama-Florida. Should Florida win, proves the BS of the BCS.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:35 PM
Hey MilkSteak – I live in the north atl burbs and the local shine market appears to be growing. Seriously – jugs and jars of the stuff – but I have yet to secure a supplier. All kinds of flavors.
I read somewhere where this is becoming a thing now. I endorse it. Of course, I live in a backwards state and can’t even buy limes and tonic to go with my gin in the same place, so this won’t trickle down to Kansas until 20 years after I am dead.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:35 PM
Johnny Fucking Heisman
November 24th, 2012 at 9:35 PM
So do I go to another jar of shine? ahh, I’m an alcoholic….
November 24th, 2012 at 9:36 PM
Urban’s no saint.
Nope. He’s not. Never was. Neither were any of his players and it never seemed to matter until he was gone. Making those statements are terribly hypocritical.
He’s a typical big time coach.
Yeah – agree here.
I went though some of this with my kid at the FCS and D2 level. 90% of all coaches are lying, smug, self-important jackasses. The whole idea of your kid looking to them as on-campus parent figure – no thanks. Not the ones I met.

Drinking egg nog with Capt Morgan Black. Just glad I’m not so drunk I might see it again later.
November 24th, 2012 at 9:53 PM
So he should just recruit academic goodie two shoes? This is big time college football. If you wanna win, you recruit the best of the best. And I’ll be honest with you. Already Urban has stopped recruiting a couple low character high end talent guys. I hate it. But he’s the bad guy?
November 24th, 2012 at 9:53 PM
I learned a lesson during my food poisoning experience in Lincoln a couple weeks ago. I thought it would be smart to drink a Gatorade to help keep myself hydrated after throwing up/shitting every ounce of liquid out of me.
Turns out it is a decent plan to drink Gatorade, but apparently red flavored Gatorades are verboten for this cause. After I puked it up – I read about it online
November 24th, 2012 at 9:54 PM
gotta add something off the menu pizza/sub etc., but they’ll bring beer. But i;m past beer. Straight corn liqour. You all are keeping me at sipping. Shooting realy hurts.

Anyone here ever get a bridge/swing loan to cover down payments, etc. while moving between houses? Wife and I are bidding on a house we really want, but we may lose it if we make our bid contingent on the sale of our house (and we planned on using the equity/profit for the down payment on the new house).
November 24th, 2012 at 9:57 PM
Chugging several glasses of water right before bed usually does it for me, but I’m don’t usually mix beer and moonshine. You might be hurting tomorrow no matter what.

November 24th, 2012 at 10:02 PM
That’s essentially what this is, only it’s real short term (6 months typically), doesn’t have any points involved, etc. The interest rate would be similar to an equity loan.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:04 PM
ain’t nothing wrong with the nd qb…
November 24th, 2012 at 10:05 PM
I’m don’t usually mix beer and moonshine.
I read the results of a study re: mixing beer/wine/liquor.
The results said that mixing had no bearing on the how drunk you get or how bad you feel.
The study showed that when you change from one “flavor” to another, consumption increases because of the flavor change. So you tend to get more drunk and more hungover as a result of the change.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:05 PM
I think when I did it I had enough equity in my house that my interest was really low plus had house had apprecciated and was gonna sell really quick

I’ve found pot, time, and vomit are the only legitimate hangover remedies.
As far as college football coaches go, most are douches. That’s why I want SC to hire Chris Peterson. He seems like one of the good ones.

He does. But he’s also recruiting leftovers. As well as bad apples like Titus Young so you never know. It’s not like he has to deal with media like other coaches. I imagine he has a bunch of retards and criminals as well on his roster.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:09 PM

November 24th, 2012 at 10:11 PM
Explain. Meyer and Saban are assholes who win games and lead kids into the NFL.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:13 PM
That might well be true, but my personal experiences say otherwise.
Are these diamond commercials trying to cover every single hypothetical proposal situation known to man? Who’s going to propose on a plane?
November 24th, 2012 at 10:13 PM

November 24th, 2012 at 10:15 PM
So when does the heat start to fall on Dan Mullen? Blown out in yet another SEC game.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:16 PM
And g’night. Let you know how my egg nog/red gaptrade cure works.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:16 PM
Doubt it.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:17 PM
It’s a subjective thing, but Meyer has recruited a lot of BAD kids, which is par for the Florida course in his defense. I think his departure from Florida was actually inspired by a fear of Saban and the overall rising level of SEC competition, and that he read the Ohio State tea leaves and was operating in a much more calculated way than he let on. I don’t necessarily think he is a bad guy, but I think he is full of shit.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:17 PM
My biggest gripe with Meyer right now is that the quick, two-step motion the RB does before/at the snap should be considered a false start
November 24th, 2012 at 10:18 PM
Who’s going to propose on a plane?
Terrorists.
Ha ha! Yeah … a guy gets in the aisle and starts to kneel down. Four Marines on their way home hogtie the dude and string him up in the restroom.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:19 PM
Take a look at that schedule and find a) a quality win or b) a game against a decent opponent in which they were competitive.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:19 PM
SC is a TD away from breaking this thing open, but the last two possessions have been poor

Bama struggles against good QBs but I’m not sure this guy qualifies. I don’t put Aaron Murray in that category either.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:20 PM
His attack of the reporter at a Florida practice really rubbed me the wrong way too. He is just pretentious for my liking. Very holier than thou.

Of course. Real Americans propose during timeouts of sporting events.

I don’t really wanna get in that discussion. He did have major health concerns. If you wanna say he was terrified of Saban. Go ahead. He walked away at the right time and the best job opened up. I don’t think he was “scared” of Saban.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:23 PM
I’m sure ND will come up with something, but how the hell are they going to score against Alabama’s D when they can’t score TDs on USC’s?
ND’s defense has made some nice adjustments at half though. Was going to take Bama -9, but ND’s defense should keep that one tight.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:23 PM
Sam Adams is strictly consumed for two purposes:
1) the rare chance to watch a Patriots/Red Sox game on TV around here
2) Octoberfest 2-for-1
I won’t touch any other Sam Adams beers, though I would like to try their super-micro beers that no one has ever heard of or seen.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:24 PM
Tough to do better at Miss St than Mullen is doing. Save for Vandy, it is the worst job in the SEC. I think Mullen’s a good coach and Miss St would need to find a diamond in the rough to to better.

What father wouldn’t have cardiac issues when he read what the internet thought of his two daughters.
He probably had a stroke just looking at google’s autocomplete for them.

I’d put it at 35% chance Franklin stays one more year, and 10% he’s here after the next. That 35% is only because I’m pretending to believe what he says about loyalty and building something special etc.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:26 PM
I believe the health concerns (could’ve taken a year leave of absence, like he ended up doing), but the family stuff was a crock of shit as far as I’m concerned. I doubt he is working any less at OSU than he was at UF.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:27 PM
I’d love to lay pipe to Saban’s daughter then go home with her at thanksgiving and tower over Saban.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:27 PM
I read the results of a study re: mixing beer/wine/liquor.
The results said that mixing had no bearing on the how drunk you get or how bad you feel.
The study showed that when you change from one “flavor” to another, consumption increases because of the flavor change. So you tend to get more drunk and more hungover as a result of the change.
Liquor before beer, never quicker. Beer before sicker, never sicker.
Cute saying and for the most part was true in my younger life.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:28 PM
A&M throwing the ball up 30 in the 4th quarter with the starters in. I don’t subscribe to the don’t run it up theory for conference games, but this is a little much.

Damn it. Beer before liquor, never sicker. I should just find some moonshine.

He definitely didn’t “suck” against Florida. Also it was the first game of his college career. Definitely not the worst finalists of all time. 2000 was god awful.

Genius Kiffin just took away a TD.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:47 PM
He is good, but he sucked in both of the Aggie losses.
I attribute the florida loss to it being game #2. I would have thought their offense was in full operational mode by the LSU game, but LSU traditionally has the best DBs in conference.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:47 PM
And that folks, is the USC season in a single play.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:51 PM
5.8 yards ler pass, 220 of offense, and no second half points sucks. Don’t care if it was his first game, wr have to look at it all. Sorry he has no history to fall back on because he is a fucking FRESHMAN.

November 24th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
I agree box, manzier should win. Only because there is no one else. He is no ap, Vick, or Hershel.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:56 PM
USC getting gashed in obvious rushing situations. Get this done ND.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:59 PM
Only because there is no one else. He is no ap, Vick, or Hershel.
No – he’s no RB.
But Vick? I like where Manziel is today better than where Vick was at this point.
November 24th, 2012 at 10:59 PM
SC defense gassed. ND must have a TD here. FG won’t win the game for sure. TD makes it a 2 TD game, and the Trojans aren’t overcoming that with 6 mins left
November 24th, 2012 at 11:01 PM
Vick 12 years ago was doing things we have never seen a college qb do, on a title game team no less. Seen the manzier model before.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:03 PM
I like Manziel much better than Vick already. Better arm and better decision making and just as creative. The only Vick advantage is speed.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:03 PM

Don’t care if Bama would butt fuck them in championship, I just wanna see ND get back there.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:06 PM
Ahahahahaha the side judge looked like Brian Kelly’s secretary while granting that timeout. Kelly tells him he called timeout after the fact, so he quickly appeases him.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:08 PM
They give the Heisman to a quarterback on a championship participant whenever applicable. I’m not saying he deserves it over Manziel, but neither did Griffin over Luck.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:10 PM
I’m not saying he deserves it over Manziel, but neither did Griffin over Luck.

Murray isn’t even in the conversation and rightly so.
Plus – my guess is all of the votes will be mailed this week right?
November 24th, 2012 at 11:13 PM
The triple flag on DPI… nice.
Also… they do realize time matters, right? Time to hurry.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:13 PM
geez, settling for a FG backfiring big-time. USC TD here will cut it to two. ND will need to hold the ball the rest of the game … or score a TD.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:14 PM
I’m surprised how little buzz there is surrounding Murray. He is having an excellent season. Heisman has favored, unfairly in my opinion, stat heavy spread offense quarterbacks lately.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:14 PM
They also seem to not realize the fade is a terrible terrible terrible play call.

I’m not sure I would call that a goal line stand for the ages, Brent.

November 24th, 2012 at 11:18 PM
USC needs a safety to have any chance
November 24th, 2012 at 11:18 PM
What do you do? Kinda have to go TD, even though you just need a FG. No guarantees you’ll ever get another shot that close to end zone, or enough time to drive.
Nice job ND though. If USC has a decent off line (IF) that was a hell of a stand on a big big series.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:18 PM
Shudda thrown the fade again – at least you get back to first down if you don’t score.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:18 PM
Teo, heisman. That was a hell of a goal line stand with the title game on the line.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:18 PM
And instead they let ND gash them for 15 yds up the middle.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:19 PM
Give it up dude, you’ve beaten exactly 1 ranked team, possibly only 1 over .500 team.
Great stand by ND, fuck you Lane, hope you enjoy the New Mexico bowl Silas.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:19 PM
stepback… was pretty shitty job by SC, but ND had some real good penetration on 2nd/3rd down.

November 24th, 2012 at 11:33 PM
I’m having a difficult time finding that, given the private school factor, but he is three years in on his first contract so there can’t be much left. Money is less of a factor at SC than probably any school in the country too. I was shocked Pat Haden (who I had a ton of respect for) would hitch his future to Lane.

God it’s nice to be an alum.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:36 PM
I see that argument, but there issues haven’t been depth related. It’s been lack of offensive balance, team discipline, and game management in big spots. All coaching, rather than personnel, issues. Gut tells me his recruiting has saved him, but talent can’t iron out the aforementioned problems.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:37 PM

Bama can still lose to Georgia, at least. Sort of. It’s possible
Yeah. Bama’s DBs are the weakest part of their defense.
But Murray will likely crap his pants before kickoff like he has in all his other big games, so the weak defensive link may not get exposed.
