NFL Strategy: Did Not Think This Was Necessary Until Yesterday, Jim Schwartz, But Don’t Kick Really Long Field Goals on Third Down
Let’s do a quick strategy discussion. Don’t play for long field goals, coaches. I mean, I’ve pulled my hair out so many times while watching end game strategery, it’s a good thing I have good genetics. I wrote about Gary Kubiak playing for a long field goal late in a game a couple of years ago. It seems relevant again now after how Houston handled overtime.
Jim Schwartz, though, managed to one-up him. I mean, he threw a challenge flag on a play that was going to be automatically reviewed, and that wasn’t even the worst decision of the day. On their next chance, Detroit didn’t even go conservative and turtle up for the long field goal. Schwartz just went ahead and kicked on third down. From 47 yards away.
I mean, I’m totally for the “kick it now” thing when a team is inside gimme field goal range. There, the risk of a turnover does offset any slight increase in field goal likelihood from inching closer. This was not a gimme. Every yard increases the chances of a make. In fact, another yard would have made the difference on Hanson’s kick.
For the record, this was the longest attempt that was not on fourth down, besides end of game or half scenarios, since at least 2000.

You expect your kicker to make a sub-50 yarder. It was the right call. What if the run play on 3rd had been stuffed and made it a longer attempt? You play to win, and they would’ve won if the kick was 3 inches to the left.

So you’re telling me Jim Schwartz is a clown? I already knew that. How about the Lions being in FG range twice on third downs in the 4th quarter and hillbilly taking sacks to take them out of FG range.

So you kick a 47 yarder when you have another play? That makes sense. What if Leshoure broke a 30 yard run on 3rd and 11? What if, what if, what if.
I still can’t believe coaches kick field goals on 1st down. The Houston offense has Arian F’ing Foster and they kick a 30 yard field goal instead of trying to just get it into the end zone. Don’t get it. If you’re that worried about a botch snap and what not kick it on 3rd. If you’re worried about a botched snap you probably shouldn’t be kicking it to begin with.

Disagree. Earlier in the period, the Texans did what you suggested and proceeded to lose 6 yards. Hanson normally makes 47 yarders. This one bounced off the upright. It was something Schwartz actually did right.

That’s just wrong. It wasn’t a 35 yarder being pushed to 41. It was a 47 yarder with an extra down to get the ball closer. So Schwartz would have been correct to kick a 53 yarder on 3rd and 11 because Hanson “nomally” makes those? All NFL kickers “normally” make a majority of kicks.
