Houston Texans at Detroit Lions: Detroit Looks to End Eight Game Thanksgiving Losing Streak
Nine times? Well, if Detroit wants to avoid their ninth straight Thanksgiving Day home defeat, they will have to do it by pulling the upset of the nine win Houston Texans, who make their first ever Turkey Day appearance.
It’s really hard to lose eight home games in a row at any point, and the fact that Detroit has done it on Thanksgiving is remarkable. I know they weren’t the ideal franchise during much of that stretch, but most teams luck into a win somewhere. Instead, they have been dominated, with the average score being 36-14 over that span.
If Detroit hopes to win today, it will be dependent on the defense slowing down the Texans. Houston has one of the best ground games in the league with Arian Foster, and last week, they showcased a passing game with Andre Johnson coming to life to rally to beat Jacksonville.
Ndamukong Suh is now a year removed from the infamous stomp incident. Last week, first round pick Nick Fairley stepped up with a huge game where he was a constant disruption. Those two and the rest of the defensive line will need a similar result this week.
The other key will be keeping Matt Stafford upright, and then him delivering passes on target. Calvin Johnson will have opportunities to make plays if Stafford has time, but against Houston, that’s always a concern. That is made doubly difficult with long time left tackle Jeff Backus potentially missing the game with a hamstring injury.
Titus Young (Sr.) is out today for his less than mature play. Detroit needs someone else to emerge, perhaps Ryan Broyles, to provide another option to Johnson. Pettigrew may also be a key, as last week the Jaguars were able to utilize Marcedes Lewis down the middle in the red zone.

Reiff will be eaten up by Watt. The key is Stafford not being a pussy and making accurate reads and throws.

Shocked how easily the Lions have moved down the field to open the game.

Wade Phillips needs to step his shit up. Where were Reed and Barwin on that drive?

While there’s no denying the Lions futility on Thanksgiving. I think a lot of it has to do with quality opponents – since it’s a national game they usually get paired with a legitimate team for this game. Just sayin…

I want the Texans to lose, but that’s the single worst call in nfl history.
November 22nd, 2012 at 2:51 PM
These refs blow. Oh well, just another opportunity for Stafford to pick up more yards.
November 22nd, 2012 at 2:51 PM
How come they didn’t review that play?
November 22nd, 2012 at 2:51 PM
So is the rule if you throw challenge flag on a call that is ordinarily automatically reviewed upstairs (scoring plays, turnovers) then the refs won’t review it and the call stands plus a penalty?
November 22nd, 2012 at 2:52 PM
What the fuck just happened???
November 22nd, 2012 at 2:53 PM
Ok, they just said that’s the rule. That’s a stupid rule.
November 22nd, 2012 at 2:56 PM
What a complete asinine rule. Flag em but to not be able to review it is horrendous.
November 22nd, 2012 at 2:57 PM
What was the nfl thinking writing that rule? Makes no sense.
November 22nd, 2012 at 2:57 PM
Please dont implode Lions

I was going to do it but since you’re nagging me to do it I won’t do it.

If the Texans bring the same defense to the playoffs that they have had the last few weeks itll be an early exit.
