Jon Gruden to Tennessee? What Are the Vols Message Boards Saying?
Those in the college football business who have dealt with Jon Gruden over the last few years – when he’s been linked* to college football job openings at UCLA, Michigan, Miami, Florida and Notre Dame, to name a few – say his MO is always the same: Initially shows interest, listens intently to a school’s spiel, and then, when the talk turns to money, asks to be one of the three highest-paid coaches in college football. At that point, schools realize they can’t afford him.
Which school will finally acquiesce to Gruden and meet his demands? It might just be desperate Tennessee.
According to an email from a reader, here’s what one of the Tennessee message boards was saying over the weekend about Gruden and the Vols. College football message boards are often full of lunacy, sometimes a mixed bag, but occasionally (as with the Penn State/Sandusky mess) they are ahead of the curve. This was sent to us before Tennessee made Tuesday’s $18 million announcement:
- Big money boosters have been working hard to make Gruden to Tennessee a possibility
- Gruden has talked with and met with several current and former college coaches to ask them about things like the 20-hour rule, recruiting, etc.
- Two of the coaches he met with have previously coached at Tennessee, so he was able to ask them specific questions about UT and Knoxville – not just the college game in general. We were asked not to mention the names, but they have been cropping up other places recently.
- If Gruden were to come to Tennessee he would demand a lot of $ and a lot of control over the program. In terms of “control” it means things like reporting to one person only – anybody else is simply there to facilitate the needs of the coach. They aren’t there to tell him “no.” They’re there to get it done and to make the football program as successful as it can be. If the staff needs new video equipment, it’s ordered – there is no “permission” that needs to be given, etc.
- Gruden is rumored to be asking for $4 to $5 million for staff salaries. What does that mean, exactly? It means he spends that money how he pleases. It means he hires as many strength coaches as he wants. He can hire as many GA’s, operations people, recruiting assistants, video assistants, academic advisors, trainers, class monitors, etc. as he wants. He doesn’t want to be told, “we’ve never done that here before.”
Coaching situations are fluid and what might seem like a lock one week falls apart in a matter of hours (see Michigan and Jim Harbaugh in Jan. 2011). Three weeks ago, when the Gruden chatter started to gain steam as Derek Dooley’s players quit on him, I thought leaving MNF for Rocky Top would never happen. Right now? I’d say it’s close to 50-50 that he takes the job (maybe 40/60).
* Linked is always used very loosely in the college football coaching search game. In college football, any connection to a college at all – no matter how minimal – usually warrants a mainstream media reference, unfortunately. To the best of my knowledge, Gruden has never gotten very close to taking any of the jobs listed above.

Yeah, so how long until Tennessee has multiple violations?
November 21st, 2012 at 2:46 PM
What was the announcement? The twitter is blocked at work. Also, this was the exact same thing that happened with Miami.
November 21st, 2012 at 2:48 PM
Still with this?

I’m 100% certain Gruden will absolutely kill it on the recruiting trail and have blue-chippers lined up to play for him.
However, isn’t this the same guy who could only work with veteran qb’s who knew his offense? And now he’s going to recruit, develop, and be patient with 18 and 19 year old qb’s?

Are we still doing “Stoops to [Coaching Vacancy]“?

Based on what? Message board chatter?

Jesus, just tell Chuckie to look at NCAA rulebook article 11. Spells all that shit out. All your “extra” help is going to be undergraduates and the second one of them acts as a coach, ruh roh.

please no. please no. please no.
this guy with basically no college coaching experience (but he was a GA at Tennessee years and years ago!!!).
this guy that hasn’t head coached a down (charity highschool coaching doesn’t count) in, what, 5 years?
this guy that loves to stockpile and rotate qb’s with a 53-man roster…what’s he gonna do with an 85-man roster with potentially 25 new players each year?
this guy that “wants full control” in a situation that is setup to prevent full control.
yep, I’m convinced he’s a perfect fit too.
/makes wanking motion
//I do believe this is the 3rd time now in the last 4 years that Sources has told us Tennessee has hired Gruden…this Sources dude sucks at being right

Every good journalist learns to go with his gut feeling.
What’s that? It’s the opposite? Well then.

Chuckie might do well getting all the guys that Saban and Urban dont want. I don’t see him going toe-to-toe with those and beating them. What’s he going to do, take 3 years to install a pro-style offense? Not sure that’s optimial.

Tennessee recruits well no matter who the coach is.
November 21st, 2012 at 2:59 PM
Who cares? I’d be corrupt as fuck paying the parents of players. You really only get fired for not winning.

I’d like to see Chucky take over for Lane Kiffin. That’d be interesting. Then Kiffin could finish what he started at TENN.

Meanwhile….

Ya, I am not in a gated community…but my kids get to use the schools funded by their tax dollars…so I love these rich people.
November 21st, 2012 at 3:01 PM
If they whacked Kiffin, who gets that job?
November 21st, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Ron Prince has unfinished bizness.
November 21st, 2012 at 3:03 PM
You have kids? Here, take some money.
November 21st, 2012 at 3:03 PM
Nope, NCAA says only 5 strength coaches can be used for football.
He’ll make Lane Kiffin look like a choir boy.
Not exactly the same but allegedly he made similar demands.

Are we still doing “Stoops to [Coaching Vacancy]“?
Technically, it could still happen.
November 21st, 2012 at 3:07 PM
Hopefully they bring back the Spurrier offense of switching the QB out every snap…that was good old fashioned fun

I like how the $18 million thing is being treated as a game changer. They knew they were going to do that before this season even started.

Since talking about SNES games this morning I’ve been listening to the Secret of Mana soundtrack, which sounds absolutely amazing considering this game from a 16-bit home console

Know where they’re getting most of that $18 million?
Good to see they have academic priorities straight in Knoxville.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:55 PM
Man, Tennessee is going to get the NCAA to change the rule on how many GA’s a program is allowed? That’s some serious clout.
