2013 NFL Mock Draft: Thanksgiving Break Edition
We had a 2013 NFL mock draft back in May. Then we had one in late August. Around the middle of the college football season, in October, we did another mock. Here’s our end of the season mock. We’ll re-adjust after the NFL regular season is complete.
1. Jacksonville – Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah. Been in our top five all year, and with no QB distinguishing himself, Jags push for a trade or shore up the league’s 4th worst run D with 6-foot-4, 325-pound monster.
2. Kansas City – Matt Barkley, QB, USC. Won’t be popular, but the Chiefs are in dire need of a QB. USC QBs have largely flopped in the pros, and Barkley didn’t have a great senior year. Trade down to take him? I think Barkley will shine at the combine and impress in interviews and go in the Top 10.
3. Cleveland – Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M. Browns will have a new coach, so this pick could go to anything. The defense is solid, but the offense can’t move the ball.
4. Oakland – Barkevious Mingo, DE, LSU. Like him more in the 3-4, but too much of a physical monster to pass up for Oakland, which refuses to play defense.
5. Carolina – Jarvis Jones, LB, Georgia. Panthers going LB two years in a row? Thing is, I’m not sure Jones falls this far. He has some Von Miller in him and could go first. Kiper/McShay are salivating.
6. St. Louis – Chance Warmack, OL, Alabama. One of the worst offensive lines in football gets help. But Jeff Fisher loved drafting offensive skill players or DL stars in his time at Tennessee, so take that into consideration.
7. Arizona - Taylor Lewan, OL, Michigan. With the 3-4 defense, the Cardinals need to get into the top 5 and grab Jones. Also, they need a QB in the worst way, but if they wanna ride Kolb, at least protect him.
8. Philadelphia - Barrett Jones, OL, Alabama. No shot Vick is back, so give Foles a chance by helping that putrid line. Can’t wait to watch the new coach clean house.
9. St. Louis (from Washington) – Keenan Allen, WR, California. Gotta be a receiver for Bradford, right? Amendola and Givens are nice, but I wouldn’t consider either a No. 1. Can Allen (6-foot-3, 205) be that guy?
10. Tennessee – Manti Te’o, LB, Notre Dame. Instant elixir for the 28th-ranked rush D in the NFL.
11. New York Jets – Jonathan Cooper, OL, UNC. With so many holes on the Jets, I hope they trade down and acquire picks. Not drafting a QB here, and there’s no skill player I love, either. Please, Mr. New GM, trade down! Cooper has emerged as a 1st rounder opening up holes for Giovani Bernard (see below).
12. San Diego – Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU. Took a pass rusher (Melvin Ingram) last year, but the Chargers are still struggling to get pressure on the QB (tied for 28th in sacks).
13. Cincinnati – Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State. Slight lean to value here over need (WR, LB).
14. Buffalo – Robert Woods, WR, USC. Draft full of good receivers, but not great ones. Bills desperately need a receiver.
15. Minnesota - Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee. JUCO flier made everyone forget about Da’Rick Rogers very quickly.
16. Miami – Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama. Good run defense could use help in the secondary. Right now, Milliner looks like the best corner in the draft.
17. Detroit – CJ Mosley, LB, Alabama. Having an outstanding junior year for the Tide: 55 tackles, six tackles for loss, four sacks, two interceptions. Or do the Lions go OL?
18. Seattle – Anthony Barr, LB, UCLA. We talked about him earlier this week. Carroll knows him from his USC days. Barr, a tremendous athlete, figures to be a combine beast. Suddenly, this is a strong draft for linebackers.
19. New Orleans – Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State. Worst secondary in the NFL has to go corner or safety here.
20. Tampa Bay – Tavon Austin, WR/KR, West Virginia. He’s a smurf (5-9, 175), but a playmaker. He’s nearly the same size as Randall Cobb, the budding star in Green Bay.
21. Indianapolis – Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M. His debut in our mock drafts. What a season the junior has had (20 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks). Manziel is hoping he stays.
22. Atlanta – Alec Ogletree, LB, Georgia. Falcons are 9-1 despite having the 26th-rated run defense in the NFL.
23. Dallas – Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame. Feels like I’m just gonna ride this one until the draft.
24. Baltimore – Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas. Aging defense has plenty of needs, but I think they’ll bolster a really poor pass defense and with Ed Reed probably retiring after this year.
25. Pittsburgh – Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia. Quite a fall, from first in our last mock to 25. Have teams figured him out? Just a slump? Oft-injured Roethlisberger turns 31 in March, and I think Smith is a franchise QB.
26. New York Giants – Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas State. Wrote last time I thought the Giants LBs were weak. Many disagreed. I still feel that way.
27. Denver – Giovani Bernard, RB, North Carolina. Another player debuting in the mock. Very strong season, but the injury to McGahee and lack of depth I think leads the Broncos to go RB in the draft.
28. Chicago – D.J. Fluker, OL, Alabama. Life Eifert, I may stick with this until the draft.
29. San Francisco – Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri. Had to get him in here, otherwise, the Missouri fans would come after me again. At 6-4, 300, he’ll eat space nicely for Harbaugh.
30. New England – Matt Elam, S, Florida. Hard-hitter and talks trasher should fit in well here.
31. Houston – Terrence Williams, WR, Baylor. Andre Johnson ain’t getting any younger.
32. Green Bay – Dion Jordan, DE/LB, Oregon. Whatever they do, it’ll be defense. Some view Jordan (6-7, 240) as a sleeper who is so talented he could sneak into the Top 10 come draft time.

Unless this is the best player available, the Giants aren’t taking a linebacker unless he is an absolute stud.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:20 PM
Well this is outdated, they have more young defenders than the know what to do with right now…depth on the line perhaps but if you’re talking strictly areas of need the offensive line needs new parts assuming Derrek Sherrod’s injury prevents him from playing football again
November 21st, 2012 at 4:21 PM
need secondary.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:21 PM
Dude that scored 138 points last nite, a complete sham.

He has missed 4 games to injuries in the last 7 seasons before this weird rib dislocation.
At this point I think the go with a NT or OLB.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Eagles are going to be in the top 5. There is no way they are winning more than one game the rest of the way (CAR, TB, WSH, NO, DAL, NYG). They’ve quit on Reid and have no depth.
And the Browns already have a monster line…they more than likely will trade down to another team who wants to move up for Joeckel, Jarvis Jones or Bingo.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:23 PM
They do need O-line help, but I do think that whoever the Eagles pick is going to depend on the type of coach that’s in place.
If the Eagles pick a defensive-oriented coach, I could easily see them going in that direction as well. They have invested in the defensive lines, but they are still notoriously thin at LB.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Get off this bandwagon. When you ranked him number one is was PURE lunacy. The guy is an average QB in a pass happy system. He’ll never be a good pro. Shit he’s barely a good college QB.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:23 PM
November 21st, 2012 at 4:23 PM
quite honestly, i never know what Jerry Reese is gonna do, but usually it’s a great pick.
/In Reese We Trust
November 21st, 2012 at 4:24 PM
Pittsbugh taking a QB in the 1st round? Not likely. A FA and then maybe a 4-7 rounder. Still need OL, defense is getting old. Too much need to draft a QB.
Talyor Lewan, I could see. He hasn’t had the season you’d have thought he would.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:25 PM
I hope more people spend the weekend writing about how they hate the Grinnell kid, seems like a fun way to talk about D-III basketball for the first time ever
November 21st, 2012 at 4:25 PM
why would Dallas draft a TE with their first pick with that offensive line?
November 21st, 2012 at 4:25 PM
Good FO don’t reach for need and especially when they are picking later in the draft, take players that represent good value who may have fallen. Unfortunately, the writer does not understand this.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:25 PM
2. Kansas City – Matt Barkley, QB, USC
Please don’t! Trade down or take a cant miss with the top 5 pick. Wait til the second round and take someone like Wilson or Bray.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:26 PM
Assuming this guy is a Sidney Rice type? That’d be nice
RE: all the trade talk. In a draft with a lot of good-not-great prospects, what incentive is there for ANYone to trade up? Unless everyone’s as dumb as Cleveland was last year
November 21st, 2012 at 4:26 PM
Because Jerrah, that’s why
November 21st, 2012 at 4:27 PM
He’s from Wisconsin too so thats funny. After reading the article it was a complete sham, with the intention of getting records. Apparently thats what the coach on this team likes to do. They dont play defense, cherry pick like crazy, and sub more than a hockey team.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:27 PM
A guy in Simmons’ mailbag pointed out that the Chiefs haven’t won a game started by a QB they drafted since 1987…that has to be the most ridiculous NFL thing ever aside from Rich Kotite getting hired twice
November 21st, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Browns need a pass rusher immediately.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:28 PM
A guy in Simmons’ mailbag pointed out that the Chiefs haven’t won a game started by a QB they drafted since 1987
Oh, Brodie Croyle.
Weeps
November 21st, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Seriously? They got 2 2nd round pick OTs, a 1st C and OG. Why use another high pick on a OG? Hopefully they can get a dynamic defender (LB/S) or a Casey Hampton clone.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:32 PM
This seems appropriate here.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:33 PM
Keep fuckin’ that chicken.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:33 PM
They’re 3-0, good for them
November 21st, 2012 at 4:34 PM
Nearly impossible to justify drafting an interior lineman first overall. Flies in the face of the direction the league is going.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:35 PM
I guess we can all agree that this years draft is poop outside of Defensive line and Offensive line? Reminds me of the 2005 Draft.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:35 PM
More defensible now than a couple years ago thanks to the rookie salary cap
November 21st, 2012 at 4:36 PM
How does this team (and coach) not get its (and his) ass kicked everygame? It’s clear what they’re doing, throw a hard elbow to the designated scorer’s head, undercut when he’s taking a 3. Unless Grinnell’s got a Oakley on the bench, there’s no way this should be happening.
There are also some NCAA rules related to sportmanship that they seem to be wilfully violating.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:37 PM
If Eifert is there when the Falcons pick they’re taking him. Dimitroff loves him some skill position players despite a mediocre offensive line and defensive front seven.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:38 PM
Speaking of league trends…Joe Fauria could sneak into the back end of the first round. Where is TJ McDonald?
November 21st, 2012 at 4:38 PM
The only thing that bothers me about that kid getting the NCAA scoring record is that:
A) the team they played isn’t even in the NCAA
B) that same team was playing that game as an exhibition
November 21st, 2012 at 4:39 PM
November 21st, 2012 at 4:39 PM
What stands out to me is that every player listed is from a BCS school. I went and looked, and each of the last 10 drafts has at least one player in the first round from a non BCS conference.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:42 PM
Good point. Curious why Ty Duffy doesn’t do these mocks, as you know, he covers college football.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:45 PM
but that means you have to watch more than just NBC and ABC
November 21st, 2012 at 4:51 PM
TBL already bailing on your boy Tyler Bray?
November 21st, 2012 at 4:56 PM
3. Cleveland – Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
CLE has cornerstone offensive tackles in Joe Thomas (5 straight all Pros) and RT Mitchell Schwartz. I’d be aghast if it was not a DE or CB. If they drop down with some wins maybe an impact FS or WR.
November 21st, 2012 at 4:59 PM
I don’t see why the Browns would fire their coach, aside from new owner bringing in “his guy”. They’ve been competitive in almost every game, with a staggeringly young offense.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:01 PM
Nearly impossible to justify drafting an interior lineman first overall. Flies in the face of the direction the league is going.
Present blitz schemes have identified the fastest way to the QB in a short-drop system is going directly over/around the guards. It’s making versatile and elite guards more valuable and franchise tackles less valuable (although still very valuable).
November 21st, 2012 at 5:02 PM
I don’t see why the Browns would fire their coach, aside from new owner bringing in “his guy”. They’ve been competitive in almost every game, with a staggeringly young offense.
Pat Schurmur is running an offense from the 1980′s, installs crappy plays, has few prepared plays for short-yardage plays in crunch time, and is retarded game manager. Other than that, great coach.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:11 PM
Browns pick is horrific as stated by scripty. No way they go OT. They need defense bad and specifically CB, LB and DE. Even a ballhawk safety as Ward only looks to hit people.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:11 PM
Not a great coach by any means, but he is competent enough that continuity is reason to keep him. The team plays with consistent energy and togetherness despite having a terrible record. Every criticism aside from game management can be remedied by an offensive coordinator that isn’t Brad Childress. When I’ve seen them play I’ve been more disturbed by indecision from Weeden and inconsistent wide receiver play, but they’re young at both positions. If you are saying the west coast offense is outdated, blame Holmgren.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:11 PM
I’d be fine with a DE or secondary. Wait till the 2nd or 3rd for a LB.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:13 PM
I wouldn’t be shocked if Giants drafted along the line again. Osi isn’t getting any younger and the O line is starting to show some were.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:17 PM
seems like a fun way to talk about D-III basketball for the first time ever
I think the University of Redlands is a D3 school and they got a little press a few years ago for their crazy offense. I should know this since I went there for a year but I don’t. I was even supposed to do the game tape for the basketball team but didn’t feel like staying an extra day over Christmas break.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:18 PM
I look forward to the commenter outrage when Geno Smith ends up going top 10 in spite of it all. It will be great and as predictable as the rising sun.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:31 PM
Yup. He needs a TON of time to even be marginally effective. Reminds me a lot of Gabbert. I hated Gabbert coming out of college because at the sign of any hint of pressure he would backpedal and try to throw his way out of it. Never stepped up.
The kid at Syracuse is more NFL ready than Smith.
Taking Barkley at 2 would be one of the biggest disasters in NFL draft history. A lot of my USC friends, who’ve seen every game Barkley has played in, think he’s a mediocre QB propped up by amazing WR’s and mostly above average O-Line (until the C got hurt this year)
November 21st, 2012 at 5:31 PM
November 21st, 2012 at 5:35 PM
2 is too high, but the backlash has been a little heavy. Kiffin has been a large part of the problem, with his refusal to run the ball with enough regularity and a consistent desire to force the ball downfield, rather than varying the pass game to attack all areas of the field.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:36 PM
Guarantee TBL has never heard of Eric Fisher, who’s pretty much a first round lock if he doesn’t fall on his face in the combine.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:41 PM
Sad that a team may have to settle for a mediocre first round TE knowing that an all-timer is going to be there next year.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:49 PM
I mostly agree with with you, sctrojan, but I think Barkley is also a bit Flacco-esque in his starey nature. He’s got a great arm, good mobility but… he does have seem to have an ungodly amount of talent around him to just be pumping out turnover after turnover like he does.
November 21st, 2012 at 5:50 PM
Wasnt it not too long ago that Barkley and Landry Jones were future NFL studs?
November 21st, 2012 at 5:56 PM
Wasnt it not too long ago that Barkley and Landry Jones were future NFL studs?
Yep. That’s why you declare early if you have the chance
November 21st, 2012 at 6:10 PM
Jevan Snead as a potential top 5 pick was a hoot.
November 21st, 2012 at 6:19 PM
Zac Dysert > Landry Jones
November 21st, 2012 at 6:21 PM
Dead on! He shouldn’t go in the first 3 rounds.
November 21st, 2012 at 6:24 PM
Like the solider?
November 21st, 2012 at 6:26 PM
ESPN bought the bcs playoffs for about 500 million a year

Like the solider?
More like Mark Bruener
November 21st, 2012 at 7:05 PM
No way a guy with stupid of a name and from LSU is not going to be a bust.
November 21st, 2012 at 7:43 PM
Day before Thanksgiving, my birthday, and I am stuck here at work for 3 more hours. Shitttttttttttttty.
November 21st, 2012 at 7:50 PM
Huh?
November 21st, 2012 at 7:53 PM
Of course the Chiefs would have a top two draft pick in an overall talent-poor draft with no top 10 worthy QB available.
I say trade down and even out of the 2013 draft completely and try to stockpile draft picks for the next couple of years.
November 21st, 2012 at 8:27 PM
Dang, rondoman, happy birthday.
I was so encouraged when the draft pick was made. Fast forward, the guy hadn’t gotten it done yet. Maybe next game…
November 21st, 2012 at 8:34 PM
Dallas picking 23???
That’s about 12 spots later than they’ll actually pick.
November 21st, 2012 at 8:36 PM
Thanks SROD! Getting old sucks!
November 21st, 2012 at 8:37 PM
This mock is a steaming pile upon further review.
November 21st, 2012 at 8:37 PM
But I guess you need pre-turkey page filler
November 21st, 2012 at 8:38 PM
There was a guy on a 49ers site that showed all the comments on there the day Aldon Smith was drafted.
Consensus was WTF are they doing? Who is this guy? And then they named a bunch of players that they should have taken.
Looking back on it, there are a lot of guys that surprise and no one sees as an impact player in college. There are also a lot of guys who are supposed to be impact players and never hit their stride in the NFL.
Drafting is kind of a science, with some luck and circumstance thrown in.
November 21st, 2012 at 8:43 PM
So Jmacs playoff teams are:
AFC
Texans
Patriots
Broncos
Steelers
Ravens
Colts
NFC
Packers
49ers
Bears
Giants
Cowboys
Falcons
I dont know about the Cowboys in there.
November 21st, 2012 at 8:44 PM
I dont see the NFC East getting a WC team. If the Cowboys make the playoffs, it will probably have to be winning the division.
November 21st, 2012 at 8:53 PM
Knicks looking like geniuses by not signing Lin.
Shooting 34% on the season with 6.5 APG.
November 21st, 2012 at 8:54 PM
Lin is shooting 22% on jump shots.
November 21st, 2012 at 8:59 PM
Happy Birthday. My oldest had his today.
November 21st, 2012 at 9:05 PM
Thanks WFS.
34 years old today. Ah.
November 21st, 2012 at 9:08 PM
And you don’t really know until you’re committed to a draft pick until you get ‘im on field. Wish I could predict the future better.
November 21st, 2012 at 9:09 PM
9 ahead of you. Ugggh.
November 21st, 2012 at 9:15 PM
Bucks up by 2 in Miami after 3.
They were down 18 in the first half.
FT Attempts: Miami 22, Milwaukee 5.
November 21st, 2012 at 9:16 PM
Pick any draft in the history of the NFL and google the results. Every GM in the league can say the same thing.
November 21st, 2012 at 9:46 PM
browns are quite solid at OT, as others prolly said. maybe trade down and hope to get montgomery?
November 21st, 2012 at 9:51 PM
Bucks miss a shot with 5 seconds left, going to overtime in Miami.
November 21st, 2012 at 10:21 PM
Probably staying in school. I’m almost positive he wasn’t on the field for Senior Day this last weekend. I was a bit late getting to my seats, but I checked and didn’t see 77 on the field. There were several other red-shirt juniors on the field though.
He hasn’t been able to show off his run blocking as much this year because most of Denard’s runs go to the middle. It doesn’t help that the guards aren’t great at pulling, so not much ends up going his way. From interviews and other things I’ve read, he puts a lot of stock into living up to the precedent that Jake Long set, and he knows he isn’t there yet.
With more of a conventional QB next year, he could easily improve his draft position. So again, don’t be surprised if he stays in school one more year.
November 21st, 2012 at 10:28 PM
have a take and don’t suck
/too late
November 21st, 2012 at 10:31 PM
i might catch shit, but Weeden looks legit to me, trade down, smart picks at need positions and they are borderline playoffs next year
November 21st, 2012 at 10:56 PM
No shit here bro. I think you are on it.
Browns need a pass rushing DE and another CB to bookend Haden. They need another LB, but I think that can be gotten via FA.
Browns do need a guard (or 2), but that can be had in later rounds or again through FA.
November 21st, 2012 at 10:57 PM
Bills need a receiver? Thats maybe near the bottom of team needs right now.
November 21st, 2012 at 10:57 PM
He wasn’t, but the redshirt juniors out there were backups and walk-ons that are graduating and done with their college careers. Personally, I’d be shocked (but thrilled) if he stays.
Where do you sit? I’m in sec. 36 row 36.
November 22nd, 2012 at 8:55 PM
Section 12
Row 59 on the aisle.
November 23rd, 2012 at 10:10 AM
Love those talks trashers
November 23rd, 2012 at 10:18 AM
How did multiple people who are supposedly in the know about football make a pick this horrifically off?
Cleveland has an all-pro LT (Joe Thomas) and their RT (Mitchell Schwartz) has been the best rookie tackle in football this year. Tackle is literally the single position the Browns are least likely to address.
On other topics: Jarvis Jones has all the talent in the world, and Spinal Stenosis. I think his talent keeps him in the first, his medical concerns drop him to the twenties. Barkevious Mingo is probably the 4th best DE right now, maybe 5th. I could definitely see Werner, Dion Jordan, Moore, and Montgomery all going ahead of him. Warmack is a Guard, you don’t take guards top 10. Everyone said DeCastro was the best in a decade and he went in the 20s. If Damontre Moore comes out he’s a top 5 pick. He has excelled in both a 3-4 and 4-3 in college and this year he’s done it vs. the SEC. Geno Smith will be a top 10 pick because he’s the #2 QB, not because he deserves it.
