i remember chilling at 18 at akron and seeing probably 10-12 guys hit it inside where i would from 160-200 yards as i would with a 30 yard pitch. and if that wasnt bad enough, i remember watching phil take full swings for a 10 foot flop shot and not missing a single one.

also, the tour greens would fry my nerves after a few weeks. These guys are conditioned mentally to handle hard greens all the time.

Well, yeah. It’s not a vacuum. If you are gonna be bad putter, but you’re still on tour–it stands to reason you’re a great ballstriker. I love convo’s like this. People start putting what makes them shitty into a tour player perspective. On tour, it’s CLEARLY not putting that separates the men from the boys. But on your local muni, or at your club, it’s putting that keeps an 8 hdcp shitty, and makes your local scratch seem so good. Driver, and 180-220 separate the men from the boys. You can get occasionally hot with the putter and win, but you aren’t occasionally a good long iron player/driver. On the PGA Tour here’s the breakdown…from 5 feet, the odds are 75% of a one putt. The 50/50 break is at 8 feet. From 11 feet, the odds drop to 33%, and down to 25% at 14 feet. One out of five at just 16 feet. Once you get to about 20 feet, statistically you might as well be at 35 feet as the numbers aren’t very far apart. So, hit greens from 180-220, and be able to reach the par 5′s. THAT is how you become a great tour player. Your standard shitty 10 hdcp will 3 putt from 30 feet almost 15% of the time. Yes, putting will help him. But it doesn’t really help someone who can actually play the game.

This couldn’t be more true. I’ve been on the practice green with Vijay several times. He’s bad by tour standards, but still very impressive.

i think it needs to be said that, even the worst putters on tour are probably the best putters any of us have ever seen.

A few others, Bubba (157, G-Mac 160, vijay 170, kj choi 172, westy 175, Garrigus gutted his way up to 146th). All these guys listed cost themselves 2 strokes a tourney by not being average.
