Here is an interesting goal from today’s Champions League match between Shakhtar and Nordsjælland. Shakhtar kicked the ball back after a play stoppage due to injury. Their Brazilian striker Luiz Adriano jumped on it, ran around the Danish club’s goalkeeper and scored. A complete miscommunication…or the ultimate dick move?

Danish TV reports that Shakhtar’s manager told his players to let Nordsjælland to score their second goal, making it 2-2 at halftime. Now 4-2 Shakhtar.

Nordsjælland had a guy go down, they blew play dead. Gentlemanly rules state that Shakthar give it back because Nordsjælland had it when the guy went down, that’s what the player is doing with the drop kick, just kicking it back to the goalie. It’s a live ball but it’s the biggest unwritten rule of the game.
The ref was 100% right to let the goal stand though.

Always a great day when Chelsea and Man U lose.
United loss is meaningless as they’re already through as winners, but man Chelsea, woof. If Shakhtar and Juve draw Chelsea are out regardless of what they do against Nordsajaelland. One of the most expensive teams ever assembled, whomp whomp.

The soccer governing bodies are hell bent against any kind of in game review, just now getting goalline technology and even that is still facing a lot of argument. Standard argument of slowing down the game and taking out the human element.
After the fact bans for diving are allowed, although very rare.

Actually, it would be great if, while dude is rolling around, the booth reviews it and notifies the field it’s bogus by blowing a huge ship’s horn. This would alert Sally that she can quit rolling around and can now meekly walk off the field for a penalty.

If it’s questionable that the ball crossed the goal line it should be reviewable. That’s it, though.

Shaktar didn’t let them score in return… this goal tied it up at 1-1, then the Danish team took a 2-1 lead on a great shot 4 minutes later (soon to be surrendered).
Would a little bit of explanation/research have been that difficult, Duffo?

Soccer has enough rules that keep you from scoring goals. Unwritten ones are entirely unnecessary and should be wilfully ignored.
