I think having a new RG and RT is about 90% of it. The zone scheme is dependent on the whole unit working together and you just can’t make up for the fact that these guys are first time starters learning to play together. I think Caldwell is a bust at this point and they need to just stick with Jones. Newton is pretty inconsistent, but shows flashes of being competent. My hope is that as the season goes along, and they rack up more experience, it will get better.

I still think this team needs to open it up a little more too and get Aryan more involved in the passing game. He’s one of the best pass catching RBs in the league, yet has only 20 catches through 9 games.

Rodney, what’s your take on Foster’s 3.8 ypc this year? Worrisome? Completely a function of the O-line or do you see some change in his running this year?

I worry about the amount of touches he is getting. The need Tate back, quickly.

Texans let him walk because he injured his ankle twice last year I think. Why keep him when you have young guys like Jones and Caldwell to build off of.

I just noticed that Terrell Davis had an astounding 481 carries including the postseason in 1997. He had another amazing year in ’98 before it all came to an end.

Htown, it could be the case, but this line is quite different from the one Foster ran behind last year. Ben Jones is still pretty young at guard but I like him long term. Our biggest problem seems to be Derek Newton at RT. The guy is not getting it done. I’m also still puzzled by the drafting of Brandon Brooks. He does not have the prototypical zone blocking frame and right now is buried on the third team offense. Regardless of how this year goes I’d like to see the Texans address receiver and O-line again in the draft next year.

Brisiel hasn’t exactly been a revelation for the Raider…you can have him back for a bag balls.

That might be part of the answer Ben Tate isn’t even listed on the depth chart right now (still injured? can’t recall right now). Tate got most of the goal line snaps last year. Foster was getting more of them and Sunday was actually his first game of the season where he didn’t score a TD.

I won’t speak for Rodney, but I personally find it a little worrisome. But I think it has less to do with Foster’s head (i.e. I don’t think he’s turning into Shaun Alexander 2.0) and more with the new line this year. They are fine at pass protection but don’t seem to be as good run blocking this year.
